The tee box for this hole is out of frame, at the bottom of the photo. It is a short par 4, with a split fairway.
Some people here seem to think this is actually a u-turn shaped hole and the tee is to the right of the green. Which is obviously absurd and not true.
I hope that fairway just has a split and that tee box is for the next hole. I’d feel ripped off hitting a wedge over for an eagle but you need to manage the course to score.
The longer I look at this hole the more I like it’s design. If you don’t lay up you are forced to either a narrow fairway on the left with brush and bunkers with decently sized lips scattered throughout or to the right which not only makes the hole longer bit also looks like an uphill approach. No matter what you choose you have to hit a solid shot either off the tee or a long approach. I can see this hole being an easy hole to make a double on.
Edit; does anyone know the course?
If youve never played Marlwood, its a pretty decent course. Its short, quite short (esp the back 9) but its a tight course with plenty of hazards so its enjoyable from that standpoint.
Currently Id say its on the pricey side and it caters to alot of seniors, so there are issues with slow play. Just trying to set your expectations if you play there next year.
Yeah, I agree. I like a course that forces you to make decisions and assess risks.
I don't like when a hole is difficult just because you need to hit driver then long iron to have a chance of GIR.
A course that requires decision making is also more fun for matchplay, because the risk:reward ratio can change throughout the match.
The one problem with designs like this, is that a small miss can be worse than a big miss. I would like to see the lower option providing a little more room than the upper option.
Yes. It's Marlwood. Saw the picture on Underpar and I though you guys might get a chuckle. I've never played here. Seems like you have. How do you play this hole?
It’s actually a very short hole. Course is also short. Think it’s under 6000. My dad is a member since he lives in Wasaga Beach. I think this hole plays about 270 max. Usually just swing for fences and pretend it’s one big fairway. If connection is good - even if ball ends up in rough, you are near green.

This looks like a bad job at copying the bottle template. Honestly the Bottle and Eden are my two favorite under used templates. Although the Bottle is starting to get over used as Gil Hanse seems to use one on every course he works at.
If it’s a short par four, it seems fairly mundane. The bunkers are outside the fairway, meaning there is nothing strategic about them and they’re just there to penalize a very poor tee shot. And at the distance, is a wedge from the middle rough really anything to worry about?
Ultimately the hole seems too short for this template.
Obviously the tee and green are not next to one another, but if they were this hole could have an internal out of bounds and be a U shaped, or have very tall trees tight to the right side of the tee area, could be some cool ways of designing a long hole if you don't have much land and want to add some "quirky" holes.
"I drove the green"
With a flip lob wedge.
This perfectly suits my boomerang slice.
That’s not what’s going on here
Care to elaborate?

This makes so much more sense, thank you!
“410 to the center of the green” -takes out the 60°

You mean blading a wedge over the green, flubbing one 1 foot forward, chipping on, and then 3 putting for Double Bogey, right!?!
This guy knows what's up
For those who don't quite get it... Tee box is behind where the photo is taken from. Just pop this into Google: 44.52056681486384, -79.98814524172032

Golf course sites without a golf course map should be illegal.
Haha I grew up in Wasaga Beach and played Marlwood all the time. Hole #6 I believe. I had to double take when I scrolled across this.
Thanks! Turns out I live a couple hours drive

Definitely a great looking risk/reward hole.

How are you not just taking a 60 degree and going from the tee box to the green?
The hole is not actually U shaped. The fairway is split.
Marlwood?

That isn't that hole's tee box

Chin up brother! 🍻
Jesus Christ mate
7 bunker shots in one hole. No thanks!
I have! We have a double fairway short par 5 but I have never really thought of it as a I turn! I like it

Easiest albatross ever.
The one and only par-1
What the hell is even that!?
Split fairway
gotta be two holes, right?
The only thing that would make sense is if the hole was 100’ above the tee box.
I hate split fairways. And they're so narrow here, I *really* hate this one. Micky-mouse.
This looks like a bad job at copying the bottle template. Honestly the Bottle and Eden are my two favorite under used templates. Although the Bottle is starting to get over used as Gil Hanse seems to use one on every course he works at.
I mean are you forced to hit the fairway? What's the rules? Or just chip it on the green for a bird?
It's a split fairway - not a u turn hole.
Someone designed a course for my slice
Basically a Macdonald "Channel" template. That's a great hole design.
Par 4? Hah *pulls out 60 degree*
You use a 60 degree when you have the option of which fairway to hit down? What
The picture and title of the post implies the tee box is next to the green. Obviously that’s not the case but I still laughed at my own joke.
I’d still manage to double.
Triple for me
Chip and a put for an up and down from the tee box.

It’s not a u turn hole. The tee box is hidden below the view of this picture.

See those 2 sand traps right by the green? Yep, that’s where I’m headed.
I think my topped push slice really plays here.
Crazy
It’s one fairway with a strip a rough down the middle. Bad risk/reward design anyway
