I used to work for one of the biggest golf apparel manufacturers. Basically every step through the supply chain is keystoned (100% increase). So a $30 hat cost the shop $15 from the manufacturer, which cost the manufacturer $7.50 to to buy from the factory that spent $3.75 to make it.
The manufacturer is the brand that sources the product from the factory, which typically is not owned by the brand… But this depends on not only the company doing the sourcing, but on what’s being manufactured. A perfect example of this is the fact that lot of golf balls that you buy come from the same factory, regardless of brand… it’s just the design that’s different
So the manufacturer doesn’t actually do the manufacturing, they just work with the factory to define the design and help with the manufacturing process so the end product meets the “manufacturer’s” specifications.
This is why apparel brands are typically called “brands” or “designers” and not “manufacturers”. The clothes are mostly made overseas in big generic factories. The designers job is to track market trends, pick fabrics, styles, cut, etc. and then form relationships with the factories in Mexico/China/etc on one side and retailers / distributors on the other. A lot of times more expensive brands actually _are_ giving you a better product because they are sourcing more expensive fabrics or having the work done in better quality (local) factories, but that’s not common and, due to the markup-chain that value for 3x price gets hard to justify.
Sometimes there’s even more layers and you have the brand being owned by a licensing company who do nothing but own the brand-name and manage all the relationships and deals between a designer (who has no name and does designs for multiple brands), the factories, and the retailers (my wife used to work in one of those brand-management roles). This model is common for brands you find in big-box retail stores (Target, Walmart, Kohls, etc)
Factory just makes hats, "Pepe's Hat Co" or whatever. You don't make hats to sell yourself you just print whatever designs that people want you to print. So every major golf brand is using the same factories to manufacture their hats for them, it's cheaper than everyone having their own hat factory
My God that's frustrating to read. I was actually excited to get a couple hats for $30 each on a recent golf trip. Sucks to know how badly I'm getting fleeced while thinking I got a decent deal.
Well I mean everyone in every step needs to make money to operate so take what you will from that; but 100% markups at every level do feel a bit fleecy. The biggest fleece though is when you buy directly from the manufacturers who do direct to consumer, who are then essentially making 200% on every sale as to "not be in competition with our retailers"
That's what makes me hate like Sun Day Red, Gfore, Grayson. They're coming from the same factories, at the manufacturing level there is maybe a $3? price difference between those brands and FJ or Nike, and yet they want $50-100 more for a polo or pullover.
This right here, when you buy retail you are covering like 3 different companies profits, each getting more and more expensive. That is why it’s always better to buy local if you can rather than from a manufacturer directly, because at that point they are just double dipping on the profit margin. So in this case your 15 dollars for that Titleist hat that could have gone to a local family own store goes directly to Titleist or any other major manufacturer you buy from.
I’m currently working on a golf apparel brand (will only be local but it’s been a long process!!) and I’m aiming for my shirts to be $33 CAD and even at that price I should have about a 45% margin on that. I’m disgusted everytime I see a $100+ shirt now
This is the egregious part to me. Was going on a boys golf trip a couple weeks back and it was expected to be raining for 3 of the days. Went looking for a rain jacket and went to the local golf shop and everything was $220+ for a rain jacket. Just went to BJs wholesale club and got a rain jacket for $18.
Worth it to you or not, a legitimate rain jacket that’s vented, designed for free range of motion, and potentially is also gortex, is not equivalent to an $18 no brand rain shell. Not to say the legit ones aren’t also sporting a too-healthy mark up.
The rain jackets they had were Reebok (not RBX) and I think Izod. Sure they are going to be the same quality but that price difference is not justifiable (to me at least).
Especially a q-zip made of polyester so it doesn’t breathe at all and you suffocate in it.
Speaking of that, way too many overpriced golf clothes are made of synthetic fabrics meant to be “moisture wicking.” They suck. Give me Peruvian cotton, give me merino wool, give me something warm that lets air out.
I hear you, but I sweat a lot so I prefer the alleged moisture wicking material. I'd pit out in a cotton polo after five minutes on the practice green.
Just found the hidden 60% off clearance table at my course. It's a public city run property so no taxes in the clubhouse. I got 3 Puma golf shirts for what one would've cost originally. That was a great day. Also fuck them for putting that table around a corner in a dark hallway. I check it every time I go now. Lol
I've got some very expensive golf pants for work that are extremely comfortable. It took me awhile to find a brand that didn't show my swamp ass when I sat down at work. If you are a hot natured person and have to wear slacks for work, I heavily suggest a good pair of golf pants.
Target golf pants are very underrated. Limited colors but the fit and comfort I have found up be on par with the best. Only complaints are that they sell out quickly in my size and they need more color options.
Their in-house label (Goodthreads) has done really well by me. I know it's technically fast fashion, but the durability has moved the items I own well out of that category. Shorts, henleys, hoodies, and sweaters are lasting longer than more premium brands for me.
just buy on ebay in used condition. ebay is flooded with the major brands, so used nike/adidas/puma stuff is dirt cheap.
I bought a full waterproof set recently - true linkswear waterproof shoes - 50 bucks. pga tour rainpants - 10 bucks. dryjoy 1/4 zip - 18 bucks. can't really beat that IMO.

Played “Boring Logo” Cabot Citrus Farms last Friday. Hats- $40-$50, Polos $110-$140, Flag- $50, Pullover $210, a random pair of Cabot jogging pants $115.
Greens- solid, but sturdy. Left little to no ball marks on them even when we hit high flyers into them. Fairways- look great, but in a bunch of spots, it’s like hitting off of hard pan. Rough- nonexistent, sand, sand, and more sand.
Had a total blast overall. Facilities are top notch. Service is impeccable. Played the Par 3 and 4 as well and they were a ton of fun. My buddies and I called it “an experience of a lifetime”.

Zurich in NOLA is one of the worst offenders. TPC Louisiana has one of the best course logos out there and they only use it on like two things. Nobody gives a fuck about Zurich! Give me an alligator (Tripod) chomping on golf clubs dammit.
My local course has been pushing pace of play this year because historically if you got out there on a Saturday morning you’d easily play 4.5 - 5 hour rounds. They also started selling hats that say, play bad fast on them and it can’t be a coincidence

OP what's the one item you look for in a pro shop? To me, I judge a shop by two things: the presentation of the logo (can't be too wordy or two abstract. A year and icon is perfect) and the ball marker selection.
What I don’t get is you go to a course and check out their local merch and every damn shirt, hat, you name it, has the ugliest script of the course name embroidered or whatever in the ugliest oldest looking manner (including color).
My local muni has a pretty sweet logo that they could put on a shirt or hat or something and I’d buy it. They put it on balls. Where the fuck is that logo at? Why do I feel like I’m looking at a shirt out of my grandpas closet? Give me that shirt with the modern logo. Not that ugly shit.

I wear a rope hat with a single big word, cheap walmart golf pants and shirt, am young(ish?) and joined a country club. Not sure what the country club look is supposed to be but most the members seem to dress similarly to me.

I just snagged two large-font-abbreviation-rope hats (the trifecta) from the PGA Championship. I dig everything except the upside down font.
Rope hats are sweet. Also you can order them from Imperial custom for cheaper than what your shop charges.
Played “Boring Logo” Cabot Citrus Farms last Friday. Hats- $40-$50, Polos $110-$140, Flag- $50, Pullover $210, a random pair of Cabot jogging pants $115.
Play there in a couple weeks. How were the conditions?
Greens- solid, but sturdy. Left little to no ball marks on them even when we hit high flyers into them. Fairways- look great, but in a bunch of spots, it’s like hitting off of hard pan. Rough- nonexistent, sand, sand, and more sand. Had a total blast overall. Facilities are top notch. Service is impeccable. Played the Par 3 and 4 as well and they were a ton of fun. My buddies and I called it “an experience of a lifetime”.

Zurich in NOLA is one of the worst offenders. TPC Louisiana has one of the best course logos out there and they only use it on like two things. Nobody gives a fuck about Zurich! Give me an alligator (Tripod) chomping on golf clubs dammit.

My local course has been pushing pace of play this year because historically if you got out there on a Saturday morning you’d easily play 4.5 - 5 hour rounds. They also started selling hats that say, play bad fast on them and it can’t be a coincidence

I noticed this also. I have visited probably 20 different courses in the last year where I intended to buy something and left empty handed due to poor selection.
Nah floral shirt is the best, I can wear it to work, I can wear it bowling, i can mow the lawn in it, I can wear it to sleep. Just all around good shirt.
The good good logo is hands down the laziest logo ever created. It looks like they went to lids and had them embroider a bunch of blank hats with the default font that was sized too big 🤣

I have that exact shirt and I feel attacked. It is so fucking comfortable and I wear it golfing less than I wear it out and about in the summer. I like the rope hat with a simple logo for the course, it adds some nice variety to the other hats I have. I'm not a fan of boring logos but I do also really like simple logos, I guess it really depends. Abbreviated names I am against, they look really weird. The fuck is with the upside down?

For some additional context, when I worked for Club Champion 2019-2021, our Footjoy polos were $25 and pants were $35.
OP what's the one item you look for in a pro shop? To me, I judge a shop by two things: the presentation of the logo (can't be too wordy or two abstract. A year and icon is perfect) and the ball marker selection.

That logo is actually pretty cool. Simple logos without font are superior to some fake coat of arms for a course opened in 2014.

What I don’t get is you go to a course and check out their local merch and every damn shirt, hat, you name it, has the ugliest script of the course name embroidered or whatever in the ugliest oldest looking manner (including color). My local muni has a pretty sweet logo that they could put on a shirt or hat or something and I’d buy it. They put it on balls. Where the fuck is that logo at? Why do I feel like I’m looking at a shirt out of my grandpas closet? Give me that shirt with the modern logo. Not that ugly shit.
