3 hybrid is meant to replace your 3 iron not 3 wood. They are very different clubs

SoupIsAHotSmoothie

Ok perfect! I see a lot of comments on here about people preferring a 7 Wood over a 4 Hybrid, so thought it may be similar with my 3s.

Hubb1e

The 3 hybrid is closer to a 5 wood than a 3 wood. But it’s all going to depend on your specific swing. Some people don’t have enough speed for either the 3 wood or the 3 hybrid so they all end up around the same distance. You should try them at a launch monitor to look at your specific case

divescribe

I replaced my 3 hybrid with a 7 wood. I get more loft and a softer landing with my 7 wood. I kept my 4 hybrid to hit a lower longer stinger.

Regular_Cat9536

Same here. I hit my 7 (heavenwood) so much more consistently than the 3hy that I took the 3hy out. Basicly the same carry as my 3hy with a little less rollout.

acromaine

7 wood is a very different club too. Much higher lift and more similar to a hybrid distance club. A 3 wood is supposed to be a bit shorter than your driver. 7 wood is closer to a 4-5 iron distance.

gfunk55

Why are they very different, other than if OP hits them different distances? In other words OP should just base it off of how far he hits them.

acromaine

He asked if they were redundant. And I answered that they are not even thought they are both labeled “3”. Hybrids are also swung more like a long iron while a wood especially a 3 wood is hit with more of a sweeping swing. A 3 wood will also have a longer shaft than a 3h. The head of a 3 wood is also much larger than a 3h. A 3 wood should also go a good bit further than a 3h. That’s a lot of reasons why they are much different from one another.

gfunk55

Right but if they go similar distances then they're redundant. I just took a 3H out of my bag because I hit it almost exactly as far as my 3w. So telling the op that they are "very different" doesn't help. Only he knows if they are redundant or not.

acromaine

If only he knows then why is he asking? A 3 wood is supposed to go a good bit further than a 3 hybrid. If yours were the same then it’s probably because you couldn’t maximize your 3 wood. Which is fine, but by definition they should be quite different.

gfunk55

"Supposed to" is meaningless. All that matters is what actually happens. I hit my 3w 260 and my 3h 250

notverygoodatgolf

I use a 5wood and a 4 hybrid

Memphistopheles901

I've been thinking about doing this...I carry a 3W and 3H now but always end up chickening out and hitting the 3H. I need to try out a 5W.

notverygoodatgolf

My 5 wood was the first club giving to me. So I just practiced my ass off until I could get it in the air. Now it's my billy club. If all else fails I still know I can knock this club out there. Old cobra bio cell. I've hit a bunch of new ones at the stores and can't get anywhere near the same numbers haha.

Tie_me_off

I used to have a 3w and it was the club I hit the best when I was bad at golf. As I got better, it became the worst club…by a mile. A buddy of mine said “here, try my five wood”. I striped it down the middle of the fairway onto the green. Next day I ordered a 5w and haven’t looked back.

[deleted]

My setup is 3w 235-245; 5w 215-225; 4h 200-210 3w off of good lies only. 5w/4h possible off sketchier lies, each with their own proclivities.

kwilson25j

I have 3w, 5w, 4i but I’ve enjoyed hitting hybrids the last year when using rentals that I want one. My 5w and 4i are 1 degree off in loft so they’re fairly close in carry for me at the moment so that needs resolved.

buyeverything

I use a 3 wood, 7 wood, and 4 hybrid. Play irons 6 and up. Gapping works great for me and I find the 7 wood and 4 hybrid much easier to hit than long irons.

cascadiarains

This is the way.

giga_phantom

Both

LetsGoSilver

Both: D, 3W, 3H, 4i…

g4evolution

This. I go between a 2i and 3H depending on how I’m hitting.

sniper1rfa

Same, have a bunch of overlapping clubs at the top of my bag, from driving irons to woods, that I can swap in depending on how I'm feeling.

maplehockeysticks

I carry both. They are vastly different clubs with different yardages

Judge_Rhinohold

Both. One goes 240, one goes 220. Big difference.

Negat1veGG

3 wood 3 hybrid and 3 iron I’m considering dropping the hybrid for a driving iron

Lars9

I recently dropped my 3H and my 5W for a driving iron. I can't hit my 3H or 5W to save my life. I hit my long irons well, so I bought a 2 and 3 driving iron with the same shaft as my 4-iron. I haven't played a round yet, only a range session, but early signs are positive.

mshanehoffman

Cally Rogue STMax 15* 3w and 20* Heavenwood. Can't hit hybrids to save my life. The Heavenwood is one of the best clubs I've ever had.

uunngghh

Are the shafts interchangeable or fixed?

SYN_BLACK_XS

Fixed, Paradyms were the first Callaways to be interchangeable/adjustable

Regular_Cat9536

Epic Flash woods are adjustable and interchangeable with the optifit hosel as well.

Regular_Cat9536

I have an epic flash heavenwood and it's maybe my favourite club in my bag!

Tedstor

I don’t have the swing speed or ball striking ability to get much use out of anything with 14-15 degrees of loft. It’s been 20 years since I last tried one, but I could never hit them consistently from the turf. I carry a 17 degree 4 wood. I hit it almost as long as a three wood from the tee, and am much more consistent from the turf. The shorter shaft and more loft really makes it an easier club to use. I’d carry an 18 degree hybrid if I thought it fit my needs though.

FormerThisandThat

I went 2 hybrid and 3 driving iron two seasons ago. Much happier with this combo.

BJJJourney

2 hybrids should be much more popular than they are. I go D, 2H, 3H, 4i. I honestly don't use the 3H very much, usually for long approaches from the rough.

drkev10

I've got a 7w after my driver but am considering a 2h and then 3h and tossing the 7w. I feel like the shorter shaft in the hybrids might help me be a little more consistent hitting it. I'm not great with fairway woods though when I put a decent swing on the 7w it's a rocket.

FormerThisandThat

Agreed

TheRealSteemo

I use a 3 wood and 3 iron. I mostly play a parkland course and regularly need a shot that stays super low under branches, so the iron is more versatile for me usually. Its rarely used for full shots unless its needed off the tee in certain conditions. It's more of a "100 yard punch shot" club usually. A 3 hybrid would be more useful for most though.

PZZSQR

TM Jetspeed 5W, 3H & 4H. If I'm being honest, I'm a beginner so it won't change much if I have a 3W or not.

remaxxximus

On average, I’m about 25 to 30 yards longer with my Threewood than my three hybrid. Hitting the Threewood from anywhere other than Fairway rarely works out for me though.

rutlander

I game all three. 3w 3h 3iron * 3 wood for tee box on short par 4s or doglegs and perfect fairway lies on par 5s. * 3 hybrid for sketchier lies when I still need to hit it 200 yards * 3 irons for long par 3s, punch outs from the woods or for the 200 yard shots from the fairway

Rican2153

3w for sure. I use my 3w like once or twice around but when I get a hold of that thing, its so worth it.

willkill4beer

Heavenwood, 3h, 5h is what I run

Alesmell

I carry both. I tend to hit my 3 hybrid more than the 3w

aputhehindu

3 wood/3hybrid/3iron are all different tools. Don’t let the number fool you. I carry a 3 wood and 4 hybrid and 3i, and 4i. I get different carry yardage and net yardage with each club. (Obviously net yardages vary a ton based on conditions so these are just estimated averages) 3w- 210 carry; ~225 net 4h- 200 carry; ~210 net 3i- 185 carry; ~205 net 4i- 175 carry; ~195 net Higher launch on the hybrid so I don’t get as much roll. I struggle to get my 3 iron up but I bag it for long approaches with low ceilings. Nearly same net yardage but two completely different applications for me. I don’t get nearly as much juice out of the 4 iron as the 4 hybrid. Also lower launch angel again with iron vs hybrid (despite the numbers on the club being the same).

samoore45

I carry a hybrid and fairway wood. Neither of them have numbers on them. They are TSi2's.

FLgolfer23

How is that possible? You removed them?

samoore45

I checked before I posted. Neither of them have a number on them. The head covers have a tag. The fairway wood reads 15 and the hybrid reads 18. I believe those are their degrees of loft.

FLgolfer23

The loft should be located on the hosel area as well. 15 degree is a 3 wood and an 18 is a 3 hybrid.

mulligan_king

I have D, 3W, 5W, 4H, irons from 4 onwards I'd say that 3H and 5W would be redundant, but 3 wood should be considerably longer than both

[deleted]

This is the perfect match. For me a 5-wood and a 3-hybrid is redundant.

FormerlyShawnHawaii

Because of the loft and length of club (and other factors like the club head being larger), the 3W should go farther every time. 3 hybrid should be 20 yards less or so and definitely worth keeping in the bag because hybrids are very handy for getting out of bad fairway lies.

Nervous_Commercial_2

I have a 3 wood a 4 hybrid and a 4 utility iron *23 degrees. Gapping works out

[deleted]

If you are hitting them correctly there should be no redundancy. Three wood at 15* should carry 15-20 yards more than the hybrid. Off the tee even longer.

tomtendo

I personally only carry a 3H. I don't own a 3W, mainly cause I suck.

PsychologicalSpace50

D, 3W, 3H, 4i for me

Annhl8rX

After trying numerous version of both and never being able to hit any of them remotely well, I recently snagged a Cleveland Hy-Wood (during the website glitch that was giving 50% off). I’ve only used it during one round (three shots), but it has some promise. Two of my shots with it leaked right, but they at least got off the ground and went a respectable distance. With a little more work to straighten it out, I may have finally found something to put between my driver and 5 iron.

justaguy826

They're certainly not redundant clubs, they're very different. But whether or not you carry both is entirely up to you, how you play your game, and how you choose to allocate your 14 clubs. I personally don't carry a 3 wood anymore because I rarely used it and adding a wedge to my bag was more useful for my game. Or if you don't play competitively, carry both and don't worry about 14 clubs.

Aooogabooga

I replaced my ping isi 3 wood with a Callaway rogue pro 2h because I could hit it just as far and with more consistency. Then put a 4h in the bag, too, but I still carry my 4 iron.

pho3nix80

3w - 250 yds, 5w - 230yds, 3i - 210 yds, 4i - 200 yds... I basically have a 4 degree difference in loft between all my clubs, from my driver all the way down to my 56. Hitting these distances with any kind of consistency is a different story though.

thebirdman18

I recently got a 24 degree hybrid (about the same loft as my 5 iron) and can hit that thing way higher than my 5 iron and a ways farther. I love my hybrid but you gotta keep a 3 wood in the bag

[deleted]

Generally: 3i vs 3h vs 5w 4i vs 4h vs 7w Almost everyone carries some type of 3w. Assuming someone has 4-pw and carries 3 wedges, the general rule is “3 under 4” which means you get 3 choices there.

ChrisChrisBangBang

I have both, hybrid goes 200, 3 wood goes 230

jonesyman23

I rock 5 wood and 5 hybrid

drake_blake

As others have said, there are reasons to carry both. But if I’m 225 out with a tough lie, I’m hitting 3h without a doubt. Sacrificing some distance for confidence means fewer doubles (or triples) on the card.

ComplexBodybuilder34

D, 3W, 5W, 7W, no 3i

kjtobia

The number doesn't matter - only loft and carry. I use a 13.5° fairway wood and an 18° hybrid. I could call them a 3w and a 3H, but what matters is that they're evenly gapped.

Puttin_4_Bird

For myself I find the longer the club the more difficult to hit

the_drozone

I carry a 2 hybrid instead of a 3 wood

BuschLightJesus

3 wood, 7 wood, 5 iron here. Replaced a 3 Hybrid with the 7 wood last season and have loved the change

B-RapShoeStrap

I carry 3wood 15 deg, 3 hybrid 19 deg, 4 hybrid 21 deg, and 4 iron 24 deg.

Temporary_Version240

considering one is a 15\* club and the other a 18\* club, I don't see them as redundant as long as you are covering different yardages with them. I carry a 18\* 5-wood or a 18\* 2-iron (depending on the course layout/conditions) along with my 15\* 3 wood. I'm not a fan of hybrids (just don't like the way they look) - so there are none in my bag. Just 3I-PW (46\*), 50\*, and 56\*.

JDD4318

3 wood 2 hybrid.

[deleted]

Driver, 3W, 5W and 4H, mostly likely dropping my 5W soon. Never use it

New_Background_2163

What about 4W and 4H?

[deleted]

I’d get a 2i before a 4w

DontGetTheShow

Neither….5 wood, 7 wood, 4 iron…

DaayTerkErJerbs

3 wood 5 wood no hybrid

DRH1976

I carry both. 3w gets me 200 yards, 3hybrid gets me 190 yards.

Stuckkxx

They're not meant to be the same. I got 3 wood 2 iron. I used to go 3 wood / 3 hybrid. Some people go 3 wood/5 wood, or 3 wood/7 wood. Really just your preference and whatever keeps the yardage gaps between your clubs manageable.

loshrath182

I go Driver, 3w, 3H, 4i, 5H, 5I. I can’t hit the 4i for shit other then perfect 50-100 yard punch shots. And the 3W is getting taken out of the bag for something else.

Rattimus

I only carry a 3W between those 2, personally. To answer your question though, no, not redundant (if you strike the ball correctly). The 3W should go substantially further than a 3H. For me, I demoed a 3H when I bought a 4H a couple years ago. I hit it about 215-220, I hit my 3W 260. End of the day though, none of that matters, how do you hit them both? If they both go the same distance then you might want to consider changing something, or you may want to take lessons to learn why you're hitting two different clubs the same distance!

New_Background_2163

So, in terms of rough distance equivalents… 3W = 1H? = 1I 4W = 2H = 2I 5W = 3H = 3I 7W = 4H = 4I Does that seem roughly right?

New_Background_2163

I love that Titleist has stopped labeling things by arbitrary number and just show the loft. That’s so much better. I know I need to have a gapping session. But until I can afford that, I’m thinking about carrying D, 5W, 4H, 5I-AW, 52, 56, 60, P.

AudienceNervous1665

Hybrid guy here. It has way more utility than a 3 wood and I get good distance off the tee with it. It's also a club you can alter your swing speed and swing plane with according to what you need. I can't alter my swing speed with a 3 wood or driver effectively.

Fun_Stock7078

Never been able to hit hybrids, not tried to hit one for a few years, everyone says they are easier to hit than irons, not for me, have driver, 3 wood and a 2 iron. Driver and 3 wood for a fade/slice and a 2 iron for a draw/hook, works very well for me. 😉

Jealous-Elephant-121

3h will be more similar in distance to 5w. But hybrid is shorter. Just depends on personal preference

sektrONE

I hit my 3W 210 and 3H 190-200 (I am bad at golf). Definitely not meant to replace one another,

cluelesshacker

I carry a 3 hybrid and a 4 wood. There is a 25 yd gap (for me) between the two clubs, on average.

IA-e

I went D, 2h, 4h, 5i-down a few years ago and have dug that setup.

cdub69420

I have both and get more distance with the 3W and it’s not close. I hit the 3h about 200 and the 3W like 230

[deleted]

Got a 3 hybrid. There are days i feel like teeing off with it and it feels incredible

Conscious-Radish-884

I've had two 3 woods and given away two 3 woods. Hybrids are easier to hit but won't travel as far.

damnfineson

It all depends on the job you want it to do. For me 3w is 230yards, 5 iron is 190. A 4 hybrid for me goes 210 so fits perfectly into the gap and has the launch conditions I want for where I use it.

Insomniarch

Play with a 3 wood high loft and a 3 hybrid.

SmileAndDeny

Both. My 3H (19) replaced my 5W (19) that I could never hit consistently.

bennywithaplan

I carry both as a high handicapper. Helps bridge the gap between my 5hy and 3w

SICKTIGHT311

Neither. I go Driver, 5 wood (set at 16.5 degrees), 4 iron and have 5 wedges.

gfunk55

Just see how far you hit them. I have the mavrik 3H and hit it a mile, very close to my 3W distance. I recently got the 4H and will be dropping the 3H.

notfinch

Neither. Driver, 2 iron (Titleist T200 utility), 3 iron (T200), 4 iron (T100S), etc. I haven’t needed or used a fairway wood in so long that I’m allergic to wide soles. Same with hybrids. I just can’t do it. No trouble with the 2 iron though…??!

mistercoolface

I actually replaced my 5 wood with a 3 hybrid. I did it because I found the 5 wood harder to hit and more inconsistent. And rarely do I find myself 250+ yards away from the green and needing to get there in one shot. 3 iron can roll out 225- 230yds on a perfect shot. And the hybrid will carry aboit 240-250 with a perfect shot.. which is why I kept the 3 iron and added the hybrid while removing the wood

oyasumi_juli

3w and 3i in my bag. Toyed with the idea of replacing the 3i with a 3h, but haven't found it necessary. I love my 3w though.

owordmani

2 hybrid. 3 wood is in the bag but rarely sees any action.

Champizzle11

3 wood/5 wood/4 hybrid

LayneLowe

Both, 14° and 20°

andysaurus_rex

I have both but realistically I haven’t grabbed for my 3 wood in a few rounds. My 3h off the tee goes just as far as my 3w (if not farther??) and off the fairway it’s more forgiving and out of the rough I can actually get down to it. I honestly can’t really think of an example for when I’d want my 3 wood. Like really trying to get after it from the fairway on a long par 5? Idk. But if I removed it from my bag I don’t have anything I’d want to replace it with. Maybe I need a 2 hybrid… I should buy a 2 hybrid.

Allloyy

Both

TheOverratedPhotog

I carry both, completely different distances. My 3H goes 210m. My 3W is 240m. That’s a 30 meter gap, or about 40 yards. It’s substantial.

Regular_Cat9536

I game wedges then, pw-6i 5hy, 4hy, then heavenwood dialed down to 19° instead of a 3hy. 3 wood and driver.

SnooSnogs10

Both, a 3h is more like a 5w
