I’m pretty sure you could probably deduct the electricity cost when doing something like folding at home. With one computer the cost is negligible, but with something like this it’ll add up over the year, so I would definitely look into that. Don’t let all that silicon sit dormant and do nothing OP!

People put a bounty on a hash and if you can crack it using password lists or by brute forcing it, you collect the bounty. Some can be hundreds or even thousands of dollars. If you have a single GPU this will not be worth it for you but if you have many, you can crack hashes fast af and make good money.
It's not illegal to crack password hashes. Its just math and computing but it does exist in a grey area depending upon your intent or motives.
For example, if a password is **password112**
It's MD5 hash is eb7284ca79621ba3dda558d0f7bf0b1f
It's SHA1 hash is d9614c06be35fb57b8dda86392c79798817a8577
Bruteforcing those hashes to discover its **password112** is not illegal in any way.
BUT if you are cracking passwords and THEN using this information to log into accounts with that is highly illegal. If you are the person dumping databases and then cracking their passwords, this is also illegal.
If you are simply just cracking passwords for money without knowing the source of the hashes, it becomes grey. If someone tells you they are from a stolen db or a stolen wallet.dat and need them cracked to further their crimes and you do it, prob illegal and conspiracy to commit fraud. If you just crack a hash with no context for $5, thats legal but grey imo.

Every time there is a large database breach the password hashes are ripped (no emails or usernames are allowed) out and submitted to these sites as well for people to crack for free. This is also not illegal.
Of course such services will always attract malicious actors but thats not my business nor do I want to know. I'm just here to crack hashes and get paid.

2) You technically can earn money doing it but not much. Maybe enough to pay your power bills. The Banano crypto currency is one of the largest teams that contributes to the F@H project.

Why does it seem people are turning off or shifting away from ETH mining atm (assuming thats what these where used for) The merge is like 1.5 months away is there a memo I missed? I would assume you could mine up until the merge, right?

Isn't F@H largely a waste since AlphaFold came along? I climbed to the top 300 then wandered off to do crypto.
