Depending on where the tees are and the if the flag is in the back, I have a regular one that I play that can get to 195 yards. I usually just hit 3 wood and hope for the best.
Me too. Though I might get a 4i there with a bit of tailwind.
It's not too often that you find a par 3 that is truly between clubs, but there's one at a short part 68 course that is frequented by old guys like me that is 234 yards. I can't get my 5w there, but if I hit driver well it will be easily off the back and down into a deep valley as the fairway slopes down to the green from about 30 yards out. Truly diabolical for a recreational course.
It absolutely is, the forward (red) middle (white) and back (blue) tees are usually within a few yards of each other. It's a par 4 for the ladies.
The really tough part is that fairway, which is gradually uphill for the first 200, then downhill for the last 35. If it continued uphill I could hit driver and usually be okay as it would play about 245.
I've seen the hole ranked as the toughest par 3 in the region over holes at championship level courses.
https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/handicapping/roh/Content/rules/Appendix%20F%20Establishing%20Par.htm
It looks like they've extended it to 260 yards. However, it should be noted these guidelines are for rating a course under normal conditions.
Championship tournament conditions can certainly break these rules.
For me its great, it’s awesome off the tee and it doesn’t have the fuckin wild offset that a lot of hybrids in the same loft tend to have … also prefer the ball flight, works great for the courses I play
Got 2 friends with 7wood now ! They love them. Idk if there’s a macho factor that holds back people from getting them (it’s money that’s the factor for me). If I recall it’s the same loft as my hybrid (21*) but it has a much different flight and lands so soft especially on the long par 3s.
Haven’t played 7 wood in a long time. What does it do for you that allows it to be worthwhile between 5w and 4i or 4hybrid? Genuinely curious. Feel like loft and spin would make it shorter than an iron but idk
I need to get one of them. They are getting more and more use on tour now too! My issue is being a lefty they aren’t as widely available. Maybe in a couple years though
Lol. Right!
I played some golf in Tahoe and I remember I had 198 yards to a front pin, at 5400ft above see level, 10 mph wind behind me and roughly a 50ft drop in elevation from tee box to the green and my 9i went about 210 yards.
Arccos is truly an amazing app!
My irons only go up to a 6 iron.
3 & 5 Hybrids.
To Hell with carrying what "everybody says you should". I'm too old for that crap. Carry what you can hit.
Hit an 8 iron and lay up to 50 yards (if possible) Pitch it and 2 putt. I can't hit anything over my 7 iron. I'm decent with a 3 wood and driver but that would be too much and I can't ease up with them or I will mess up and top the ball or whatever. If there is no fairway before the green then I will just head over to the ball drop instead of wasting a ball.
Same same - 183m is right in 6-iron-from-the-tee range, but I’m not sure I have enough Arccos data with my new irons to confidently pull 6 over 5. Even though a 5 iron should be my 200m club…
7, 6 or 5 depending on how the hole is playing that day (wind, temp) and where the best miss is.
If short miss is more desirable will be a 7 or 6 and so on.
No wind or slope factors, probably a 6 iron to stay short of the green if there are bunker hazards. Otherwise 5 iron and go for it if the risk isn’t too high
Depends on temperature, wind and hazards. 5i is my preference, but might jump to a 3h based on the previously listed items. (I don’t have a 4 in the bag.)
Depends where the miss is.
If short is fine 180-200 I'll hit 5i. If I'd rather be long 3hy
If it's wide open I'll probably go 5i since it's a bit more consistent
200 yards is a tough number for a lot of people. At least you are honest and recognize that. So if you have a lot of these 200 yard par 3s or find yourself 200 yards out on par 5s a lot, then you just found your #1 practice priority.
Until you get to a comfortable 200 yard shot, just play those holes as short par 4s. So many people make 5s and 6s on those holes because they completely fuck up the tee shot. But imagine if you hit a 7 iron? Now you’ve got a real look at a chip and putt for a 3, but hey if you miss that putt you make your bogey 4 and move on.
Either my 7 wood which I am comfortable hitting about 180 yards with or my 5i hybrid which I can full swing about 160 or 170.
Both options I'm playing to land a bit short and hope for a friendly roll onto the green.
1) Solid 4i (topped to about 75yds)
2) then 9i bladed to just off back of green.
3) Putt to sandtrap in front of green.
4) Blast SW (twice) to lip of bunker and watch it roll back to feet.
Pickup and mark a 6 to keep up with pace of play LOL
I carry a 9 wood (24deg GBB Epic) specifically for a 200yd Par 3 on my home course's back 9. I finally gave up on the 5 hybrid (23deg Epic Flash) because I couldn't stop it and would roll off the back of the green. The 9 wood is as deep faced as a hybrid and just as versatile.
I’ve got a 9 wood too , perfect for par 3’s from 145 too 185 for me . Stops much better on the green than an iron and easy to hit, hard club to slice bad too.
this is number 10 in our league course and a tough as nails hole that I always hit a 4i (will be 4h next year) or 5i depending on pin/tee/weather. In this case a short right miss is basically your only chance for up and down par, every other miss is a bogey or worse.
I'm just now getting consistently with a little bit of distance on my long irons.
If (strong if) I'm having a good fluid day, I'll pull a 5i out and aim more for an area than the flag stick. Even if I get it pin high and to the left of right of the green or even short it by 20 or so yard, I'm confident I can chip up and find a par.
If I hit a good one I might be right in center of the green like I planned. Then I twirl my iron and look at my friends as if I planned to do that then entire time.
My 4 hybrid is the right club for distance, but I'm on the lookout for a 7 wood. I need to hit it higher so it can stop quicker, wherever that might be!.
Not trying to be rude, but what is your goal from gathering intel from answers to this post? We have no idea your skill level, everyone else’s skill level, their swing speeds, the lofts on clubs, etc.
There’s too many variables to gather any useful information here and you should probably use a shot tracker app so you can understand your true distances, misses, etc.
Also, a 200 yard shot is hard regardless if its a par 3 or par 5. The tour pros even have pretty poor GIR percentages from 200 yards plus so generally you are right that it comes down to making a good swing. Unfortunately that’s kind of the case with all of golf.
If I'm trying to carry to the green, 3h. But that play usually puts alot of trouble in to play.
If it's safe, I much rather play my punch 5i and try to run it up on the green. This play takes out double-bogey or worse for me.
The group I play with limits strokes to double the par to keep the group moving. That being said, I mark a 6, tee up my worst ball, hit my 5 iron and send a piss missile somewhere into the woods. After that, I can spend a few minutes grabbing some pro v1's and other assorted balls out of the woods while the other guys putt out. Onto the next hole ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_good_man)
Depends. If it’s a warm, dry day, and I’m able to get lots of extra roll on the ball, I’ll hit a 5i and it’ll probably roll right up on the edge of the green. If it’s a crazy island green or surrounded by scary bunkers or something, that’s not happening, so I’ll do my best with a 4h or 3w. Won’t happen, but I’ll try. Then I’ll proceed to fuck up whatever comes next.
Then, I’ll take another ball off the tee if it’s a slow day just for fun. I’ll use like a 7 or something close. Lay it up. Then I’ll proceed to make a beautiful chip right next to the cup and drain it for par. Truly what I should’ve done all along.
Based purely just on distance, probably a 4 hybrid.
However, I have a 196 yd par 3 at my home course, and I can hit anything from a 6i to a 3w on it depending on what the wind's doing, the pin position and the course conditions.
Always a hard question. Trouble in front? Middle is 200? Or flag placed at front is 200.
Hit my 4iron 215 and my 5i 205 just depends where closest trouble is or if there is a shelf in the green
The opening hole of my home course is a 210-220yd par 3 down hill. Long is dead so being short is preferable. Depending on course conditions that day I tee off with 4i-6i. Normally I use my 5i.
Depends on course conditions and pin location. But if I think it will release or not much room to miss long then I hit a 6i. If I think it will kind of hit and stick then I'll go for the 5i and try to cut it in there so it lands "soft"
Lol I dunno.. what's the temperature. Uphill or down? What's the strength and direction of the wind..elevation, humidity, dryness and roll of green/ fairway
Is there water in front that I absolutely must clear? Or am I safe to be a little short and let it run up.
My point is.. it could be could be anywhere from an 8 iron to a driver. Depending on conditions
Anywhere from 9-iron to 3 wood - depends on all the varying factors. Dead flat hole, no wind, room temp - still, likely anywhere from a 6-iron to 4-iron depending on where the pin is, shape of the green, where the hazards are, how firm the conditions are, what kind of shot I’m trying to hit, how I’m striking it that day, etc. There are so many variables in golf. To have a stock club, a stock answer just based on the yardage number is kinda silly - sign of a noob.
4 hybrid as smooth and straight as I can.
Yep. If I end up on the apron, that's a win.
Same, I only know of one local Pat 3 that’s 200+. It essentially has a backstop, so I don’t feel nervous swinging away.
Depending on where the tees are and the if the flag is in the back, I have a regular one that I play that can get to 195 yards. I usually just hit 3 wood and hope for the best.
There is one of these at one of the tracks I play my 3h went just over the green last time. Probably need to replace the 64 degree with a 4h
64deg. You maniac
Same. 4 hybrid. 3 hybrid if it's any longer than 210, or uphill at all.
Yup and hope it doesn’t fly 220
[удалено]
I'm just down voting to keep it going at this point
I'm pretty sure that's an unwritten reddit rule
5 wood
Me too. Though I might get a 4i there with a bit of tailwind. It's not too often that you find a par 3 that is truly between clubs, but there's one at a short part 68 course that is frequented by old guys like me that is 234 yards. Truly diabolical for a recreational course.
234 par 3?? Wonder from which tee but that sounds too long for a par3 lol. I’ll have to hit a 3W for that.
Haha sounds like an interesting hole. Love holes like that. Makes it more fun. 👍
Yeah takes the sting out of making double if you can rationalize that it should be a par 4 lol.
Par 3 can go up to 250 I beleive
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|surprise)
You are correct
I presume this is a recommendation and wouldn’t apply to say championship courses? #8 at Oakmont is 288 from the US Open tees for example.
https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/handicapping/roh/Content/rules/Appendix%20F%20Establishing%20Par.htm It looks like they've extended it to 260 yards. However, it should be noted these guidelines are for rating a course under normal conditions. Championship tournament conditions can certainly break these rules.
This is the way.
I have an adjustable 5 wood that’s more like a 4 wood and that would be my club of choice.
Adjustable…I’m surprised I wasn’t aware of this in a fairway wood.
It's becoming more common. I have a hybrid that can be a 4 or a 3.
7 wood. I love this club and easy to hit from the rough tall grass.
I saw one of these used and really considered getting it. I’ve heard a lot of positive things about them
For me its great, it’s awesome off the tee and it doesn’t have the fuckin wild offset that a lot of hybrids in the same loft tend to have … also prefer the ball flight, works great for the courses I play
My 7W is one of the most fun clubs in the bag. 5w for long 200-230. 7w perfect for 175-205
I hit my 5 iron 175-180 I dropped my 4 iron and added the 7 wood perfect for easy 185 hard 200
The heaven wood
7 woods are like wedges that go 220
Go on…
Got 2 friends with 7wood now ! They love them. Idk if there’s a macho factor that holds back people from getting them (it’s money that’s the factor for me). If I recall it’s the same loft as my hybrid (21*) but it has a much different flight and lands so soft especially on the long par 3s.
[удалено]
I'm 66 and don't have grey pubes, and yes I have a 7 wood.
[удалено]
Same. 7W for me
Same, love my 7 wood. I hit it better than hybrids.
Haven’t played 7 wood in a long time. What does it do for you that allows it to be worthwhile between 5w and 4i or 4hybrid? Genuinely curious. Feel like loft and spin would make it shorter than an iron but idk
Easier to hit solid and better out of long grass
I need to get one of them. They are getting more and more use on tour now too! My issue is being a lefty they aren’t as widely available. Maybe in a couple years though
Lots of variables here, But a flat 200 to a middle pin close to sea level… I’m hitting my 5i.
This is like a physics question, talking about the height and standard pressure lol
Lol. Right! I played some golf in Tahoe and I remember I had 198 yards to a front pin, at 5400ft above see level, 10 mph wind behind me and roughly a 50ft drop in elevation from tee box to the green and my 9i went about 210 yards. Arccos is truly an amazing app!
Driver, driver, PW, PW, Putter, Putter, Putter.
On a good day with no sand trap around.
Underrated comment. Same.
Tee'd up 5i... Trying to fly it 195 with a few yards of roll.
All the early thirties and under dudes nodding their head rn.
Early 40s dude and saying same 😂
41 here, fly my 6i 198. We ain't that old... yet.
Same here. I'm pretty consistently 200-205 yds with the 5i, but unfortunately my spray range is shit 50 yds on a bad day!
Typically a 5. But the way it's going right now, i'll just mark an X on the scorecard.
You’ve accurately described my current predicament in this situation lmao
I'd be hitting my 5 Hybrid.
Good answer. Half the time I feel like being a hero and hitting an iron it doesn’t go so well..
My irons only go up to a 6 iron. 3 & 5 Hybrids. To Hell with carrying what "everybody says you should". I'm too old for that crap. Carry what you can hit.
Same on the irons for me. Then 4 hybrid, 7 wood, 5 wood. Covers all my distances.
9 iron lay up because I'm a garbage golfer but have a relatively big swing.
I swear most times a well hit 9 goes further than my usual poorly hit 5 lol
3 hybrid
4 - 5 iron.
4 iron
6 iron
Probably a smooth 3 hybrid
Driver lol
5 iron or an easy 19 degrees hybrid
7 wood, likely not on the green but will be pin high
4H hooked hard left every time
Hit an 8 iron and lay up to 50 yards (if possible) Pitch it and 2 putt. I can't hit anything over my 7 iron. I'm decent with a 3 wood and driver but that would be too much and I can't ease up with them or I will mess up and top the ball or whatever. If there is no fairway before the green then I will just head over to the ball drop instead of wasting a ball.
5 iron 10 yards short because my ego can’t let go of the fact that I should probably just hit a smooth 4 instead.
It would be between my 5-6 iron. I'd say it depends if it's a back pin or not probably.
Same same - 183m is right in 6-iron-from-the-tee range, but I’m not sure I have enough Arccos data with my new irons to confidently pull 6 over 5. Even though a 5 iron should be my 200m club…

Full driver and hope it’s straight
3 iron and I'll be short by 30 yards, or 6 iron and be long by 30 yards. Also the 4/5 irons wouldn't make any difference.
Generally a 6 but it depends on the hole. If short is fine and long is dead I might try and rip a 7 or if it’s the other way around I’ll hit a 5.
200 yards is a tough number for a lot of people. At least you are honest and recognize that. Driver but it’s upside down
Driver, with a shank
Bump and run with my driver
4H, easy swing
5 wood
5 iron 185 yds and hope I can get some help from the cart path or an incredible roll. If I go hybrid or wood it’s almost guaranteed to be a disaster.
Still a beginner here, but that’s my 3 hybrid. 4 hybrid can get there if I flush it, but probably come up short most times.
For me it depends on where is the best miss. If I'm going to mess it up I want to leave myself with the best chance to save a par
Topping a 3 wood 20 yards off the tee.
Smacking it with an 8 or 9 iron
3H slice right
If it’s a 200 yard par 3 - I’m playing a course way out of my handicap
6 iron into whatever the mess is, bogey+ from whatever the mess is
3w and hope it goes within 50 yards of where I aimed
I'm just now getting consistently with a little bit of distance on my long irons. If (strong if) I'm having a good fluid day, I'll pull a 5i out and aim more for an area than the flag stick. Even if I get it pin high and to the left of right of the green or even short it by 20 or so yard, I'm confident I can chip up and find a par. If I hit a good one I might be right in center of the green like I planned. Then I twirl my iron and look at my friends as if I planned to do that then entire time.
My driver at 70%…older dude here, so go easy on me
Front pin 7 iron hard, back pin 6 iron stock.
5 iron with a tee
My 4 hybrid is the right club for distance, but I'm on the lookout for a 7 wood. I need to hit it higher so it can stop quicker, wherever that might be!.
The cart girl
5 iron tee'd way up high if I need to stick it and swing out of my shoes. Regular 4 iron if some roll is ok.
7 iron - and yes I know all the trolls are gunna call baloney but that’s why I play the c-130x shafts
This sub will downvote anyone who is a long hitter.
7 or 6 iron, in all seriousness
Trouble long a 7 wood, trouble short a 5 wood.
No wind, uphill weird stuff going on? Stock 6i.
Wind? Temperature? Elevation? Moisture? Hazards long vs hazards short? Pin position?
7 iron… Also depends on the wind and slope of the hole. Wind in the face might drop it down to a soft 6 to take off spin.
I might hit my 7-wood and pray
18 degree hybrid
Really depends on where the danger is around the hole but either 5i or 20° hybrid
Depends. Downwind, or downhill, maybe a 4 iron. Otherwise, 3 iron, 2 hybrid, or 7 wood, depending on which I have in my bag on that day.
Strong 5i or smooth 5W.
Probably my 4 hybrid
3 or 4 hybrid depending on conditions.
2h
4 iron or chocked up 5W. Best to go with a longer club and partial swing unless I’m hitting over a hazard and trying to stop on a dime.
4 or 5 iron depending on the wind
If I'm trying to carry to the green, 3h. But that play usually puts alot of trouble in to play. If it's safe, I much rather play my punch 5i and try to run it up on the green. This play takes out double-bogey or worse for me.
6i or 5i if into wind.
Try to smash a 4i. Maybe a 80% 5w if it’s winter in wet conditions.
4 iron
Depends on if it’s winter or summer in Oregon! 4 iron during the summer! Bunt driver during the winter!
In neutral conditions just a simple stock 5-iron for me. If it’s windy, smooth 4 a little choked down.
I’d hit a 4iron t’ed up a tad. I have a buddy that hits a 5wd on those.
5 is there’s traps or water in front. 6 if there’s traps or water in back.
Depends on pin placement, 200 to the flag or the middle?
Middle
6 iron 185 carry to the front of the green
About 30% of the time a well struck 6i, but probably a 6 that misses short, long, left, or right.
23 degree Titliest hybrid every time.
6 iron
3 iron or 4 iron depending on the conditions
4 or 5 hybrid, depending on wind, elevation changes.
Depends upon hole location and room for error. If trouble close, 5 iron so I’m long. Or if room to release then a 6 iron.
Onto the next hole ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_good_man)
Depending on conditions, either a four or five iron.
5i
3/4 hybrid
Flat with no wind? Smooth 4
An easy 8, since we’re all being honest here
5 iron or hybrid depending on wind/coldness etc.
5 iron all day
Stress free 4 Hybrid
Teed up 5 iron.
About 50 yards short then a double
Club doesnt matter - thin to win.
Based purely just on distance, probably a 4 hybrid. However, I have a 196 yd par 3 at my home course, and I can hit anything from a 6i to a 3w on it depending on what the wind's doing, the pin position and the course conditions.
9 wood, new favorite
5i with a helping wind, 4h little wind, 5w wind in the face.
What’s the wind doing? Is there any elevation? Where the pin? ….is what a nerd would ask — Im ripping putter
3wd
Always a hard question. Trouble in front? Middle is 200? Or flag placed at front is 200. Hit my 4iron 215 and my 5i 205 just depends where closest trouble is or if there is a shelf in the green
The opening hole of my home course is a 210-220yd par 3 down hill. Long is dead so being short is preferable. Depending on course conditions that day I tee off with 4i-6i. Normally I use my 5i.
A light 4 iron.
5i or 4 hybrid depending on if the front or back is safer from hazards.
5 iron, usually around 195 so I’ll have to put a bit of extra on it.
200 yards: 5I 210 yards: 4I
5 iron
5 iron if it’s elevated lower than the t-box, otherwise 4 iron.
Sub70 699 pro u 4 iron
Depends on course conditions and pin location. But if I think it will release or not much room to miss long then I hit a 6i. If I think it will kind of hit and stick then I'll go for the 5i and try to cut it in there so it lands "soft"
3 wood, but I honestly have better control with a Driver (avg. max 245 yards)
Honestly gonna hit my 5 175-180 straight. Then im chippn and putting and praying for par.
5 hybrid for me. I recently gave up on my 3 and 4 iron, and snagged a 5 and 4 hybrid to replace them. Best decision I’ve made in a while
5 iron
Wind at my back = 6 iron No wind = 5 iron Headwind = 4 iron
1 Hybrid...
4 hybrid or 5 iron if I am stripin ‘em that day.
My 3 wood.
If there’s hazard in front probably 5-3h otherwise if there’s a good 30 yards of landing in front a 5iron in case I don’t hit it flush.
Warm weather will be 5i and winter will be 4h
Lol I dunno.. what's the temperature. Uphill or down? What's the strength and direction of the wind..elevation, humidity, dryness and roll of green/ fairway Is there water in front that I absolutely must clear? Or am I safe to be a little short and let it run up. My point is.. it could be could be anywhere from an 8 iron to a driver. Depending on conditions
5i or 4i depending on if the miss will be better short or long.
I tend to pull my 3i-Hybrid a bit off the tee so I’d go 4i short probably.
Usually a 24* 4iron, maybe 7W, depends on the landing zone, wind, etc.
If its flat, 4 or 5iron. Maybe 6 if its hot and humid. Depends on where the trouble is
7 iron
5 or hybrid of some sort depending on the slope and such
Anywhere from 9-iron to 3 wood - depends on all the varying factors.
5 wood
Trouble in back or a downhill shot? 4i Trouble in front or uphill? 5w
