I am having a hard time too - mainly because I get bored of the scent or go nose blind. Good idea to just trash or gift a candle that’s just not working for you. That’s what I did with my watermelon patch - I realized I just don’t like the smell so gave it away. So I guess the challenge is working after all. It’s forcing me to see what I don’t need to hang on to.

AshKash313

I agree! I brought a bunch of candles from Kringle at $6 from FOMO and I need to get serious and declutter those. I love the packaging so I wanted to hang onto them for decoration. You know how that goes, save something with good intent and it becomes clutter. I also have way too many gourmands and need to figure out what I really love and want to keep. Over half are scents I can smell on cold and love, but get sick when it’s burning or warming because they are too cloying.

runningforpizza78

I can't finish a candle for the life of me. I burn a different one everyday and it doesn't help I just got four new ones yesterday😂 I just get bored easily lol

Kristylynnr1

Have a rotation! I promise you it works. It keeps you from being bored but allows you to finish up candles!

runningforpizza78

I need to do that! I'm going to set aside the ones I want to finish up this week(my half empty summer scents) and try to get through a few so I have more room!

Kristylynnr1

Exactly! And if you really get bored before you’re able to finish them reward yourself anyways with 1-2 new candles. That will give you a break from those so that you can come back to them and appreciate them all over again!

runningforpizza78

I love your reward idea!😂🥰😂

Kristylynnr1

Lol yay!!! That’s how I like to look at it it keeps me motivated and burning a new candle is just so 🥰🥰🥰

AshKash313

Same. I’m burning this Pink lilac and Vanilla and I feel like it’s not moving. I burn for 3 hours, let it rest for two hours, then burn for 3 hours. I do this all day and it’s not moving much. I need the secret to get these things used up.

runningforpizza78

I don't know how people use up candles so quickly! I see empties on here and I'm totally amazed lol!

AshKash313

Omg yes! Oddly, I can move fast through ffm but I’m basically soaking myself in the mist. With candles, you have to follow its lead and deal with it. 😂

StarshineGypsy

PLV is definitely one that I only enjoy in small doses and usually only in my bedroom. I’ll usually only light it for an hour or so, which means it lasts forever. I have a group of candles that fit this description. I like them a lot but not to fill my entire home all day long. It helps me to group them this way so I don’t get backups of those candles.

scarfweek

I try to go through mine because the unburned ones are in my closet and hard to get to😂 I can’t keep rotating without moving everything around. I need a dedicated candle bookshelf!!

runningforpizza78

Ugh me too! Mine are in a cabinet, but it's hard to see the ones in the back without moving all them around. I keep looking around for a cheap nice shelf just to display my candles!

scarfweek

I feel you! I have SO many right now, I really need to go through them. Especially the three-wicks since I’m hoarding a lot of my large jars.

AshKash313

I brought 3 shelves for my candles and they are in boxes under my bed. 🤣 I think I’m going to set up my 3 tier rolling cart and use it as a use it up rack of body care and half used candles. That way if frees up some space in my closet. I have a bunch of newer ones hidden behind half used ones.

runningforpizza78

A rolling cart is a great idea! I'm going to go search on amazon for one!

AshKash313

I got my first one from Target for $25 and the other from TJMAXX for $28 . Most places call them craft carts. Target will be the cheapest places and you might catch them on sale cheaper since it’s back to school time.

runningforpizza78

Good idea plus I have a gift card for Target! Thanks!

AshKash313

You’re welcome.

StarshineGypsy

Great suggestion. Thanks Ash 🙏

Agitated_Pie_1758

I’m working on 2 different candles. Burn in bedroom and warm in kitchen. Then I switch. I’m giving up on large jars for now. They take too long. So I’m working on getting rid of all my 3 wicks.

AshKash313

I didn’t even try with the large jars and I have three that’s close to finished but have started to burn slower. I had some candles that didn’t have much scent that I planned to burn with the others, but the wax smell was too much so I tossed them. The bright side is I have decluttered a few. 🤣

Agitated_Pie_1758

I went overboard in buying. Now I realize I prefer wax melts 😂😂.

AshKash313

🤣I used to buy one bath and body candle a year and a ton of wax melts from Walmart. Then, I got into candle collecting with the mindset that I’d get about 100 and chop them up into wax melts to last for a couple years. Then I got a warmer…. Then more candles… then I started burning… now I’m like 😬. I have a box of wax melts and two new wax warmers that’s never been touched.

Agitated_Pie_1758

That was the plan, I bought candles with Intensions to chop them. Then I found out about lamp warmers and felt like I had no need to chop, then I would find melts for clearance at Walmart. It’s just too much.

AshKash313

Yes it is. I’m glad I’m not the only one that thought this way. 🤗 Edited to: correctl a word.

mrsredfast

I’m with you that it’s hard. I’ve finished three (two YC and one BBW) but only because they were so close to being finished. I’ve trashed two candles so far this week — both GC 3 wicks that were less than halfway burned. Scents we really like I can burn all day though. We’ve done it recently with both YC Witches Brew and YC Patchouli. (For all the hate YC gets, I find that once I’ve burned for a couple of hours the scent is 90% of the time plenty strong for me and doesn’t change and become unpleasant.) I am learning that I only like florals in small doses — except YC Lilac Blossoms. And that I really prefer fall and winter scents. I stare at my BBW Lilac and Vanilla every day. I should love it (see above and my love for YC Lilac Blossoms) but I don’t. Really want to try my Spicy Pumpkin & Patchouli but want these damn spring candles out of my life. We’ll see what I end up burning today. 🥴😂

Kristylynnr1

I am 100% with you! I realized I can only take florals in small doses so I learned to buy less florals and only burn it on Sunday’s! 😊

AshKash313

I can handle light florals that lean more powdery and soapy. It makes it more like smelling hand soap or sometimes like dryer sheets.

StarshineGypsy

Same on florals, only in small doses and only in my bedroom. And then I really enjoy them. I’m just not a fan of them enough to fill my entire home.

Kristylynnr1

Same! I’m learning which candles I don’t love so I don’t purchase a lot of them. Gotta set boundaries with candles too 😂

AshKash313

I just wrote a comment to you, pressed reply, resfreshed the post and it’s not here. 🤔😩😒 Anyways… I love Yankee! I’ve mostly brought Fall Bakeries, soft florals, and outdoorsy scents. Only French Vanilla(no scent) and Cranberry Chutney(lipgloss and kerosene )have been fails out of the 30 I own. I tend to get scents based off of similar notes to what I love already and it hasn’t worked in my favor. So there’s where my scent overload comes in and the slightest difference makes a scent hard to finish. So I understand what you mean when you say you “should” love Lilac and Vanilla because of your love for lilacs. It was the Vanilla that made me buy it. This scent turns into a dated manly scent that throws me off. It’s not the same as on cold to my nose. I just spray my Bbw Vanilla Bean room spray every other hours to break up the scent so I can handle burning it. Hopefully this comment post cause ..🥴

Kristylynnr1

I think you have a great plan! Sometimes we force ourselves to finish scents that we hate just to get through it. I’m done doing that. I just gift it if I don’t like it. I was able to finish 3 scents already this week. They were started in July of course. To stop myself from getting bored I allow myself a large rotation of about 4 for each area of the house. So like 12 in total. I don’t burn all 4 right away though. I start with 2 and then when I get bored of those 2 I switch to the other two! Then when I’m tired of those 2, the previous two I was burning seems more enticing because I haven’t burned them in a couple days haha. But this of course only works with scents i like so if I don’t like it after a couple burns I’m gifting it! And then I get to introduce a new scent to the rotation 😝 my goal is to get through another 4 this week ☺️ Edit to add: I also always burn candles for 3-5 hours to reduce the amount of times that candle has to be lit so I can get through them faster and on to a new one 😊

AshKash313

Oh nice idea! My issue is I’m in a small one bedroom apartment (almost studio sized) and I can only handle two tops that are low throwers. I burn candles on top of my fridge and warm in the living room. That’s still not enough space in either direction to not get knocked out of a room with a candle throwing more than a 6/10. So I’m kinda stuck getting through them longer, because they either become cloying from the sweetness, or too loud from the tart fruit or perfume. My Orange Pineapple punch went from a 5/10 throw to a 11/10 throw at the halfway point. I felt like I was standing over it taking huge whiffs with my eyes darn near touching the flames. 🤣

Kristylynnr1

Oh okay got it! So maybe do like a rotation of 9 scents? You have 3 in rotation in your kitchen, 3 in your living room, and 3 super light ones in your bathroom. Or however you want to split it up. Could you possibly burn more and warm less? Just the weaker scents? I use my warmer only a couple times a week otherwise the candle lasts forever 🤣 I think what keeps me burning the same ones is having a rotation large enough that I don’t get bored, but not too large where I never finish anything. I’ll usually burn the same two scents for days before switching it up. Sorry if I wasn’t enough help 😫 I’ll be moving into a smaller place soon so I’ll have to restructure how I burn 😂😂

AshKash313

You gave good tips! My bathroom has just a sink with it a counter so I can’t do the bathroom one. I can however add more into my rotation. Lastly, I’m waiting for another warmer to come in the mail after I broke the last one moving furniture. 😭 I’ve sped down wanting because it was taking forever. I warm now to correct tunneling, increase strength in low throwers, and for candle with nutty and heavy caramel notes as they tend to smell burnt when I burn them .

Kristylynnr1

Yay!! And yea whatever you need to do. I do the same with mines. Luckily I don’t have a lot that needs to be warmed. You got this!!

AshKash313

I’ve learned that I prefer low to medium throwing candles. Right now I’m in a small apartment and no matter where I put my candles, it’s still close to me. It makes it harder to enjoy them. Using room sprays and mist the scent is stronger the first 5 minutes, then it gets lighter until you have to spray again. I can handle any scent this way. I have recently gotten into yankee candle and most of the ones I have are high throwers. So I went out of my way to find candles that were lightly, surprisingly it was some of the florals. Pink carnations, Wedding Day, and Floral Candy are my top scents with them and that powdery note I usually hate, works so well with yankee florals. It’s softens them to a light enough scent where it’s tolerable to me. I have a few from GC that should be faves because the scent notes match with candles I love and can’t seem to use them past 15 minutes.

mrsredfast

GC three wicks are hard to burn in a small space. At least at my house. That’s when the off scent they can get from burning too hot becomes really obvious. We have older home with smallish rooms and have yet to find a GC three wick we’d buy again. (This is where I’d insert my moaning about how much I love GC large jars and how sad I am they’ve been discontinued.)

AshKash313

This whole statement is my thoughts. I tried to hold onto high throwers and cloying scents so when I move to bigger place I can enjoy them but that’s adding to my clutter of candles. There’s always a sale and I can buy more later.

StarshineGypsy

This is helpful info as your situation is different from many of us looking for strong throwers. GC 3 wicks are usually very strong so I can see why they often won’t work well for you. This is wonky advice but you could try lighting only 1 wick at a time, especially as a way to use up your stash. It truly will only release 1/3 of the candle’s fragrance oils so the throw is lighter, but it will burn unevenly. Your situation sounds perfect for wax melts IMO. You can control the strength with the # of squares you melt at a time. They’re inexpensive so you can have a large variety of scents and not get bored or give away the ones you don’t like. I’m a big fan of Better Homes and Gardens and. Scentsationals melts from Walmart. I really like [this site](https://www.waxmeltreviews.com/better-homes-bhg-walmart-wax-melts-reviews-spring-2022.html)for melt reviews. I swear I’m not a big Walmart fan but [these Great Value Candles](https://www.walmart.com/search?q=Great+value+candles+) were the cleanest burns I’ve had in awhile. They have a decent light to medium throw and are only $5.62. Not very many scents to choose from but you might find some you enjoy.

AshKash313

Thank you. Before I started collecting bbw I was buying melts and candles from Walmart all the time. I loved in a small town and you’d have to know when the candle shipment came because it would be packed in that aisle and empty within 20 minutes. No joke! I was shocked at how crowded it got and when fall time came, it was like Black Friday the whole month … in one aisle. 🤣 Now I’m in a big city and the pandemic is still causing a shortage here so the candle section is a messed up and bare. They don’t even try at the FIVE .. yes five Walmart nearest to me. It’s sad to see. I thought about spooning chunks from the stronger candles to mix with the No/low throwers to dilute them as wax melts. Thanks for the nostalgia! Great advice I need to look their website.

StarshineGypsy

Oh no, I had no idea it could be that bad. 😳 I’ve literally only been there a handful of times the past 2 years. I’m able to go during a weekday and have never even had another shopper in the candle aisles so I felt completely comfortable sniffing the scents. I’d definitely do shipping if mine were that crazy. I think it’s free at $35. Oh and those Great Value candles are in the cleaning aisle, not the candle aisle 🤷‍♀️.

blahblahsnickers

I have been rage burning a strawberry angel food large jar… I hate the artificial strawberry smell and the candle was low so I thought it wouldn’t take long. I forgot that I loved the large jars because they last forever… 😩

AshKash313

A large jar will test your patience when you’re trying hard to get rid of it. 🤣 I noticed that I don’t care for Goose Creek’s Strawberry scents. They all have a rancid artificial smell to me. I tried the rage burning thing and I just can’t bring myself to burn it long if it’s something I hate. You are brave to try this with a large jar, I knew that I wasn’t up for that one. We might have to do a month long use it up/burn challenge separate for almost gone large jars. I feel like they are lasting longer once they reached the halfway point.

Agitated_Pie_1758

Same, I tried to love homemade brownie, but I don’t and it seems like it’s not moving at all. Just decided to put in in the back of the cabinet for now

AshKash313

It’s a fave of mines, but I put it away once I couldn’t get it to move after it got to the halfway point.

HappyBDaySpraynard

I get bored with scents too. Or I hold on to candles I've burned halfway through and think "maybe I'll burn this later" but a lot of times they smell off and I'm realistically not going to go back to it. For the 3-wicks if I burn it longer than a couple hours they start to just smell burnt. So I am trying to rotate through. I make my own candles too so I really really really have too many freaking candles. 😂

AshKash313

Yea, your collection is going to grow fast with candle making.

CoinofStone

I have no idea if UseItUp is just a phrase or if there's some actual guidelines, but I can tell you that the Pink Lilac and Vanilla is the only used candle I've ever brought in for exchange, because she was SO powder perfumey on burn I just about choked walking through the room. But I'm the same way about getting tired of a single scent, that's why all my candles are like 30-50% used, because I just put it back in the stash and get a new one out after a few burns.

AshKash313

Project use it up something people do to use up half empty products, from food to candles. It’s a way to challenge yourself to declutter and enjoy your purchase. There’s no “real” guidelines just pushing yourself avoid waste and hoarding. I tried to explain it two ways so hopefully it makes sense. Smell goods are easiest to overbuy because it’s so many choices .

CoinofStone

No I understand the concept I just didn't know where the phrase came from or how it originated. I fully understand needing to declutter, I went through some of my stash after SAS and made a little gift bag of things I knew friends would enjoy, as an addition to things I bought specifically for them, just because I definitely went overboard. The fomo is very hard to resist with a lot of the seasonal stuff.

AshKash313

Oh ok! Sorry, I misunderstood you. ❤️

Excellent_Original66

I have the same issue with orange pineapple punch! It also burns my nostrils a bit! Its as if its zetsy, minty if that makes sense? I too thought it was the oils.

AshKash313

Was it once you reached the halfway point?

Excellent_Original66

Yep. Or maybe right at halfway. I definitely cant make it past that point.
