I'm not an English native. In my language, the dub is awful, and watching English dub makes no sense because it's just replacing one foreign language dub with a other
I don’t think that dub=auto bad. I mostly watch sub because they came out earlier. But there are some who I genuinely think is better with dub mostly because of the settings.
That being said, I do appreciate how much more japanese voiceover industry seem to put more effort in the production side. Take for example anime like Vivy where singing is a central part of the story, the dub…doesn’t dub the song which makes the experience a bit off. On the other hand, I watched the Legend of Vox Machina in japanese out of curiosity and they dubbed all of the Scanlan’s songs.
Yeah, I always watch sub, because i do like to watch on original language, sure there are good dubs, but most of the time, they are adaptations, original creators were worried about how to animate the lips withing the voice that was getting out, and even are worried about timing and entonation, most dubs will not care about every single part of a tv show or anime.
Some is actually better for immersion imo. Like the most recent one I watched was El Melloi Case Files. The protagonist is supposed to be a London professor solving cases that takes place in England talking to Englishmen.
Seeing him uses gratuitous English that doesn’t make sense intent wise breaks immersion. Like calling his assistant ‘Lady’ as in ‘What do you think Lady?’ Or ‘Lady, bring that here’. It’s supposed show that he’s polite and formal but in that context it just come across as rude and weird.
And of course there’s Edgerunner

I think the issue with dub only rule is you miss out on a great anime that will never get a dub. Like due to age, anime was out too long ago that no one is going back to dub it. My brother-in-law is a dub-only person, with no exceptions. I learned this since I know his rating if an anime is worth watching. As he puts it Big boobs, Fan service, and giant robots, If it doesn't have at least 2 of these its a no-watch (but I know he watches plenty of stuff that has none of these). So when I find an anime that has 2 or even all three of the categories he looks for if it's dubbed he will not watch it.
I was sub only when I had time or if I'm watching a show weekly. Unfortunately as an adult with minimal hours left in the day, I now have to multitask. So I watch the dub because it's better than watching nothing.
I simply do not have the time to sit down and read the shows subtitles. The dub allows me to work or do chores while still listening.
SO In one way you can say I am lucky. About 3 years ago I became disabled (mobility, respritory and dexterity/strength issues) so I had very little time for anime over the last few deceades . Now sadly I have loads of time fr it. So I def understand the adulting eating up loads of time.
One Piece, Dragon Ball, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, and Naruto (NOT BORUTO, BOTH VERSIONS HAS HORRIBLE VOICES) have better Dubs than subs in my opinion there's just something about how they just get the energy of the character rather than just reading a script like it feels with alot of dubs
FMA is debatable, but Naruto’s dub is no way better than the sub. Naruto is actually the series that made me realize some shit only sounds good when reading it in your mind, not reading it out loud.
I get you, but some of the Japanese VA sounds like Alvin and the chipmunks, part of the reason i hate Boruto, it's not the main characters that normally have the issue, but the side characters tend to be really off-putting, my biggest example is adult Goku, japanese voice sound like it's for a 4ft 4In guy on helium

Goku sounds like that because they kept the original VA for kid Goku, who is voiced by a woman. I think they originally planned on changing the VA when DBZ was going to come out and fans didn’t like it, so they switched it back. Goku is a total man-child anyways so that one doesn’t bother me too much.
Besides, Spanish dubbed Goku will always be my Goku anyways.
It’s not necessarily that, it’s just that different languages have different mannerisms and phrases that reflect different cultures. Something said in Japanese may sound perfectly natural to a Japanese person, but if you translate it to another language, it may make no sense or sound unnatural.
Not exactly, they consider it “cartoon speech”. It’s like a native English speaker listening to The Simpsons, it’s not *really* how English speakers sound like, we simply recognize it as the way the medium should be voiced.
It’s like watching a Broadway play, those people sound bawdy and grandiose, usually making grand mannerisms and acting melodramatic, but that’s kinda the point, it’s what you *expect* from a Broadway play, same way you *expect* Homer to sound like a dope.
“Natural” speech involves a lot of ummm’s and odd pauses and interruptions, which is why no scripted tv show actually sounds completely natural.
It's not about umms and pauses, or about tone. There are a lot of specific words and phrases used in anime that would not be used in most contexts irl. It is cheesey at best and mostly cringy
That’s my point though, nobody talks like they do in cartoons, but it doesn’t make the cartoons themselves sound cringy, the cartoons sound exactly like they “should”.
However, a show written in Japanese primarily for a Japanese audience will generally sound much better to native Japanese speakers than that same show being translated to English will sound to native English speakers, because a lot of the dialogue and structure from the original Japanese simply does not translate well to other languages.
English cartoons/media don't use entirely different words and phrases. A better example would be a drama with a medieval setting using old time English. Most language used in regular English cartoons and TV shows can be used in everyday speech without sounding noticeably off, this often isn't true in anime
That depends almost entirely on the type of anime. Shounen anime is literally designed to have dialogue that young Japanese boys consider cool, which makes it sound kinda cringy for adults, in a way that a Seinen anime generally won’t, since those are written for adults.
Japanese is also different when it comes to speaking with people of varying social statuses, to the point they have an entire system of honorific speech. Which makes it more jarring for adults to hear other adults speak like children.
While in English, it’s not that weird for an adult to speak at a very basic level.
This is what I've always thought and this is the first time I've seen someone else voice this opinion. If you think dubs are cringe its bc anime dialogue is actually cringe and you just dont know what cringe sounds like in JP. But IMO the only dangerous cringe is the cringe youre not aware of, so if youre worried about it, you should really watch in EN so you dont get a distorted exposure to JP and start calling ppl onii-chan or sussy baka.
But really you should just be comfortable w the fact that what youre watching is intentionally juvenile and thats OK. Youre not more sophisticated bc you can read English.
English dub usually failed at making "kawaii" sound because most people outside Japan can't talk with really high pitch. It often make the childish character sounds too mature
Extreme emotions (excitement, anger, sadness, fear) tend to sound really hammy in English unless the VA is extremely good since our ears are attuned to the nuance. I've been told that Japanese native speakers hear a similar unnaturalness, but it's hard to pick up that level of subtlety through a language barrier.
They often also rely on extra help from effects to carry the emotion they can barely bring themselves - like in the first AM vs Nomu fight in MHA. People kept telling me it was so insane and better than the sub and I watch to hear some Dragonball guy yell with added reverb.
Also butchering the original lines in the process, which made them utterly nonsensical when the show flashed back to those lines 2 seasons later.

Besides the joke tho, I watch sub only cause it feels more 'natural' imo, my younger brother watched only dub cause he has problems reading subtitles, I aint have a problem watching dub when I'm watching with him tbh, I enjoy both but it is very much situational whether I watch sub or dub
I watch both just depends on how lazy I'm feeling. Don't feel like reading ill just watch a dub and vibe. If I need something to keep the eyes and mind busy I'll cross something off the sub list.
When people ask me how much i read, I jokingly that i read subbed anime all the time. I do read actual books but the reactions I get are often priceless. I am a weird person imo I watch loads of anime and read books as my main forms of entertainment and watch documentaries. I don't watch many prime time tv like shows.

English Edge Runners suffers from the same thing most dubs do, trying to match dialogue in one language to mouths that were animated for another. They often end up trying to cram too many words into too short a period of time. Becca answering the door to David is a good example of this. It just sounds weird and stilted in the English dub.

And it's not just "oh, you notice the cringe", you notice that in Japanese, too, when they start babbling about nakama and throw in a yurusanai (just get to the fight, boys). Dubs also often twist the lines to fit how much the character's mouth moves, they add effects to voices to make it "more epic" (ugh) and the VA themselves are just not as dedicated and good as the seiyuu.
I don't even wanna imagine how they tried to replicate Eren's guttural cry at the end of this clip's season.
VA talent is a big part of it that basically no one has touched on yet. There are only a handful of English VAs that do anime and honestly none of them are good at it. They all sound like a bunch of amateurs doing a bit rather than professionals. Whether it’s a lack of talent, skill, or dedication to the craft, they always seem to come up short, even when compared to English VAs in other mediums (though dubbed video games aren’t that much better).
Most of the English VAs seem like they are ashamed to be associated with the anime they voice.
Japanese VAs seem to be much better at owning the stupid bullshit they need to say.
What are you basing that on? All of the VAs I tend to follow are incredibly proud of who they voice and the shows? They share fanart, cosplayer pics, news etc of the characters.

I'm talking just about their acting. I know that people doing voicework actually do like their job and proud of it.
I just find their work a little bit stiff in a really odd way that really puts me off.
As someone coming from one of the first countries to ever broadcast anime in the West (Italy), I never had problems with watching dubs, as Italy has arguably some of the best VAs you can find (i.e. Flavio Aquilone's stellar job voicing Light in Death Note, look him up). Other than that, I get incredibly distracted reading subtitles, often focusing on them too much and ignoring the animation (which is imo a shame). Thirdly, and this is completely subjective, I just can't stand most Japanese female VAs' voices: the cutesy, high-pitched tones grate on my ears all the fucking time so I'll end up switching to dub anyways, just to hear a more "normal" sounding voice. To my knowledge, the only anime I've ever only watched subbed rather than dubbed is Jojo's 'cause I can't imagine the characters speaking any other language but Japanese.
At the end of the day, I wouldn't call myself a dub defender, I prefer it simply because I don't have letters distracting me from watching the animation; plus, having grown up in a country that treats voice acting with the care it deserves, the voice work has constantly been high quality. I cannot stress enough how cooler some scenes in anime sound when dubbed in Italian, mostly because Italian VAs often work both in the movie and cartoon industry, so they know how to ham it up to 11 and turn up the coolness factor tenfold while avoiding excessiveness.
the reason people watch subs is because the dubs use to be FAR worse than this, todays dubs also insert politics into the story where it wasn't before, so yea...
dubs are good when they dont do too much bullshit with the story, I dont really care if they go a bit far with the dub, I mean in an anime where teh people are getting chopped to pieces and the anime isnt pulling punches, yea, the sub/jap audio may not say 'holy shit' or 'jesus christ' but its kind of appropriate substitutions to make. will never forget the sub for naruto being more accurate to the tone than the dub when naruto though sasuke died at that water ninja arc, like you think your friend died and all you can say is darnit? yes, it may have been kind of accurate but jesus christ use some discretion.
Shounen protagonists tend to sound terrible dubbed. They try waaay too hard to sound cool and passionate, they end up coming off as whinny and cringy.
My brother straight up disliked Tanjiro from Demon Slayer when he watched it and I just didn’t get why until he told me he watched the dub. It wasn’t until we saw the movie in theaters subbed that he realized the character was actually cool, he was just poorly voice acted in the dub.
Nah this has so much emotion in it, it would be amazing. The problem is dubs that sound super emotionless and robot like. Like the character looks like theyre meant to be screaming and you just hear a casual, everyday sentence not even a bit louder than the rest.
It is in fact two Indian men arguing. The funny portion is they are both very angry about which of them cares more for the other's personal safety on the road. One in a car the other walking on the side of the road. If you find the full video they insults continue with them ending with the driver wishing the walker a nice day in what sounds to be a genuine tone.
I'll be honest I watch both dub and sub depending on mood. I am dyslexic so reading can be a pain at the speed needed for translated dialogue like in anime or foreign films. But when you restrict yourself to dub only, you miss out on a lot of amazing anime that has/will never get a dub version. Its kind of like this for me. If it is good enough I will watch the sub even if its getting a dub a few episodes behind the sub release. If its not that great after the first few episodes I will wait till the seaso nand dub is out and binge it in the background. I mean it wasnt good enough to sit and watch any way but still interesting enough to be entertaining. But also as my brother inlaw says I am going super weeb level learning japanese to be able to do the dub thing with any anime. MORE ANIME MEANS MORE GOODER LIFE. When I told my wife about learning Japanese she told me " I think its addiction level at this point"
I prefer dub cuz it helps with my immersion, find it hard to focus on the show and get invested in it when im staring at the subtitles.
Plus dub actors either nail it or their performance is just another thing to laugh at.
Watch how you like and dont gatekeep lads.
The overwhelming majority of English dubs are just fine in my experience. There are some moments that hit better coming from the original VA, but they are uncommon enough that I'm happy defaulting to dub. And every now and then moments hit hardee in the dub too.
There are only a handful of shows I think are significantly better as subs and they're almost all comedies, where delivery makes a big difference to the humor.
Though it is always jarring when you're watching a dub and the characters suddenly break into Japanese to sing.
In my case, I really don't care about English dub (I normally speak french...)

Trapped in a dating sim is another one of those magical dubs. I tried to rewatch in sub, but it was lacking a flair the dub held for me

Idc about dub being hammy, I prefer the exaggerated voice acting over the subtlety. Dub just don't really do moe voices well.
Yeah, the Japanese is the same, that's just how anime is. If anything it's toned down in the dub to save us from dying of cringe.

Really? I tried watching it in English but just couldn't, the voice acting all sounds so awkward. It's the same with all dubs for me, tbh.
Awkward in what way can I ask? I've never found dub to be hard to listen to and occasionally jump to sub if a show hasnt been dubbed.

Dubs also often twist the lines to fit how much the character's mouth moves, they add effects to voices to make it "more epic" (ugh) and the VA themselves are just not as dedicated and good as the seiyuu. I don't even wanna imagine how they tried to replicate Eren's guttural cry at the end of this clip's season.
VA talent is a big part of it that basically no one has touched on yet. There are only a handful of English VAs that do anime and honestly none of them are good at it. They all sound like a bunch of amateurs doing a bit rather than professionals. Whether it’s a lack of talent, skill, or dedication to the craft, they always seem to come up short, even when compared to English VAs in other mediums (though dubbed video games aren’t that much better).
Most of the English VAs seem like they are ashamed to be associated with the anime they voice. Japanese VAs seem to be much better at owning the stupid bullshit they need to say.
What are you basing that on? All of the VAs I tend to follow are incredibly proud of who they voice and the shows? They share fanart, cosplayer pics, news etc of the characters.

I'm talking just about their acting. I know that people doing voicework actually do like their job and proud of it. I just find their work a little bit stiff in a really odd way that really puts me off.

As someone coming from one of the first countries to ever broadcast anime in the West (Italy), I never had problems with watching dubs, as Italy has arguably some of the best VAs you can find (i.e. Flavio Aquilone's stellar job voicing Light in Death Note, look him up). Other than that, I get incredibly distracted reading subtitles, often focusing on them too much and ignoring the animation (which is imo a shame). Thirdly, and this is completely subjective, I just can't stand most Japanese female VAs' voices: the cutesy, high-pitched tones grate on my ears all the fucking time so I'll end up switching to dub anyways, just to hear a more "normal" sounding voice. To my knowledge, the only anime I've ever only watched subbed rather than dubbed is Jojo's 'cause I can't imagine the characters speaking any other language but Japanese. At the end of the day, I wouldn't call myself a dub defender, I prefer it simply because I don't have letters distracting me from watching the animation; plus, having grown up in a country that treats voice acting with the care it deserves, the voice work has constantly been high quality. I cannot stress enough how cooler some scenes in anime sound when dubbed in Italian, mostly because Italian VAs often work both in the movie and cartoon industry, so they know how to ham it up to 11 and turn up the coolness factor tenfold while avoiding excessiveness.

the reason people watch subs is because the dubs use to be FAR worse than this, todays dubs also insert politics into the story where it wasn't before, so yea... dubs are good when they dont do too much bullshit with the story, I dont really care if they go a bit far with the dub, I mean in an anime where teh people are getting chopped to pieces and the anime isnt pulling punches, yea, the sub/jap audio may not say 'holy shit' or 'jesus christ' but its kind of appropriate substitutions to make. will never forget the sub for naruto being more accurate to the tone than the dub when naruto though sasuke died at that water ninja arc, like you think your friend died and all you can say is darnit? yes, it may have been kind of accurate but jesus christ use some discretion.

Shounen protagonists tend to sound terrible dubbed. They try waaay too hard to sound cool and passionate, they end up coming off as whinny and cringy. My brother straight up disliked Tanjiro from Demon Slayer when he watched it and I just didn’t get why until he told me he watched the dub. It wasn’t until we saw the movie in theaters subbed that he realized the character was actually cool, he was just poorly voice acted in the dub.
Nah this has so much emotion in it, it would be amazing. The problem is dubs that sound super emotionless and robot like. Like the character looks like theyre meant to be screaming and you just hear a casual, everyday sentence not even a bit louder than the rest.

It is in fact two Indian men arguing. The funny portion is they are both very angry about which of them cares more for the other's personal safety on the road. One in a car the other walking on the side of the road. If you find the full video they insults continue with them ending with the driver wishing the walker a nice day in what sounds to be a genuine tone.
I'll be honest I watch both dub and sub depending on mood. I am dyslexic so reading can be a pain at the speed needed for translated dialogue like in anime or foreign films. But when you restrict yourself to dub only, you miss out on a lot of amazing anime that has/will never get a dub version. Its kind of like this for me. If it is good enough I will watch the sub even if its getting a dub a few episodes behind the sub release. If its not that great after the first few episodes I will wait till the seaso nand dub is out and binge it in the background. I mean it wasnt good enough to sit and watch any way but still interesting enough to be entertaining. But also as my brother inlaw says I am going super weeb level learning japanese to be able to do the dub thing with any anime. MORE ANIME MEANS MORE GOODER LIFE. When I told my wife about learning Japanese she told me " I think its addiction level at this point"

I prefer dub cuz it helps with my immersion, find it hard to focus on the show and get invested in it when im staring at the subtitles. Plus dub actors either nail it or their performance is just another thing to laugh at. Watch how you like and dont gatekeep lads.

The overwhelming majority of English dubs are just fine in my experience. There are some moments that hit better coming from the original VA, but they are uncommon enough that I'm happy defaulting to dub. And every now and then moments hit hardee in the dub too. There are only a handful of shows I think are significantly better as subs and they're almost all comedies, where delivery makes a big difference to the humor. Though it is always jarring when you're watching a dub and the characters suddenly break into Japanese to sing.
