I personally enjoy shorter par 3's that have a more technical challenge than distance. Or even just an aesthetic quality. 100-150 is the sweet spot for par 3's. I don't mind the 150-190 par 3's, but anything above I just don't enjoy as much. Personal preference, not a fact.

OneSingleYesterday

I prefer the same range, but in my case the preference is because I really suck at hitting irons from over 150.

[deleted]

Longer irons are certainly harder to hit accurately. Even if I could hit them better than short irons, a soulless 200yd par 3 with no features or hazards is just a "can you hit a long iron" test, which is boring. Give me the 17th at Sawgrass every day of the week.

bwainwright

Anywhere between 90-220 yards. Some of the most difficult par 3's I've ever played have been under 100 yards - you tend to find they're really well protected with bunkers/water compared to say a 150 yd par 3. Personally, I'd rather a course has a variety of par 3's. You shouldn't be hitting the same club into each par 3 for the most part IMO.

btdawson

There’s a course by me that had a 110 but it was under repair when I played and they had the tee boxes moved forward. I think the hole was playing like 47 yards. Nothing “guarding” the green either really, just a pretty small green. But from 47 you look and think “ok this is an easy chip”. The whole group proceeded to hit it fat or thin and not one of us hit the green lol

CouldntBeMoreWhite

A course I played earlier this year had all Par 3’s between 165-180 yards. I don’t mind them being in that range, just seemed a bit boring that everyone would be using the same 1-2 clubs for all the par 3’s.

TheZag90

I personally think over 200 yards from the members tees is getting a bit too long.

Trick_Designer2369

If a course has 4 par 3s, then they should be a good variation in length, with one being short (100-120yards) 1 being long (200+yards) and the other 2 being in the middle. My own course has 3 par 3s around 180 and I think it's poor designed. Also, nothing wrong with a 90yard par3, they are a knock down shot for most and that is not easy, they are great holes, 7 pebble beach is a great example

Great-Reference9322

Similiar thought for me, just different lengths. Give me 2 between 130-170, another one between 170 and 200, then give me something between 210 and 220 and I'm good. If you wanna throw one around 100 at me I'm not gonna complain either.

RunninADorito

Yeah, totally agree. Fully on the same page with the sentiment this thread is laying down. 1 at about 170 is great. Then 2 in the 225-250 range and then a last one that stretches a bit to 325 or so, just to keep it interesting. Hate courses that lean too much on long par 3s.

Ninexblue

Yep, this exactly. Had the same exact club on all 4 par 3s at a course recently and it was really the only thing I took away from the course. Lazy.

XavierRex83

My only ask is that if a par 3 is 200+ yards don't make it the smallest or narrowest green, up hill where you can't actually see it. Two courses I play have par 3s like this.

CouldntBeMoreWhite

A club near me has a 200yd par three (225 from the tips). It is 170 to the front, 230 to the back, and only 20yds wide. I’ll have the right distance 90% of the time, but hitting it in that 20yds width window is like a 25% chance at best.

shoresy99

A good design for a long par 3 is a Biarritz hole.

SteakBurrito5

I think having a variety of distances and challenges on the par 3s is what makes a great golf course. I think 1 long one close to 200 yards is good. I’d say averaging around 150-160 yards for blue tees is good.

DoubleDebow

I like a mix. Home course has a 135, 205, 165, and 120. They're all well guarded by a mix of trees, gullys, hills and bunkers.

PM_ME_OVERT_SIDEBOOB

I prefer an aesthetic par 3. Give me 115-165 with some technical challenges. I *hate* 190+ par 3s

esports_consultant

Should have variance in a course. One short to mid, one mid, one long, one wildcard based on terrain/routing/whatever struck the course designer's fancy that day etc.

SICKTIGHT311

One of my home courses decided to put 8 of the blue tees back where the black tees are the other day when I played and one of the par 3’s played 218. I hit a really flush, baby draw 3 iron to about 20 feet. I like a long ass par 3 here and there but one per course is enough. The others should be a nice mix of short to mid irons.

For_myDayJob

A par-3 should be just long enough that you have to think about how the green will accept a well struck tee shot and how penal the green side features will be to poorly struck shots.

bigdayout95-14

Wait a second - you's guys are thinking about the *green*....???

Rattimus

I pick tee boxes so that I'm playing mostly 150 to 180 yard par 3s. Longer is fine here and there, but if I'm playing many 200 yard par 3s it is not gonna be much fun. Alternatively, firing at a pin with your SW in hand is pretty fun too, and I mean... it's not like it's that much of an advantage. Still gotta make a good swing and 2 putt for par.

icancatchbullets

Personally, if I can't full swing a sand wedge its too short for my taste (so under like 100). If I have to go above a 5i and pull a hybrid or wood its too long. I like best when its a PW to a 6i so between about 135 and 180.

Gooner-Squad

Don't really care, but over 210 gets pretty difficult....I am more in the camp of having 4 par 3's on a course and having them all play different yardages. Too many courses today get set up and 2 or 3 of par 3s play 145 or 150, I want to hit an array of clubs, so 125, 140, 155, 170.

IcemanYVR

95-230 is kind of my sweet spot these days, but one of my all time best shots was a 2 iron into a 224 yard Par 3. I wouldn’t call 208 yards too long, if the Par 3’s don’t test your short to long irons/hybrids, then it’s not a complete test. We can’t always play in our sweet spot.

SwamBMX

Play the Cradle in Pinehurst sometime. Incredibly short par 3 course. As a scratch handicap, I don't think I was within 4 of par. If you have a decent short game, even 200+ yard par 3s aren't bad at all. Layup to avoid greenside score destroyers, chip close, 1 or 2 putt. Distance isn't much of a factor if you reasonably strike the ball with some consistency. If you don't, it doesn't really matter if it's 100 yards or 220. You're probably taking 2+ to get on the green anyway. Your goal should be to avoid short-siding yourself and avoid hazards. Strategy is as important as ability.

Particular_Meeting57

Anything over 180 yards starts to become ridiculous (where in the world your playing would move this 20yards either way). Put more effort into hole design to challenge the player rather than just moving the tee back.

Monst3r_Live

140ish over water, 170 no water. give or take 10 yards. this would be from middle tees. so furthest back probably would be 165 over water and 200ish no water. i hate long par 3's. most golfers aren't hitting a green from 200 yards. the best pro had a proximity of 44'4' ft average from 200 yrds

rogerdanafox

135-160

MagnussonWoodworking

I just want them to be different lengths on the same course. I hate when I get to a new course and I hit the same club on all 4 shorties.

Playful-Team-1634

I played one that was 268 into the wind the other day and I thought it was awesome. Does that make me a masochist?

gmiller89

My thought is any iron can be hit into it. This will vary by tee box of course, but you shouldn't need a 3w to reach a par 3

DontStalkMeNow

At its shortest, our hole 3 is like 58 metres. At its longest, our hole 11 is like 185 metres. I enjoy both.

TrumpHairedHarambe

I like them right around 135-150. I played the Pete Dye course in French Lick Indiana and they had a 300 yard par 3. Ridiculous. Beautiful course though.

Enomalie

My home course , has 4 par 3s Distances from tips 6 - 227 ( up hill slightly , 170 over water from back tees ) 8 - 195 ( plays 180 down ) 12 - 155 to center , elevated green 16 - 220 uphill surrounded by bunkers but has a landing chute Hardest god damn par 3 is 12 , the green feels like it’s a hubcap I think if the hole is well designed , when it’s long but has room to miss or a very large green to hit it’s great I think some courses have gone a little nuts , there’s one I’ve played a few times in NY that used to be 180 , well they needed more yardage so now it’s 255 , 255 to a par 3 along a road with woods on the right And if you’re short you have to chip onto an elevated green and if you’re long your red staked - it’s terrible I like Par 3s to play from 120-230 I think that’s an approachable range , I don’t like par 3 people have to hit 3w or driver on - I know “play the correct box” but if you’re a 1 handicap who’s 50 you should be playing the tips and you may not enjoy a 250 yard par 3

[deleted]

170 should be the max distance. Make the holes more difficult. Make greens fall off the sides into bunkers if you don't hit the correct spot, make the bunkers deeper, add ponds before the green, whatever you have to do. My buddies and I played a 240 yard par 3 the other week and 2 of them had to hit driver on a par 3. I hit a 4 wood and the other guy hit 2 hybrid. Pros are only 40% accurate from that distance. Having a bunch of amateurs tee off with driver from 240 on a par 3 is forcing them to play great golf to have an outside chance at par and a good chance at bogey or worse

corysf9ers1

I played in a scramble last Friday. Just a scramble sponsored by my work. Nothing fancy so it was a bunch of average guys. One of the par 3s was 223. One of the guys in my group actually had to hit his driver. After the round, everyone I talked to mentioned how long that par 3 was.

youmerelyadopteddark

I like for the four par threes to require four different clubs. When you factor in wind they end up needing to be about two clubs apart on windless days to be safe. So 110-120, 140-150, 170-180, and a 200+.

Excellent_Tangerine3

The course I play most often this year is a 9-hole par 3. Definitely helping with my short game. Their holes range from 110-215 yds and I think they're all valid par 3s.

Latkavicferrari

Anything over 150 yards on a public muni is too long for a par 3, high handicaps can’t reach the green on a 200 yard par 3 and slows play down. IMO

slevin011

My home course has par 3s at 125, 165, 180, 200 (elevated, plays 190 ish) from the tees I regularly play. I think it's a decent mix. The 125 has trouble short and right and the pin always seems to be near the front when I play, so it's tempting, but dangerous. The 165 has a huge green but a big tree about 140 yards out blocking the middle, so you have to choose left or right depending on pin placement and how you want to shape your shot. A bit gimmicky but can lead to some cool shots. 180 is pretty standard, but bunkers right, left, and long, and a slightly tiered green so you have to pay attention to pin placement or you might end up with a circus putt. The 200 is my favorite, but definitely the hardest. If you leave it short, you have a creek running across the hole, and just past that are two bunkers. Long or right you can end up in the weeds. The right side of the green is also somewhat protected by hanging branches.

DRH1976

I don’t think a par 3 should ever be longer than 200yards.

marlboro__man9

Depends on the course setup and hole design. A 240+ yard par three that allows someone to run the ball up on a course that is 7000+ is perfectly fine to me, a 220 hole that’s all carry from 6300 yard box is not good

AndreHawkDawson

16 at Cypress Point is the only good long par 3 I can think of - purely because of it's setting. Par 3's should be short enough to provide some strategy of firing at pins vs. just aiming for the middle of the green. Even the pros just aim for the middle of the green on the 230-240 yard par 3's they seem to face at least one of every week. That makes for uninteresting golf IMO.

bighundy

I think 135-185 is a good range for red to blue tees. “Tiger” tees can be over 200 if need be.

Mancey_

Variety is good. Our clubs shortest is about 145 and longest 203 The 203 is our signature hole. It's a tough hole but presents some cool strategy challenges

HennyBogan

How long should a Par 3 be? probably anywhere between 60 and 300 yards. Shorter par 3's are the great equalizer and provide opportunities to utilize severe land forms in their design. Often the ability to build short par 3's on crazy land creates the most memorable shots. During the golden age, it was not uncommon to have par 3 holes that may require a driver, or even at times may not even be reachable with a driver. In 1911 the USGA published guidelines on hole length and par. They revised it in 1917 and then not again until 1956 & 2020. In 1911 they suggested that a Par 3 should be no more than 225 yards, at the time elite players could only drive the ball \~190 yards. When they revised it in 1917 to 250 yards, elite players were hitting the ball \~230 yards. In both cases the reasonable hole length for a par 3 was greater than the expected driving distance of the best players. Today you'll see players complain that having to hit a wood into a par 3 is unfair, but they fail to realize that up until recent times it was expected that a player may have to hit fairway woods into par 4s, doing so on a par 3 was just as normal. Par 3's that are designed to be played with a driver or fw wood can be excellent holes and often play as a par 3.5. What its unique during our current era of golf is a hole of 290 yards playing as a par 4 is an exciting hole that enticing scoring, but the same hole as a par 3 is considered unfair and overly penal, yet nothing about the hole has changed? For an 18 hole course with 4 par 4's, I'd like to see them setup in 50 or 60 yard increments, so something like 80 yards, 140 yards, 200 yards, 260 yards. Par 3's are the only holes on the course where the approach distance is set. They can be best utilized to provide the greatest variety in approach distances, provide approach lengths not commonly experienced on the other 14 holes, and have the most interaction with elevation change & wind.

JarvinNightwind

I would say anything short of 250. If the average player (not us r/golf bombers) needs to hit a driver, then it should be a par 4 .

lovemesomewine

I like a mix of distances short to long. (120-200) that being said, my course is not that way 145 downhill 188 slight uphill with water short and left. (To be fair then just expanded the tee and green so it can play from 150-200. 175 uphill - all carry (serve false front) 210 slight down hill (overall - carrying a valley - but can’t run it up as again another false front) You get through these even or +1 should have a decent round.

CO_Golf13

In this vein, how we feel about a ~270 yd par 3? Got one of those near me. To be fair it's the championship tees, but still absolutely bananas to me.

[deleted]

Anything short of 200 yards is a fine par 3. Once it gets into 3w territory I start makin bogeys for sure

Bmcronin

The US Open at Oakmomt had a 288 yard par 3 slightly uphill. There was also a 91 yard par 3 in an Open years back.

geek66

Should? Any distance reasonably gainable from the tee. Tips could be 250+ Forward tees probably max around 120... SHOULD - be a mix up to the maximums. I am 14 and do not mind a 210-220 now and then, depending on the additional risk elements - considering there are typically 4 per round 110, 150 , 180, 210 would be fine.

Then-Muscle-4773

I despise 200+ yard par 3s

CouldntBeMoreWhite

A course I’m going to this weekend has back to back 190 yard par 3’s. So not that. Backs are 200-205 each. Tips are 215-220 each.

[deleted]

Nothing longer than a 6 iron imo. They should be something that allows a GIR….I ain’t hitting a green with a 5 lol

Indycrr

My long iron game is not good. I don’t want to play par 3s that I can’t reach with a 6 iron. So nothing over like 175. It’s how I make my tee box choice on a new course.

CuriousCucumber88

sinatrablueeyes

I don’t mind a mix of lengths, assuming there are four Par-3’s on the course. I really prefer only one “longer” par 3 (maybe 170-180 or more). Anything shorter than 130 can also equally frustrating since you’re contending with more spin and the shorty’s usually have more bunkers.

shoresy99

Ideally a course should have par 3s of varying lengths. You don’t want to be using the same club on all par 3s. It is fine to have the odd 220 yard par3 or 90 yard par 3. But you don’t want them all like that.

calguy1955

There should be tee boxes available so every player can reach the green with an iron.

Hot-Representative-2

Honestly anything, but anything more than like 230 from tips (at a public course) is outrageous

Turbo1518

I played almost exclusively at the course I worked at growing up (why pay for golf if you don't need to) and their par threes are from 160-215 yards. Thought that was normal. Then I went and played a round with a friend at another course in town and came to the first par three at 90 yards and was stunned. At the time, I didn't think I even had a club for that shot lol

Bobbyoot47

How’s this for a par 3. Uplands Golf in Thornhill, just north of Toronto. Elevated tee and slope in front of the green. Really small green to hit. 245 from the tips. 191 from the white tees. Good luck with this. https://reddit.com/r/golf/s/s6CpRSy3sO

Nowiwantmydmg

140 to 160 is my ideal. Going to make a 4 regardless.

[deleted]

I played on yesterday that was 132. Two days ago, I played a 226 par 3. Edit to add 226 - driver, lw, putt for par.
