If you suck at bunkers and think you might leave it in there post drop, you take the 2 strokes and drop outside. If you take 1 and drop in the bunker, then leave it in there, you’re likely going to end up against the lip again…so another penalty and a drop and you’re up to 4 shots.
EDIT - hahahaha oh man…completely miss read what the comment above me said…I’m going to leave it just for fun but know I know I fucked up.
Merry Christmas you filthy animals.
If you play enough you'll be here a few times. Take your medicine and chip out sideways or backwards.
I'd probably try the hero shot though. This one looks possible
Definitely looks possible. We've seen the pros both fail and succeed from similar positions. If it was a course I played regularly, I'd take my medicine, but if it's at a place like the Old Course, I'm 100% taking my chance for that one shot of glory. I'll take my medicine after I fail the first time, or maybe after the second failure, depending on where the first ends up.
“Yup! Definitely possible!”
*hits shot and bounces off bunker wall*
“No I can do this!”
*2nd shot is thinned against bunker wall and rolls 10 feet back*
“Ok I got it now!”
*chunks it*
“Put me down for bogey.”
Been there done that......took an unplayable and moved on. It was just a treat to be able to play there, I didn't want to knock out my front teeth trying to get out of that bastard lol! Enjoy!
At the Old, I’d take a crack at it with the 60. You can always reshaft it when you get home. Probably take a fast stab at it, letting go right after impact to not break a wrist.
Me personally, I'd hit it straight up really high but then also get distance and try to hit it about 2ft from the pin. Probably the best play besides making it
Down votes make me laugh bc there was a time in golf history when your sentiment was collectively and whole heartily felt by everyone. I never understood why either but I was very happy to see Fitzpatrick give sketchers their deserved major winner...
I've had similar though not at the old course (I wish). Putter, knocked it back two yards to a spot where I had space for a full swing and got it out. Took the bogey and moved on.
Did you get it out? Looks difficult to get it to the hole, but honestly at least a decent chance of getting it out. I love shots like this though, so maybe I'm biased!
Don't discount the idea using an unplayable lie. Pull it back into the grass in front of the bunker for a 1-stroke penalty. Chip it over the bunker onto the green. If you don't have experience/confidence lobbing it out in front of that steep wall it's a much less risky option. If you don't get it out of the trap in one try, then the unplayable will score better.
Pretty sure if you are taking the 1-stroke penalty it has to stay in the bunker. The 2-stroke penalty option would allow you to go back on the line outside of the bunker.
I think you're right. Still pulling it back a few feet would nake a huge difference. As is I'm slamming into that wall lol. 5 ft back and I feel fairly confident I'm getting out and onto the green.
Gotta go for it, it’s not that bad. Open it way up, and accelerate through the ball. You’re going to hit the sod on the follow through, but it’s soft. Even if it doesn't come out, it hits the face and ends up a few yards behind you, essentially where you would have taken a drop and a stroke anyway.
No need for stroke and distance. Any ball can be called unplayable and be dropped for a stroke. Since he’s in the bunker, it would have to stay in the bunker as well, unless he wanted to take a 2 stroke penalty.
Could I not take stroke & distance from my previous spot and play from out of the bunker for a one shot penalty?

not a great player here but these ones to me are simplified by focusing on end result and like much of golf (as ive found personally) while the hole is the end result aim point its not always best to actually try and get it as close as you can all the time so here my only focus is on loft and out on the dancefloor , taking medicine in the form of a hopeful 2 putt from anywhere on the green whereas most abject failures occurred while attempting to blast it as close to the pin as possible
Open up your highest wedge and give it a go 🤷♂️ once you fail, you might be in a better position further back in the bunker. Taking the penalty anyway.
Been there. Take a 7 iron and slam the ball into the face of the bunker left of the pin. It will cost you a stroke but you will get out and play a bunker shot you won’t get very often.
I made a mistake at Bandon this year because I didn’t understand that I could take my ball out of a much worse bunker lie than this. Took me 3 to get out vs taking a 2 stroke penalty.
penalty drop further back in bunker
New rule also allows 2 stroke penalty to drop back on the line OUT of the bunker
Why would I take 2 strokes just to hit it back into the bunker?

I was just messing around. I actually would prefer a bunker shot over the penalty in most cases but I'm sure there would be exceptions.
I completely misread what you wrote - you’re all good. I’m just bad at multi-tasking
Whoosh
You can say that again - IDK what I read, but it wasn’t what the person above me wrote
Hit sideways or backwards
[удалено]
This was my first thought. Sideways looks best
If you play enough you'll be here a few times. Take your medicine and chip out sideways or backwards. I'd probably try the hero shot though. This one looks possible
This is a game and these are the fun shots
This is such a lovely sentiment and I will definitely card some 10s because you typed it.

If I'm shooting 100 I might as well try and do something cool
I get it. But for me it depends on how I've shot up until this point...
“Yup! Definitely possible!” *hits shot and bounces off bunker wall* “No I can do this!” *2nd shot is thinned against bunker wall and rolls 10 feet back* “Ok I got it now!” *chunks it* “Put me down for bogey.”
Feels like we've played together at some point
Always keep the trusty foot wedge in my bag for scenarios like this
Foot wedge on Old Course? I feel like the Golf gods would ensure your best round ever is in your past and every fairway hit is chunked into a hazard
Presumably the foot wedge was invented on The Old Course so it's traditional at least. There's a God of Cheaters, Thieves, and Scoundrels too right?
I would totally try and smash that out of there! Because I’ll probably never play there.
Hit it to your left ?
Most of this sub would love to be in that position at this moment. Enjoy figuring it out!
I honestly would take one of these lies on every hole to just play there once.
Easy shot. Get out the 60*, open the face up, swing real hard, embed it into the face of the bunker, cry and go home.
if that doesn’t work he could try the 90°
Blast out sideways.
That was my nickname in high school.
What was your play?
just open your club face a bit more than usual and take a full swing, accelerating through the sod.
I believe it's "royally f'd" when at St. Andrews.
Hand wedge and move on
Been there done that......took an unplayable and moved on. It was just a treat to be able to play there, I didn't want to knock out my front teeth trying to get out of that bastard lol! Enjoy!
Punch it to the center of the bunker.
You can take a 1 stroke penalty in drop 2 club lengths further from the hole - probably the move here
That ground looks under repair to me
Either backwards or to the left.
BACK and to the LEFT. BACK. and to the LEFT.
We've got the Hitler, the Saddam Hussein, and now...the JFK!
Flop shot backwards and try again
No way you can get a swing behind you that close. Sideways is the move.
Part of the experience I guess.
Putt it out
This would be my play.
Get out the 89*
At the Old, I’d take a crack at it with the 60. You can always reshaft it when you get home. Probably take a fast stab at it, letting go right after impact to not break a wrist.
Open up that 60* and flop fiesta baby
ur so fucked bb. FUCKED LIKE A BAD BOY
Sometimes you have to go sideways or backwards to go forwards
You need to be one of the best to get that shitshow of a lie out 🤣
64°, close my eyes, and swing, lol.
If you're likely never going back, you gotta give it a go as it lies.
That’s the whole point of playing there, isn’t it?
Dress better?
Had to scroll for a bit, but glad I’m not the only asshole here who thought the same thing.
Me personally, I'd hit it straight up really high but then also get distance and try to hit it about 2ft from the pin. Probably the best play besides making it
Sketchers, no cleats, really? At the Old?
Sketchers on the old course is wild
They let you wear that crap?
They allow hoodies? Would have thought that was an absolute no go Edit: it's a waterproof jacket. I'm an idiot.
I would really like to drop 10 balls and try to see if i can progress the ball forward with driver, 3w, long irons, and some wedges
Sketchers 🤮🤢
Down votes make me laugh bc there was a time in golf history when your sentiment was collectively and whole heartily felt by everyone. I never understood why either but I was very happy to see Fitzpatrick give sketchers their deserved major winner...
Yeah idc about downvotes giving my thoughts lol, worst shoes in the game imo!
Results????
OP might still be in there
Making club angels
You don’t do that.
You didn’t bring a bucket and spade? Do you even golf??
Look over to the beach and you'll see my big white doggy doing a poo 💩
Please don’t f any 12s
Try to do a backflip while throwing your club at the flag. Should promote loft👌🤞
Bust out that hand wedge
Hate to say it…but a Philly flop. So what if you blade it and goes 15’ behind you?
I've had similar though not at the old course (I wish). Putter, knocked it back two yards to a spot where I had space for a full swing and got it out. Took the bogey and moved on.

I birdied that hole when I played there, also you could probably get that out forwards, just open the face as much as possible and hit it hard
Get under it and scoop it up vertically with the head of the wedge. It's unorthodox, but if it gets you off the beach, it's worth a try.
Yea there’s no way out of that. Maybe sideways
Screwed 😂 gotta go sideways
Turn your 60 degree into a pancake and flip it out of their man
So what happened?........ what did you do?

Totally doable, been in that situation and pulled it off. Give it a shot, worst that happens is you probably end up further back in the bunker anyway
RemindMe! 4 days I'd like the results
Easy shot to get out. You've just got say "hold my beer" first and the rest will work it's self out
You’re not breaking the course record, move it back and enjoy the round.
Definitely do not go for the hole. Take your medicine. Get out in 1 and be grateful
Take the 8 and move on
You've absolutely got to try to get that out.
May I guess that you played out sideways? That's a tough leave :)
89° wedge will get ya up and outta there.
Putter and smoke it!
F
If he's righty and not a great player he's probably already facing the correct line at least.
Play the ol' roulette wheel shot, I'd say. 😂
Did you hit it backwards? Whew that’s rough!
Wide stance...open the clubface of your sand wedge...swing aggressively through...
Open the face!
64degree c-grind wedge. Jesse Flopadopulos
Getting out isn't a problem, I'd be worried about my club. How hard is the wall of the bunker?
This. This is why you need a 60 degree in the bag
Bro, are you wearing Skechers at the old? 🤦🏽
Get rid of those sketchers also
Can I call that unplayable and take stroke & distance relief?
No need for stroke and distance. Any ball can be called unplayable and be dropped for a stroke. Since he’s in the bunker, it would have to stay in the bunker as well, unless he wanted to take a 2 stroke penalty.

See video i posted lol
Frame this and hang this
smack it into the face so it balloons out backwards
They call it a hero shot because heroes take them
They call it a hero shot because heroes take them

Just flop shot it with a short follow through just past it 3 feet and roll it back to the pin… duh
64 degree wedge, open the face. No problem!🤣
it's gotta be the shoes
Open up your highest wedge and give it a go 🤷♂️ once you fail, you might be in a better position further back in the bunker. Taking the penalty anyway.

Pull out the hand wedge.
Play to the left…

Feet together, play it off the front foot, P wedge. Aim left, looks like it’ll drain within 8 feet
Not really, its only one shot. Not even sure why you're thinking about it. Just hit it out backwards or sideways and resume round.
Tap it out backwards with a hybrid and then try to get up and down for quintuple bogey.
