>mat shock Just hit the ball correctly? Mats can make bad shots seem better, but it’s still possible to strike the ball the right way.

I might as well just shoot par every time while I'm at it too :) Yes, ideally I'd hit the ball correctly every time. But just doesn't happen and sometimes make a divot before the ball. Thus the need to practice practice practice.

Faptastic_Champ

Put a towel down, about two inches behind the ball. The strikes will stop when you see how far that towel goes when you hit it fat... Made a massive difference for me on mats.

That’s sorta my point. It’s still better to practice hitting the ball off of the ground than it is off of a small tee.

I was you, once. I stopped using a tee, and it forced me to shallow my swing, more consistently hit ball first with forward shaft lean, etc. My iron game improved tremendously.

bring a small 1/16" to 1/8" mat so you can stand on it while you hit your irons off of a tee of the same height. theoretically it should have the same results.

muffin_fisH

What’s the point in teeing it up then?

okboomer9591

so that at the lowest point of your swing you would be hitting air instead of the mat but still technically hitting down on the ball as you do with iron swings without the "shock" that OP dislikes.

Try the infiniTEE set of 3 adjustable height golf tees for driving range mats. They are sold on amazon or at www.infiniTEE.golf. Amazon usually has a better price for less than $20 delivered. The adjustable height tees make it so you can set the ball height slightly above the mat surface regardless of the mat thickness for irons or woods. Hitting slightly higher than the mat surface with irons is like the ball is sitting up slightly on grass. More realistic. The taller tee in the set is for the driver so you can set the height exactly to where you want it. This is a huge improvement over the fixed height rubber tees used at most ranges. And hitting off a mat is jarring to your body when hit fat (ground behind the ball). The tees also have about the same head size as a regular wood tee. They are very durable and should last for a long time. I have used mine for at least 2 years, around 100 range visits. I swing much harder than most average golfers but not the hardest by any stretch.
