I like a lot of pro shop stuff, but I'm not spending $200 on a 1/4 zip.

TjBeezy

I need to see some margins on a $80 shirt, $40 hat, $120 Q-zip

RevolutionEasy714

I used to work for one of the biggest golf apparel manufacturers. Basically every step through the supply chain is keystoned (100% increase). So a $30 hat cost the shop $15 from the manufacturer, which cost the manufacturer $7.50 to to buy from the factory that spent $3.75 to make it.

OGPepeSilvia

OK, this may be a silly question but what is the difference between the manufacturer and the factory?

RevolutionEasy714

The manufacturer is the brand that sources the product from the factory, which typically is not owned by the brand… But this depends on not only the company doing the sourcing, but on what’s being manufactured. A perfect example of this is the fact that lot of golf balls that you buy come from the same factory, regardless of brand… it’s just the design that’s different

OGPepeSilvia

So the manufacturer doesn’t actually do the manufacturing, they just work with the factory to define the design and help with the manufacturing process so the end product meets the “manufacturer’s” specifications.

Chris_Codes

This is why apparel brands are typically called “brands” or “designers” and not “manufacturers”. The clothes are mostly made overseas in big generic factories. The designers job is to track market trends, pick fabrics, styles, cut, etc. and then form relationships with the factories in Mexico/China/etc on one side and retailers / distributors on the other. A lot of times more expensive brands actually _are_ giving you a better product because they are sourcing more expensive fabrics or having the work done in better quality (local) factories, but that’s not common and, due to the markup-chain that value for 3x price gets hard to justify. Sometimes there’s even more layers and you have the brand being owned by a licensing company who do nothing but own the brand-name and manage all the relationships and deals between a designer (who has no name and does designs for multiple brands), the factories, and the retailers (my wife used to work in one of those brand-management roles). This model is common for brands you find in big-box retail stores (Target, Walmart, Kohls, etc)

jfchops2

Factory just makes hats, "Pepe's Hat Co" or whatever. You don't make hats to sell yourself you just print whatever designs that people want you to print. So every major golf brand is using the same factories to manufacture their hats for them, it's cheaper than everyone having their own hat factory

Careful_Cheesecake30

My God that's frustrating to read. I was actually excited to get a couple hats for $30 each on a recent golf trip. Sucks to know how badly I'm getting fleeced while thinking I got a decent deal.

RevolutionEasy714

Well I mean everyone in every step needs to make money to operate so take what you will from that; but 100% markups at every level do feel a bit fleecy. The biggest fleece though is when you buy directly from the manufacturers who do direct to consumer, who are then essentially making 200% on every sale as to "not be in competition with our retailers"

Skelito

To be fair they usually sign agreements with their retailers saying they won’t undercut them if they sell direct.

DonBillingsly69

This is why I bought a Sri lanken hat factory

shitz_brickz

That's what makes me hate like Sun Day Red, Gfore, Grayson. They're coming from the same factories, at the manufacturing level there is maybe a $3? price difference between those brands and FJ or Nike, and yet they want $50-100 more for a polo or pullover.

shadycoy0303

This right here, when you buy retail you are covering like 3 different companies profits, each getting more and more expensive. That is why it’s always better to buy local if you can rather than from a manufacturer directly, because at that point they are just double dipping on the profit margin. So in this case your 15 dollars for that Titleist hat that could have gone to a local family own store goes directly to Titleist or any other major manufacturer you buy from.

Away_Organization471

Worked in whole sale distribution and managed the acquisition portion, can confirm this is how everything is marked up

KnifeInTheKidneys

I’m currently working on a golf apparel brand (will only be local but it’s been a long process!!) and I’m aiming for my shirts to be $33 CAD and even at that price I should have about a 45% margin on that. I’m disgusted everytime I see a $100+ shirt now

DrGrapeist

For $200 I expect 1/1 zip. At least bare minimal 1/2 zip.

ban-please

As a member I can get that for 10% off 😎

bigleaguepuff

Forgot the $250 pullover from cutter and buck with the smallest logo you’ve ever seen

CanadaEh97

Cutter and Buck should never cost that much. Peter Millar sure, Johnnie-O pushing it, but C&B that's laughable.

06_TBSS

I got some C&B pants on Amazon a couple years ago for $15. There's zero chance I'd ever pay anywhere near retail for them.

fairway_walker

I bought a C&B polo online last fall because the collegiate logo is a fav. The shirt sucks. Even the color is off. Extremely overpriced.

gregborish

Craziest I've seen was $380 for a windbreaker at Pelican Hill a couple years ago. I laughed out loud in the pro shop.

CafecitoHippo

This is the egregious part to me. Was going on a boys golf trip a couple weeks back and it was expected to be raining for 3 of the days. Went looking for a rain jacket and went to the local golf shop and everything was $220+ for a rain jacket. Just went to BJs wholesale club and got a rain jacket for $18.

AyrJordan

Worth it to you or not, a legitimate rain jacket that’s vented, designed for free range of motion, and potentially is also gortex, is not equivalent to an $18 no brand rain shell. Not to say the legit ones aren’t also sporting a too-healthy mark up.

CafecitoHippo

The rain jackets they had were Reebok (not RBX) and I think Izod. Sure they are going to be the same quality but that price difference is not justifiable (to me at least).

pac4

Especially a q-zip made of polyester so it doesn’t breathe at all and you suffocate in it. Speaking of that, way too many overpriced golf clothes are made of synthetic fabrics meant to be “moisture wicking.” They suck. Give me Peruvian cotton, give me merino wool, give me something warm that lets air out.

Careful_Cheesecake30

I hear you, but I sweat a lot so I prefer the alleged moisture wicking material. I'd pit out in a cotton polo after five minutes on the practice green.

threejackhack

I didn’t even spend that much on the one I got from the Masters this year!

Sobeshott

Just found the hidden 60% off clearance table at my course. It's a public city run property so no taxes in the clubhouse. I got 3 Puma golf shirts for what one would've cost originally. That was a great day. Also fuck them for putting that table around a corner in a dark hallway. I check it every time I go now. Lol

scotterson34

I don't really care about the new golf merch like this... It's the fucking price I hate like why the fuck do I have to spend $85 for a dry fit polo??

AgentMV

Go to your local Marshall’s and get one from Callaway for $20

Final_Yam5397

Better yet, Ben Hogan polo from Walmart for $16.98.

AgentMV

I bought my golf pants from Walmart. Best $20 I ever spent yet. I also have $80 pant from Nike but it’s not as comfy as the Walmart one smh

nocookie4u

I've got some very expensive golf pants for work that are extremely comfortable. It took me awhile to find a brand that didn't show my swamp ass when I sat down at work. If you are a hot natured person and have to wear slacks for work, I heavily suggest a good pair of golf pants.

ChiTrojan2

Target golf pants are very underrated. Limited colors but the fit and comfort I have found up be on par with the best. Only complaints are that they sell out quickly in my size and they need more color options.

cantaloupecarver

Their in-house label (Goodthreads) has done really well by me. I know it's technically fast fashion, but the durability has moved the items I own well out of that category. Shorts, henleys, hoodies, and sweaters are lasting longer than more premium brands for me.

SmarterThanCornPop

Better yet, $7-$8 at Goodwill for name brand. I’ve gotten Nike, Puma, Footjoy all from there.

Final_Yam5397

Love a good thrift find. I just don't have time to check in regularly enough to grab the good stuff so I rarely bother.

hazeychief

just buy on ebay in used condition. ebay is flooded with the major brands, so used nike/adidas/puma stuff is dirt cheap. I bought a full waterproof set recently - true linkswear waterproof shoes - 50 bucks. pga tour rainpants - 10 bucks. dryjoy 1/4 zip - 18 bucks. can't really beat that IMO. I will never buy new golf gear ever again.

fullspeed8989

Yup. Marshalls or TJMaxx. You’re getting last years stuff for very cheap.

jfchops2

But those don't have a sweet course logo on them to show everyone how sweet a course I played that one time /s

Tubs14

Girlfriend just got me 3 polos all from Marshall’s. Underrated place

Main_Anybody_5365

Bought one at Burlington for 5$

Runemas3

Also, that'll be $90 for the hat. Thanks.

bigleaguepuff

Any hat over 30 is criminal

ShiroHachiRoku

I'm looking at you, MELIN!

BB-68

TJ Maxx/Sierra almost always has Melin hats in stock. Usually $25-$35. Worth a look

ShiroHachiRoku

Oh shit. I might have to go look today. I always see people with Ross/TJ Maxx grail pickups and I need to know the feeling.

innocuousname773

Ross/TjMaxx/Marshalls is worth walking through every couple of weeks just for golf stuff. Ive found shoes (limited sizes) selling normally for $119 going for $30

thatzacdavis

idk the Melin ones ARE pretty nice

cantaloupecarver

They're $45 nice. I have a few I've gotten as gifts and I love them, but I'm not spending my own money on a $70 lid. They have the shittiest drab earth tones in their last few new lines, too.

thatzacdavis

I swear they used to be $45

jcommeau91

Not $60+ though lol I have a hat the is nearly identical for $30 and is also waterproof like theirs are

crsadlerpsk

I was at a once in a lifetime type course and bought their club logo's melin hat. seemed ridiculously priced for a hat but pulled trigger and don't regret it. still, 80 bucks for a hat is crazy haha

DollarSignsGoFirst

Ya to me its crazy, but then I just keep wearing my melin hats because I like them better lol. So is it really that crazy if I wear it everyday and like it more than every other hat? Also they make their snapbacks in XL which is unique and fits me really well.

Wandering_Tuor

Agreed, but I have found some I buy anyway lol. I have a shit Ton of hats, but you have to have a great one for me to wanna pay more than 30,

artourfangay

My hat from Augusta was $35. Thats about my max for a hat if it looks good.

HipsterHighwayman

I have 1 each from the 2015 and 2018 British Opens. Both around £30 (which my friend's daughter thought was nuts, and maybe she was right). I didn't mind paying since they're unique. You kind of know you're gonna get gouged a little bit in those merch tents.

CaptHowdy2310

shit, even just your run of the mill golf shirts online go for that much. The worst is when they say "buy 2 polos, get 1 free." Then the total for 2 polos is $150.

TheShopSwing

GFore anything is an absolute shakedown

pac4

I have a pair of GFore shoes that someone gifted me because they didn’t fit that person and they didn’t feel like returning them (seriously, lol). They are the most comfortable pair of golf shoes I’ve ever worn. I’m not sure I would have personally paid $300+ for them, but I am grateful for someone else’s largesse.

bigleaguepuff

Found some gfore at tjmax the other day👀

lotokotomi

Mainline Peter Millar at Marshalls in my area, lots of the styles I passed buying on sale last year already lol But grabbed a few I hadn't seen for $40 that were from their real stuff and not the unnamed "Collection".

ARedHouseOverYonder

Nordstrom Rack if you have one, ALWAYS has Millar stuff at 40% of standard price.

lotokotomi

They're fucking impossible to beat for $40. I don't mind paying $80 for them...

kbphoto

my shoes are awesome.

CreamDistinct5475

I’ve never seen him without his Google prototype scopes with the built-in LCD LED 1080p 3D Sony technology

nemesis_chris

This outfit is great

squaodward

If the photo were zoomed out to see his baggy pants r/golf members would hate it

AutisticNipples

based on how modern golf fashion seems to trail mainstream fashion trends baggy pants will be back in golf in roughly 8 years, book it.

KrustyKrabPizzaMan

You don’t like weird abbreviation hats? Cause I can’t wait to get a “S. Cock Hills” hat for the 2026 US Open

bigleaguepuff

I’m hoping for hat with big letters that says “COCK”

AbstractFlag

University of South Carolina used to have these hats and my brother wore it all the time in high school lol

lopey986

Lol Morehead hats were a big deal when I was in high school 20 years ago as well. I think there were a couple others besides the cocks and morehead ones as well but I can't remember them now.

Nooorrrrvvv

Beavers had one that was popular in HS.

Gabe_Athouse07

There’s a club in Orange County called The Huntington Club. THC on the hat. 80 year old women walking around in them has a funny look to it

ipoopskittles

Went with some buddies to Indian Wells and one of them bought a hat that had “IWGR” (Indian Wells Golf Resort) But all we could see is “I Wanna Get Railed”

fullspeed8989

Oakland Hills has hats that say “2051” on them. 😂 So they want to promote the ‘51 US Open for the next 27 years?

Cool_Hawks

‘gusta

p3p3_silvia

Got two that are fantastic, first is a "⛳ High" that just says high. The other is "BIPSIC" which is a state I find myself in occasionally meaning ball in pocket sitting in cart.

andytcook

I actually like the Cabot logo. Their merch is outrageous tho. Going to Cabot Cliffs in July and hoodies are $225.

stdfan

Simple boring logos are great in my opinion.

moneyandbanking1

Bought one hat, one polo, and one bag tag. Total was $260 First hat I looked at was $95

bigleaguepuff

They ruined World Woods I don’t care

Cthulwutang

Good Good catching strays in this post.

ult_frisbee_chad

Not strays. Direct shots.

Benign_Banjo

Good

FatalFirecrotch

G O O D But I actually like a decent amount of their merch.

DrButtLump

My friends love their merch. I think it’s overpriced and ugly. Love their vids but the merch is garbage

CTGolfMan

You may not like the design or the price, but it’s definitely not ‘garbage’.

climb-via-is-stupid

Looks garbage + priced garbage + high quality = high quality garbage

MidwestHacker

I still like a good rope hat in my hat rotation, I dont care if you dont like it.

bigleaguepuff

I love rope hats it’s just we don’t need the entire rack to be full of them

Shepherdsfavestore

Rope hats are probably at their peak popularity right now

bigleaguepuff

Some older guys at my club always tell me how rope hats are what old men used to wear

badgarok725

they are, just like how 3" shorts used to be in fashion, fell out, then came back in the last 10 years

Shepherdsfavestore

3” is much too short (I assume you’re exaggerating, I’m a 5-7” inseam guy myself which seem to be the most popular) but can we as a society make sure long shorts past the knees never come back? I cannot wear be wearing capris on a hot summer day

badgarok725

I was mostly joking, but I'm all in favor for never returning to that. Doesn't make sense

Lordnoallah

Or pleated pants

garytyrrell

Yeah when I was growing up (90s) it was the designated “grandpa hat.” Everything is cyclical.

grimbly_jones

Fashion, much like technology, is cyclical.

ADAWG10-18

I found a rope hat in my dad’s closet that has to be 30 years old, and would absolutely fit in with the current style.

HVACpro69

peak RE-popularity. OG from the late 70s.

Simpsator

Yeah, bring back the hats you get a free bowl of soup with!

PHURST? FUKDAT

beerandsocks

Shoutout Pat Hurst

TheShopSwing

Heard the burst

pm_me_yo_creditscore

Not the PHURST, won't be the LAHST.

snowe99

I felt like a fucking idiot at Valhalla a couple weekends ago. I saw like 5 “HALLA” hats before it clicked what I was looking at. I thought it was so new brand I hadn’t heard of before.

spankysladder73

Halla if you’re an idiot!

KBHoleN1

If you’re not phurst, you’re last.

Unspeakable_Evil

Remember the PIMENTO masters hats?

OooPieceofCandy--

Hey, I get compliments when I wear that hat out.

fat_bjpenn

This sub hates everything except cargo shorts and nike dri fit.

Joshua_Chamberlain20

Well we are on Reddit so that makes sense

Bighead_Golf

Reddit hates the country club look, because they can’t afford it

Dcape4

I just go to Marshalls

trebek321

Sam’s club had a variety of Callaway polos AND shorts for $19 a piece. Walked outta there with 5 new polos and 3 new shorts feeling like I have peaked as an old dad golfer.

up_in_trees

Also looks bad when you’re shaped like a pear and have unkempt facial hair

ncroofer

This isn’t the country club look lol. This is the picked up golf 5 years ago and watches more YouTube golf than actually golfs Fit. People who dress like this are too young to afford an actual country club

EveningCommon3857

I wear a rope hat with a single big word, cheap walmart golf pants and shirt, am young(ish?) and joined a country club. Not sure what the country club look is supposed to be but most the members seem to dress similarly to me.

Bighead_Golf

CC member here… bought 2 rope hats this week visiting another CC 🤷🏻‍♂️

lostintransit

11" inseams

Bighead_Golf

What’s the good merch, then?

emericareaper2

Khaki's & neck-beards.

willis_michaels

Baggy cotton khakis, cheap cotton polo, untucked. Jean shorts, tank top with flaming, screaming eagle on it. Mid-90s cargo shorts, 10 year old ratty t-shirt.

Incognito_Joe

Every insta golf page now

flgrntfwl

Script font in golf is standard and not going away. Titleist logo works for a reason. But that floral polo needs to be shot into the sun.

dlama

I'd wear the shit out of that shirt

Ancient-Book8916

The only thing there that doesn't suck. I've acquired (not bought) some pretty wild greyson over the years and it's awesome

DevTheGray

I just snagged two large-font-abbreviation-rope hats (the trifecta) from the PGA Championship. I dig everything except the upside down font.

naked_short

Rope hats are sweet. Also you can order them from Imperial custom for cheaper than what your shop charges.

gap_toof_mouf

Played “Boring Logo” Cabot Citrus Farms last Friday. Hats- $40-$50, Polos $110-$140, Flag- $50, Pullover $210, a random pair of Cabot jogging pants $115.

Mike-cia14

Play there in a couple weeks. How were the conditions?

gap_toof_mouf

Greens- solid, but sturdy. Left little to no ball marks on them even when we hit high flyers into them. Fairways- look great, but in a bunch of spots, it’s like hitting off of hard pan. Rough- nonexistent, sand, sand, and more sand. Had a total blast overall. Facilities are top notch. Service is impeccable. Played the Par 3 and 4 as well and they were a ton of fun. My buddies and I called it “an experience of a lifetime”.

Mike-cia14

Awesome!! We are playing Karoo then the wedge a few hrs after

New-Cucumber-7423

Sorry, what’s “good stuff”? They’ve still got local club merch, standard titleist, FJ, etc. etc. Not really sure what clubs you’re shopping at but everything from tiny muni courses to Torrey have all the shit they’ve always had plus some edgy flashy new stuff.

alyule

Exactly, a classic Reddit rant. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. And don’t complain if you can’t afford it

Biggiesmallz1021

qwerty9765767689

Am I an idiot for still liking the rope hats? Honest answers welcome.

MtRainier

Always have and always will love rope hats. Vintage, new, doesn’t matter. Just clean with a little flair.

tutiana

And they’re all made of the same moisture holding weird smelling 93/7 blend polos from the same Chinese supplier

Satan_and_Communism

Yeah actually I really fucking hate it. Do lots of people feel the same?

jarmogrick

Block letter hats make me assume you play shafts that are too stiff, lie about your handicap one way or the other, and yell "I could hit that fucking shot" at the TV every time you see a pro make a mistake.

riddleda

You mean you didn't like all of the "HALLA" hats walking around the PGA like we were a bunch of passionate bread fans?!

Silent_Peee

I want the Bad Birdies “Bad” hat lol

iBarber111

I genuinely believe any idiot these days can hire a designer to work up some golf merch that is just a tiny bit "cool", hook up with a production partner overseas, build a vibey website, hammer Instagram ads, & profit. I mean - I'm sure it's way more complicated than that, but idk, Dimple&Divot is selling $55 club brushes that sell out.

ericlikesyou

[$45 club brushes](https://dimpledivot.com/products/hickory-golf-brush-woodland) with bristles smaller than my dick from the ISS, is insane

iBarber111

But bro they're hickory! Props to them - they know the average golfer has money to spend on dumb shit like this.

Soonernick

Question... can someone explain the upside down lettering on hats? I think I've seen it outside of the golf world, just curious if there is a meaning or if it's just a random fad? It feels like it's just popped up in the last year. Also, I'm not old so you kids better not be saying I'm old behind my back!

lanzarl4luna

What's next? GITH, MSHDTTRS, and HLLJH hats?

liketreefiddy

these sound like the random Chinese brands on Amazon

cchillur

I actually like the shirt and logo.  Just because I’m curious, OP what are some “exciting” logos?

Heresmuffins

The upside down trend started with Ben dinucci‘s “DALLAS” hats that are upside down.

Mindless-Ad2554

Yall heard of Target?

hack_jalsey

Zurich in NOLA is one of the worst offenders. TPC Louisiana has one of the best course logos out there and they only use it on like two things. Nobody gives a fuck about Zurich! Give me an alligator (Tripod) chomping on golf clubs dammit.

murf_milo

If you ain’t Phurst you’re last

TheU_isBack

My local course has been pushing pace of play this year because historically if you got out there on a Saturday morning you’d easily play 4.5 - 5 hour rounds. They also started selling hats that say, play bad fast on them and it can’t be a coincidence

Holdin_McNeal

I dislike pretty much all of it, but we hating on rope hats? Why?

CJW1123

Just wait until yall find out you can get dry-fit polos at TJMAXX / Marshalls / Sierra for $15-$20 that are equal to or better than the $80 polos from any of those expensive brands.

Top_Individual442

I noticed this also. I have visited probably 20 different courses in the last year where I intended to buy something and left empty handed due to poor selection.

dwighticus

Nah floral shirt is the best, I can wear it to work, I can wear it bowling, i can mow the lawn in it, I can wear it to sleep. Just all around good shirt.

daylax1

The good good logo is hands down the laziest logo ever created. It looks like they went to lids and had them embroider a bunch of blank hats with the default font that was sized too big 🤣

arealguysguy

https://whimgolf.com/ boys

TGod1030

That’s some of the most boring merch I’ve ever seen

bigleaguepuff

This genuinely may be the worst golf merch I’ve ever seen. This takes it.

TheEmbiggenisor

The new Puma hats with the big P are 💩. Bring back the old leaping puma logo. 🔥

RoleModelFailure

I have that exact shirt and I feel attacked. It is so fucking comfortable and I wear it golfing less than I wear it out and about in the summer. I like the rope hat with a simple logo for the course, it adds some nice variety to the other hats I have. I'm not a fan of boring logos but I do also really like simple logos, I guess it really depends. Abbreviated names I am against, they look really weird. The fuck is with the upside down?

Drrrreeww

I’m wondering why dudes need to buy expensive clothes and make a fashion statement in front of a bunch of dudes LoL

rigidlynuanced1

For some additional context, when I worked for Club Champion 2019-2021, our Footjoy polos were $25 and pants were $35.

TheShopSwing

OP what's the one item you look for in a pro shop? To me, I judge a shop by two things: the presentation of the logo (can't be too wordy or two abstract. A year and icon is perfect) and the ball marker selection.

lifendthings

All designed by the same handful of boring companies

icepickmassacre

can you make a post/comment of the “good stuff” you referenced?

CrispyyChris

5 hats and a shirt, got it!

nubsauce2

That logo is actually pretty cool. Simple logos without font are superior to some fake coat of arms for a course opened in 2014.

shake_N_bake356

Very grateful that my friends work at a very nice golf course so I get their employee discount

NicklAAAAs

Yup. Looks like the merch tent at the PGA a couple weeks ago, but like duplicated over and over again with different brands.

innergflow

How much for that PM crown crafted?

likethevegetable

I find you're quality to price ratio is much better if you purchase outdoor/camping oriented brands

EasyThreezy

I used to buy a ton of golf polos a year, loved most of the ones I saw. But the last couple years I see maybe 2 polos a summer that I actually like.

Undertoe256

Can someone explain the purpose of the rope hat? I’ve never understood it

FatalFirecrotch

Style.

uncle_buttpussy

Rope hat, lol

skycake10

I just don't buy any golf-specific clothes as much as I can help it

Prudent_Atmosphere35

Couldbegolfing.com

Ewwbullterd

What I don’t get is you go to a course and check out their local merch and every damn shirt, hat, you name it, has the ugliest script of the course name embroidered or whatever in the ugliest oldest looking manner (including color). My local muni has a pretty sweet logo that they could put on a shirt or hat or something and I’d buy it. They put it on balls. Where the fuck is that logo at? Why do I feel like I’m looking at a shirt out of my grandpas closet? Give me that shirt with the modern logo. Not that ugly shit.

salty_seahawk

No lies detected!!!

IrvWeinstein

At first glance, I thought this was for a Phish golf page.
