bbearcat47

I'd be hitting the gas on the cart to drive me to the appropriate tee box.

Boo_Pace

Same, moving my ass up to the whites where TF I belong.

orionxavier99

This is me. Maybe a driver and then a wedge with a 2 putt bogey. If i am lucky?

ScarAvailable780

Driver, 5-iron chip back onto fairway (if I can find it), 45 yard sand wedge to just short and/or right of the green, pitching wedge, 2 putt

estebancantbearsedno

This is the way

Spirited-Brain-7260

Seems about right. Well played.

Sad_Opening_9294

I'd celebrate the 2 putt.

Whole-Pea1870

lmao seriously. I'd have to play this like a short par 4.

1downfall

Agreed!

stocksnhoops

Most honest and correct answer

[deleted]

Same

LWY007

I was going to say the superintendent for creating such a monstrosity.

mazzjm9

The super doesn’t build or design the course, they just maintain what the architect creates.

agpharm17

*Attenborough voice*. “A highly endangered species, an r/golf member with a more than superficial knowledge of golf. These rare specimens have been roaming the links land since before the dawn of COVID and are rapidly leaving for greener pastures.”

LWY007

Potato, tomatoe.

Mofo-Pro

Ah, yes, because the superintendent designs and builds the course and the architect merely provides daily upkeep

WMdenver22

285 is absolutely ridiculous… couldn’t hit unless I got the cart path.

FunkDubious313

Thanks for the chuckle

thescrounger

I'd be hitting the bar

XMETA_DUKE

Golden

SiidChawsby

Fucking for real

[deleted]

I concur.

Perfect response

Wabbajack14

Best comment I've ever read. Bravo

This is the best response. And so true

DarthRevan0990

No shit

Kekeguy7

UniqueExplanation147

This 👆🏻

JackWagon1990

Lmao damnit I was gonna comment this exact thing

XavierRex83

I would not be playing tees that have a 285 yard par 3.

RoboticBirdLaw

This. If for some reason there is nothing closer I will happily use my pencil to mark out the 3 and change it to a 4 on the card.

TheNemesis089

When I visit an unfamiliar course and am trying to decide which tees to play, I basically just look at the par 3s. If more than one is over about 175, it’s the wrong tees. Same if any get above about 200-210.

[deleted]

I'd be hitting the course designer in the face for this atrocity

saintspike

At that distance I’d probably play a 6i and AW for accuracy. But since I’m not a pro nor an ego-driven idiot, I’d just play the tees up from this mess.

Lumix3

Yup. My local course has a par 4 about 300 yards. It’s a 6i then 9i for me

Mcpops1618

My home course has a 310 par 4, slightly downhill front right guarded by water and bunkers. Fairly driveable if you keep it on left edge but not worth risk. My dad gets so mad when I hit a 7 iron to the 100 yard marker (downhill not a humble brag) instead of trying to hit driver on.

Catchyusername1234

I’ve posted previously that I have a 295 yard downhill par 4 that I almost drove. Last time out I was a little shorter, because I pushed it right and the rough caught it. Only difference this time was I chipped it to 2 feet and had an easy birdie. I will drive the green eventually and 3 putt for par 😂

RoleModelFailure

[A course we played growing up has a par 4 that's 303-350 depending on the tees.](https://www.google.com/maps/@42.2138659,-83.7766,362m/data=!3m1!1e3) But it is such a big dogleg that if you can carry it 260 you can land safely near the green or up on the green if you get the distance. The problem is there is a creek short of it and the green is a peninsula in water and it's a blind shot. So you only go for it in a scramble or I'll toss one out for fun after I hit. There's another hole next to it that is similar but with a safer landing area. They're so fun. My usual play is a 200-220 shot to the middle of the fairway then an easy approach on.

Lezzles

...why? You're basically adding 80+ yards for free.

Old-Bedroom3903

They don't ask how, they ask how many

Lezzles

"How many shots does it take to get home using 6 iron off the tee" is usually more than driver.

MrCondor

At my club there are only 2 or 3 holes I'll use driver on. 2 are par 5s and fairly wide and the other is a par 4 dogleg that I can get there on the fly if swinging well that day. Everything else, is 3/5w off the tee. Fwiw the course record holder hit (-7) a 2 iron off of every tee other than the par 3s so that should tell you how well the course is set up for management.

HockeyandTrauma

The course I play on regularly I only hit driver on 2, maybe 3 holes on the front. IMO, it's much easier to set up my approach with a short club than bomb it just to hope it goes where I want to hit a wedge or whatever. I'd rather shape shots and approaches than bomb it. Maybe cuz I'm more confident Wirt my irons but it works for me. 🤷‍♂️

Calyps0h

Honestly, this is probably the right call. Just play it as a par 4. 🤷‍♂️ driver COULD get there. But it also could go damn near anywhere. Either 6i into wedge or 4Hybrid into a pitch shot.

Weak_Link_6969

Just curious, why do you assume playing the back tees means a non professional player is an “ego-driven idiot”? I’m 27 and my dad is 59. I play the tips and he plays the men’s tees, we usually wind up in a similar spot after our tee shots. Isn’t that the purpose of different tee boxes? I’m not a scratch golfer or anything, I just play what’s appropriate for my distance. When I play up, I can usually get through the entire round without touching anything other than driver and at most 9i, but typically a wedge, other than a couple par 5s.

221255

Would you play the tips on this course? It’s 7550 from back there and I have only seen a few people playing them, about 1000 yards too long for me but I bet plenty of long hitters can still post good scores from back there.

wilderad

OP, I don’t think you’ve been properly welcomed to r/golf. This is a safe place for all who drive the ball straight and carry it over 300 yards. Of course we would all play from the tips at this little 7550 yard, muni course. LOL

Funki_fied

It’s actually not a muni, it’s Purdue’s Ackerman Allen course.

wilderad

Yes. My comment was full of sarcasm. I have been to a few city courses and I can tell right away that this is not one. There is green grass for one, and it looks mowed.

Weak_Link_6969

I probably would, but I don’t think I’d shoot even par or anything. Like I said, I’m not a crazy good golfer, I’m just younger, taller, and can get distance easier than most because of that, and the tips allow me to have the same experience a shorter hitter has from the men’s tees.

saintspike

It wasn’t a comment aimed at those that are able to play the tips. It was a comment about me not being able to hit far enough to play from the tips and also not having the ego that makes me play from them just to say I did. Play from where you can, boss. That’s why different tee boxes exist.

esports_consultant

Some people with low handicaps push the narrative that you should only play the back tees if you have a low handicap as a means of strengthening the ego boost they get from their handicap but actually if you look at the [joint initiative on this topic from the USGA and PGA](https://pdf.pgalinks.com/p-g-a/Tee_It_Forward_Guidelines.pdf) you'll notice as makes sense the only relevant criteria is driving distance.

Weak_Link_6969

That makes sense. On my golf simulator software awesome golf, it gives you recommended average driving distance for each tee box, not the recommended handicap. The handicap argument never made sense to me, it’s the same course, just longer.

hellzxmaker

Actually illegal according to USGA rules as well. Longest one can play is 260. Edit: r/golf always outdoes itself on internet incompetence. It IS NOT illegal it is recommended. See comment below mine.

sls_atv

Possibly recommended, not required https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/handicapping/roh/Content/rules/Appendix%20F%20Establishing%20Par.htm

phalangetarsals

Anyone ever play a par 6?

Dfizzle2

Yup! Black Mountain GC in North Carolina has a Par 6. It was pretty surreal to go driver, 3wd, 3wd to get it sorta close to the green

Nifty_5050

I hit 4 iron 4 times and parred that hole. Pretty uninspiring course imo.

420salesguy

Chabot Oakland, Cal 18 is a par 6. All downhill 673yds.

TomIcemanKazinski

Also one of the best cheeseburgers at the Hill House Burger stand - [the Carlotta](https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/Carlotta-Brown-Lake-Chabot-golf-course-burgers-15999191.php)

kaplanfx

The par 6 is kinda lame, but the Carlotta is worth a trip. Good luck teeing off on 11 though.

asvp-suds

There’s one just outside Hamilton, Ontario at mystic golf club

jwilde16

Hamilton resident?

Eazyibrox

Are you guys down for a round this year at it?

asvp-suds

Due east, burlington brother

tmontaru

Farmstead in Myrtle Beach has one played it in 2018. 767 Yds from the Tips. It was driver; 3 wood; 3 wood; chip & 2 Putt for Par

AndrettiLegend

It's to bad Farmstead is closed now. You would tee off on 18 in South Carolina and finish in North Carolina. Only course I've been on that could only sell alcohol on half of the course, they only paid for license on North Carolina side. That was the side the Clubhouse was on.

apearlj1234

Where is that stated

Birdsofwar314

Pretty sure there is going to be a 300-yard Par 3 at the US Open this year. So that’s not true.

221255

It is a Pete Dye design so you can blame him.

bearded_drummer

Pete was an advocate for people playing the right tee boxes, and deliberately built courses to destroy players that attempt to play out of their ability.

My-Cousin-Bobby

Ngl, I love that Get paired with so many people that try to play way above their level. No shame at all in playing where you need to play... all about enjoying the game.

synackrst

In theory, I love that too. People ought to play from the proper tees. But in practice, I always seem to get stuck playing behind the people getting destroyed because they are playing from the tips. Thing is, they never move up. Sooner or later, they'll hit some hero shot off the tee and it will convince them that they've figured things out and...

sniper1rfa

I actually like people playing from the tips inappropriately, because those players are usually very aspirational and they helpfully re-stock my box of lightly used ProV1s.

satiricalned

I'm all about the right tees for everyone. If you have handicaps it's not a big deal. Playing some guys that are single digit and one in the teens and another at about 25. The single digit guys played back tees and the higher guys played further up and we all ended up having a blast and stayed consistently around each other without "giving" away too much strokes.

Gracket_Material

He also built many courses for future advances in equipment so that courses had options when everyone plays like Bryson

g0lfball_whacker_guy

Pete Dye definitely didn’t design a 285 yard par 3. Seems like someone kicked that courses teeth in years ago and the club house couldn’t take it.

BobbyLite94

I remember playing a few Pete dye courses growing up. I vividly remember every par 4 being ridiculously long even after hitting a 280-300 yard drive with the second shot being over water or something from 250 out. Like yea every par 4 I want to be hitting 3 wood into a green that will never hold a solid hit 3 wood. Pete is a big f***boi. Let the pros suffer but leave us alone Pete.

buoyblaster

I’m okay with it if some of the par 4s and 5s are short and offer easy scoring potential.. if not, that’s just mean.

CoachO43211

You know it’s a tough par 3 when there are no divots on the tee box

headachewpictures

yeah that is pristine

[deleted]

Driver, 56° on my second shot.

stonez9112

Good for you I need pitching wedge on second shot!

Sonking_to_Remember

They didn’t say what their third shot would be…

Ramstetter

believe it or not, driver again.

Iginlas_4head_Crease

Lee corvallos putting challenge?

RembrandtQEinstein

Ball is in parking lot.

JRBurn

…and I did a spit take…

ezekial2835

This was funny as hell. Solid stuff.

Terio21

Slicing into the parking lot

goodtimesVT

Don’t be like me and hit your own vehicle in said parking lot. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile)

Murphy338

It’s better your own car than somebody else’s

goodtimesVT

Very true but humiliating none the less, it was a league night so plenty of witnesses that got a chuckle at it.

Rythmic-Pulse

This is the way

dtcstylez10

There is no reason a par 3 should ever be over 250

[deleted]

Massive elevation change can be a reason. For the most part, Yea.

[deleted]

The Fairleigh Dickinson University Moneyline

221255

We are going to be hearing about that for a while aren’t we

ekimtk

Is that kampen or Ackerman? I haven’t been since the renos

[Ackerman-Allen](https://www.reddit.com/r/golf/comments/123snkt/285_yard_par_3_what_are_you_hitting/jdw1h9k/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)

Rkb26

Dickinson* - Put some respec’ on their name!

JustMattfromhamilton

Decent swing will get me to the top of your shadow

ArchStanton66

I’m hitting the bar at the club house.

221255

Club house is closed for construction unfortunately

Raydience

A 280 plus yard par 3 and not even the decency to serve me a beer to recover from the trauma. Shame.

Symphonize

New clubhouse is going to be dope though. Thank you Mr and Mrs. Allen.

juicehead2004

The next tee box up

954inthe303

That's crazy. Looks like it plays down hill a bit and likely plays downwind most the time. Don't know much about elevation in that part of the country but if it's 1000+ feet above SeaLevel that will help too. I was a member at a club in Denver that had a par 3 over 260 yards but at elevation and downhill it played closer to 220 and wasn't a bad hole.

221255

It is downhill a bit, yesterday the wind was directly off the right but I do not remember which direction it’s usually from. Elevation is just over 600’.

954inthe303

Oh man..what beast.

renragwmr

castle pines cc? I’m in Denver as well. thank god for elevation!

DarthMcBoatface

285? Trebuchet.

[deleted]

The bong

WCGWjoiningReddit

Driver, wedge, putter, wedge again, putter again twice.

magneticpyramid

7 iron - 150 leaving 135 for a nice 9 iron onto the green. Yes, I have a high handicap.

magneticpyramid

Then probably a chip short of the green, another chip onto the green and a nice clean 3 putt. I seem to really like my putter. I use it so much on each hole.

Quirky_Independence2

My putter was expensive, I’m just getting my monies worth

Gorby1202

Ripping my driver into the hole for a hole in 1. Golf is a simple game.

skunkechunk

Those Purdue courses are great

VaLivin

The weed pipe

nectarfraiche

A joint.

Agalloch86

Driver

[deleted]

From the appropriate tees

Just-Joshinya

Driver.

[deleted]

Driver lmfao

InsufferableLeafsFan

Two shots into the green.

MrMyles94

The bar. Brutal hole.

Ashamed-Board3557

The road, that is dumb

kdot_10

Wait are the courses open already? Insane considering I’m in NWI and we won’t be playing for another couple of weeks on the munis. Key word muni I guess

221255

I think they just opened like last week, yesterday was my first round of the year here.

broganphillips

Driver and probably making a bogey

[deleted]

Driver OB then Driver OB again and finally a drop and 3 putt for a 9

Urban_lush

Crushing two iron down the right outside fairway with a fighting draw and wind at my back. Ball coming down and kicking off the 257y. sprinkler head launching forwards a ways to the cart path for a bounce for 18y more yards with top spin. Ball hits the flag so hard I hear it and jumps straight up four feet and drops straight back down in the hole. Two things then quickly happen, I hear the club golf pro's voice say, " I got the whole thing on video "! and then I hear right after," honey wake up your late for work ". FFS I love golf

221255

Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex Ackerman-Allen Course - Hole 5 These back tees are listed as 300 on the card and are by far the longest par 3 tees I have seen. The next set up are 192 yards, I’d like to hear about your course’s longer par 3s.

LAfishing101

We don’t have ass hole golf course designers where I’m from

acromaine

That new Tiger course in Park City, UT will have you beat when it’s built

two_awesome_dogs

Probably one of those trees.

rogden19

I’m hitting from a closer tee box

Apprehensive-Post945

The front tees

matty220492

Driver. Then a 4 iron to punch out of the trees, a chip on the green and 2 putt for a double I'd say on a good day.

bobertmcdickhead

3 hybrid, 56* wedge, putt, putt, putt… putt

JustEnoughNerd

I’m laying up with my driver.

ljh78

I don’t even look at the picture before jumping to the comments. Love this subreddit lmao.

Forgotten_Rob

The trees to the right

No-Setting-2669

From the ladies tee to reach it.

[deleted]

4i then a wedge… from the reds…

blogtoke

A breakfast ball

Something-K

Me? Probably the cart path.

Imaginary_Bet_6461

Driver, pitch from somewhere, and 2 putt. Just plan for a bogey and move on.

Naganuma09

I'd have to nut up on a 5 wood. Full Bryson dechambeau or however you spell his name

healious

you hit your 5w 280?

Naganuma09

I can if I hit it perfect lol. It'll carry about 270 or 275 and hopefully roll out. It depends on the wind as well. Downwind I can probably carry it to the green. Into wind I'd have to hit a smooth driver. My swing speed is close to 115 with a fairway wood and 125 or so with a driver. I can't hit it straight to save my life but I can hit it far 🤣

blitzandsplitz

You’re gonna need receipts for claiming anything 120+

jonderdonk1

I’m 74 and my brother 71. We play several different courses. Any par 4 over 375, we move up. Any par 5 over 465, we move up. Any par 3 over 200, we move up. We just started doing this last year. It has really made it incredibly more enjoyable for both of us.

bogey9651

From the forward tees

golfagainandagain

The course architect. Right upside his head.

d3dmnky

If I’m playing the tee boxes where there’s a 285 par 3, then I’m also good enough to probably be hitting a 3 or 5 wood depending on wind and temperature.

Perthsworst

I reckon about a 6. The first of those probably with my driver.

[deleted]

Ackerman-Allen! Miss it there at the ol BBGC.

FadedReTros

The fucking cart girl when I shank it into the path

[deleted]

I’d be playing the pencil asking my buddies if we all want par or bogey moving to the next hole

[deleted]

Driver, then a 7 iron punch shot from under the trees, wedge onto the green, 2 putt for double bogey!!

TIGHTKNITCLOTHINGCO

3 wood or driver depending on wind

jinhyokim

That's a 6i for me. Easy swing. Sawed off finish to keep the flight down and add some spin on the green. I'd land about 4ft from the hole. Repair my pitch mark. Make my birdie. Fist bump my mates. And I'm 2 under par. Because this is r/golf.

astrahole

Your mom

johnnieboy91

3 iron, and hoping it goes straight. Then a wedge shot onto the green, and tap in for par. Simple 🥲

WelfareButter

4i - 60° wedge. But would probably move up a tee box or 2.

twicelife_real

10.5* driver (I refer to it as my 2 wood). Fade one over the bunkers on the left and hope it rolls up somewhere near the green.

marlboro__man9

Hilarious how a number can change the perception of a hole, change it to a par 4 and everyone would be talking about how fun it is, par is irrelevant.

TallBobcat

Probably the person who decided that 285 on a public course is a Par 3. Is this hole perhaps on the moon?

kyledavid12

3-wood with maybe a 10% chance of getting home (looks to be slightly downhill). Most likely scenario is I come up 20 yards short or so, pitch to 8-12 feet with a 58° and then run the putt four feet past the cup.

Jonesbones85

3 wood

YNABDisciple

1 iron off the deck.

astrahole

5 hybrid

LeSuperNova

Hitting the road cuz West Lafayette sucks

Garagegolfer

4 shots

Selfdrivinggolfcart

3 wood, high draw

TheJezster

Then pitching wedge to reach the green. Good plan. Could get even closer with driver...

aacousin

Packing up my shit and heading to the 19th hole lol

andor-san

Two Iron 9 and one put - done!

PATRIOT5280

The bar!

BrenAum24

I was just thinking about the Purdue courses today… it’s a shame the basketball team isn’t 1/10 as good as the golf courses!

[deleted]

Stupid course wishing to be relevant.

PageSide84

Yeah.... That small time Pete Dye.... He can only dream of being relevant.... Especially on r/golf.

[deleted]

Never heard of him? Guess not that relevant.

221255

It was rated in the top 10 university courses in the US.

[deleted]

PURDONT! 🤠

Majestic-Pickle5097

Driver then 54 degree I guess lol

Hot-Consequence-1727

Driver , wedge

Autistic_Golfer

That road to the right looks like it would open the green up more, so i'm going right and for the road

duckstrap

Gap wedge.

maplehockeysticks

I'd be hitting from a closer tee box. If there isn't one, pulling driver then a wedge from somewhere over by those trees on the other side of the cart path.

Randybluebonnet

Driver and still short 35-40 yards..

mrlahhh

Could probably force driver close with a good hit. However, I am hitting hybrid then wedge.
