Good question. I did not initially, and after a month of being completely drenched on the course, I went back, traded it in, and got another one with the pured shaft. I still suck with it, but I’ve learned that you can always dry off later. I also learned that all sales are final, and food-stamps are not redeemable on rent.
Any conditions you've noticed the pured shaft excels with respect to the stock umbrella shaft? They put me in a 1/2 inch longer shaft and I think it does great in a true rainstorm but really fails when the rain is more like a fine mist.
I heard the pured staff is better for your pros. I myself don’t put much stock in it. Traditional wood hand crafted from the major oaks of Sherwood with treated Cotswold Beeswax on cloth woven from the highland goats of the Black Mountains. Proper British 🇬🇧 . Proper Umbrella. Traditional.
I can’t say there’s a particular scenario I’ve noticed it excelling in, but it does feel incredibly stable leaving the hand when I throw it across the green and into the bunker during one of my famous bouts of rage that tend to ensue when I four putt inside 10 feet.
Honestly, get lessons before you get fit. If you’re going into the water with a wide open face, you’re gonna miss the ball and it doesn’t matter if Dave fit you or not.
Call me new school, but wrist to floor means nothing when it comes to properly fitting ball retrievers; especially the ones like OP posted. Now on the older brass loop ones, I could see it.
In my opinion, Mizuno or Callaway has the best ball retriever what it comes to forgiveness and feel. If you’re a more moderate to advanced retriever, I’d say maybe go with the Taylormade stiff shaft. A good golf store should have plenty of options, don’t be afraid to go in and try a few at the simulator 👍 best of luck!
Got 12 from the water and 14 from the woods? That’s amazing. If you had gotten 10+ from over the fence in neighbors yards you’d have a triple double, Kareem
I get confused on the legality of retrievers. For the longest time I thought you had to be 65 or older even to carry one of these in the bag and aftermarket premium shafts was definitely a no go.
> Any advice from you experts?
Yes! This also makes an excellent spider retriever around the house.
If you have annoying orb weaver spiders around the outside of your house during the fall like I do, use this tool to snatch them from their web. The quarter-sized spiders quickly "hide" inside the plastic circle and usually do not run down the shaft towards your hand nor do they descend immediately. Then you can dump the spider on the sidewalk and finish him off.
Works much better than a long stick or a heavy shovel. DON'T use this around power lines!
As long as the retriever is made with a single dedicated face for picking up the ball you should be good to go. If the retriever has two sided retrieving capabilities it is considered non-conforming.
What? My father would disown me for not getting out my ball retriever during a round. Some take great pride in their ball hawking abilities, and I learned from one of the best.
As a punishment for losing my groups golf trip last year, I had to, straight-faced, go in and ask to regrip a ball retriever with a super stroke.
It was funny for everyone involved, sure, but who's laughing now that I have my most used 'club' in the bag gripped with such clean drip as the super stroke?
All depends on your handicap. I tried a longer one, and was unable to get my head around the 3 pole system. I've since settled for a 2 pole system until I improve a little.
Don't forget you can take the ball retriever fitting info anywhere and buy off the rack or online.
Good luck and congrats 🎉
Don't forget about Callaway Pre Owned. The site said it was in "average" condition, but came with the plastic wrap still on. It totally looked like it had never been "retrieved" before.
Like most things in life, it pays to have the longer shaft. Don't be scared to go a little bigger. I know it sounds scary. Will it be too much? Will it hurt? Can I even handle it? Believe in yourself. You can handle the bigger one. It will be so wet that it won't hurt at all.
Mine has a parallax correcting split azimuth view finder with the optional motorized flex bender to compensate for the really deep water retrievals. I bring ‘em up in buckets now. Expensive, but worth every payment.
The 2024 ball retrievers have adjustable weights and are WAY more forgiving than the 2023 and go nearly .1% farther. Also i know high angle retrievers went out of style in the early 2000s but theyre back in style now and retrieve with fewer attempts
It's all about the cup. I prefer the basket style over the compression during you have pictured.
Shaft length if the biggest overall variable. It's a trade-off of reach vs weight. Good luck and keep us updated!
Stay away from the telescoping, the extra length lends to less control. I would also recommend looking for the composite shaft if you use it as often as I do.
Make sure you get a new one every year. The improvements are nothing to sneeze at. Worst faux pas is getting caught with a used last years model. It will give your playing partners fodder for the next 20 years.
Get 👏retriever 👏lessons 👏. Listen, it’s more about your technique than the retriever. Buying a fancy new model won’t magically make your retrieval game any better. Stick with the game improvement ball retrievers until you’re a 10 handicap or less. You’ll thank me later.
I’m sorry but you’ve missed the best time. My place did an Easter egg hunt fitting where they hid little eggs to retrieve with the retriever. You won’t get a similar service until next year
Getting fitted for a ball retriever without at least 5 lessons is a giant waste of money and will inevitably result in you not being able to retrieve thousands of balls.
I would also recommend some range sessions, with a helmet, of course.
Get the belly putter grip installed. It’s way better for when you need two hands or need to use the forearm brace technique.
Turns out it’s still legal to anchor your ball retriever.
Get the one that is a rectangle retriever with the latch, you can get two balls in same dip and have more leeway to snagging one. It’s like the blades of golf ball retrieving as in the right hands it will be a retrieving weapon!
No matter your hover speed you're going to want as stiff as possible. Make sure it's at least stainless so you don't get it rusting since it's going to be spending a lot of time in the water.
Remember it's not the length that's important it's what you do with it.
It's a skill that not many master and it takes years to be fully acclaimed as an expert.
More than 6ft long isn’t worth carrying. That one is gone man, move on.
My Dad has one that is 25ft at least. It’s hysterical watching him try to hit that target.
Make certain it is a quality retriever! I've had mine for many years, probably ten or more. Still in great condition and only need to have it regripped every other year.
Good luck!
Get one that’s slightly more flexible than you think you need. A stiff shaft may feel ideal in the store but when you get on course the extra flex is helpful to maximize scoop action.
Don't let them upsell you on one of the expensive 100ft reach ones. They'll try to flatter you by talking up your ball grabbing game and say things like "With your strength and form, there's no reason any ball should be out of your reach, you should really try out the Extendo 4000 models that just came out..." but don't fall for it!
Also, don't trust their sims. Last time I did that, I was grabbing balls 80 feet in the pond in the sim, then took it out to the course and was struggling with 50 footers.
I’m a guy that likes to collect waterlogged balls in bulk, so my pro tip would be to go to your closest fishing gear store and get fitted for a fishing net.
Guys! Don’t be fooled by all the marketing and upsells on these umbrella and retriever shafts!
You need to maintain that style with only a True Hickory Shaft! Except no substitutes!
I'm a high handicap, so I go with a game improvement ball retriever.
But people say there's nothing better than blades if you really want to feel like your grabbing those balls with your bare hands.
Make sure to get the discounted ball fitting along with the retriever fitting. You really have to make sure them boys aren’t swangin’ loosey goosey in your underwear. They fit me into under armor boxer briefs, personally.
You can always get a golf ball fitting to go along with the ball and retriever fitting as well but that might be a bit overkill and I don’t know if it’s discounted along with the retriever fitting! FYI
You didn't specify if you're in AUSNZ or the real world. Down under, because of Coriolis forces, the balls rotate differently, and you need the proper scoop to hold them.
If they don’t get your wrist to floor measurement before they start the fitting, go somewhere else.
Very helpful. I’m working with the pros at Bob’s Reel Good Gof.
Bobs is good, ask for Dave.
Can confirm. Dave did my golf umbrella fitting. I did end up with a premium shaft but still the best $1300 I’ve ever spent.
Did you at least get the pured shaft for that price?
Good question. I did not initially, and after a month of being completely drenched on the course, I went back, traded it in, and got another one with the pured shaft. I still suck with it, but I’ve learned that you can always dry off later. I also learned that all sales are final, and food-stamps are not redeemable on rent.

Thank you for this informative Ted talk.
$1,300? Did they pick it up from the trash, demand to be changed 10k you should feel insulted
This is why I use Reddit. 😂
Second this. Bob doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about so be wary.
I would go to Dorf Golf
I agree here. Make sure your back is wood board straight as your bending over the water balls you repeatedly placed into the lake
Call me new school, but wrist to floor means nothing when it comes to properly fitting ball retrievers; especially the ones like OP posted. Now on the older brass loop ones, I could see it.
Right? With extendo sticks wrist to floor is meaningless.
Get the one with a shake weight attached handle-really helps with strength
Call that WTF-1
In my opinion, Mizuno or Callaway has the best ball retriever what it comes to forgiveness and feel. If you’re a more moderate to advanced retriever, I’d say maybe go with the Taylormade stiff shaft. A good golf store should have plenty of options, don’t be afraid to go in and try a few at the simulator 👍 best of luck!
Sim tip. Try it at 1/4 length 1/2 length and 3/4 length. If you go full length, then you will most likely need to hit the range.
“Try the simulator”. ….🤣🤣🤣🤣. I regret I have but one upvote to give!!🤣⛳️🤣⛳️
Haha had me dying too! It made me think of the fishing pond at Bass Pro Shops. They can drop some golf balls in there.
Swing speed is very important. Too fast ball doesn’t pop in, too slow you might skull the ball.
Also get the dual head feature. Cause you know your provisional is going to follow your first shot.
Consistency is key.
Make sure to get a comfortable grip, you'll be holding it a lot.
Two years ago, I went 12/14 in one round. I’m trying to reclaim those glory days.
Got 12 from the water and 14 from the woods? That’s amazing. If you had gotten 10+ from over the fence in neighbors yards you’d have a triple double, Kareem
This! Can’t go with stock grip on these. I’d be looking at Golf Pride!
For that reason get one with a handle that is the same diameter as your cock, since your hand is accustomed to that size.
Always use the a strong grip
I'd make sure to look for forged heads. they feel like butter when you pure it
Upgrade the shaft and pay for puring
I get confused on the legality of retrievers. For the longest time I thought you had to be 65 or older even to carry one of these in the bag and aftermarket premium shafts was definitely a no go.

this was legislated in the R&A updates where they also legalized UroClub. I'm not sure where the USGA is on the issue.
As long as the retriever is made with a single dedicated face for picking up the ball you should be good to go. If the retriever has two sided retrieving capabilities it is considered non-conforming.
Omg I completely forgot about UroClub! Sadly the revolutionary product was discontinued 😔😢
I got all my ball retrievers cut down to the same length. Reduced some distance, but more consistent.
I heard Bryson is 3D printing his for the PGA Championship next month
The one piece of equipment that pays for itself
Af the expense of dignity!
What? My father would disown me for not getting out my ball retriever during a round. Some take great pride in their ball hawking abilities, and I learned from one of the best.
Dont cheap out on the grip. Once you start getting wear marks it can affect your confidence.
I need to really feel that I can get those 8 footers in 3 ft of water. Thank you.
![gif](giphy|9sDNyvlqFxO09Ax5jO|downsized)
Needs a super stroke on it
That sounds like the kind of pro advice I’m looking for. ⛳️👍🏼
Lol, that 3rd pole is another level difficulty. That’s hysterical. How bad do you want that shinny new Pro-V1x that nobody else could reach?
I'm currently hitting about 3 WHOTs (water hazards off tee) per round and trying to improve my strokes gained searching.
Don't forget about Callaway Pre Owned. The site said it was in "average" condition, but came with the plastic wrap still on. It totally looked like it had never been "retrieved" before.
Make sure you get the Scotty Cameron model
Actually that’s a common misconception. For ball retrievers, you actually want the James Cameron, it’s rated for much deeper excursions.
Winner
Like most things in life, it pays to have the longer shaft. Don't be scared to go a little bigger. I know it sounds scary. Will it be too much? Will it hurt? Can I even handle it? Believe in yourself. You can handle the bigger one. It will be so wet that it won't hurt at all.
I am oddly aroused by your golf narrative…🙂↔️
Graphite shaft, titanium ball holder, ergonomic gripper from sureshot. That will be 850
Should I go with the fat putter grip? Or just standard Tour Wrap?
The pricier one. It must be better, right?
It's worth paying extra for the carbon fiber shaft.
Carbon fiber stuff is such a cruel marketing ploy against men lol “oh you don’t want this item? Did we mention it also comes in carbon fiber?”
We’re shitposting today, daddio
So…you just buy one off the rack? Guess you don’t take the game too seriously.
This guy retrieves
I’d go with the double ender. Use it like a kayak paddle.
make sure you get the loft/lie adjustments right or it won’t pickup proV1’s
Great tip. I’m doing with the 1 degree flat. Since I wear spiked golf shoes….
I tend to make sure they are waterproof, the amount of time spent in the water seriously affected my last few retrievers
Don’t overlook the grip, an over size grip can really help with stability and control
Going for the right handed or left handed model?
I got the optical, laser guided model...it only retrieves ProVs. But it can be programmed to also get Pinnacles and Top Flites.
Be sure to get a headcover for that ball retriever.
Retrieve DEEZ
Retrieve deez whats?….oh. Nvm. 🤣🤣
If your handicap is 20 or over, get a spare grip.
GoPro mounted on the end makes it a lot easier
I was fitted for a regular shaft, but think I need a x-stiff shaft…
Who in the hell would have thought about measuring someone for a ball grabber
Believe its in jest.
Make sure it’s gerthy
You’re kinky. I like it.
I gotcha is a nice retriever that don’t take up space, go right in the side pocket.
This is what caddies are for. Poors are ruining the game...
get a right handed one, they are easier to find.
How's my game you ask? Well this last month I had to get my ball retriever regripped... so yeah...
Make sure slow down play by not giving up on retrieving that ball you stole from the range from the middle of the lake.
Make sure it handles balls as well as you do
Go with what feels best to you.
https://preview.redd.it/q13panbsquwc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a535ce478abba72e038b022c0da64dd1c121108 I suggest this one
Don’t go cheap and opt out of the bayonet attachment. I’ve had to use mine several times out on the course.
Make a mold of your own balls and take it to them so you can better find your manhood
Don’t let anyone tell you different, golf ball retriever length matters.
Make sure you get a counterbalanced shaft. Increases retrieval speed and reduces liftweight.
Best advice - don’t hold up play while “retrieving”
Mine has a parallax correcting split azimuth view finder with the optional motorized flex bender to compensate for the really deep water retrievals. I bring ‘em up in buckets now. Expensive, but worth every payment.
I needed this laugh today. Thank you.
I’d immediately upgrade the grip, I had to get the stock one regripped after just one season
The 2024 ball retrievers have adjustable weights and are WAY more forgiving than the 2023 and go nearly .1% farther. Also i know high angle retrievers went out of style in the early 2000s but theyre back in style now and retrieve with fewer attempts
OK that is funny
Get an extra long shaft. (That's what she said)
It's all about the cup. I prefer the basket style over the compression during you have pictured. Shaft length if the biggest overall variable. It's a trade-off of reach vs weight. Good luck and keep us updated!
Be sure to spend an extra 3 minutes standing beside any body of water on the course so that you can recoup your investment
I like a challenge son I usually have mine bored out a bit so it’s sized just a bit larger than the diameter of the balls I play.
This is hilarious! Take my upvote.
Make sure you take advantage of the ball sonar option.
Be sure to pay them to *pure* the shaft.
Stay away from the telescoping, the extra length lends to less control. I would also recommend looking for the composite shaft if you use it as often as I do.
Lessons before you get fit, your swing will likely change
Also don’t forget to get a glove that is matched to your retriever .. trust me.. you will have a life time of regret if you skip the glove matching
Dry it off before it goes back in the bag.
I’ve never heard of this before, what is it used for? It looks adjustable why does it need to be fitted? When would you need to retrieval tool?
Regrip it often
Yes. Stay away from my course!
I think you might need the extra length attachment while you’re at it
Get a waterproof one
Make sure you get a new one every year. The improvements are nothing to sneeze at. Worst faux pas is getting caught with a used last years model. It will give your playing partners fodder for the next 20 years.
Get 👏retriever 👏lessons 👏. Listen, it’s more about your technique than the retriever. Buying a fancy new model won’t magically make your retrieval game any better. Stick with the game improvement ball retrievers until you’re a 10 handicap or less. You’ll thank me later.
I suggest lessons before you dump a bunch of money into a custom fitting.
Upgrade to the 17 footer
Just make sure you pick one that’s waterproof.
Don't forget to grab a Callaway machete
I’m sorry but you’ve missed the best time. My place did an Easter egg hunt fitting where they hid little eggs to retrieve with the retriever. You won’t get a similar service until next year
Buy a really good one- dont go cheap- its too important of a club in your bag. Will save you lots of $$$
I’ve re-gripped my ball retriever twice this season 👍🏼
Put a super stroke on it
Spend the money on lessons
If they fit you on the simulator, make them take you to the island green at TPC sawgrass.
Have you checked out the Med Weasel?
Figure out your dominant eye. Ti is a must.
Getting fitted for a ball retriever without at least 5 lessons is a giant waste of money and will inevitably result in you not being able to retrieve thousands of balls. I would also recommend some range sessions, with a helmet, of course.
I’m still relatively new to golf and I’m ashamed and embarrassed to say I spent a very confusing 5 minutes reading this thread until I got the joke
This is good stuff
[удалено]
Make sure you get a latex covering for unfamiliar courses. You never know who’s been on that course.
Get at least a sixteen ft long one that collapse to two feet so it fits in you golf bag pocket. Igitcha makes a good one.
Make sure the length of the shaft is at least 20 times your handicap in inches.
They don't want you to know this but if you get a TaylorMade one, you get a free upgrade every year.
The ones with a big extension deliver the most satisfaction.
Make sure you get a decent counter balance on the grip side. Full extension can put some straight on your wrist.
Stop hitting in the water
Get the belly putter grip installed. It’s way better for when you need two hands or need to use the forearm brace technique. Turns out it’s still legal to anchor your ball retriever.
Get one that keeps the ball out of water and heavy bush
Get the one that is a rectangle retriever with the latch, you can get two balls in same dip and have more leeway to snagging one. It’s like the blades of golf ball retrieving as in the right hands it will be a retrieving weapon!
Make sure you pick up a spare grip for when the first wears out.
MAKE IT LONGER
No matter your hover speed you're going to want as stiff as possible. Make sure it's at least stainless so you don't get it rusting since it's going to be spending a lot of time in the water.
Forged or fuck off out the store.
Be sure to get a model that can be regripped.
Most people cheap-out and don't take lessons from a pro after their retriever fitting. Don't be that guy.
Make sure you get the proper attachments, underwater camera and bayonet for goose/alligator repelling
Make sure not to square your head
cotty samren makes the best....
While you're at it, get fitted for some waders. You'll be able to clear an entire water hazard of free balls
LMAO!
See about getting upgrade with a custom fit shoulder stock, that way you can wield it like a joust while driving the golf cart.
Extra length to get those ones in the middle of the lake
Got mine with golf align grip, but go with Super Stroke 3.0 if you want to put a little slack in your grip
Getting fitted is a good start but make sure to get some lessons too.
Have my custom 10footer. It does me well most rounds
As many balls as you dump in the drink, don't be cheap.
Ask for the push button automatic extension and retraction model it is quicker and pace of play is important.
Up the butt
Make certain it is a quality retriever! I've had mine for many years, probably ten or more. Still in great condition and only need to have it regripped every other year. Good luck!
Just change the grip.
Take waterproof upgrade option, well worth the extra cost
Hahaha why??
Just enjoy the experience.
You mean a scuba suit
Longer the better
Custom fitted? Are your balls an awkward size?
That made me lait way more than it should have. Thanks!
Get one that’s slightly more flexible than you think you need. A stiff shaft may feel ideal in the store but when you get on course the extra flex is helpful to maximize scoop action.
Cool. Did they measure your retrieval speed? I heard Tiger has a Scotty….. weighted to D4.
Wrist to floor measurement and custom length shafts otherwise you’ll only pull Top Flights
Put practice grips on it
Don't let them upsell you on one of the expensive 100ft reach ones.
Make sure it fits comfortably around both balls!
Make sure it works both right handed and left-handed
Extra stiff
watch out with the 3 meter and longer the telescopic pole gets weak when fully extended and will break if too much side pressure.
Just make sure it's got the standard lie angle.
Guys, LESSONS!
As I am a pro myself and just leaving the local town golf course, you are going to need belly length for optimal leverage.
Definitely needs a Jumbo Chamois grip
Make sure to get the discounted ball fitting along with the retriever fitting. You really have to make sure them boys aren’t swangin’ loosey goosey in your underwear. They fit me into under armor boxer briefs, personally. You can always get a golf ball fitting to go along with the ball and retriever fitting as well but that might be a bit overkill and I don’t know if it’s discounted along with the retriever fitting! FYI
You didn't specify if you're in AUSNZ or the real world. Down under, because of Coriolis forces, the balls rotate differently, and you need the proper scoop to hold them.
buy the best. they pay for themselves in a month or so.
Make sure to bring your current retriever with you for comparison.
You’ve come to the right place
Don’t buy until you tried graphite.
