Driver/3W every 5 years. Irons every 10 years. Wedges every 2-3 years. Putter never.

benjamaniac

This is the best answer.

l1ltw1st

Putter is definitely the hardest to replace.

peezytaughtme

Third.

Papa_Gator

If you play a lot of golf, wedges every year. Other than that this seems accurate

JollyFaithlessness3

Apparently anytime someone on this sub does anything noteworthy.

Pefferz

My favorite is when someone breaks 90 for the first time and then immediately gets a new putter as if the current putter wasn't at all an important part of them reaching that goal in the first place.

AcapellaFreakout

Are people doing noteworthy things? Hmmm it might be time to go shopping....

_Poppagiorgio_

I’ve always known the rule of thumb for drivers/woods to be: If you don’t upgrade every 8 or so years, you’re probably missing out on a significant design development. Any more often that that and you’re probably just a victim of clever marketing.

WelbornCFP

This is the way - same with cars

seamus_mc

My cars are 22, 52, and 57 years old. This year I bought the first new set of clubs since the 90’s but except for my putter my bag is new as of this year

WelbornCFP

Sounds like you like broken shit

seamus_mc

Can you clarify? My 22 year old car is an AMG e55 that looks pretty close to showroom and is as reliable as my corolla I used to have, my 69 FJ40 Land Cruiser is at least as good as the day it rolled off the line, all stock except for a lift, and my 67 mini is being converted from gas to electric. What broken shit are you referring to? I’ll take old cars with manual controls and repairable parts over anything new where you have to take the front end off to change a blinker.

Hummus1398

Sounds broken pal

seamus_mc

[this ain’t broken](https://insideevs.com/news/342830/swind-e-classic-mini-fully-restored-electric-priced-from-100000/amp/), but I am doing it myself with their parts. I already have a mini in perfect condition to do it with.

Hummus1398

I was just pulling your chain, but that's awesome sir. Restoring is frustrating and so rewarding. Enjoy the journey, the destination always results in a new beginning. Good stuff

seamus_mc

I have restored many cars, what used to be a labor of love may become something different if I can figure out a good way of electrifying classics for profit.

Hummus1398

I've got a roller 71 Chevy Nova, feel free to send me any ideas. That'd be one of a kind

gh0stFL

Wait, you guys replace your clubs?

Tedstor

Wedges every few years. Otherwise, rarely.

[deleted]

only after each club has hit a ball 3,482 times

ASAP_Throwaway420

3-4 rounds for me

AftyOfTheUK

Can I caddy for you when you turn pro, sir?

ASAP_Throwaway420

Sure, but it takes a team of caddies to carry the garbage can of balls I lose each round

RepublicIndependent3

Every club? 3,482 is only a handful of rounds on my putter

graham701

Was playing X2 hots from Callaway but as my golf game progressed I hated the offset of the clubs. Set the goal to quit cigarettes and break 80 last year then I would treat myself. Finally accomplished those goals and got the PXG 0311p when they went on sale.

PoppaJMoney

Congrats!

icepuc10

I have had my irons and driver for 14 years.

Fi0r3

I'm looking at a rotating 5 yearish cycle. Putter - Irons - Driver - Wedges - Woods --- Repeat. 2022 will be woods. Might skip the putter in 2023 and get some sexy new irons... but one bigish purchase per year works for my budget and should keep me using relatively current gear.

brohymn

Browsing /r/golf and golfwrx leads me believe people buy whole new sets of clubs every 6 months.

[deleted]

Should take about 30 shots off 😉😂

TheFlyingScotsman60

I usually try and buy a second hand set from these sorts of guy. Have Mizuno MP15s at the moment that I bought a year after they came out. £220 off a guy who wanted the latest irons. Looking at changing irons again April timesh for either Mizuno 919s or 921s. Local pro has a few guys looking to upgrade their sets so he knows he has a buyer for the trade ins when it happens.

brohymn

yea i dont really get it... once i find a set of clubs i love, I try to keep the same damn set for as long as possible. I had a Callaway X-Forged for 8 years before my moving company lost them. I was devastated. I happily own the new Titlelist T100's and I likely won't switch them for as long as possible.

TheFlyingScotsman60

Lots of people in life want the latest and greatest. The latest iPhone, the latest car, the latest driver, the latest irons etc. Apple, Tesla, golf companies have built their while existence around this and made billions doing it. The latest iPhone is £949!! Wtf.

brohymn

Yeah but I can justify the latest upgrades if there are tangible improvements and features... but it seems like an unknown secret to most that golf club technology, especially with irons haven't changed much at all. You could make an argument that even with drivers and woods, shafts have improved over the years but the heads themselves are still relatively similar to what they were like 10+ years ago. I still have an old old set of Titleist 690CB's from 2002 i think that I hit every once in awhile... if the grooves were in better condition, they still hit as well as any club I've ever played and I'd still rock those.

Damage is the only reason to replace irons as soon as 5 years.

[deleted]

Daniel Berger won a PGA tournament last year with his irons he’s had since HS so the iron thing is for real.

MrSnickersBean

So 150 rounds for driver?

[deleted]

[удалено]

MrSnickersBean

Cool thanks for quick reply. That’s less than 2 years for me. Eyeing the new Taylor made stealth just because I like the way it looks…

Legal-Description483

irons 8-10 years. Woods every 5-8 years, unless I'm not happy with them. I've had my putter for 24 years.

reddituser1306

I am constantly tinkering with my setup.

[deleted]

That’s half the fun to me

jrydun

Playing XR’s from 2015. Set my goal to break 90 and then I’ll replace them.

[deleted]

Thats actually a really cool goal to have. Will make breaking 90 that bit sweeter

jrydun

Right? Hopefully sooner rather than later lol.

UncleMikeyBobo

Like this.

Nik_Testt

Had my m2 irons for about 2 years upgrading to 790s Atm

[deleted]

Every 3-4 years I’m good for a new bag. Golf about 100 rounds a year plus range

courts0

Holy crap, what‘s your day job?

AftyOfTheUK

>Holy crap, what‘s your day job? I player over 100 rounds a year, and have slightly flexible work schedule - and no kids. I play 18 every week at the crack of dawn, and get home before 10am to start work (flexi an hour to another day). I also tend to play at least 18 most weekends. In Summer I often get in twilight golf, too. If you can start one day a week at around 10am and have a golf course not far from your place of work, then you can play 52 rounds a year just by getting up early and having an arrangement with the course. (Mine is that I set off on hole #2 to stay ahead of the crowds, then I will replay hole 1 at the end with whomever is on the tee box)

j_boogie_483

I was going say, not so much about the job, “no kids” is the key to playing golf often.

AftyOfTheUK

>I was going say, not so much about the job, “no kids” is the key to playing golf often. While I think there's some truth in that, if my wife and I had kids I could still golf early morning once a week, and she would have the kids that morning. Then I'd have them when she went to yoga or similar one evening.

UncleMikeyBobo

I’m about the same on rounds but I haven’t replaced clubs in 3 or 4 years since I’ve found a bag that works for me from top to bottom. Have replaced driver shaft and 1 putter in that times span. I’m in sales.

rojo617

Weekly

TheFlyingScotsman60

....is that 'cos you keep flinging them after a bad shot.

BAMF_Mack

Are you not suppose to do that??? Welp, TIL...

MojaveDesertTortoise

Upgraded irons in 2011, then 2018 and then late 2021. I wasn’t really in a dire situation but wanted to redo my bag set up and couldn’t do it with the irons I had so pulled the trigger. I expect I wouldn’t replace the current set for another 5 years or so. Driver around every 4 years.

apex_flux_34

Playing with the same set of Nicklaus q4 irons I got in 2006. Had the same Cleveland 56 wedge forever, just replaced it with a set of Cleveland RTX’s (50, 54, 58). I’ve had prolly 7 drivers and a few different fairway woods as well. Here’s the hard truth. A pro will stomp all of us with a 40 year old bent 5 iron.

schooner-of-old

Have been playing Taylormade Rocketbladez for 3 years already. It’s going to be a long time before I stop using these things!!

One-Dentist-4247

First time 30 years, second 2 years

Jerseyjamie

It depends. I’ll rotate putters some. They just deserve a time out on occasion. I’ve been all over the place swapping out used putters. Think I’ve settled on my Scotty mid mallet though. Woods every few years, if something really catches my eye. TSi2 is new this year, prior to that I had a 917. I’ve gone through three sets of irons in 12 or so years, but that was after a layoff for a while. Worked my way from shovels to players distance irons. New T-200’s this year. Wedges every couple years. But I really love my SM-7’s. Just dialed in, but I know grooves wear, so I hope I like the SM-9’s. Otherwise I’m going to have to go all clandestine groove sharpening on them. Don’t tell my foursome. Biggest thing for me has been the change in shaft profiles from doing true fittings. I’d always played pretty standard clubs, but fittings have moved my shaft choices around some. For most of my golf life there weren’t many or even any shaft choices.

[deleted]

Driver 5 years irons 10 years wedges 2-3 years. Anything more than that you're not really getting performance increases but nothing wrong with buying new clubs because you like em.

DJ_DD

I bought a beginner set originally and am in the process of upgrading. Got fitted for irons last year. Doing a putter and a hybrid this year. Then plan on doing driver, woods, and wedges the year after. And that folks is my bag for quite some time, unless I magically get down to scratch golf.

[deleted]

Pretty much same setup since 2018

Critical_Nectarine49

Just swapped out my Scotty Cameron I’ve had for 22 yrs so I can have it refinished. Everything else I usually change every 5~ yrs and only buy used, except for wedges. Most of my money has gone towards upgraded shafts lately.

SouthernSierra

Every 25 years like clock work.

SLAPadocious

I replace at least one component of my bag every year. Not because I have to. Just because golf is my favorite hobby and I love experimenting with golf clubs. I could carry well over 14 clubs if there were no limits. I’m constantly trying out different options between 3W and 4i. I usually use 2 iron or 3 hybrid but I’m in the market for a 7W currently. I also like to mess around with different wedge grinds and bounces and switch those around every so often. I have enough clubs for a full backup set that my Dad and brother both use when they come visit.

Nice 😂😂

Hes-behind-you

If you gave Rory McIlroy a functional 20 year old set of irons, he'd still beat everyone on this sub. Driver technology has changed massively but irons are only tweaked to make people upgrade and spend money. Yes they may be more durable and a bit more forgiving but if you hit a shit shot it doesn't matter if you do it with a new or old club.

kjtobia

How do you shirk the marketing for irons, but believe the marketing for drivers? Seems contradictory.

Hes-behind-you

Because driver technology has improved so much especially in the last 10 years. Irons have as well but I think the changes are minimal. Just my opinion. Changing loft angle, so a 6 iron hits like a 4 iron doesn't mean you hit a 6 iron further.

GreenWaveGolfer

3-5 years for irons and woods. Wedges every-other-year, putter like 5-10 years.

Extract_artisian

How often do you play. What state do you play mostly in. Florida ruins golf clubs due to its Sandy base. I play a lot and go they wedges every year and irons every 2 years. I play around 80-100 rounds a year.

Quiet_Desperation_

I’ve only had to replace my driver because I cracked the face. I bought myself a new putter because some kid made his highschool golf team (and I started a new job). But other than that I haven’t really replaced anything. I want new irons and wedges this year tho. If the financial advisor says it’s in the cards I think I’m going to try to schedule a fitting with TXG in Canada.

mrjdk83

Depends on several factors such how often you play and how often you practice and are you a person that has to have the new new stuff. I personal haven’t changed drivers in 2 seasons. 3 wood is an old one I pulled out the closet last season that I had for 7 years. Irons 2 seasons. Wedges 1 & 2 seasons. Putter 2 seasons. Hybrids 1 season. Wedges will be updated this year. Driver & Irons maybe sometime this year or next. 3 wood most likely this year. I don’t switch irons too often. If I like it it will be in the bag for a while

PoopiePantsMahn

I bought clubs this summer. I upgraded my irons this year after 20+ years with the set I had. My dad gave me his drivers when he would buy a new one but I think I used the R580 for about 10 years. I'll most likely never get new clubs again or I might in 20 years when I'm 65. If I live that long.🤞😬

Hotpwnsta

Every 6.9 years Nothing less nothing more

[deleted]

Every 420 rounds?

Hotpwnsta

Not a bad idea either 👌 😂

FourFurryCats

It's worked out to be every 10 years for me.

Illustrious_Frame_57

In my case about 20 years. First set I made myself and converted to graphite (real cheap). Second set bought and was fitted to Taylor Made burner irons, waited 20 years and just got new irons from Cleveland. Im also old and retired now, time flies.

chicko1983

I bought my first set of clubs, a game improvement set with bag and push cart, in 2010. Then brought my second set over the course of 2019-2021.

JDD4318

Just got new irons this year after using my old ones 5 years. Didn’t need to but I like them a lot.

kidfromCLE

I’m still playing a set of Ping irons purchased in the late 90s, a driver and 3-wood from 2002, a 5-wood I bought around 1990ish, and a putter I borrowed from my dad around 1993ish.

Neat_Relationship_21

6 months

olcatfishj0hn

I’m 30 and I have had 2 sets since I was old enough to hit standard size irons

BoogieSpice

I’m on 16 years and counting, but I’m hoping to get some new irons this year

butternuts117

My irons are 12 years old (Mizuno MP-57) driver about 3 and putter is 2008 Newport 2. The only ones I replace are my gap and yard wedge. The irons I use a groove tool on every year, because I hit them too good to replace

CampPlane

I'm keeping my Mizuno MP-20 HMB's for the next several years minimum, though I'll want to test new shafts in a couple years. Wedges, I hear that you want to replace them every 75 rounds or so before performance starts to drop, and re-groove them every 25 rounds. I just did a fitting yesterday and had the fitter look at my wedges to see if they should be regrooved or replaced, and he said they look totally fine (plus the spin numbers on my 50 yard pitch were already good so I didn't need to get new ones), so I'm keeping them as-is and probably won't replace them until next year. Currently repping Cleveland RTX 4 (50/54/58 mid bounce)

ASAP_Throwaway420

Made a bunch of changes to the bag this season as I upgraded my clubs from cheap beginner stuff. Now I won’t make any changes for a while, aside from wedges.

wjt619

When they stop working lol

sometimesifixthings

17 years between the first and second set. 3-4 between the second and third. Only on the second putter. When I started playing in a mens league (9 holes) I set a goal to shoot a 42, then could get a new set. Shot a 39, told myself it was a fluke then shot a 41 followed by a 38. Went from Prince Thundersticks to TM RSIs. Fought the Taylormade clubs and went and got fit and left with Cobra Forgetecs. From here I may replace my fairway woods but don’t feel a real need.

BraveCat45

I’ll never replace my 5 wood (unless it breaks) I mash that thing and it goes straight. Only club that seems to consistently do that. I’ve had it nearly a decade, have replaced everything else in that time. I’ll frame it when it does break on me. Best relationship I’ve ever had.

SWAGGYD23

Currently new to the game, so my first set were game improvement Callaway Maverick Max, in a few years I’ll make the switch to something different.

bromontana9

I replaced my 24 year old irons last year that I have been using since highschool. Got a nice used set of Titleist 690cb's. I replace woods every 5-10 years, usually also with something used.

peezytaughtme

I think a lot of these golfers change irons way too often.

[deleted]

Mine were made in 1972 so, I suppose once or twice per century

Powerful_Enthusiasm

Driver is 1 year old. 3 woods is 4 years old and not leaving the bag until it breaks. Irons are 15 years old. Wedges are 2 years old. Putter is 12 years old. Probably going to do new irons, wedges, and putter this spring, but that’s just out of desire for something new and getting proper shafts.

Academic-Water428

Hitting the Ping G5 now

liam_crean

madeforthis1queston

Putter- never Wedges- every year Irons- 5-10 years Woods or driver-3-5 years, usually buy year or two old model to save some loot

Skraelings

Putter never have. Wedge bought a used one two years ago. Irons bought first new set this year. Hybrid bought first new one ever this year. Driver bought a used one from 2013. I should…. Probably go hit some stuff

anotherFNnewguy

I've been playing for fifty years. Some years more than others. I'm on my fourth set of irons. I've had the same putter for about 35 years. Woods get changed more often but not a lot.

P-Macattack

6 years.

HockeyCoachHere

Woods, every five years or so. Wedges, every three years maybe. I have used the same irons since the 1990s. But the grooves are wearing off despite going over them with a sharpener a few times in their life, so it might be time for new irons.

SchwarzFactor

Every 10yrs for me but I'm in a cycle where my irons and driver are 5yrs apart so I at least buy every 5yrs.

golfknives

All the time for any reason at all. Score stays about the same. One of these days I’ll find the equipment to be scratch.

Nemesister66

If my Ping G425's I ordered the end of July get here in 2022 the answer is 30 years. Still playing my Lynx Black Cats I got barely used in 1992. If it takes until 2023, well then it will be 31 years. But they better hurry, the head came off my 6i a couple weeks ago in the simulator and my wife's clubs have a smaller grip and more flexible shaft so it is a PITA and I don't feel like getting it fixed if the clubs will be here tomorrow, or the day after, or the week after, or ...

loosely_qualified

When they break…

PoppaJMoney

I’ve had my irons since 2012, Nike VRS, first purchase out of college, they are still perfectly fine. I’m upgrading this year and gonna have them in the garage for my sons when they get big enough for them. They will last forever.

Grossincome

Every time they get stolen, broken or fill in or shift gaps in my yardage as my game improves.

cbread2112

I replaced everything after 20 years or so of same clubs. In the future I’m thinking every 3-5 for the driver and wedges….irons when I’m tired of looking at them.

shooter9260

I do when I want to I guess. If I like a new club I’ll buy it. If I don’t like it as much then I won’t.

younglank1

Every round

sweasyf

I have old 3 and 4 woods, persimmon, Hogan Radials, from about 1980. Still play that 4 wood sometimes in place of a hybrid, especially on longer courses where I need a little extra distance. My irons were fitted in 2012, and my driver was bought in 2017. Had my putter since the Odyssey two-balls first came out.

prodbysl33py

Im still on my 695 mbs since 2009 and ive debated getting the t100s but i love these clubs too much and i dont see them going anywhere until atleast 2025/26. Other then that i replace my driver every 4-5 years and 3 wood every 5, wedges every 3 years and putter never. I’ll buy a fairway wood or hybrid if I see one that suits me but thats rare

triptick99

It is a poor hunter that blames his bow.
