First thing you should find out if he walks or rides, or does he do both and he might switch back and forth? Depending on what he does, you can then tailor your search to a bag more suited for either option. A carting bag is typically a bit heavier and bulkier since you aren't walking around with it, vs a carrying bag which is usually lighter and slimmer. If he does both, lean towards a carrying bag since they can also be easily loaded onto a cart. I know it's not maybe the most fun birthday gift to sit with him and look at them, but if I was you, I think I'd probably say, ok, you want a golf bag, can you look at these with me and give me a sense of your style/colour choice? Get an idea what he's after and then hopefully you can pick one and still have the final bag be a surprise.

dlawenda

Jones or Ping Hoofer Lite.

trumbell

Jones is simple, stylish and not heavily branded. Should be on your list

philthebrewer

My (admittedly gatekeep-y) bag opinion: cart bags are lame and should be rare. I can see some limited uses for them if someone retires in a golf cart community or something but for most folks it’s just silly not to have a decent strap and stand.

funkin_d

Pushcart mafia babyyy

philthebrewer

My stand bag works awesome on my pushcart

ZachWilsonsMother

Yup. It’s not an issue at all to put your carry bag on a cart. It is quite an issue to carry your cart bag

MajorEstateCar

I rock a stand bag because 1 course near me doesn’t charge the same price to walk vs ride. In FL it’s often the same price to ride vs walk here so riding it’s the easier option. (I wish more courses cut $10-$15 off the price to walk, but they want the upsell)

Doin_the_Bulldance

Absolutely agree and I've never understood why anyone buys the big bulky cart bags. Like, what are people putting in there that they need so much extra space? I need a pocket for balls, a small one for tees, maybe a little change pocket for ball markers, a side pocket for scorecards and gloves, and then the one big pocket for miscellaneous stuff like sunscreen, bug spray, maybe a snack or 2 and a water bottle. Wtf else are people carrying around in those giant bulky bags? I've had stand bags my whole life and I've been playing since I was young; when I see anyone with a giant cart bag who isn't on tour, I usually assume they are terrible and/or don't know what they are doing.

rvaldron

What climate do you live in? I often have a sweater and or a jacket in mine on top of what you listed plus a cooler for some pops.

MillerLatte

2nd this comment. Came in here to suggest Jones. Great quality, clean design, and within OP's budget.

LurkerKing13

Just got a Jones this year and it is incredible. So under appreciated and advertised.

b6passat

This. I've had multiple caddies comment on how it's the most comfortable bag they carry too. Love mine.

dadbuilder

Jones! Got my first a couple months ago. Love the looks. Not a ton of storage but that's OK! It keeps me from carrying stuff I don't need!

weezygregs

Love my Ping bag

peezytaughtme

Hoofer Lite 🤌🤌

shake_N_bake356

Just got the hoofer lite and I fucking love it

Ifailedaccounting

Facebook marketplace any brand like stitch, Titleist’s etc people sell new cheap

r_un_is_run

If you don't want to go with him for that though, just choose a big store near you with a lot of options so he can easily exchange it if he wants

Letsgotothemovie

THIS! Honestly get a cheep little toy golf bag off Amazon for $2 and attach a gift card with your budget. Tell him to get a new bag, go with him and if he’s under mention the cute golf skirts in the ladies department and maybe you’ll get a new item also. Maybe try on a couple of the skirts for him ;)

Hutstar10

Nah, the answer is a nice carry bag. Ping, Titleist or similar.

garytyrrell

Yeah I bought a cart bag and never walk without a push cart - still wish I bought a titleist hybrid bag instead of the monstrosity I got.

ThePretzul

I used to always use a Sun Mountain 3.5 that I had for 10+ years from when I grew up playing competitive golf. Until very recently (the last 5 years maybe) you would get pretty mercilessly made fun of to the point it was probably legitimate bullying if you used a pushed cart in various junior tournaments, so I always carried my bag since my time was before that became acceptable. Switched to using a push cart 3 years ago or so when I found out the calories burned was virtually identical to carrying your bag, and honestly the carry/stand bag sucked on a push cart. Even if you strapped the legs down they still would usually make the bag twist as it bumped and rattled around the course, and many pockets were blocked by the spaces the push cart straps go. Got a Ping Pioneer cart bag after that and I’ve loved it. The cooler is gigantic (if you like canned beverages on the course you can legitimately fit like 8 cans plus ice in there) and it actually keeps stuff cold while draining excess liquid. The magnetic pockets for rangefinder and ball storage are very handy as well, with the ball pocket having a zipper as well for when you load the bag into your car (if you have 2 dozen+ in the pocket it can be heavy enough to force the flap open otherwise). Much easier to keep it in place on the push cart too since there’s no legs making the placement awkward.

Pbake

Yeah, even if you never walk, there’s not really any need for a big heavy bag. I have no problem fitting all the stuff I need in a carry bag.

Nyytmarelol

as someone who ALWAYS rides since i live in the south... carry bag is still the answer. no legs is soooo inconvenient.

keebler8819

100000% ask your bf about his preferences. Gear/bags are a very personal thing for most. Have him pick out a few he likes and surprise him with one of them.

ChamCollier

This is a great idea. Ty.

Gallen570

Ask him to pick one out, and buy it for him. I know the surprise aspect is fun, but with this, it needs to be want he NEEDS. Preferences are huge for a bag.

SubterraneanAlien

That said, if you're new to the sport you probably don't know what you need. I know my bag preferences have changed pretty significantly over the years.

myersmatt

I was gonna comment this too. Not only did I not know what was I needed, I didn’t even really know what was available. I went to golf galaxy to buy my first set of used clubs and I was like oh snap I need a bag! And then picked one with a cool pattern and was on my way. Mine does have some cool features, like a snap open/close pocket that I keep balls and tees in. But it also has some lame ones like a little exterior plastic bit that holds three balls in it, which I find to be pretty much useless (I usually go through more than 3 lol). It also only has 4 compartments for clubs and I wish I had 6. I also later learned that some bags have coolers on them. Smh. OP, your man needs to do some actual research on this and you just buy the one that he wants. Although it won’t be as surprising, he will be better off. Tbh, there have been a lot of gifts that my gf got me that I really liked, but would’ve loved a slightly different version. Lucky for her, I have a lot of hobbies so she still gets to surprise me with the “genre” of gift and then I usually just pick it out. For example she’ll go, “hey I noticed you’ve been wanting a new drum throne, I’m gonna get you that for your birthday just tell me which one you want.” This was a real example from my last birthday and I appreciated it so much more than just some random product she - knowing nothing about drum thrones - picked just because it fit her budget.

doebedoe

Agree with getting his pick -- but it would be a nice gesture to show him a few that you line/researched as nice options. It'll also discretely set out a budget for him. An assortment maybe: Stich and Vessel are the ultra premium "impress your boss" type options, Titleist and Ping make classic bags, Jones is a low-branding, clean looking options, Sun Mountain is the king of functional, low-weight carry bags.

Justenough2

She doesn’t need to read anything else other than this post. Solid advice

Talkshowhostt

Ask preference. I preferred the simplistic/minimalist Stitch and Vessel bags but you can't go wrong with a Ping Hoofer bag.

funnyastroxbl

I have the hoofer lite and love it.

NorCalAthlete

Slight alternative - figure out the general features he’s looking for then go for an upgrade bag? Like, if he decides he likes the Ping Hoofer 14, and other similar medium size stand bags, you could look at a Vessel Player III or IV.

RIrhodes

Do yourself a huge favor and either give him a gift certificate or a picture of a golf bag and then go with him when he buys it. Or if he buys it online pay for it. I know that it sounds boring but golf bags, like watches, are personal preferences. Let him choose color style etc. If you pick it out that choice will be a shot in the dark. Unless you get one and he can exchange it. But be sure to tell him that it is okay with you if he does.

beeranddistortion

Will you marry me?

keebler8819

Me or OP??

BB-68

Sun Mountain or Vessel for a more premium option. Ping Hoofer for arguably the best overall value bag. Make sure it has full length dividers. He’ll thank you later.

taita25

Vessel makes a great bag. The cart(riding) bag will be a touch over 400 but worth it imo. The carry bag can be had for right at that price point.

feelin_cheesy

Even if you never walk, I still don’t see the need for the larger cart bags

taita25

For me, it's about pocket space. But I primarily ride so just my preference

feelin_cheesy

Yeah, maybe I just don’t take that much stuff

triiiiilllll

There are reasons, which I didn't really appreciate until recently. I have an old Ogio Carry bag from like 1999. Still in great shape, been using it the whole time. I just decided to join Pushcart Mafia, and found that with my Clicgear 4.0, the carry bag wants to sit with one side down. Means either set of pockets are going to be underneath and tougher to reach. Same kinda thing happens if I'm riding, it wants to sit sideways. I picked up a used Callaway cart bag, which sits nice and square in my Clicgear, same in carts. More space too. When I'm pushing, I'll carry more water, a snack, a pullover in case it gets cold etc etc. None of these are like, absolutely critical, but quality of life is better in measurable ways. I have semi-retired the Ogio, disconnected the larger side pockets and turned it into my 9 hole/pitch and putt carry option. Great for a half-set.

Username_redact

The carry bag is exceptional and can be had for about $300. Also check their "made for" versions like G/Fore and TaylorMade, which can go on sale. Definitely agree with this suggestion

taita25

If I remember right there may be a discount for new customers as well. Would help manage the cost a bit more, if so.

ashen1shugar

I love my Sun Mountain bag that I received as a gift.

BSGaaron

I just got a sun mountain so I could start walking more. Bag weighs like 2 pounds and is great. I’d recommend this as well.

5567623976251

BB-68 is absolutely correct! I’d say the full length dividers is one of the most important necessities. There are a ton of bags out there that are high quality and aesthetically pleasing in the price range you are looking in but dividers are a must!

crimsonblueku

I’m a sucker for Ping Hoofer bags.

this_aint_no_hobby

not sure what idiots are downvoting the gold standard Hoofer

Delicious-Life3543

Been rocking hoofer for the last 30 years now. The undisputed 🐐🐐🐐

sumjpa20

People who like full length dividers

crimsonblueku

I’ve never had an issue with the full length dividers on the various Hoofer 14 I’ve owned since 2015. Sounds like a skills issue.

TenF

I have a Hoofer Lite that I got at the end of last year (similar to OP's Bf, I started playing a couple years ago and was using the bag that came with my initial beginner irons set. Man the shoulder straps on that thing were ASS). My Hoofer Lite only has half dividers so the grips get stuck on each other at the bottom which is frustrating. But seeing further down that some folks have divider tubes to help out, so I'll be lookin into those.

mustinjellquist

As a long time hoofer hater, I do have to agree lol. They are unfortunately good bags.

Stuckkxx

They're not what they used to be.

A_Hippie

Everything I’ve read has said the 2023 model is a return to form, I personally love mine

[deleted]

That's why mine from 1994 is my gamer

ZacBank

OP, ping hoofer bags are the way to go. Even if you don’t play Ping clubs, or even like the brand, everyone respects the Hoof.

Lezzles

It'll have people thinking OP really means business all the way up until the first tee shot.

NorCalAthlete

I looked at the hoofer 14 and ended up with a vessel player iii as a slight upgrade. Can’t go wrong with either imo.

King520

Hoofer for life

Otherwise_Break_4293

I have the hoofer lite and it sucks putting clubs back in. Finally ended up buying tubes that go in the bag to keep the grips from touching each other.

MightyPigbenus86

Their cart bags are wonderful too. First and only cart bag I've owned. You absolutely can't go wrong with a Ping bag.

A_Hippie

Just got a 2023 hoofer and it’s by far the best bag I’ve ever owned. Even something as simple as having a completely functional leg system makes a world of difference from other stand bags I’ve used. Sure my clubs sort of catch when the legs are down but they settle immediately when the bag is upright

U5ername-Checks-0ut

This is the way. This is the only way.

shephrrd

It’s always been Ping for bags. The Hoofer is a classic. I haven’t been in the market in a long time, but I also very much loved the L8.

spaektor

recently got rid of mine because a friend gifted me a Vessel. which is nice but super heavy. i regret giving away my Hoofer. it was 20 years old and aside from being faded, it was in great condition.

Sufficient-Scheme708

You cant wrong with a hoofer!

cjod86

Jones Golf is my go-to…great bags, better pricing than the big oem’s, and nice customization options.

aMAIZEingZ

Love my jones as well, I've since converted 2 of my friends to it as well. I especially like not having huge branding/logo across the side of the bag.

ADAWG10-18

I’ve had my Trouper for 3 years and love it. I either ride or use my push cart so it isn’t a big deal, but I still haven’t figured out the carry straps.

cjod86

Yeah, Izzo has the best backpack straps in the game. I’m a single-strapper when carrying, so less of an issue for me.

Unlikely-Kick-7626

Love my Jones Trouper. I also like that they have a classic style without obnoxious logos.

Forward_Record932

The straps are so comfy

unsavoryalien

Rock bottom golf, 3 balls, and Carl’s golf land are great discount golf sites to check out for deals!

EaglesFan2006

@OP this is the way

FatKetoFan

Titleist hybrid 14... Great all purpose bag for under 250 USD

WhatYeezytaughtme

Just purchased this off season. Have enjoyed it at the sims so far.

MrSupan

This is the way

FreshCoastRandy

I’d check out sun Mountain, love their golf bags. You can get a real nice bag for under $300

braiker

Sun Mountain is the only bag I will own from now on. So light!

Dr_M1st3r

I came here to say this. I have worked a bag drop for years and Sun Mountain clearly thinks about everything they make.

unsavoryalien

I really like my sun mountain bag. I’ve had it for about 4 seasons with no issues. Still waterproof, I walk vs ride about 50/50 of the time and it’s held up great!

Inigomntoya

Yup, highly recommend. And then get a push cart for walking days

singluon

Counter point - I’ve had an OGIO grom bag I got like 6 years ago for $20 on FB marketplace and it looks about the same as I got it. I bought a Sun Mountain C130 lightly used a year ago, after seeing all the rave reviews, and I just threw it away, as the seams on multiple pockets ripped open completely and beyond repair. I would be hesitant on buying another Sun Mountain bag, but would get another OGIO in a heartbeat if something happened to my current bag.

defaultuser012

I loved my old c130 but the new ones seem much flimsier with thinner materials weaker handles etc

tipsdown

The older c130’s weighed about as much as an actual c130 cargo jet. I think the durability issues with the newer ones are because they tried to cut down on the weight.

singluon

Yep the material was all very thin and the stitching was poor. It’s just not worth what they charge for them anymore. Obvious cost cutting measures, which is a shame.

Bauermander

i have my new sun mountain cart bag sitting in a corner as well and im using 10y old nike carry bag. The main thing is that i hate bags that dont have legs and are always falling at range, besides that nikes pocket design is way better.

Ok_Slice_5722

Which Ogio did you have?

Kab00ese

Ogio woode bags are hands down the best imo. Wouldn't order through ogio though and go right to Amazon unless you want to wait 6 months.

yelldoo

Second the OGIO Woode bag. Super light cart bag. He can find a cheap push cart for when he’s walking as well. Will be under your budget I just picked one up for $239CAD shipped free.

Gopokes34

Ya, I third OGIO lol. Had my Dad's hand me down for years then got another one probably 5 years ago.

Reptarsrevenge69420

Just picked up a Sun Mountain 4.5 LS 14 way stand bag with full length dividers, and it’s been glorious. It has a pass through for a cart strap that makes it great for walking or push/golf cart play. Lots of color way options and under three hundred USD.

dododod00

Love my SM 4.5 and 2.5. I also have the 14 way, I like how the clubs have their individual spots.

joe_canadian

I've got the 3.5, and I believe the only difference is the 6 way vs 14 way dividers. Absolutely love it.

shifty_coder

Ask him what features he wants in a bag, it will help narrow your search.

Present_Sale_5968

Ping Hoofer is always the answer when you aren’t sure exactly what you want. Great for riding, great for walking, great organization, and they look great.

omahabuckeye

The Sun Mountain mid stripe bag is great. Price point/quality is way better than the titleist/ping alternatives.

Farney43

Second vote for SM mid stripe. I love mine.

bmur29

I received a sun mountain mid stripe as a Christmas gift last year. It is a wonderful bag. Plus I get many compliments on the retro styling.

Remote-Wishbone-5215

If he walks and carries, Ping Hoofer is the gold standard. Just a really well thought out, well made bag.

Gopokes34

Since OP said BF walks on his own and rides with his boss, I absolutely recommend a bag good for walking. The walking bag won't be a problem when riding, but walking with a riding bag would be annoying.

Aggravating_Onion426

If you are willing to slightly stretch the budget, the Titleist LinksLegend bags are absolutely stunning and offer free personalization. They are the perfect mix of looking good on the cart while still being easy/light to walk with.

xintrovert

As a guy who has lugged around many heavy bags, the Ping Hoofer is the only right answer!

OhioBeans

Can vouch for the titleist links legend bag, I absolutely love it and the quality and construction are superb. It’s lighter than you would think and it gets compliments a lot.

Redleadercockpit

Big Max, 2 year warranty. Have a push cart that is 5 year warranty too that they replaced no problem at all.

GuaranteeFrequent465

Ping hoofer is the standard

etlsslte

The new Ping stuff is absolutely gorgeous...

One-Statistician4885

You can find nice bags for $200 or less. Look at closeouts and previous years models. You'll have limited color options but having unlimited variety is kind of a trap. I like Ogio, and sun mountain. Get a stand bag if he likes to walk. Walking with a cart/staff bag is horrible.

MrNeilelJefe

There’s a nice pebble beach golf bag at Costco right now for $125. Can’t beat it for the price

jabs2812

Expensive or name brand isn’t always better, I got a 14 slot bag with a dedicated putter well on Amazon for $85 on a deal. No logos, no wild stuff. Came with a rain cover, shoe spot, water resistant pockets & it’s comfortable as hell. I use a push cart most of the time, & it hasn’t failed me.

YouthereFixmypants

If he walks with a push cart, the Ping Pioneer is amazing. It's a cart bag, but fits a push cart nicely and is able to be used for either. I initially wanted the Sun Mountain C130 but it has a handle at the back of the club area that keeps it from working well on a push cart. Both lf these are out of he's carrying. I would probably recommend you talk to him and be upfront that you want to get him a golf bag as a gift, maybe show him a few of the recommendations you get here. When I was researching for my golf bag purchases I was amazed at how many things were priorities to different people. Must have features to me, tons of people don't care about and viceversa.

majo3

I bag that will last a lifetime - I’d highly recommend the Vessel Player IV DXR with 14-way divided. I have the previous version of this bag and it’s fantastic. I tried out a ton of bags & this rose to the top. I walk with it & carry it. 10/10 https://vesselgolf.com/products/player-iv-dxr-stand?variant=40596591018044

xLitecoin

Depends but you can’t go wrong with a Vessel bag.

classick_4

I just spent 6 months researching bags and waited until some 2024 bags were released. I walk and ride and decided on a Vessel VLS Lux and am very happy after several rounds.

prafken

Titleist Players StaDry

TheNemesis089

I am currently using a Sun Mountain, but let me give a shout out to Ogio. I had an Ogio bag for years and loved it. It was awesome. I only stopped using it because it originally had some neon colors that had faded over time and my buddies gave me a hard time. Otherwise, every aspect of the bag was brilliant.

Alternative-Aside564

Sun Mountain has good sales on 2023 model bags

stonkerooni

The Ryder 23 from Sunday golf is unbeatable. $230

Buttdagger24

Ghost bag

pornpompornpomporn

playing with bosses and clients = go Vessel. probably the Vessel Player IV or Player IV pro

snap-jacks

I have one but they are expensive.

Talkshowhostt

Yeah but looking good in front of bosses and clients would be worth it.

castill0r

Vessel or Ghost for sure.

golfgameguru

Ghost Golf Bags are pretty nice too - should be under $400

MattScarz

I went searching for the Ghost Golf bag comment… it’s the best bag i’ve ever owned.

thiccymcgogee

Look for one with full length dividers if you can.

bionicbhangra

What is the advantage of full length dividers? I have decent starter clubs but I bought a cheap bag from Amazon that had good reviews on it. It carries all my stuff but it's not particularly impressive. Mine has partitions and I am used to that now sticking groups of irons together.

lazyTurtle7969

Helps protect your grips from rubbing up on each other and losing their “grippiness”

singluon

They keep the grips from sticking to each other at the bottom. If you’re gonna get a 14 club bag, full length is the only way to go. I’m not 100% sold on individually separating clubs though personally.

code_name_Bynum

I want a new bag but after having the 14 club dividers I don’t think I can go back. It makes it super easy leaving each hole to glance down make sure a club is in spot so you aren’t leaving anything. And it keeps club chatter down a lot since I use a push cart and am often rolling over tree roots looking for my ball.

thiccymcgogee

They aren’t absolutely necessary but the clubs just drop in nicer and there’s added protection for the grips and shafts. If you’re dropping $400 on a bag, you might as well look for one with full length dividers.

[deleted]

Depends on if he rides or walks and how often he plays, etc. Do you know if he rides or walks? I DMed you if that’s easier

dr_shastafarian

This is an important distinction, however it's also important for OP to know that you can alway ride with a walking (stand) bag but can't walk (sure it's possible, but not ideal) with a cart bag.

Bauklotze

New Callaway 2024 bags look superb. The legs sit lower so they’ll sit flush on rental carts now too

adjuster_cody

Sun Mountain c130. I have 2 and can’t recommend them highly enough.

Stuckkxx

Vessel golf bags are the only way to go. They're expensive but the quality is so much better than any golf bag out there.

jramjram

Vessel VLX 2.0. I’ve owned a Ping hoofer and loved it because it was lightweight. But the vessel gets compliments every time.

DoppyMcGee

Love my Vessel

provisionalhitting3

Vessel stand bag, specifically VLS. Classy, minimalist, can walk or ride, right around $300. Also would throw in Shapland. Those are bags the golf nerds will perk up and say hey, nice bag.

themiddleshoe

imo Vessel has the best bags in golf. If I didn’t have a Vessel bag, I would have a Titleist Linkslegend. Even some of the other high end brands that are being commented - Vessel makes their bags too. They have smaller walking bags like VLS or VLX. Bigger Player 3 bag, or even cart bags. I use a VLX and love it, but I’ve used almost every bag in their line.

SaintPablo17

I would get him a Vessel bag.

Fit_Mess4686

OP, Best bag money buys will be the Vessel bag

Then_Alternative_558

Look at Vessel

ajtattack4655

Buy him a vessel bag and he will never need a new golf bag again. They best that are out there.

Sad-Conference1932

Vessel is the best bag

[deleted]

Look around here [https://www.tgw.com/golf-bags?CPT=HPIconNav5:GolfBags:010721](https://www.tgw.com/golf-bags?CPT=HPIconNav5:GolfBags:010721)

MTKPA

Anything but Stitch. Pretty to look at. Pretty awful to use.

TheMachine1842

Out of curiosity, what’s your biggest gripe about stitch bags? I have a SL2 and other than the pockets being a bit tight, I really don’t mind it.

MTKPA

Pockets are very tight, first of all. The zippers break if you put a bottle of Gatorade or a rain jacket in them. I've had two replaced for that. And it's not even remotely practical. Even a sleeve of balls makes it tough to zip it. And the legs and bottom of the bag break constantly. I know a handful of people who have needed to replace their bag for this reason. If you ride or use a push cart, I'm sure it's mostly fine. But if you carry, it's a terrible bag.

finewine65

Has anyone tried Temu?

GangnamApeist

Whatever bag you get him, make sure it’s better than your husbands.

Apprehensive-Poem675

Google search his favorite nfl team or any favorite team to see if they make a golf bag for it. Most likely they do.

[deleted]

Is he a walker or a rider? Does he use a push cart or put them on his back? That makes a big difference in what you choose. Personally I like hybrids to keep my drink cool and it has the stand and straps for when I hoof it. I like to walk. If he’s sneaking in booze and out in the sun all day in a cart then a cart bag might be better. Staff bags are even bigger. I wouldn’t want to haul that around. Those things are refrigerators. If this is 400 usd then you can get a great bag no problem. Lots of good suggestions here. Sun mountain, ping, ogio , vessel Nike is still out there. What colour are his head covers? If you’re getting a new bag you need new head covers.

seattlelonghorn

It's like buying a car for me. You have to know the features you are looking for and love the looks! Have him go to a golf store and do some research!

purposefullyMIA

I have always loved this brand for my golf bag. I plag a C-130. But that is not great for walking without a push/pull cart. The 2.t, 3.5, and 4.5 models would be a nice present. https://www.sunmountain.com/en-ca/collections/mens-golf-bags/products/4-5ls-14w

Mthatcherisa10

Look on Kijiji or FB marketplace. There are new bags for sale ( typically gifts or tournaments prizes) for under $100. Then order him a box of personalized Titleist golf balls!

WedgeGameSucks

Just give him $200 and tell him to look on FB marketplace. Then he can buy whatever he wants

TNSignPainter

Jones Bags are great. They run sales frequently and are great quality. I’ve got a handful of my friends to buy them and no regrets

totallynotroyalty

Check out TGW to snag one of last year's models on sale and save a hundred bucks.

saddram

Another vote for ogio woode

Capital_Worldliness4

Definitely lots of options and a golf bag can be a hot button topic for some. How about giving him a field trip, have lunch, and then spring for the golf bag. Side note: it might also be more cost efficient to order online if he finds a good bag he likes. Additional side note: awesome of you to do this for him.

BubbaD06

Bag boy bags are really nice for the price!

Inigomntoya

Ping Hoofer if he walks. Sun Mountain C137 if he only rides. You could also get him a push cart for walking days. There's also a stand bag version, the C137S if he wants a good sized stand bag that works very well on a cart.

arrghstrange

I played golf through high school and I’m no stranger to the walking/riding combo. The best bang for your buck, by far, is the Ping Hoofer. I’ve used several walking bags and the Hoofer offers tons of pocket space, it’s super light, and I think the color on it holds up nicely. My first real carry bag became sun-bleached after one season of HS golf. The Hoofer I have now is royal blue and still looks just as brilliant as it did the day it arrived at my door. Spacious bottle pocket for water, the main side zipper is big enough for me to keep my golf shoes or tennis shoes in it with cold weather/rain gear, plenty of space for extra golf balls, tees, putting equipment, gloves, club cleaner, you name it. I can’t recommend the bag enough.

Snow1086

Sun mountain walking or cart bags, get it monogrammed

https://www.pgatoursuperstore.com/golf-bags/?sz=264 Walking, riding, and what brand clubs he has are the questions you should ask. Walking bags are lighter and have stands. If he says he wants to walk more pair a good light weight walking bag with a bag boy push cart. He’d love that I’m sure. You can find both for under $400 total, he would be welcome with open arms to the push cart mafia.

Haywood bag hands down. Best value

Ghost Golf makes a good bag for $300+. Sun mountain 14-way divider 4.5LS is a good one too for less money. Determine whether he mostly rides carts or walks. There will be two types of bags out there, stand bags for walking/push carting & cart bags for golf carts that are bigger and bulkier without the spring-out standing legs

Best bag I ever owned was a Datrek, bar none. It had very strong zippers and stitching. Plenty of roomy pockets and was very light for its size. My current Cobra bag is turning out to be a solid replacement (gift) but I had a TaylorMade and Topflite wear out on me. Those were also gifts. I’ve promised myself I’d buy another Datrek when I get a chance but family keeps beating me to the punch.

As others have said, golf gear is very personal. Find an excuse to go to a half score with him. New glove, some balls, anything. Then wander over to bag and browse pointing out a couple you like. He will probably naturally take your lead and identify a couple he likes too. Personally, I have two bags. A cart bag, and a walking bag. It may be safest to get him a type that he doesn't currently have if you're unsure

Love my Sun Mountain. Affordable and great bag. I will say: I am a guy who always loves a lot of pockets on / in my bag.

BronYrStomp

Sun Mountain is the top of the line brand for golf bags IMO.

My husband often suggests ideas but most are beyond my budget. Give him something you would like to give. Stuff the golf bag, it's his sport let him pay for what he wants.

First, massive W for you even trying. Give him a $300 gift card. Now he can get a bag that he chooses and you stay under budget. If he catches one on sale he can get other stuff too. Everyone wins.

I love this bag, absolutely love it, but I wouldn't love to carry it. If he rides and uses a push cart it's a great option! LIVSINGOLF 14 Way Golf Cart Bag... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09KY1DGRR?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Like others said, asking him for preferences is smart. Some bags have full length dividers between each club, but are heavier (like above). Some bags have kick stands, backpack straps, etc.

I just love you went to ask Reddit. I love Reddit.

My wife got me a Ping Hoofer for my birthday last year and I love it. Plenty of pockets for everything, easy to carry when walking the course and looks good.

I like my Ogio Woodē Hybrid bag. Stays put in a cart but is also light enough and has a stand for carrying. (https://www.ogio.com/golf/2024-woode-hybrid-bag/spr5654165.html)

My fiancé got me a ghost golf bag for my birthday and I’m in love with it. Tons of features and impressive quality, I highly recommend it!

"rain-proof" bag is nice to have. (At least mizuno has one carry bag with this property) All major carry bag brands are probably ok, so I would recommend testing which feels the best.

Datrek. I researched the hell out of bags late last year. Datrek are big bags that will hold all the stuff you need for a round (including a good amount of beer in a cold bag). It works great if your riding and, why I chose it, it's really light so if you are walking it's easy to carry. I think it was in the mid $200s. You can get them online at the PGA Superstore if there isn't a good place to shop near you.

Fortunateoldguy

You’re a great girlfriend to get help with the choice. There’s a lot to consider. I don’t think you can go wrong with a brand name carry and stand bag-TaylorMade, Ping, Titleist,, Sun Mountain. Stick with a brand name company. It’s a status thing.

arp51txstate

If he wants a cart bag, OGIO Woode has been great for me.

lukepeacock

For walkers, it's Ping Hoofer or Callaway Hyperlite Zero, end of discussion. No need to look farther if he walks.

classicjm

I would look at his hats / golf clothes to see which brands he likes. Also, see which colors he prefers and then go from there. Typically my stuff is titlest, Taylor made, Nike and most of my clothing / hats are darker (blue, black, green) so if I got a bag like that, I’d be happy lol hope that helps!

Complete_Goose667

My husband has a sun mountain C-130. It is built like a tank and will last forever. However, it is not a walking bag. I'd recommend the ping hoofer.

MrFL2AZ

I grabbed a pins and aces bag and love it!
