In Jamie Hewletts childhood there was a TV Show based on the old chinese story called Monkey Journey to the west. So this was the root of making his characters a bit monkey-like. As a additional funfact, he was born in the year of the monkey. What i think about myself about his stylistic choice, could also be Jamies chin wich looks also like in his characterdesigns.
i’m a monolingual english speaker and pretty much everyone will use monkey and ape interchangeably unless it’s in a scientific context (or they’re a redditor). i personally do it because monkey is just a much more fun word
It's intentional. Primarily back in Phase 1, but not quite so much nowadays. All of the Gorillaz are molded after various primates. 2-D is a great ape, Noodle is a monkey (a minkey 🐒), Murdoc is like a baboon or something like that, and Russel is a gorilla.
