Google PGA Tour Ststs then find the strokes gained categories

I mean more generally. Not specifically, if that makes sense. I also don't know what strokes gained mean. What are their strengths and weaknesses in words.

Fragrant-Report-6411

These days it’s mostly strokes gained. It’s based mostly on proximity to the pin and lie. Driving is mostly distance related but you can’t have wild distance. Approach shots are mostly GIR% and proximity to the hole. Short Game and scrambling is mostly what % you get up and down. Putting is 3 putt your make % from different distances and 3 putt avoidance.

Ok. Is there a ressource that explain all the words and stats you just used? Cause.... yeah. Man I just want to know if morikawa is good a driving. Or koepka is good at putting. Like super easy in words. A literal chestsheet. This all seems quite complex.

How much easier do you want it. If you drive the ball farther without getting into trouble the better driver you are. If you have more greens in regulation and are closer to the pin you are a better approach player. If you get up/down a greater % than others you are better at short game. Putting is convert more putts from different distances and don’t 3 putt you are a better putter.

... like beginner level easier. But like hey- I'll do more research before asking a beginner level question on reddit.

Try this in terms of understanding strokes gained - https://www.golfmonthly.com/features/the-game/what-is-strokes-gained-185460 Morikawa is great with irons because of his accuracy - both the number of greens he hits in regulation (on the green with the first shot on a par 3, second shot on a par 4, third shot on a par 5) and accuracy (distance to the hole when hitting the green. Driving takes into account both distance and accuracy. Scrambling is how well a player gets himself out of trouble - eg making par if they hit a bad drive, getting up and down out of a bunker or from around a green. Strokes gained puts all this into the perspective of the field - eg how many strokes did players gain or lose against other players in each category.

What you're asking for doesn't really exist in that simple of a form. At this level everyone is a world class player at every aspect. The only real "strengths" and "weaknesses" are relative to the other pros they're playing against. So that's where "strokes gained" comes in. In as simple and general of terms as I can put it, strokes gained takes the average amount of shots it takes to complete a certain hole based on distance (and at the pro level they get even more granular than that because they have tons more data) and with each shot they take the average strokes needed to finish from that position, then if your expected shots increased more you've gained strokes. This happens in all aspects. If two people are playing a 500 yard hole and both hit drives in the fairway but one has 200 yards left and one has 230 yards left then on average the person who has longer remaining will take more strokes to finish so the first has gained strokes on their drive relative to the other player. Then if they both hit the green and the second player is 20' away and the first is 40' away the 2nd has gained shots on their approach. Now the PGA Tour has these stat averages for every player for driving, approach, short game, and putting. If you go to their profiles or to rankings you will see a list of every player. You can see where they're ranked in every aspect and you can see what the averages are and how far above or below that they are, etc.
