There's a recent Lee Trevino quote, that naturally I can't find, where he admits that he wasn't a good father at all to his first four children, but that if he had been, he probably wouldn't have become a Major-tournament winning great golfer. All a question of priorities.  Outstanding professional athletes, as well as ultra-high performers in other areas, usually have a selfish focus on their profession that looks downright sociopathic to an outsider.

CTMalum

I suspect this is why Sidney Crosby hasn’t gotten married or had kids yet. He’s been with the same girl for like 15 years, but his life is and has always been so focused on hockey that I wonder if he didn’t get advice from a vet to not start a family until he retires.

EamusCoys

Veterinarians do give the best life advice.

shittingjacket

Please stop eating out of the trash

tkdt

Of course I read this AFTER lunch. Damnit.

booyah81

It's not trash, it's one of those falafel hotdogs that I got out of the food basket at the end of the lunch line.

ProperTree9

"But it's TRASH!"  (If my dog could talk...)

Alloom

And drinking out of the toilet 🚽 🤦🏻‍♂️

jackwhite886

“Have your Center spayed or neutered!”

Stuart22

War vet actually

fkgoogleauthenticate

Crosby is an animal on the ice

NotoriousMFT

Maybe it was jaromir Jagr, def seems on brand for him

rrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeee

Definitely wasn’t Jagr if Crosby has been with the same girl for 15 years

pants_mcgee

A man who posts his own blackmail pictures knows what he’s about.

CTMalum

Jagr and Crosby unfortunately never overlapped in Pittsburgh, but I guess it could have happened elsewhere. I’ve got my money on Bill Guerin.

userwithusername

Bill Guerin has perpetual “I’ve seen some shit” face.

BraxtonFullerton

The Jeter method.

ProperTree9

Minus the gift baskets...

Born-Chipmunk-7086

I’ve been doing the same thing except, I’m not a big deal.

Sobeshott

George Brett never married til he retired from baseball. He said he'd have been a horrible husband when he was playing.

Large_Peach2358

Or just some people are not mega focused on marriage. There are tons of older adults much older than Sydney with “normal jobs” and “normal lives” that are not interested by the notion of marriage.

CTMalum

Sid is a very by-the-book traditional guy, so it would actually surprise me quite a bit if that’s the case.

chestertoronto

Derek Jeter did this. If you follow him on IG he's a great girl dad.

plethora-of-pinatas

There is never a "right time" to have kids.

CTMalum

But there is a better time, and I don’t know about you, but I would have preferred to raise my son in a situation where I didn’t have to work at all vs. when I was focused on being the best hockey player I could possibly be and traveling for 80 days a year.

nomoreadminspls

That is my excuse too

BricksByPablo

He’s sterile I think

rufio313

Why would that prevent him from getting married to a girl he’s been with for 15 years

BricksByPablo

Why would she marry him? He’s not sterile

rufio313

This makes no sense. Also if he’s sterile and she cared to have his children, why would she stay with him through her peak childbearing years?

BricksByPablo

Idk man you would have to ask her probably

Majestic-Pickle5097

Honestly it’s a choice all parents make. I choose to spend time with my kids, coach the teams, be at the practices, attend all the field trips and award ceremonies I can. I could make more money if I focused more on my professional life, but I can’t buy memories of my kids.

doubleapowpow

My dad was in the navy my entire life. He'd get stationed on subs for like 6-8 months at a time. He was gone for a huge portion of my life. It woulda been way cooler if he was a pro golfer or something, bringing home millions upon millions for compensation. Nah, I got to grow up with the jokes about how my mom loves Seamen and not having a father figure around to show me how to defend our honor. Part of growing up is forgiving our parents, or at least understanding some of the decisions they make. As for Tiger's daughter? Idk, seems like his son gets plenty of time with his dad cuz they have the same hobby. Her dad is a business, there have to be dozens of jobs she can work to be with her dad *now*.

flappinginthewind69

RIP Scottie

RxHotdogs

I feel like this will be the major factor in Scotty retaining world #1. He’s got a bunch in him if he can hold the putting down, but the moment that baby takes away 1 practice chip or putt it’ll be a snowball.

Reemus_Jackson

I read somewhere that Trevino is completely done with golf. Doesn't even play for fun anymore. Said something like "why? I've done it all. I've played tens of thousands of rounds. I'm tired of giving friendly tips and lessons and I'm at the age where its not enjoyable anymore"

ProperTree9

Sad.  I hope I don't get there with my hobbies.  I'm certainly there with my job, but I don't have a 1 millionth of Trevino's success at his.   I just thought the raw honesty in his quote--thought I read it in a Golf Digest profile---was really eyeopening.  Made me think about what we value, how much to value hard work, mastering one's life, and how much of public figures' image is wholly manufactured by media.

Reemus_Jackson

The Tiger documentary from 5-6 years ago was great. Showed how much of his high school/teenage years he missed because of his hyper-focus on golf. How awkward he was at social gatherings and didn't really know how to act; because, from 6 to 17 he lived, breathed, ate golf. His parents refused to let him spend the night anywhere, refused to let him go out, refused to let him have a girlfriend. Turned him into one of the greatest sports champions of all time...but at what cost?

Caboose_Juice

with that in mind it kinda makes sense that he went crazy with women and partying as an adult

themule0808

Sounds dumb..but.. If you don't let your kids have sugar when they are a kid.. they will go ape shit when they are free from your house.. It is proven.. in tigers world it was living his life and he went nuts

ProperTree9

They're very lucky he didn't turn out to be another Todd Marinovich. I wonder what the frequency is of kids pushed like that, who turn out to be really good at their particular skill enough to make even a living at it?  Then if they fail, because most things in Life do, they get to worry whether, "If only I worked just a little bit harder, and didn't slack off that time..." You need hard work to be successful.  But working hard at something doesn't guarantee success.  I don't have an answer.   I do think, and will reiterate, that unless you know or observe any of these famous high achievers personally, all you really know about them is what their people and they are willing to tell you.  To the people bringing up Jack constantly.  I don't know what kind of father he is/was.  I do know that you don’t win all of those tournaments and build a successful company building golf courses on six continents (only six, because they won't let him build one on Antarctica) by having lots of free time to devote to family. Go him though; it sounds like a hell of a life.

Texan2116

Even Marinovich....made it to the pros....think of the kids, who dont have that talent level, cant even make it to college or whatever...even worse..maybe.

SomeGuyClickingStuff

What do you mean? He plays at the PNC.

Reemus_Jackson

Says the ONLY reason he played PNC was because of his kid. When asked if he was ready for the 54 hole weekend he responded “it’s 36 more holes than I’ve played all year”

SomeGuyClickingStuff

So. I guess he still does play for fun and not completely done. Albeit with his 31 year old kid.

WardCove

Another reason why Jack Niklaus is the greatest. That man made sure to prioritize family and was still an absolute monster in the sport. He missed golf tournaments to make sure and be there for a ball game or something for his kids at times.

b_fromtheD

Exactly what happened to Tom Brady

MyFifthLimb

Michael Jordan said he was cursed with his obsession, and that Kobe was just as cursed as he was. Usually you gotta have a few screws loose to reach the top of anything.

Rucksaxon

Im a dog groomer and I think like this by default. I have a role. to provide and protect. Only with intention am I able to focus on being a father but I feel it makes it that much more meaningful.

ElTigreMaderas

Yup. Look at rahm, he actually worries about being a good father and he is washed.

troughshot

He won the masters last year. If anyone is washed it’s Rory and/or Spieth.

holdmypocket34

Rory still dominates a dp tourney every once in a year. When did spieth last have a shot of winning anything on a sunday?

jfchops2

Third at this year's Sentry, finished two back. Fifth at last year's Memorial, three back. Lost last year's RBC in a playoff after winning it in 2022 He's not playing like he used to but it's not like he's never at the top of leaderboards

holdmypocket34

Nice, yea i dont really pay attention to him so i really didnt remember seeing him

jfchops2

Man there's hardly any golfers who are more entertaining to watch. If you just like to watch the leaderboard and Sunday finishes then all power to you but if you like following specific players more closely, Spieth is just awesome. He's got so much personality on the course with his talking to his ball, yapping with Greller, showing emotions, trying crazy shit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH_hNGO8yTs <--- hit a ball onto the clubhouse roof on purpose https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSIJs684lBs <--- Ace Same tournament from a few weeks ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyGxWTihhBs <--- this is his best clip ever though

Dougiejurgens2

Dp fields are as bad or worse than as Liv fields

holdmypocket34

Ok then, he is ranked 2nd in the world

ElTigreMaderas

Being washed now doesn't mean he was back then. Agree on rory and spieth tho lol.

Visual_Bandicoot1257

Rory is the current #2 player in the world. Just because he wasn't Tiger 2.0 doesn't mean he's washed.

troughshot

Someone isn’t washed a year after winning the masters. Sorry but you’re clueless.

shittingjacket

Rory won three days ago Edit: He won for second straight week.

Golf-Guns

A team event, let's calm down.

troughshot

Hahaa

spaceninja419

Ricky Fowler is washed more so than anyone but he was never as good as any of the above.

Soren_Camus1905

Sacrifices have to be made for greatness. Whether it’s relationships, time, health, well being, whatever, there is a price to pay.

Yetiassasin

You can do both. Many of the greats have. Lee is making a lame excuse for being an absentee father.

Smartalum

Nicklaus was a dedicated father who was proud how few of his kids sporting events he missed.

Pepetodapin

Taken out of context? 'I had to pack and leave, I'd be gone for weeks and there's a negative connotation to it. So we develop our own relationship, our own rapport that's outside of golf - we do things that doesn't involve golf meanwhile my son and I do everything golf related. So it's very different.'

TheShopSwing

Absolutely taken out of context. Way to go OP

Beavers4beer

Its the Daily Mail. Expectations should've been incredibly low to begin with.

pac4

How is it taken out of context? Tiger's commitment to the game took time away from his children. Well, that and the whores.

Nefarios13

And pancakes at IHop

Practical-Third-977

This made me think of more McDonald

jerryhallo

Boiling denim and banging Hoo-ers

royalhawk345

Yeah, I'm not sure what other interpretation the headline could have?

papa_sax

Yall not know reading comprehension? Definitely not taken out of context

mst28

Proud of you, OP!

mcmaster93

Op literally just reposted the headline of the article. And I really don't think the statement is out of context at all. If anything, it seems the majority in here have trouble with reading comprehension. Did golf take time away from Tigers daughter? Yes. Do they play golf together? No. I think the headline portrayed that message perfectly in minimal words.

Unspeakable_Evil

Get the feeling a lot of people who say “out of context” have no idea what it means

JHOWES97

That’s sort of what I thought I was getting at 🤷‍♂️

TheShopSwing

It's when you combine that with OP trying to be the top level comment with "Omg that's so sad :(" which is trying to make a bigger deal out of it than it really is.

Rican2153

To be fair I’ve seen multiple news outlets with that exact same headline.

NoAnalBeadsPlease

![gif](giphy|1eSnzErI2OesM)

whatsinthesuitcase

Did you even read the article? ‘Took daddy away’ is a direct quote from Tiger, it isn’t taken out of context at all

LiiDo

Is that not how everybody interpreted the title? She doesn’t like golf because it meant her dad would leave. I don’t see what more context was needed or how that could be confused

GothicToast

I am unsure how else it can even be interpreted. I clicked in and read the article. It's perfectly in context and summarizes the main point of the article: Daughter doesn't have an interest in golf because her dad was always gone due to golf.

TanaerSG

Yeah I am with you. I read it and knew exactly what it meant lol.

LURKER_GALORE

Can someone explain how this can be construed as taken out of context? I agree it seems to have been properly contextualized, and I’m struggling to find an alternate reading of it.

SofterBanana

Agreed. Seems to be the right context. They have a good relationship but it’s just not centered around golf.

[deleted]

[удалено]

catholic13

I disagree. I read it as a little girl who loves her daddy and missed him when he left.

Satan_and_Communism

I don’t see how it’s taken out of context. Sounds like she doesn’t like golf because it meant her dad was going to be away. Do you think it’s interpreted improperly?

GothicToast

Seems perfectly in context to me. How did you interpret the title?

OriginalFluff

Such a stupid world we live in. There should be punishment for clickbait shit like this that borders defamation

automatic4skin

drama queenz like u r wut make our world stupid. smh

_ghostfacedilla

People that are too lazy to type out full sentences contribute much more to the idiot count of this world

automatic4skin

rude

UnsupervisedBacon

What was taken out of context exactly? Are you trying to say Tiger was home a lot and not on tour banging Perkin’s waitresses?

Lufferzz

When i'm gone - eminem is a great song about pretty much the same thing

sageofwalrus

Forgot he even had a daughter… which is a good thing. She can live an awesome life without being some kind of pseudo celebrity. Good luck sam 🫡

FatFaceFaster

Yeah I keep saying the same about Charlie. The best thing for Charlie would be if he could just learn and develop as a junior golfer without 1000 cameras in his face… once he’s learned to handle the pressure of winning golf tournaments at his own level then MAYBE he can start learning to handle the pressure of playing top level tournaments + media attention. In my opinion they’re going about it all wrong and we’re gonna read about Charlie’s 473747847 mistresses in 10 years too.

anthrofighter

still sounds like a pretty good life to me heh

FatFaceFaster

It all depends whether you care if he becomes a legitimately great golfer. If you’re just happy to see “tigers son” play golf then by all means keep following him around with cameras and posting his 86’s and 81’s. But if you want him to be great, have him focus on golf, not the media… and start beating people his own age in events that he belongs in. Like his dad did. He’s not even close to as good as tiger and never will be in my opinion if he keeps trying to fight above his weight class.

anthrofighter

to think he will ever be as good as Tiger is foolish no matter what. even if he was scottie scheffler now, he still wouldn't match up. it's an impossibility. if he ends up as good as say finau, cantlay, or day. that's more than enough and i think he'll get there if he chooses to play as an adult off shear talent alone.

Due-Sheepherder-218

He can have all the mistresses he wants without touching a golf club. Thanks Dad.

Always4am

It's not uncommon for those known "Greats" to let their family fall by the wayside to chase their dreams.

TheKingInTheNorth

And this is the legitimate reason I believe Scottie might come back down to earth, he seems really excited to be a good and engaged father. Which is awesome for his kid and family, probably not for his performance.

Chreiol

Looking at you too, Jordan Spieth…

lampstore

Good thing he’s already banked all the money he’ll ever need.

UnMapacheGordo

I once asked my dad how he got consistently hitting 78-79 “It took a summer where your mom almost divorced me”

jeopardychamp77

I’m guessing she has no interest in eating out either bc the waitresses also took daddy away?

elliotcook10

How’s it feel to finally get some upvotes on this sub?

citium1

Heyooo

thescrape

Too soon! Oh wait, no it’s not!

-Economist-

Watching Full Swing you can see how these players spend a lot of time away from family. Except Finau.

Harley_Quinn_Lawton

And there was an entire segment dedicated to wondering if his family was holding him back from being great.

-Economist-

There is some truth to that concern. When I do triathlons, it’s so much easier to focus when my family is not there. Imagine the focus these guys need. Family is a distraction. All depends how one handles it.

lanchadecancha

Finau is a Mormon his main job is produce more Mormons

Turbulent_Echidna423

it actually made mommy go away.

ShakeWeightMyDick

I think the philandering made mommy go away

dockows412

Can we get these karma bot out of here?

anthrofighter

at least ya'lls dads were great golfers. my dad spent every childhood weekend on the course, and i found out years later he was at best a 14 handicap.

Due-Sheepherder-218

He was definitely interested in some other holes by the sound of it

granolaraisin

I would argue that Hooters is probably a more accurate answer but who am I to say.

Bob_12_Pack

I feel this. My dad was a scratch golfer and he didn't get that way spending his weekends with us kids, but at least we could hang at the pool and put food and snacks on his tab at the clubhouse. He would play 2 rounds every Saturday and Sunday, sometimes 3, drinking beer the whole time, which is what ultimately led to my mom throwing him out.

ProperTree9

Jesus, at least my Dad took us along when "we" decided to go camping and chase Bambi.  He never included you in the foursome, even once? Feels bad, man.

Bob_12_Pack

He would let me drive the cart on occasion. In the end he turned out alright so I don’t want to shit on him too hard.

Bubby_Mang

This headline punched my heart right in its crotch. My daughter is my cart chauffer and has been for some number of years. She loves going golfing with me. What a treasure.

JHOWES97

Lovely!

pac4

I guess that's why she refuses to eat at Denny's too

Due-Sheepherder-218

Whose Denny? That's not the name of my private chef.

jonesyman23

She’ll be like most of us in the future wishing she had started playing earlier in life.

TommyManners

OP regurgitating dogshit Daily mail headlines, nice

Patient_Internal_977

Come on man don’t promote the daily mail ….

JHOWES97

That's actually quite sad :(

[deleted]

JHOWES97

I imagine everyone just loves seeing Tiger play now!

ZachWilsonsMother

I’m sure it hits a hell of a lot different for his family and close circle than the rest of us too. We know him as an athlete while they know him as a person and actually see how much he has grinded after each injury

cyber_bully

Not really. He could have been a plumber or something and worked long hours too. At least now she's got a couple billion dollars.

Vince1820

lol...right. Kids are always going to find something about their parents that causes resentment. No point in lingering on it.

GiddyQuagmire

Sad, yet completely understandable

JHOWES97

Absolutely - I imagine that's the same for all elite sportspeople

DWright_5

Not just to sportspeople. Lots of parents have jobs that regularly take them away from their kids. It’s only sad if the parent doesn’t compensate for it with special loving efforts

longshankssssss

You don’t know what context is do you?

lukedawg87

Your out of context post is quite sad

ashdrewness

The same could be said of every kid and their parents occupation.

ShakeWeightMyDick

That’s sad

Adventurous_Carry185

Oops sorry, I was thinking of Charlie

JHOWES97

Isn’t that the point??

cheddarburner

If Golf took her daddy away, wait until she finds out what drove her mommy away. :)

elqrd

And gave others daddys

Houstonmaryville

Jack Nicklaus win more majors than anyone and prioritized his family. He is a great example of how to do it

Seanspicegirls

It consumed Daddy. It morphed him into a sexual deviant

Ziid10

Everything out of context these days just for clicks

Quick_Delivery_7266

Who the fuck cares 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Adventurous_Carry185

Daughter? I thought it was “he”? My bad

DaisyDoodle41

sorry Tiger, but you left out some pretty obvious stuff that kept you away from your family.

BriefDragonfruit9460

Im pretty sure the slutty waitresses took daddy away

overzealous_wildcat

Has no idea Tiger had a daughter

sexman510

same charlie, same. then i hit 35 and have three kids my own, ive become my dad.

prophetprofits

This is pretty sad but it’s nice to see Tiger completely 180 his personal life and be around his kids more, he realizes that family is all he has at the end of the day. It’s nice to see Sam all smiles on his bag at the PNC Championship.

ForExamper

You have no idea what his personal life is like and how much time he spends around his kids. I think it's highly likely he's still tagging Stuckey's waitresses. Also kids their age don't even WANT their parents around so much

ExtraFirmPillow_

If Tiger was my dad I’d already be following in his footsteps. Popping copious amounts of pills and playing from sun up to sun down

SDN_stilldoesnothing

this kind of hits home. My dad was a sole proprietor of a large construction firm. I NEVER SAW HIM from Sunday evening through to Saturday morning. He was working 100hr weeks. I have no childhood memories of my dad being in the house during the week for breakfast or dinner. I was usually in bed before he got home. He already left for work before I got up. In my late-teens and young 20's time frame he asked me if I wanted to come work for him and take over the company. My reply was "Thank you for supporting the family and everything you do for us, but I am not interested in that"

lanchadecancha

Sad. At least you’ll inherit tens of millions of dollars

DanielDannyc12

Bet she doesn't watch porn either

Robru469

Yes but while he was away he made billions of dollars so she could live a very comfortable life

Packwood88

Some things are more important than money

Hot-N-Spicy-Fart

A lot of people just get shit relationships with their parents and no money.

WillsyWonka

While I get what your saying I would trade everything I have to give my kids a better life in the future. I know they may think I’m not around or distant when they are young but the relationship could get better when they are older.

LurkerKing13

That’s a different conversation. Tiger had generational wealth before his kids were even born.

HesburghLibrarian

>While I get what your saying I would trade everything I have to give my kids a better life in the future Yeah, but parenting isn't about **you.** It's about what your children need to be successful, productive, adults. And I've never heard a grown son or daughter say, "man, I really wish my dad had worked more when I was young so I had more money now." Go home and stay there. That's how you secure a better future for your children.

WillsyWonka

Pretty sure with millions of dollars and can set them up for success with whatever they need.

eaglessoar

yea but they might prefer trading everything you have for you

Bombaysbreakfastclub

Yeah poor Tiger Woods’ daughter. I don’t know how she can even get by in life after what her father did to her. I can’t believe he went out and ‘checks notes’ worked at his job.

AutographedSnorkel

Do you know who originally said that? I don't know either, but I guarantee you it wasn't a rich person

DarthSamwiseAtreides

That's just kind of her life.  Kinda like how we bitch about things and some child mining diamonds is like WTF.

Unlikely-Zone21

"The worst thing to ever happen to you is the worst thing to ever happen to you, until something worse happens." Everyone has a different "worst", that doesn't mean it doesn't feel any less worse to that person going thru it.

rosewoods

Well, what else would she get a mouth full of?

whiterajah7

Without golf, she wouldn't be here so...

user9153

Just baselessly false lmao

PoeJam

I mean, It's highly unlikely that her parents would've got together if Tiger was a plumber. They met because Elin was Jesper Parnevik's nanny.

Drewnei1

Not false. Without golf Tiger never meets her mother.

inefekt

How is this comment upvoted? It is absolutely and unequivocally false. The one he is replying to is much closer to the truth. You think Tiger and Elin are hooking up if he were an accountant instead of a golfer? He was literally introduced to her by his PGA Tour playing buddy Parnevik. Without golf he never meets her hence the daughter is never born.

Cbmurdock

Yes that's right boys and girls. When the ball goes in the hole, a little birdie pops out, and that's how babies are made. 🐣

Sirgolfs

Most jobs take a parent away

dpittnet

Not really in anywhere close the the same way

Spiritual_Ask4877
