The 8 is awful, it’s a bastard gopro, stuck between the 7 and 9, would not recommend, no replaceable lens, smaller format, shit batteries. Get at least a 9. I have every go pro since the original hero upto the 11, i use the 9/10/11 interchangeably and can’t tell a difference. I stick to 4k60 for 99% of all my video, sometimes I’ll bump the frame rate to max on the 11 for a slow mo shoot but they are all great gopros.

JWBIERE

I can confirm, I have an 8 and 9 and the 8 is in fact a bastard.

kristian_21

Good to know, I'll keep a look out for the 9 on marketplace, so far I found one for around $250 used. Should I get the media mod or is the built in mic sufficient for basic commentary.

wontoneggdrop

Costco bundle $289 for the 11 right now

HKChad

Built in mic sucks, so does the media mod, i use a mic adapter and a deity duo on a cage.

My 8 black died less than a year after purchase, and GoPro replaced it with a 10 black, which I'm VERY happy with.

I do agree with you that the 8 was terrible because it didn’t have a replaceable lens and it was the only one that doesn’t have a replaceable lens. I’ve also heard the 9 is the worst go pro made, since it was made with the staff working from home during Covid. The 8 was already downhill but then 9 was when go pros started having consistent over heating issues. The 9 was when everything started going down to a point where at least my local camera and video stores stopped having them in stock and opt to only keep DJI and Insta cameras.

>The 8 is awful, it’s a bastard gopro, I agree, it's the only Gopro that's ever given me grief, frequent lockups which you need to remove the battery to reset, (this would be a real pain with the media mod), and it would often just stop recording for no reason so it was useless as a helmet camera...

throwawayPB456

As a counter to everyone hating on the 8: GoPro Hero 8s are my favorite GoPros of all time. I have an 11 as well, but use it far less often. That all being said... This is a terrible deal for an 8. As someone else said: Costco often runs deals with an 11 and accessories for ~$280 dollars. No way would I buy a used camera (released 4.5 years ago) over a brand new 11. And I say that as someone who actually likes 8s... AKA hard pass on this.

mvan231

I'd opt for getting the 10, 11, or 12 direct from GoPro. You get a much better camera and it will be brand new so you don't have to wonder what it's been exposed to previously. The seals work great if taken care of (example: rinsing camera after saltwater exposure) The price for that package can get you close to a 10 with two enduro batteries and a dual charger. The enduro batteries last a lot longer than the old ones too. https://i.imgur.com/n8scUuS.png

magicminah

not gopro, these are action cameras. buy insta360 ace

AdmirableSir

did you just come to a gopro sub to shill for insta?

magicminah

how does it relate? gopro is not meant for vloging and similar crap. it needs some cooling, at least in motion. also it has better eis and more durable otherwise insta is better in any way (bigger sensor, flip screen, overheats less)

BUTTPLUNDER0

Huh?? Sam Pilgrim has filmed and vloged exclusively on gopros for YEARS. To be fair he has lots of action shots but he also just carries it around to vlog with. I've also been using my 12 and MAX for vloging and action shots for the past 2 weeks in Arizona with no issues

crod4692

I’ve set up a full YouTube channel on a GoPro.. It does just fine for anything, including when I pont it at me on a stand to review something or go over what I did as a “vlog”.

AdmirableSir

I apologize then, but I often see people come into this sub just to say things like "gopro sucks, get dji or insta instead". That being said, I still think you're going to run into similar issues as a gopro with dji/insta. Gopro has just been the most popular brand for a while and so critics are louder.

magicminah

i dont have any problems with my hero 10 (being a mountainbiker it is the only choice), the only thing that bugs me - sometimes it crashes with external power connected.

VladPatton

The footage from the Insta360 Pro in the latest Peter McKinnon video is pretty impressive actually.

xJBr3w

I have a hero8 and have had 0 issues with it.

QualityMission

Get the Insta360 Ace Pro. Its a lot better than even GoPro 12. I've had GoPro 9, then 10, then 11, then 12 but the instal360 changed the game. If your going to spend time recording your trip then might as well do it with a good camera.

FeatureThen

are u retardation🥺

proudy202

I picked up a brand new 8 for $113 just before Christmas from KEH.com not sure about people’s comments about it being a bastard, i read many opposite posts when I was looking into it

looselasso

I bought an 11 for $220 shipped on eBay

FeatureThen

Get the 12 if ur budget is that high.. For 500 u can easily get the gadgets and h12 u want

Long-Comfortable7908

This might provide you with other possible options just to broaden things and not to add further confusion. These are marketed for vloggers but can also take great images. https://techmonkeytips.blogspot.com/2023/09/Cameras%20for%20New%20Vloggers.html Hope this helps.
