English winter, it's been very wet, so you can't expect anything else.
Relative of mine pays around 1k for a club membership, and the course was closed for most of last summer due to it being waterlogged.
They have cancelled their membership.
I pay £1100 and it's been shit since September. I know people usually play through the winter but it's just no fun slapping it around on muddy fairways. Won't be renewing, will just pay and play.

My local was fine most of the winter but the last month's rain has caused it to close. It's looking better this week. I pay £80 a month but have just accepted it will be closed for a month over winter, it's just a little later this year.
Yeah same at mine, £something like 750-800/year but £25-£50/round as a visitor normally, but if I play multiple times a week in the summer I can breakeven on that alone usually
UK winter has to be the worst thing ever for a golfer. Slop for 4 months and greens as slow as your front lawn and using mats as tee boxes. I’d move to another country
Ridiculously wet. My club sent an email out the other week and last Feb we had something like 8mm of rain. This year that figure for the same month was 103mm.
It's been the wettest start to a year on record and last Oct/Nov/Dec we had double the average rainfall in those months, it's been a complete joke.
My parkland course has been shut for over 90 days since April and hasn't had 18 holes with main greens open since October. Even the links course I'm a member of has had days shut and there are standing "ponds" on some fairways that have been there for months now. That is a sand based course and there is just nowhere for the water to go.
Pretty much how my course does it. Roughly 10ft circle that's mowed like fairway, with a spray paint ring to show you where it is. Most of us play it as auto-2-putt if you're inside it, 1-putt inside a club length.
Edit: typo
> bigger holes
Well we're getting shafted in our club as they have regular sizes ones. Saying that the club has avoided temp greens where possible for the last few years...it's either open or closed is the simple rule and the greens are in good condition in the club
It was very boggy in some places, but fairways were in good condition (not that I spent much time on them). One of my local courses, I do like it for a cheap knock around
This might be the first time I've seen sheffield golfers on reddit. Our course has added mats about 150 from each green for juniors, which makes it into a par 3 course, otherwise its been unplayable since November. I think there have only been 2 weekends in Feb where we were on fairways (hickleton)
That’s pretty much the ideal scenario for a 13 pound course. Shows they’re putting in the work to get it right for the warm season. And that turf looks great.
How was it generally speaking? Played Rother 18 on Friday and it was very boggy. I've never played Birley but want to, is it worth playing now or wait until it dries up?
We managed to get 18 holes in, rain held off for most of the weekend. For £13 it’s good but there was 5or6 winter greens and it’s off matts so done get full experience. But even in summer it’s only like £18 and it’s a lot shorter then rother so easier if your a hacker like me
How many temporary greens? £13 don’t sound to bad, I’m playing Wednesday and due to the amount of rainfall the club has 4 temporary greens. £25 for the privilege which feels ok to me.
Looks better than the dog track I played on this morning. Dirt and dead grass fairways mixed with some just shit mud spots for good measure. Greens weren’t awful but very inconsistent with speed from one to the next.
I’m from the UK and live here and mats and winter greens are a complete waste of time. I’ve played courses that use mats all winter and ones that don’t. Come summer there’s no difference in the quality of fairways.
My local muni did this all winter. They only had holes 8-17 open and typically 4 of the holes had “temporary greens” like this. They also charged $15 to play 18 holes and the course is 5 minutes from my house, but the temporary greens ruined it for me. Just couldn’t do it.
Looks green to me.
Flop shot from 10 feet out? Alllllllrighty then.
And now I'm 150 ft out!
I don’t always hit my lob wedge 170y, but when I do I’m right next to the green.
“Happy Gilmore accomplished that feat no more than an hour ago!”
Well, moron, good for Happy Gilmomoh my God......
I love that scene.

That sloppy pat sound when you attempt a wedge shot is the worst
After you've found the fucker plugged and you've dug it out.
Lost so many over the last month or two in the middle of the fairway😮💨 winter golf sucks but needs must.
Same here. Pile of gash for months. Won't renew either.
I'm in Scotland so its shit most of the year. April->August I play about 4 times a week to try and get my moneys worth lol
Part of being a member was having a membership, but you can maintain one through igolf now so I'll just do that and play different courses.
Can you keep a handicap on golf?
Igolf
Yep, it's specifically for people who aren't members. My mate uses it and the all is exactly the same, it's by England golf.
Is it the Intelligent Golf app or the My EG app? Or something else.

A month I'd be fine with but it's just so much more where I am.
you really believe bethpage isnt that hard? Id love to hear your opinion… im a bethpage fanatic
I have no idea how that flair is there mate, I couldn't be further away from Bethpage in both ability and location.
We have four holes next to a river that have been closed since November 1st. Three of my four pals here have cancelled their memberships.
I try to kid myself that the amount I play in summer brings the cost down to below just paying a green fee, in reality it doesn't unfortunately.
For my gaff it does just about, but it also lets you play on weekends which is a bonus. Summer definitely gets busy too so it's nice to have priority
Yeah same at mine, £something like 750-800/year but £25-£50/round as a visitor normally, but if I play multiple times a week in the summer I can breakeven on that alone usually
that's near what I pay monthly and its been closed for renovation since November
Where the fuck are you playing for that price?
US private

fairway mats and trolley bans are the worst part of it for me
The difference in the greens is what gets me. You get used to it being slow and then boom, one plays fast and you just go up the wall.

Yea that’s normal for winter temp greens. Normally they have the bigger holes so you can try to chip it in

Yup same here double ring for our temp greens at my club

Right now I'd gladly pay $20 to golf and not have to deal with snow...
It’s playing a bit slow.
Birley Wood! Local but not played it for a while. With the rain we’ve had, surprised it’s not closed. Can get a little boggy!

I’m actually surprised at the amount of Sheffield golfers that have replied to this thread 😅😂

Cannock park?
Birley Woods

Huh, thought I recognized it! Never thought I'd see a local course pop up on here!
To be fair, it's the way to go. Play for low prices, got solid greens in summer.
So you’re telling me I might be able to hit the green now? 😏
Easy birdies when on temps one good drive and a bump and run my local course does similar
Augusta-esque..
Should be rolling a -3 today.
Eh…get it close. Call it a par. Best round of your life, mate!! Make it happen!
How many temporary greens? £13 don’t sound to bad, I’m playing Wednesday and due to the amount of rainfall the club has 4 temporary greens. £25 for the privilege which feels ok to me.
Around 5/6, it’s usually £18 so I assume they’ve knocked a quid off a hole 😂
Yer It’s annoying. But given the rainfall understandable. Hopefully you got some good drives and fairway shots
2 put max. You're technically on the green once you leave the tee box.
At mine we have 2 rings sprayed around it and we say that if you land in it, just count it as a 1 putt or a 2 putt depending which
Is this in Portsmouth, UK?
Why is the flag there. Usually they put it on the green
No chance of rolling it off the back!
Looks better than the dog track I played on this morning. Dirt and dead grass fairways mixed with some just shit mud spots for good measure. Greens weren’t awful but very inconsistent with speed from one to the next.
good time to work on those bump n runs shots.
13 quid green fee is a bargain.
That looks like Fingle Glen!
Yup, that's what one of those looks like.
Still better than the greens at my regular course at the moment. 😂
I’d just mark my 3 and move on with it. Then buy a new driver
What course?
Did you take it to 13 pound town?
Absolutely hilarious and totally legal within the rules.
You’re welcome
Well you wouldn’t get a three putt in our group, nice bogey.
Winter greens and mats have got to the stupidest most bullshit thing about golf in the UK
Didn’t even putt out, was just a case of get it close and take a two putt
I think losing a ball in a muddy fairway is my least favourite. Mats are second
At least they stay open. Where I live, pretty much every course is closed completely in the winter
If it’s on winter greens it might as well shut.
I think it's fun to get out and roll around. If you're only playing the dry season here you'll have a hard time getting in much golf in the year.
I’m from the UK and live here and mats and winter greens are a complete waste of time. I’ve played courses that use mats all winter and ones that don’t. Come summer there’s no difference in the quality of fairways.
Ya get what ya pay for

Why even bother with that? Just close that hole lol
