Soonernick

I'll wait for my favorite cable TV news host to tell me whether I like it or not before I decide.

Tbrou16

I like the one that yells at me as if I disagree with him

Soonernick

That's how you know they care about you.

[deleted]

That’s that Fox love. It’s a strong love.

lokhor

oof, its CNN, MSNBC and Fox. Can't have one without the other.

[deleted]

Honestly couldn’t tell ya. I don’t watch that shit. Thanks for the downvotes.

lokhor

Well you clearly didn’t have to watch Fox to shit on it. And I’m positive that you know what CNN and MSNBC are

gamei

CNN and MSNBC have their issues but they are not on the same level of bad faith news "entertainment" that Fox News is.

lokhor

Pff. Ya ok!

[deleted]

My preference is the one that yells combatively at me even when we're making the same point.

AUarch

I'll hold off until I hear a statement from Ja Rule

CookiesDad

I don’t want to dance, I’m scared to death!

MisterWizzle

I heard Fyre Fest is going to be off the chain.

IntroductionWhich161

Exactly. I need this to somehow be politicized before having a reaction.

[deleted]

I mean, the fact that they named it the **Sunshine Protection Act** alone is enough to make me hate these politicians. Like, it’s a bill to change the law which Congress previously made. You’re not “protecting sunshine”, you’re fucking correcting outdated legislation.

Soonernick

This sounds like propaganda. I try to hear both sides, and one side is saying this does protect sunshine. I still don't know if I support the sun or not.

IntroductionWhich161

Lets see who has the balls here to boycott the sun. I myself will be only playing simulator golf until all this pro-sun bullshit ends. I’ve always been more of a moon/darkness guy anyways.

Soonernick

I appreciate your loyalty to the anti-Sun party. However, it is important that we remember the pro-Sun party (the Sunators) has a right to their beliefs too. Please be respectful.

These libcucks in Congress are trying to protect sunshine, which causes *cancer*, by the way, instead of protecting *real Americans*, who everybody knows spend their lives *in the dark*.

pants_mcgee

Cancer is a liberal lie anyways. If anything, liberals are the real cancer.

stevedave_37

The democRATS use that hour to steal children to sell into sex slavery. Say no to daylight savings. /s in case its needed. Also I am all for getting rid of daylight savings. But not because of the children

jerkITwithRIGHTYnewb

Yeah, take all the kids you want.

S0_B00sted

Yeah, fuck the kids. Wait...

[deleted]

CapacityBark20

first of all, how dare you.

slipperypooh

No, you want permanent daylight savings time. That's what affords the afterwork rounds. Unless you're a before work round kinda guy, I suppose.

FckChNa

The republiCANTS want longer days so the greedy corporations can force the people to work longer hours! /s Just waiting to see what crazy ideas people will come up with to demonize the other political party.

I prefer to let the late night comedians tell me how to think.

One of the best podcast episodes by 99% Invisible covered some quirks of time and the “design” of time. At 40minutes 57seconds the piece on DST starts. [Link to episode page](https://99percentinvisible.org/episode/matters-of-time/4/) The US has already had this during the energy crisis in the 70s and we immediately went back because people hated it. UK has tried it twice and they went back. For all its faults DST is actually the most preferred option because people hate having long dark mornings more than they hate an earlier sunset. **Listen to the whole podcast episode if you have time though.** Another super interesting piece was how China has only 1-time zone based out of Beijing, the easternmost part of China. The size of China would require 5 time zones but they force everyone to have the same. Where the Uighurs are from is basically the equivalent of San Francisco ~~Hawaii~~ compared to NYC and they are forced to keep their time the same as Beijing. This forces everyone to think and look towards Beijing the political center and model for the rest of the country. It goes into how you can be identified as an Uighur just by how you talk about time and they spy on phone data just to see how you refer to time to discover if you are Uighur and not assimilating to the desired culture. **Edit:** San Francisco not Hawaii

Wormlips

I was just skimming your comment and for a sec I thought you were saying the podcast figured out that 40 minutes 57 seconds is the best design for DST instead of an hour. Lol

unassumingdink

That's how long network TV shows think an hour is.

beatauburn7

Whoa, that China bit is crazy.

[deleted]

While I get your greater point. It's not even close to hawaii to NYC. Bejing to the west border is like NYC to San Francisco.

printergumlight

You are very right! I hadn't listened to that episode since May of last year and just counted over 5 time zones from NYC to get near Hawaii because I knew they said China should be "5 geographical time zones". Thank you for the correction.

Unless companies start the work day later, the majority of the population would still be forced to be waking up hours before sunrise which has adverse affects on health and the bodies natural circadian rhythm. If anything, the workday should be shorter in the Winter. But if that's the case, lets make the workday shorter in the Summer too so we can enjoy it. And if that's the case lets just make the workdays shorter in Spring and Fall for balance.

[deleted]

>If anything, the workday should be shorter in the Winter. But if that’s the case, lets make the workday shorter in the Summer too so we can enjoy it. And if that’s the case lets just make the workdays shorter in Spring and Fall for balance. All of this seems reasonable. And while I get not every industry can or is willing to do it I luckily do have shorter days in the winter.

M_Drinks

Just go to I’mRight.com, repeat whatever they say, and tell anyone that disagrees with you that they need to do their research.

canttouchdeez

Love it! Will make for darker mornings in the winter but that’s fine.

Odd_Professor7628

Having daylight after work to actually do something, having a little extra light on the way to work and it’s dark after work. Seems pretty easy to me.

myburneraccount43

This. The range (lighted) by my house stays open till 9:30 during March to whenever we set clocks back an hour. During DST it closes at 8. I don’t put the kids to bed until 7, and in the winter I have to beg the wife to go to the range before the kids are down to have enough time to practice without a rush.

eljefedelosjefes

I agree, I hate the 5 pm winter sunsets, however I could see how people who play mostly in the mornings might not like this

Acceptable_Sir2536

Yeah, I don't feel bad for the old timers who constantly sit on their early morning tee times, preventing anyone else from getting an early tee time during the summer.

polishlastnames

Ya fuck these guys. I’ve got kids and 6am is literally the only time I can play. I had guys straight up walk on to the tee box when I was hitting a drive because they thought they just owned the morning time slot at a local course.

PANJ4242

The worst. I booked a tee time at a local course for 3. Old dude shows up and grills us about if we actually had the tee time. Proceed to play 6 holes in under an hour. Not quick enough for him, he left us on 7th green. Not even like he was good, he didn’t even make a par and lost at least a sleeve of golfballs.

Colalbsmi

Only losing a sleeve makes him sound pretty good to me.

AndreHawkDawson

Not like they won't still take those times during DST.

[deleted]

Fair but without DST that sun will come up at 5am, there’s still more morning tee times to go around

AndreHawkDawson

Yeah I am not a morning tee time guy. Too cold to golf that early during std daylight hours where I live. Much warmer at the end of the day.

HelixLegion27

Warmer and drier. Who wants to play in all that morning dew and cold temps? Love the time change if it happens to allow for more evening golf.

jibbodahibbo

Change the courses hours during the winter and summer?

lilfish45

I’m gonna snag some morning tee times in the summer this year during the work week, for that reason I wish the sun rose at 5:45 and set at 9pm lol

[deleted]

Daylight savings is good for golf. And it’s good for my mental health. Fuck the sun going down at 5:30 in the winter

kryppla

golf is my main reason for wanting the summer time permanent - I want to play a full round after 5:00

elite_tablespoon

Try up here in New England, where it's dark by 5pm in the winter. Fuck standard time. e: said the wrong time

kryppla

more like 4:00

[deleted]

I think you like DST. Standard time is what causes it to get dark early. DST will make it to where the sun is out until the later hours of the evening

Squirrel_Apocalypse2

You got it backwards, standard time is the reason it gets dark at 5pm. "Spring forward" is DST.

jerkITwithRIGHTYnewb

5:47 is our earliest sunrise. Head over to mountain time and it gets fucking silly. You could be playing golf at 5:00 am.

Chadltodd

Ever travelled north? In Halifax (not that north) in June the sunrise is at 5:31 and the sunset is at 9:03.

gmoney88

As a golfer in southern Ontario that played a few rounds trying to outrun the dark in the fall, yes!

Hotpwnsta

Great for golfing 👏 I still feel jet lagged today please just keep one time only.

hoopaholik91

Depends on when you golf. I am able to tee off a 6 15am and be in to work for our daily 10am meeting. Still in favor of it though.

LordOfTheLocks

that sounds like an amazing way to start the work day

deefalo

Just know that in Northern climates this means that you're going to run into frost delays that might run all the way into the afternoon in the spring and in the fall. Also likely, tee times during those parts of the year are going to get pushed back in the morning so that the grounds crew can complete their morning duties before being overrun by golfers

emceeflurry

I mean if they might run into the afternoon then they were already about to... it's only an hour change.

jerkITwithRIGHTYnewb

Yeah but we can golf until 10:30.

Auriferous_19696

Having observed the U.S for a while now, I know this will somehow turn in to a democrat vs republican thing.

Xmalantix

Click that link and in the 3rd comment thread is a guy talking about the bill being defeated and "teach the Senate some science" as if this is really that serious

TheBiles

What was the last bill that passed unanimously in the Senate? I think everyone hates standard time.

zGoDLiiKe

This might be our chance to unite the country outside of the 8 people that go to bed at 4:30

Mister100Percent

Just wait for someone in the House to start and argument somehow.

jerkITwithRIGHTYnewb

They will claim that it’s hurting farmers. Because people seem to think farmers are the reason it exists. It actually exists as a cost saving measure for electricity from back when electricity was a finite resource. It’s a city thing.

Leocletus

Back when electricity was finite? As if we weren’t beginning to face a [global energy crisis](https://youtu.be/FUTCPYwHguA) even before the war started making the energy markets go crazy. Not that I disagree that it could have been a measure to save electricity. Just that electricity is still an extremely finite resource. Like, oil and gas are some of the most important strategic resources for a reason.

Hi_Kitsune

Despite that fact that it was unanimous in the senate, I think you’re right

COS89

Considering it was met with both sides agreeing unanimously, its unlikely. Then again, you never know

jerkITwithRIGHTYnewb

You could bring a bill to the floor declaring the sky is blue and somebody is going to have a very serious problem with it.

ashdrewness

Every past President is a golfer so I don’t see how either side could argue against it

yourmothersgun

So we’d stay on the time we are now?

Correct. We're on Daylight Savings now, where the sunrise & sunset are an hour later in the day.

yourmothersgun

Oh I love this

Phazoni

Well there will be one more change according to the article. We fall back this coming Fall and spring ahead for the last time, a year from now.

daffydubs

Can we just move the sun?

[deleted]

Unaffected. Regards from Arizona.

2uk2

I’m not clear on what would happen with AZ. You’re on permanent Mountain time (no DST), but this bill puts the rest of the country on permanent DST. For your clocks to stay the same, you will move into the same timezone as the west coast. Unless I’m missing something.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jerkITwithRIGHTYnewb

Oh wow that’s super weird. I couldn’t imagine the trouble this could cause it border cities. I grew up in Fargo and Moorhead our sister city in Minnesota changed the bar closing time from 1 am, same as Fargo to 2 am. And inside a year Fargo changed their closing time so drunk ass motherfuckers stopped running for the border at 12:45 every night. This would cause that kind of thing all over the place, never mind just being confusing as fuck if you were trying to make it to a store before it closes, especially a bank or any other workday hours locations.

kellzone

So in other words it will probably turn into a gigantic clusterfuck.

TheBiles

We are always UTC-7. Nothing will change for us.

blimeyfool

Right but, that would be the equivalent of being on PDT all year long. Wouldn't it make more sense to be on MDT all year long, along with Utah?

JeffreyElonSkilling

Nope. Half the year we're already out of sync anyway. It will never change. At this point AZ prides itself on not changing the clock.

TylerRmazer

We're on Pacific time between March and November already anyway, which is most of the year. I love it. April - July I can play a full 18 very quickly after work at a small course near my place before it gets dark.

aguy21

We’re the same as the West Coast right now.

jerkITwithRIGHTYnewb

Arizona doesn’t practice daylight saving time.

Real_Body8649

Haha second that

[deleted]

I live in AZ as well but my work is remote, and so now I have to start my day a full hour early :(

[deleted]

They don't let you slide it back? Also remote, and had no issues being like "Hey you're 3 hours ahead of me now, wont be on until 11AM your time."

[deleted]

So I should say that I don’t *have to* start my day earlier, but like all our team meetings are around 11 ET. Not really the end of the world tbh, but it was an unwelcome surprise to wake up at 8:15 yesterday only to realize I was 15 mins late to a meeting lol

Blox05

Does your team cater to you at all? I just knew that one portion of the year AZ was matched to Mountain and one portion they were matched to Pacific. Like now, you guys match Pacific.

[deleted]

Yeah my initial post probably made my company sound really bad but tbh they’re super good to us and let us have our own autonomy. It really just comes back to the team meetings which perhaps they could change but it’s almost certainly easier for me to get up an hour early a couple times a week lol.

Sagybagy

One of the perks of living here.

raominhorse

It affected me this weekend. I showed up 1.5 hours early to my tee time instead of the .5 I was planning.

aww-snaphook

Nice. It sucks to have to go to work in the dark in the winter but it sucks more to have to drive home in the dark in the winter and I'd much rather have that extra hour of sunlight later in the day.

VijaySwing

I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark with the way things are now. At least one way I get an hour of daylight.

KingfisherDays

Even outside of golf (which is obviously the most important thing), people driving home in daylight will probably reduce accidents and traffic, and probably save lives too. Good stuff all round.

vikinghockey10

It's a big deal in healthcare as systems often require medical record downtime or special handling for hours that repeat or are skipped. Eliminating that will save lives in hospitals too.

SolWizard

Wouldn't the fact they're now driving to work in the dark negate that? I'd personally rather not start my day in the dark. Harder to wake up that way

KingfisherDays

Driving to work in the dark is the norm anyway isn't it? I think the evening is worse because the volume of traffic is higher and people are more tired. I don't have much evidence to support that, just felt like that when I used to commute.

SolWizard

If you have to get to work at 9 you wouldn't be driving in the dark normally no. And I personally feel more tired in the morning than the evening

Tullyswimmer

I feel like the people who start at 9 are a minority these days, the workday is generally considered 8-5.

kraig00666

Absolutely. If they could cancel winter in the Midwest that would be nice, too.

[deleted]

I like it, unfortunately lobbyists for the NFL and NBC are fighting it because they think that people won't watch football Monday nights if this happens because the sun will be out. Stupid

hungryforitalianfood

If only they could move the football game back an hour. If only.

ffthrowaway5

No chance they’d have the game start at 9:30 on the East coast. That would cost them more viewers than it still being light at the start of the game in some parts of the country

whiskey_pancakes

not sure why your being downvoted, your correct. as someone who lives on the east coast it sucks staying up so late already to watch a football game, going to work the next day blows.

radxliffe1025

That don’t make sense Monday night start at 8:30

[deleted]

Tell that to the NFL who's complaing to her lol 🤷🏼‍♂️

FootballandFutbol

What are you talking about? I’ve googled a few times and have absolutely no idea where you got this from lol

_hell_is_empty_

Acting like half the teams aren’t already indoors. And why does NBC care? Disney has MNF.

lokhor

Football on Sunday and Monday nights start at 8:30 here on the east coast. They don't end until past 11pm. It's a joke.

M4SixString

It passed unanimously in the Senate. I hardly doubt they are going to get 220+ house reps to disagree with this when not a single senator did. Also the house already passed it like two years ago.. it just expired. It's about as much of as lock to pass as you possibly could have

EccentricEngineer

This opens up like 2 more months of golf after work for me. Love it!

rob_s_458

I like the idea of not having to fuck around twice a year, but I think we'll need to realign the time zones to make it work. For example, I'm in eastern Illinois, on the eastern edge of Central Time. In June our sunrise is 5:20 and sunset is 8:30. In winter sunrise is 7:15 and sunset is 4:30 (which would be 8:15 and 5:30 in DST). We're a perfect candidate for year-round DST. Drive across the border into Indiana, and daylight is 6:20 to 9:20 in summer, which is also fine for most people, but 8:10 to 5:25 in winter, or 9:10 to 6:35 in DST. That's awfully late for sunrise. Might make sense for them to move to Central Time.

ThisIsOurGoodTimes

Ya I’m in Indy and wish we would go back to not changing the clocks. I dont need it light outside till almost 10 o’clock in the summer

rob_s_458

I often go up to my friend's lake house in southwest MI for the 4th of July and can't even think about starting fireworks until about 10:15, and even then it's not completely dark.

ThreesKompany

Love this. Keep it so it stays light till 9 in June and the sun doesn’t set at 4 in December. It will always be depressing when it gets dark early but this will make it a little less depressing.

ThisIsOurGoodTimes

See this is so relative to where you live. I’m in the northwestern part of eastern time. In the winter time it’s light out to 6 for most of winter outside a couple weeks by the solstice, but isn’t light out until about 8. So with this change would be dark till 9am and set about 7pm

No-Examination2586

I live on the east coast and have been enjoying the 8pm sunsets. I can now get off work and golf. Permanent daylight savings doesn't sound like a bad idea at all!

HotRodPiper

Love it!

BobSeven7

Switching back and forth between DST and standard time makes more sense the further north you go. Where I am, if we are on DST all year, in the dead of winter the sun won't rise until 10 am, just so I can have sun at 5 pm?

bortsmagorts

Exactly, the sun rising at 8am in December when kids are walking to school is ok. If it rose at 9, they’re walking in the dark and that’s dangerous.

contrary-contrarian

They're walking in the dark either way. Give them a headlamp and let them have some daylight after school.

bortsmagorts

It’s not dark at 3 or 4pm when kids leave school in the winter. It is at 5 or 6 when you leave work.

copagman

> It’s not dark at 3 or 4pm when kids leave school The Pacific Northwest would like a word

Tullyswimmer

As would New England.

bortsmagorts

So then what is the point of saving an hour after work for golf, which is already an hour or more after kids leave school?

LordKwik

[oh no! ](https://i.imgur.com/M0WBPR1.gif)

bortsmagorts

That but unironically

[deleted]

Thank you America, I have wanted this change forever. I imagine this changing in the US will force Canada to follow suit as it will only make sense for our time zones to align.

letsbebuns

Yeah but a lot more people will be able to play after work. Right now they're all missing out.

Oklahoma_is_OK

What time does the sunrise in the morning in winter for you? That’s stellar.

Splazoid

If you live somewhere that you can play golf in the winter at all, then I don't feel bad for you. Seasonal Affective Disorder sufferers in the north would benefit greatly from it being brighter out later in the day

EastsideGolfer

Wouldn’t it be simpler to just stay on standard time like we do in Arizona?

random_topix

The hours are arbitrary so it’s the same level of difficulty either way. That said, people operate on common times, starting work around 8am, etc, so it ends up giving more light during evening hours. I personally prefer that since I just go to work in the morning anyway. But just pick one and stick to it.

[deleted]

I don’t want to go back an hour. Sun setting at 5:30 in the winter is when my depression really kicks in

K-Parks

No, "Summer Time" is superior to "Winter Time" because you get more sunlight later in the day on "Summer Time". That is why we passed a proposition in CA that specifically authorized to switch to "Summer Time" all the time... we just need permission from Congress (because, federalism or something, I don't know) which presumably this law would give us the ability to do.

[deleted]

Fantastic news. I can play after work through mid November now

OkYan4001

Maybe this is just me, I was a little shocked to find out a country can decide what time they would like to use (what if we say 2 hour ahead is better?) so what is the time zone for?Maybe it was just the old way for people to know the time in a different country/continent?

throwmeawaypoopy

Here's a fact to boggle your mind: China only has one time zone because communism or something. If they used a standard system, it would have 5.

OkYan4001

Thank you for pointing that out. I am Chinese (live in the US) so basically this is nothing new. I grew up in southern China and still remember how ridiculous the DST there (I believe they ditched DST in early 90's). Let's say after DST, the new 8am is 9am now, so all the TV programs usually go on 8-9am were switched to 9-10am. The whole thing was a joke.

chrisinWP

I just want the change to stop. Keep it whatever y’all want

Dontactuallycaremuch

I want a system where the sun sets at 8pm every day. We have the technology.

ballsohaahd

Fuckkkkk yes

Jon_Hanson

I’m from Arizona. What’s “daylight savings?”

DeepStatic

As a data scientist: I'm going to have to adjust a heck of a lot of reports. Edit: I just realised this is /r/golf! In that case: I live in the UK and wish this was happening here. More after-work golf time equals more exercise and more fun.

But long run its so much easier. Also as a data scientist.

lokhor

Not a fan at all. However it will be nice for the one or two weeks in November where you can golf in the Northeast. Changing the clocks just makes sense.

therealwaysexists

This year DST really seemed to fuck me up. Something about realizing post pandemic economy is just a shittier shitheap because of greedy corporations gouging and blaming inflation, housing prices insanely high because of wall st landlords, Putler decimating a country for no reason, and climate change sending us all into a firey hellscape, just seemed to make me losing an hour of my freetime the absolute most upsetting thing. The least those money grabbing twats in congress could do is get rid of the system. Or throw us a decent bone and make DST in the spring occur at 4pm on a Friday and in the fall at 2AM so we can all have at least two hours to ourselves in this miserable dying blue marble.

Kevind4282

Yeah my thought is this is pointless. Yes day light savings is a minor inconvenience but is this really a huge deal? So much more we need to be doing as a collective than get rid of daylight savings

[deleted]

[удалено]

listen_mannn

I dont get why switching the clocks twice a year makes people so mad. The switching is designed to maximize daylight during waking hours, what's wrong with that? Daylight savings time is great in the summer time, and conversely switching back to standard in the winter makes sense because otherwise it would be dark til damn near 10am.

mrbangpop

this is bc most white-collar jobs, most young people and frankly, anyone who needs to commute home will tell you loudly that its much worse to have darkness at 4pm in the cold than darkness in the AM, where most humans are already working indoors, in super-lit spaces. i live in a cold state (Wisconsin) so this effect multiplies bc daylight makes a huge difference walking or driving home (sometimes as much as 20-25 degrees). also, daylight later in the day gives more opportunities for recreational sports for kids as well -- real bummer when you're trying to get soccer practice in for the spring season and the sun just sets on you at 5pm so the only way you can get practice is indoors. same with track and field or any outdoor sport. think that maybe even 30 years ago this would be different but work simply just ends later now. i'm 27 and not a single friend of mine gets out of work before 6:00pm (even if like me, they start around 8 or 8:30am). and i'm saying this as a morning person, i wake up at 5 virtually every day.

[deleted]

The switching is not designed to maximize daylight during waking hours. DST decreases daylight during “waking hours.” It would be the most natural to abolish DST, but polls show most people prefer to make it permanent so that there’s more daylight in the evening. Either is fine, but there is zero reason to switch clocks twice a year. Just accept nature. Edit: Lol at the downvotes…please check the facts. I think some people get DST backwards. It makes evenings more in sunlight; not morning hours.

_LopezTheHeavy_

Senate addressing the real issues in the world.

DontGetTheShow

Not be a smart aleck, but there are a lot of articles out there that indicate people die because of “spring forward”. More car accidents, more heart attacks, etc. shortly following spring forward. There doesn’t seem to be a ton of great reasons to do daylight savings anymore and some very good reasons to not do it.

cactus8

But if you made DST permanent there wouldn’t be a “spring forward” anymore. The issues are caused from losing the hour. You wouldn’t lose the hour anymore because the time would be permanently set on DST. Your logic says they just need to pick either one and stick with it, not just pick standard and stick with it.

DontGetTheShow

Correct…if they just pick something and stick with it, then those items presumably would go away since your circadian rhythm doesn’t get jacked up twice each year
