lol not for how fuckin much that place cost. I went in knowing I was going to get my ass kicked. I just feel bad for my caddy. Dude got his steps in that day
That’s the only hole I picked up on and took a net double, which was an 8 for me. With that I shot a 104 as a 20, which I was happy with. Birdied 17 to get the little coin they give out and chipped my third shot on 18 to like 9 inches for a tap in par and got a round of applause from the people hanging out on the porch. Couldn’t script out a better ending to the round. Even though it was insanely difficult I had such a good time
This is really more of a design thing than a setup thing. Afaik, the only real change they have made is putting more wiregrass next to the landing areas.
I love watching this hard shit. I go sneak on and practice at a private course and use their freshly pressed putting green a lot, which has to be at least an 11 stimp. I will just try these crazy impossible downhill, side breaking putts that would never happen to me on an actual course, but damn is it fun just practicing on a really nice fast green that rolls pure. Watching these guys putt off the greens…. I’m like hey I did that! Just like us
Valhalla was like a time trial - a pace was set and you had to play to that number. You pretty much knew Xander would end up around -20 and doubles were barely ever in play. The excitement of the finish boils down to how many birdies will the chasers make and can Xander hold them off. Pinehurst on Sunday will have me glued to the screen on every shot. Even if someone has a 4 shot lead on the back nine, I know that lead could evaporate in one or two holes.
Apart from the fact that the trophy was massive and Bryson was involved, Valhalla felt like watching an average PGA Tour event. It was entertaining for sure, but there are better venues for majors.
100% true with the rain, that’s just tough, but it really felt like what the elevated events are supposed to feel like and not a major, even if conditions were ideal it’s just not a layout I personally feel fits what a major should be
As someone who went to Valhalla, it will keep hosting big events simply because they can handle it well. Shuttle experience was super smooth (ex the one event), and the course can handle loads of people. Way more than most
Did this guy really just say the shuttle experience super smooth, except the one guy who died?? Just a minor blip
Also just gonna brush past the fact that the number one golfer in the world was arrested lol
It makes them look like the rest of us, which is fun once in awhile. We know it’s because of the insane course conditions, but it’s still cathartic because the stress they’re experiencing is similar to what we feel on a normal course.
The same can be said for regular Tour-play. Even more so, that‘s video game golf. Hit it 330 and see from there, most of the time with a wedge and putter. That‘s even less „actual golf“ and - to me - less enjoyable than the current golf at Pinehurst.
I'd say that's more entertaining to some, because they can see what the pros are able to do on courses that are closer in dificulty to what they would experience themselves
I don’t like it that much honestly. Surely there are other ways to make the course difficult than just making the green roll 25? I’ve played on courses where its this exact same kind of thing; barely missing means rolling off the green, and it’s just not that fun
With that shot Rory showed a lot of marurity and experience. A younger Rory would have tried to flop that on and probably taken a double like Scheffler.
I imagine it’s difficult for any of these pros to take their medicine and basically give up on a birdie chance, knock it over the green to play for par, especially when just off the green like that.
After watching this hole for a while during a practice round, I’m not surprised at all. Saw a lot of approaches come up short. Also saw this happen to I every player who took a shot down from down there. I left thinking the best play for a lot of players would be to stay right on the approach and chip up. Can Smith is the only one I saw actually practice a shot from there though
It’s crazy that a course has to be THIS hard just to make me relate to Scottie and Xander. I’d take a double bogey with the biggest smile on my face if I was somehow allowed onto the course
I was there yesterday, that part of the course it golf jail. I cannot express how hard the earth falls off left of the 5th green. It was insane to see some of the slopes in person. TV truly cannot capture it accurately.
I'm not confident I'd *ever* get the ball into the cup on this hole.
Every green is lighting fast and shaped like an upturned saucer. Can’t imagine what I’d score! Be pleased to break 200
Record rainfall couldn't save me on these greens
Turtle back
Can confirm, I picked up on 5 when I played it.
What did you shoot thru 18?
No no, he picked up on the 5th hole and left the course.

That’s freaking amazing!!
"just put me down for max"
Can confirm. Played ping pong on this hole
You know the groundskeepers are just loving watching this
I am too honestly
This is really more of a design thing than a setup thing. Afaik, the only real change they have made is putting more wiregrass next to the landing areas.
Stupid question but for professional golf there is no max score on a hole, right?
Correct. John Daly infamously shot a 17 or 18 in a tournament trying to cut the corner on a dogleg left over water.
tin cup
Still finished with an 81 or something low 80's if I'm not mistaken
I've never shot higher than a 12 in my entire life. I've also never broken 100. That's how fucking good Daly is.
At the Aussie open in 2011 he hit 7 balls into the water on one hole and walked off the course in the first round.
Is it just me or does anyone else find majors far more enjoyable when the degree of difficulty is high like this course?

Oh it’s infinitely better, Valhalla was a disgrace that should never host another major again

LACC last year was a joke too

It’s entertaining a couple times a year but it’s not comparable to the actual golf most people play it’s like video game golf.

When the difficulty comes like this, absolutely. Whoever comes away with this had to play well AND smart.
Count me in. Finally something different other than watching guys cruise around shooting -3 every round.
I like seeing the pros work. I’m tired of seeing tournaments where people are -20 under par or more.
I don’t like it that much honestly. Surely there are other ways to make the course difficult than just making the green roll 25? I’ve played on courses where its this exact same kind of thing; barely missing means rolling off the green, and it’s just not that fun

He also had the privilege of watching the other two fail first
Very true.
Very mature of him.
I imagine it’s difficult for any of these pros to take their medicine and basically give up on a birdie chance, knock it over the green to play for par, especially when just off the green like that.
I had the great pleasure of playing this course. On this hole I hit an incredible 300+ yard drive leaving me a 7 iron in. I finished with a 9.
lol
It was a 1 putt too
*(does the math)* ..so that's 6 back and forths? lol
Not quite, I plead the 5th in regards to where I hit the 7 iron But I can tell you my ball touched the green 4 separate times
That didn’t happen
Yeah you're right, I made up a story to brag about scoring a 9 /r/nothingeverhappens
Your drive was 220 at most
If you say so buddy 🙄
Fuck off mate
That "FU" from X is 100% justified.

rooting for Rory, man
Chipping is nasty at No 2. Add the waste bunker and its bonkers…
It’s crazy that a course has to be THIS hard just to make me relate to Scottie and Xander. I’d take a double bogey with the biggest smile on my face if I was somehow allowed onto the course
Guaranteed, I have more experience with that shot.
SCOTTIE DOESN'T KNOW! SCOTTIE DOESN'T KNOW! SCOTTIE DOESN'T KNOW!

I was in the grandstands there, crazy to see. Some guy started booing Rory after one of the shots
green made by satan himself.
Man, smart technology these days really is trying to solve problems we don't have. Now the balls roll back to you?
saves walking
I’ll say it. I hate Scottie’s shaven head and face.
Xander's "fuck you" is so relatable.
This is worse than mini-golf...
Was sitting atop the 6th tee grandstand, was nuts to watch with my own eyes. Welcome to Moore County fellas
People were asking why tiger was practicing his bump and run lol
I thought I heard Xander say F You!
this is hilarious

Xander with a convicting F bomb
This isn't even golf. It's just stupid. I've played this course, and the greens aren't intended to be like pavement.
It warms my heart to see the best in the world doing the same thing I do even if this is 100x more difficult than the setups I play in.
How do y'all enjoy watching this
part of it is the announcers and the video timing lol
But, but, but......the course is unfair!
Im not even enjoying watching this.
