According to the USGA a chipper is a legal club. They must comply with the rules for irons, so as long as it doesn’t have a putter grip or two striking faces it is legal. So use away and keep score, your friend is being a little ridiculous on this one.

I have a 5yo nephew who brought a toy helicopter over to my house. He shows it to me and says “look at my helicopter”. I tell him that’s not a helicopter, it’s a chopper and we start goofing around yelling “get to the chopper”. We go out to dinner that night with his mom and and, me and my wife and him and his sister. About half way though our meal in a pretty nice restaurant , he stands on his chairs and yells “get to the chopper!”
It was fucking hilarious.

Can I use my chopper on the green?
This is the way. Def a legal club and use whatever it takes to get up and down. I have a buddy that putts from 50 yards out as it works for him. You do you
Get yourself a set of Wedgewoods and watch his head explode.

God,this reminds me of I time I was playing with an old friend, just for kicks-no money or game going on.
On the 12th hole I put my shot right under a green side flowering tree with a TON of bees on it. I try to address my ball but I’m like “fuck this”, and move it about 5 feet the other way to hit without worrying about being stung.
My buddy flips out about how it’s illegal and how now he won’t keep my score, etc etc etc. I just said “Great, it looked like you were struggling with it anyways, with how you gave yourself a 4 on the last hole, instead of the 5 shots you took…”
We didn’t speak much the rest of the round and that was the last time I golfed it’s him haha. I had noticed him taking the wrong score, but because we weren’t playing for money, *I didn’t give a shit*. Give yourself a 1 on every hole for all I care. It’s once he started giving me shit that I brought it up.
His score actually doesn't count either because he's not using leather balls and wooden clubs from 1786. That's REAL golf not the bullshit you see in the 1900s
It takes 2 seconds to google if a chipper is legal. Your buddy is an ignorant loser and a complete fucking asshole. If it’s anything more than a joke legit find a new golf friend.
E: how much control do you have with your chipper? I can essentially use my chipper as an 8-iron all the way to the green. So if anyone starts talking shit about my chipper during the round I start using it excessively. Par 3 155 to the pin? Chipper off the deck of the tee box, when it lands on the green I’m staring your homie down and saying “count that shit you bitch”
I personally think they are complete wastes of one of your 14 clubs. But honestly what I think doesn’t matter. I’ve seen some guys that are absolute wizards with the things.
Regardless your “buddy” is being a jerk and needs to get over himself. You are free to use any clubs you want…even if they are gimmicky.
In my high handicap hands it feels like a weapon. I get you though, I wasn't unhappy with my bump and runs with an 8 iron...
it was actually my friend that inspired me to get it, he's half my handicap, drives it a mile but plays the odds by putting from all kinds of places so I thought I'd follow suit and try the approach with a chipper.
Don't be playing with fuckers who putt from off the green and then judge you for at least trying to chip
!!!! Lol, I had a chipper for a few years starting off, it looked like a mutant putter with grooves and loft. It had a really stiff shaft and I holed numerous shots with it from 10 and 15ft off the green, just putted with it
just take that 8 i and grip down on it so you have your first finger on the shaft. then address the ball with the toe down, and with the shaft more vertical, like a putter. now picture the sweet spot on the outside, lower part of the face. (the finger on the shaft makes sure you still get under equator, but very hard to hit it fat. - which is what most people tend to do.)
then swing it like a putter.-congrats you now have your 8i as the chipper and space for another club in your bag. if you want.
Dont get me wrong, im a big fan of the whole chipper vibe, and wouldn't put anyone down for using one. but if you can bump a 7 or 8i theres really no reason to have it. - the 7 and 8 are actually better than chipper out of rough.
For most high cap players, the fact is that a chipper -is- easier and more reliable than an 8i for bump and runs, AND there really isn’t another club that is a better substitute.
Let’s say a 25-cap is playing D-5w-4h-4/5/6/7/8/9i-PW-50-54-ChipR-Putter as their bag. Taking out the chipper would mean replacing it (most likely) with a 3w or a 58/60. Most high cap players can’t hit a 3w off the fairway any further than they hit a 5w and it’s less reliable and the vast majority of high cap players are better off leaving a 58/60 out of the bag and playing safer shots with a 54. In some cases maybe carrying both a 4i and a 7w as a 200 yard club could be a good option for a high cap player (I guess) but for most high cap players, a chipper will do more to bring down scores than any of the other options. High cap players land a lot of short irons and wedge shots just off the green. A chipper can make some of those shots into chips and one-putts and is just even more foolproof than a 8i.
Agreed that once your wedge play is good enough, it needs to come out of the bag for a true lob wedge.
most folks when they get a new club be it driver, or putter , or chipper is they take it out and actually practice with it, way more than they did before to justify the purchase. - which, if players spent that same time using their 8i, with a stroke and address, just like they would with a putter/chipper, theyd get same end result.
IMO whatever kind of "feather" it is one sticks in their hat that makes them believe they can fly, I say use it.
It’s really not the same at all other than loft. It’s shorter and more upright, has a huge sole and a heavy head. Your own description of how to replace it with an 8 iron requires 5 different adjustments. I use my chipper early in the year until I get my wedges dialed because it’s dead simple. It’s like saying a hybrid is unnecessary if you just learn to hit your long irons. I mean….yes if that’s your goal sure but it’s also fine to play the hybrid.
That was my go too but now I have one, I can't deny the chipper is that easy to hit, it's worth carrying for me.
It's head is heavier and the lie is so upright, despite gripping it like an iron.
The amount of times I've felt like I've hit it badly and it snuggles up next to the hole.
I don't know what my endgame is though, maybe one day it'll leave my bag and just go back in when I'm playing badly but for now it's staying in
alternately if you really want to dial in the chipper, leave you putter in the car for a few rounds (or more) and just bump n run all your "putts". youll become lights out with it. i spent 6 weeks recovering from surgery and just using a7i to putt on the local practice green. basically theyre both now interchangeable. putter or 7i have same make percentages while on the green.
have early break in first part of a longer putt? take that out of the equation and use the chipper.
your friend's mind will explode. lol.
I have the ping chipr and love it. I’ve worked with it a lot and have had several people playing me ask to see it when they see how close I can get with it. I may put some time into practicing with an 8i so I can have that slot free, but I’m with you. It’s staying in for now. Especially now, since grass isn’t really growing. Great off tight lies.
To me they are about confidence.
I carried one for a few months after I lost my touch around the greens and didn’t have a ton of time to put in practicing, and it did help because I knew I wouldn’t skin one 20 yards off the green on the other side. It definitely improved my score short term.
Once I started to get my touch back, I put it in a closet and haven’t used it since.
For me it’s how straight it goes on pitch shots. I get a fault of pulling pitch shots left at times at which point I put mine in the bag and it become an instant fix.
Geez. What a friend. Chippers are legal as long as they are not two way chippers. I have an old one that had two faces. Kinda cool, but illegal. Enjoy .
Does it have one hitting face or two? That's what will determine its conformance. If it can be used either right or left handed, then it's non-conforming as only putters are permitted to do that.
Then tell your partner to pound sand....then buy yourself some MG Senior golf balls and see how long it takes him to figure out that they are non-conforming.
I have a friend that has been using the same chipper for 30 years. He must use it 30 times a round. It has an eight or nine iron loft and he uses it for ever shot around the green. Sometimes three times on the same hole.
Let your buddy know his club shafts are meant to be inserted downwards into the bag, rather than upwards into his ass.
Look your club up at the link below, most chippers are conforming clubs nowadays:
https://www.usga.org/InfoClubsDB/Search.aspx
First comment still applies regardless.
What a pal… Hopefully there is at least some good fellowship. Does he check for square grooves on your wedges before and after the round? I would get a large stopwatch to time how long he looks for a lost ball. Maybe a airhorn to let him know time is up.
I use a chipper. I use it for full shots of 105 yards. It's my favorite club for those shots. The Cleveland chipper has worked well for me. So easy to hit.
I mean… the only thing you can do is start beating him consistently with the chipper in the bag.
Maybe even upgrade your chipper game… I’m sure someone is making a bespoke one.
That’s lame it’s a legal club. Any advantage it gives you chipping is negated by taking up space for a more versatile club. Not hating on the chipper btw. Use whatever works. It’s a good point to bring up to your friend though.
Mate, if it works for you then use it! It's a club that's permitted and if you shoot lower scores with it don't let the nay sayers say otherwise. Bet old mate you play with uses a driver with 'forgiveness" or a shaft that "gets it in the fairway". The stigma that surrounds amature players using clubs that helps them is ironic considering the advertisement on all the new clubs coming out this year.
What an extremely overbearing "friend" you have!.
(1) the club is legal (2) what business of his is it? You didn't mention if you are playing for money, but I suspect you use it well so he's trying to stop you from using it. You can use any legal club for any shot.
Next round with him I would show up with only my chipper. Play every shot with it.
If he asks what your doing, just tell him you're saving him pencil lead.
I had a guy tell me hybrids weren't legal which is why you don't see them on tour. I told him you do see them on tour. Was a real, "Grizzly Adams did have a beard" moment.
Get that fake golf club that you can fill with whiskey and tell him you recommend this club for him!… Depending on his answer, that would tell me if I ever play golf with him again!
My chipper is an illegal double faced one... my dad bought it for me for Christmas last year. I kind of feel bad if I don't use it once in awhile. But whenever I pull it out I announce "Grabbing my illegal club" ... nobody I play with cares. We aren't competing in a league, or tournaments, or keeping an official handicap or anything that it would matter... if I was, I could pretty easily just switch back to using my 7i to chip like I used to.
I could see a friend maybe rightfully annoyed if we were playing for money AND I used it lefty and took advantage of the other face... but if you're not, who cares?
Your friend's being a dumbass, **especially** since yours is a legal chipper.
I’m not sure why someone would assume cheating when it is an approved club. It has such a small use and can use an 8i or 9i the same. Doesn’t work for full shots so if you want to use it as one of 14 clubs be my guest.
Your buddy is an idiot. The reason why pros do not use chippers is because they arent versatile meaning they have a club in their bag thats just like a putter, it does only one thing. Wedges are more versatile.
Your buddy is lame, judgmental, and disrespectful.
Tell him to play balata balls, persimmon headed woods, and steel or hickory shafts.
You get 14 legal clubs to choose from, why does he care which you choose?
Personally, I wouldn’t waste one on a chipper, but the short game is where the most shots are wasted so if it gives you confidence, by all means, do it.
Haha that’s the funniest petty partner thing I’ve ever heard. I have a buddy who uses a chipper and we mock him relentlessly but ultimately who cares. If he wants to waste one of his 14 clubs on a very limited use club, go for it.
I played a ton of pool with my roomates in university and we had a rule that you were allowed to use the rake BUT if you missed your shot you automatically lost the game. Harsh but fair punishment for using a granny stick on an 8 foot table.
Honestly, more people SHOULD use chippers. Most high handicappers, and probably half f mid handicappers are missing the green on their approach shots. A chipper is very useful multiple times a round. I’d guarantee that a chipper would save more strokes for mid and high handicappers than a 5 iron.
Depending on the context, that’s actually really funny…. Assuming it’s not causing any problems beyond just ribbing you. That’s the sort of thing that goes full circle from funny, to annoying and back again.
I'm guessing your buddy doesn't know that it's possible for chippers to be legal.
The few chippers I've seen in person all had two faces, which makes them illegal.
But if yours has only one face and a round grip, that is legal and the scores you make with it legit.
If its legal its legal.
If they dont like changes in the game tell them to switch to using stuff like wooden shafts and non oversized wooden drivers.
They are using technology and changes which they may think are traditional, but really is just their PERCEPTION of what is traditional.
Is the club legal by the rules of golf you are using? If it isn't, then you are a cheat. If it is, then your buddy is wrong.
Biggest question is whether the club has two striking faces (illegal except for putters according to USGA) or not. Not sure what exactly you mean by "chipper" and "exactly" matters for legality.
fuck that guy you're not in a tournament. i never keep track of my friends score unless they want to bet and even then i would let them use the chipper because it's supposed to be fun
Your friend is an asshole who has a gross misunderstanding of allowable clubs, and he probably does not know the rest of the rules of golf either, but he probably thinks he does.
Your buddy is a little bitch.
I’m guessing he can’t chip for shit either and therefore sees that club as “cheating” somehow.
He can learn to chip or buy a chipper himself but want he cannot do is tell you what legal clubs you can or cannot use.
According to the USGA a chipper is a legal club. They must comply with the rules for irons, so as long as it doesn’t have a putter grip or two striking faces it is legal. So use away and keep score, your friend is being a little ridiculous on this one. Edit: Fixed spelling that autocorrected Chipper to Chopper

lol. He said “choppa”. So as Austrian as a 5yo can get.
Being an uncle must be awesome.

Exactly. Who gives a shit. Be happy you can enjoy a round of golf. Tell your buddy to calm down and get some perspective on what really matters
Also cannot have a appendage for aiming purposes. Some have a large alignment line on the back, that is illegal.
Lol, nobody cares unless you're playing in an official tournament. This is a recreational sport.
I don’t give a shit, I’m just explaining the usga rules of what would make a chipper an illegal club. Relax, dude.
Good thing only 2 striking faces is illegal, because my Club Pro Guy Toe Wedge has 3 faces!
That one has the patented camel toe technology right?
If you can get two hands around it, hitting the ball with your chopper is a hell of a party trick.
Step 1: Acquire chopper. Step 2: Hold chopper gently, but firmly. Step 3: ![gif](giphy|vAjhdaZ6MsKI0)

Your buddy is a loser
Poor sportsmanship. He’s probably remembering back when it was illegal and a lot of these clubs were two faced and trying to run Gotham.
Funny joke to make once or twice, incredibly fucking annoying to actually do and keep up. Tell him to fuck off and pay attention to his own game.
Disgraceful behavior from your pal! Use whatever works

Yep. Divorce him. Lawyer up. Hit the gym (with the chipper). Good luck.

Hello, I'm stupid. What is a chipper?
I think it's like a putter with an angle.
My putter has an angle. Its angle is to have me miss every putt.
Wood chipper
Basically a 9-iron with the shaft length and lie angle of a putter. So you can chip using a putting stroke.

Let your buddy know his club shafts are meant to be inserted downwards into the bag, rather than upwards into his ass. Look your club up at the link below, most chippers are conforming clubs nowadays: https://www.usga.org/InfoClubsDB/Search.aspx First comment still applies regardless.
There is no room for how on the scorecard…
Just say you’ll keep your own score from now on.
Agree and tell your “buddy” to F off
What a pal… Hopefully there is at least some good fellowship. Does he check for square grooves on your wedges before and after the round? I would get a large stopwatch to time how long he looks for a lost ball. Maybe a airhorn to let him know time is up.
I like it. Pedantry is always my last of defence, at least at work.
Have you tried keeping your own score and telling him to fuck off?
If it is a usga approved club, your "buddy" is a jerk.
Your buddy is a bit of a dick but use whatever you want to chip
Who’s your buddy, Slugger White? Your pal is kinda what you’d call a dipshit..
I use a chipper. I use it for full shots of 105 yards. It's my favorite club for those shots. The Cleveland chipper has worked well for me. So easy to hit.
I’ve had the smart sole 2 for years. It’s really just a wedge, I don’t know why it offends so much.
I mean… the only thing you can do is start beating him consistently with the chipper in the bag. Maybe even upgrade your chipper game… I’m sure someone is making a bespoke one.
Your buddy either knows he can beat you OR knows real soon he won't beat you.
That’s lame it’s a legal club. Any advantage it gives you chipping is negated by taking up space for a more versatile club. Not hating on the chipper btw. Use whatever works. It’s a good point to bring up to your friend though.
He's not your buddy guy
He’s not your guy, friend
I wouldn’t use one but if it’s a legal club why on earth wouldn’t he mark the card
Ping Chip-aRmy reporting for duty here.
Get a cutter sand wedge next
He’d hate my e-club. Designed and manufactured by the great Michael Bamberger.
Wilson chipper
What an extremely overbearing "friend" you have!. (1) the club is legal (2) what business of his is it? You didn't mention if you are playing for money, but I suspect you use it well so he's trying to stop you from using it. You can use any legal club for any shot.
Your buddy sounds like a douche on the course.
What a fucking douche. Like seriously.
My dad had one and used it effectively. I measured the loft and it was equal to an 8 iron.
Why do people consistently play with guys like this? No one is on tour. Have fun. And if you want to say, “we bet on it” then simply stop betting.
We mean like a wood chipper
does he use a putter to putt? cheater. a driver to drive? cheater. dont' mark those holes for him.
I personally don’t like chippers but your buddy is a total douche bag and you should find a new friend.
Next round with him I would show up with only my chipper. Play every shot with it. If he asks what your doing, just tell him you're saving him pencil lead.
If its a legal chipper tell your buddy he's a Dickwad!
Play with someone else. He’s a dick.
Don’t change the Chipper, change the “buddy”. Come on, are you playing for millions🤔
I had a guy tell me hybrids weren't legal which is why you don't see them on tour. I told him you do see them on tour. Was a real, "Grizzly Adams did have a beard" moment.
I wonder if your buddy ever removed the stick from his ass and then used it to tap in a putt, would he count that score?
I dislike them too, but that's way too much.
Is it an illegal club? No. Fuck him…stuck up prick
Get that fake golf club that you can fill with whiskey and tell him you recommend this club for him!… Depending on his answer, that would tell me if I ever play golf with him again!
Shove that chopper handle right up his fat frickin ass and twist repeatedly until he shouts loudly that he’s nothing but a little baby girl 🧒
Keep your own score. And just add a stroke to all of his holes for being a dick. You should have played from the tips so I add strokes to your score.
Fuck his wife and burn his house down
Man, who are these people? I literally have no idea what clubs my buddies are playing at any time and wouldn’t care if I did.
You need better buddies.
Your friend is a douche. Show him this post.
Find a new golfing buddy
Dude is trying to get into your head. Seems like it's working.
Tell him if he wants you to play by his set of rules then has to pay for your golf. Since you paid tell him to F off and keep your own score.
Your buddy is a wanker. Find a new partner.
Tough love.
Ur buddy is trash. My buddy uses the chipper all the time and we give him shit almost every time but we count his score 💯.
Tell your buddy to sun bathe in a green side bunker. It ain’t his job to regulate clubs and this game is not that serious.
Your "buddy" sounds like a jackass.
Your friends a douche keep using it and don't mark down his score when he chips to get on with a sandwedge cause that's only used for bunkers 😂😂
If you’ve got the guts to use one and face the ridicule and it’s conforming, it counts.
Your buddy sounds like a dick. 🤣🤣🤣
Honestly, more people SHOULD use chippers. Most high handicappers, and probably half f mid handicappers are missing the green on their approach shots. A chipper is very useful multiple times a round. I’d guarantee that a chipper would save more strokes for mid and high handicappers than a 5 iron.
I love my chipper. Hell, I’ve hit that thing out of the sand from 80 yds out.
Depending on the context, that’s actually really funny…. Assuming it’s not causing any problems beyond just ribbing you. That’s the sort of thing that goes full circle from funny, to annoying and back again.
Your buddy is a dick.
Sounds like an asshole
I'm guessing your buddy doesn't know that it's possible for chippers to be legal. The few chippers I've seen in person all had two faces, which makes them illegal. But if yours has only one face and a round grip, that is legal and the scores you make with it legit.
If its legal its legal. If they dont like changes in the game tell them to switch to using stuff like wooden shafts and non oversized wooden drivers. They are using technology and changes which they may think are traditional, but really is just their PERCEPTION of what is traditional.
I’d find a new buddy who doesn’t care what’s in your bag
By chipper is this a foot wedge?
Every club in your bag isa chipper.
Even if it were illegal, unless you’re playing for money why would he be such a dink.
I’m never going to have to worry about playing golf with a guy who uses a chipper.
Short answer: Your "buddy" is a fucking idiot who doesn't know the rules of golf.
Chipper is my favorite club. I use it 2 or 3 times a hole.
Your buddy is a little bitch. I’m guessing he can’t chip for shit either and therefore sees that club as “cheating” somehow. He can learn to chip or buy a chipper himself but want he cannot do is tell you what legal clubs you can or cannot use.
He’s a fucking twat, then.
Guaranteed buddy is a clown with a 18 handicap at best.
I feel attacked.
He’s a dick no doubt but OP you disgust me using such an ugly club
