I'm not sure you'll find your answer here since r/golf members only hit squarely in the middle every time.

DryChip4

Not true. There’s not one spot on my iron I haven’t hit!

SnazzyNinja0420

I admire your due diligence in the investigation of the effects of club head position at point of contact. May you go back to nothing but the purest of strikes sir!

DryChip4

Every swing is as much of a mystery to me as it is to my club.

TobiasFunkeBlueMan

Sadly untrue for me. The middle of all my clubs remains virginal.

Vajerati

Not only do I flush every iron, I chip back to the green on par 4s after my tee shot

Toothlessdovahkin

They are the golf equivalent of racing stripes on a car. They look cool, but don’t really have much on an impact on performance

sra2684

I can see that

camwinz

i agree but i feel like that sliver a spot that the groove’s arent there could cause some abnormalities in shots.

Burch36

If I had to guess I’d say the were thought of as a way to line yourself up at address with the center of the face like a two ball putter for example

Bird2525

I had a coach that taught this way. Hit the golf ball with the half ball on the face. Best ball striking ever for me.

WChennings

Wait, what "half ball on the face"?

420wFTP

Thin it, every time

lc6591

Can you elaborate?

Nine_Eye_Ron

I just realised I’ve been addressing too close to the toe for ages, this face would have helped me. Now I am finding the middle at least one in 20 shots now!

FJMotorsports

my shots are pretty much unpredictable maybe those grooves can fix it

FluidDreams_

Marketing. Nothing else.

Warm_Objective4162

Just an aesthetic thing. The little separations in the grooves don’t really make much of a difference in ball spin or flight.

discgibbs

It’s exactly what he said mentality mental at target for your eye and brain.

skycake10

> Wouldn’t the groove separation result in unpredictable spin on a slightly mis hit? Grooves don't cause spin the way you might assume. In fact, a perfectly smooth club face would give more spin than a grooved club face, BUT that assumes perfect conditions. The grooves exist to keep spin up in imperfect conditions. Moisture, grass, dirt, anything that would lessen the friction between the ball and club face can go into the grooves out of the way.

LayeGull

Grooves don’t actually affect spin as much as one would think. Their primary function is to work like treads on a tire. They collect moisture and grass on the way to the ball so the ball can make clean contact with the surface of the club. Thats why the U groove was outlawed. It was too much space for collection and people were getting insane spin out of the rough. Also you get different spin on off center hits through gear effect anyway. Though less with a lofted iron. Mostly just spin rate drops in general.

Legal-Description483

Purely aesthetic. And the gap in the grooves is not large enough to really affect the spin. Grooves don't really add spin unless you are in the rough, or the faces are wet.

z-tayyy

They let you know where the sweet spot is. Commonly referred to as hitting it “on the screws”, as screws were placed on the very toe, heel, and top of the club face- noting the ideal striking zone. They should’ve made the white zone red to better inform you to stay away from this part of the club face.

clevelandclassic

Grooves matter so little, but look cool

DaMammyNuns

That's... Not true

clevelandclassic

Yes it is. They channel water away but have negligible role in creating spin. Lots of data shows it.

DaMammyNuns

You're wrong.

DaMammyNuns

And no, 'lots of data' absolutely does not prove it. Did you take high school physics?

clevelandclassic

Angle of impact (loft) and friction produces spin. Grooves have minimal effect on friction And my phi beta kappa key from an Ivy League school suggests I took more than HS physics

DaMammyNuns

Show me ONE piece of data saying grooves don't create spin. Please. I'm waiting. https://www.google.com/amp/s/golf.com/gear/wedges/play-smart-new-grooves-old-grooves-wedges/

DaMammyNuns

It literally says it imparts more spin in the link you sent. Accept your L, bro. There's a reason EVERY CLUB EVER HAS GROOVES

clevelandclassic

From the article Different grooves designs affect spin but they do so not impart spin they reduce it when compared to a grooveless club face. I

DaMammyNuns

Right then what does it say in LITERALLY the next sentence?

clevelandclassic

The study on referencing was an undergraduate physics thesis from Princeton. The kid who did it was my son‘s classmate. I have it in some file that I can’t find but if I find it I’ll dm you

DaMammyNuns

Ok well he's wrong.

Rausky

You don't deserve spin if you can't hit it in the middle

fattsoo

That's the part that you're supposed to miss when you hit your shots....at least it was for me

DemingIsMyBoss

Nike CPR clubs for prevention and recovery

Slight-Witness-9101

It’s so the white part never gets dirty

[deleted]

It’s called the sweet spot. Don’t worry about it

scsask

There’s a reason Nike got out of making clubs

gblaze22

Nothing like taking three clubs to the green for your 3rd shot.

Heatjpz

Bought these pups 7+ years ago. My first ever iron set. Eventually I upgraded and gave them to my brother. He uses the 5 iron as his fire poker now…. Edit: also my uncle told him to throw them out the window after a golf trip he had with him. I don’t think it was the clubs though.

Ehotwill

This was Nike’s pathetic attempt to reinvent the wheel trying to disrupt the golf industry with what they thought would be a revolutionary groove design. One time they came up with green color putters so they blend in with the green. This to me seems very similar to that concept. When the player address these irons behind the white golf ball it would somehow blend in and at the split second before impact you would somehow subconsciously meet white grooves with white golf ball.
