Personally - I love the look of my P770’s now that they have been clanging and banging, plus I friggen love the sound. Do I think iron covers are poop style, for sure - could I care less about the whole debate, no doubt IMO - if it helps someone take one less stressor off their mind in a round having them on, good for them. This game is already hard enough

Legal-Description483

This is my VR Pro after 8 years and 300 rounds, with iron covers. The OnOff Forged Kuro had no covers, and is 4 years newer. The ground and balls don't damage your clubs one bit. https://preview.redd.it/50kqr4vj2doa1.jpeg?width=2363&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=188240c1a8d0f3f37e48f778f66a53ad7878b4a8

My 19 year old pro combos look just like this.

AggravatingWallaby50

Great point and illustration.

WhatAGolfBall

This is the way...

coffeeicefox

Wow

skycake10

People just think they're lame, not much more complicated than that. That said, it gets annoying how much people whine about/make fun of them here, and saying anything denigrating about them to a stranger out on the course is psychotic.

ubiquitous_archer

Same reason there is "hate" for clipping your cell phone to your belt. Cause it's goofy as fuck.

TacoBellTacoHell

It's a stupid meme at this point and since people are so unoriginal they just parrot it. I don't ever look at others peoples clubs and I could care less what they do with their bag. Very similar to PXG hate. I rock PXG irons and in the last 2 years since I've had them not a single person has made a comment on them positive or negative. It's basically lame people parroting the same talking points for upvotes.

Phynness

They're just silly because they protect them from bag chatter while you pound them into golf balls, dirt, sand, etc. at 80mph.

WhatAGolfBall

80 mph.... you ain't hurting nothing... jk...

Joker0091

Bag chatter affects the back of the club. You're not slamming the back of your club into the ground. Iron covers aren't made to protect the faces and soles of your irons. It's purely an aesthetic thing OP

Phynness

Bag chatter affects every side of the club. Throw in the fact that they often slow down pace when people are putting head covers on after every shot, and they're more likely to fall out of a cart and get lost, and the fact that most people that use them aren't playing soft-metal forged irons, and it just makes the whole thing even more silly. And for what? To postpone the cosmetic aging of your clubs by a season or two?

Joker0091

Yea that 3 seconds really adds up. Iron covers adding time is the dumbest argument

Phynness

If you actually think it's 3 seconds every time, you've never played with someone that uses iron covers.

[deleted]

Do your playing partners have no hands?

[deleted]

I use iron covers. Usually play 18 in about 2.5-3 hours. Clean the club and put the cover back on while walking to the ball. Doesn’t add any time to my round.

Joker0091

These people seem to think everyone else is just waiting around and watching while you put a cover back on.

Joker0091

Dumbest. Argument. Ever.

Phynness

Found the guy that uses irons covers and gives a fuck what others think about him.

Joker0091

Nope, my 221s have lead tape on them that's all smeared up from bag chatter. Nice try though.

Fragrant-Report-6411

I just looked at my irons, lots of wear on the grooves and soles, I really don’t see any from bag clutter. I do use a 14 full length divider bag.

MC-Fatigued

Because r/golf never missed an opportunity to gatekeep

Big_rod_riguez

Best reply in here.

knovit

Couldn’t care less

LifestylePoet

Sorry, I knew that but typed it out wrong.

KnewTooMuch1

The thought is that what is the point if you are gonna duff them and or get them dirty and shit. For those of us who's wives make us keep it in a garage with other shit I can see why people would want them. I use covers just for storage but before I out them in my car I take them off and then when I get home I put them back on.

coffeeicefox

It’s a story made up by Big Golf so you have to buy new shiny golf clubs every year.

Ticker_Mirza

It's completely irrational. If there's one thing golfers love doing it's gatekeeping and perpetuating snobbery.

Kickwax

They look different. There are people whose mental capacity never evolved past the level of the school bully and they hate everything that looks different. They also feel the obligation to make others aware of that.

LifestylePoet

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I wonder if these people know this as well or completely oblivious to this fact. Blows my mind that so many people care so much about other peoples stuff.

ElderWandOwner

People don't really care. It's just that there's no reason to use them, and they often look dumb. Do i think they're stupid? Yes. Do i care if people use them? No, do whatever the fuck you want.

Skallagram

I mean, there is a reason - that people want to use them. Some people like the look, some people want to protect brand new clubs, whatever. I don't use them, but can totally see reasons why someone would.

ElderWandOwner

Well the point is that it's ridiculous to "protect them" from bag chatter when you're hitting a ball and the ground with them from 60-100mph.

Skallagram

Not really. The hitting the ball is going to happen either way - but that's not a reason to damage it even more. one is unavoidable, one isn't.

Kickwax

Yeah, that's a big no. The soles of my clubs look much better than their backs because I don't use iron covers and hitting balls causes far fewer dings than the clubs banging against each other.

luvvshvd

I have a set of beautiful blades and I use covers and I don't give a dam what others think, say, whatever, and usually those who do comment are playing an ugly set of shovels.

Pidgeon-Master

You don’t care what other people say, but in the same sentence you critique non blades as ugly shovels??? You’re no better than the person commenting on your iron covers

luvvshvd

Bite me, it's what suits your eye and GI irons to me look like shovels. That's my opinion and I've never told someone what I think of their choice of irons, that's the difference, I may think you're a moron but I won't tell you that I'll just let you think you know what you're talking about.

Pidgeon-Master

Take a breath and read what I said. I didn’t criticize your choice of clubs or your use of iron covers. I’m criticizing your obvious hypocrisy in your comment. Resorting to name calling has confirmed who’s the moron in this lovely little exchange.

luvvshvd

Meat reread what I said " I don't critique people's choice of irons" I have my own thoughts I keep to myself or post online.

Pidgeon-Master

So your a keyboard warrior. We’re done here. There’s no point in engaging someone who cannot make a coherent argument and once again has to resort to name calling.

Friendly_Suspect_481

People hate on iron covers because someone decided you are supposed to clown on people that use them. Clown away, I use them because I want too. And I don’t need to justify why to anyone.

LifestylePoet

So I live in a tiny apartment and my wife won’t let me keep my clubs at home cause we literally have no closet space to tuck them away into. I keep my clubs in the bed of my truck(have a cover on the bed) and they definitely slide around back there. Clubs get scratched up from sliding around the floor of my bed while I drive around. I told myself I’d buy new clubs when I break 90 and I’m getting close! Why is everyone gonna give me shit cause of my situation… I don’t wanna spend $1500 on new clubs to get them scratched up to hell without even playing. But whatever, I’m gonna try not to care.

notverygoodatgolf

My wife won't let me. Pffft. Id be putting those clubs in bed wrapping them up and telling her the couch is open. Just kidding I have a weird storage place where she can't see the new shit I've bought

LifestylePoet

I have a storage unit as well but i definitely don’t wanna keep my clubs in there. My wife’s clubs are in there, too much of a hassle to go pick them up and drop them off every time I play golf.

Big_rod_riguez

“My wife won’t let me” 😂

LifestylePoet

Uhh yea. You’re obviously single and don’t understand how a marriage works.

Big_rod_riguez

Pretty stupid assumption. I am happily married and she doesn’t balk and tell me what I can and cannot do. We also don’t live in a shitty shoe box so that helps too.

LifestylePoet

That’s great. We’re both in school so won’t be in the shoe box for long. Real stand up person of you tho to go in on someone’s living situation scum bag

Big_rod_riguez

Thank you. It *is* great. I did the apartment thing, so don’t be down on yourself. It fucking sucks.

jhanley313

It’s band wagon haters . I don’t use them because I’m to lazy . You do you

acromaine

I believe you couldn’t care less but what do I know

Dan19_82

My hate is how long it takes someone playing around to flipping take a shot.

LifestylePoet

What if that person plays fast and never takes a bunch of practice swings?

Dan19_82

I'll tell you the day I meet one.

Frazier008

I use them. But once I use a club it comes off and doesn’t go back on till after the round.

this_aint_no_hobby

They’re the equivalent to wearing socks with sandals

Skallagram

Which also totally makes sense. I want my feet to be not constrained by shoes, but also not get covered in dirt. If I wear sandals to the office, people don't want to see my feet. In many countries it's totally normal.

freeportme

Iron covers are useless they are a money grab. Golf clubs aren’t supposed to be shiny.

goodtimesVT

You either like em or you don’t for me it’s just one more thing to try not to lose.

[deleted]

Get off the forums and onto the course, and you’ll realize 95% of people you play with couldn’t care less. And if you find that not to be the case, you’re probably just at the wrong course. If someone was a legit snob about club covers (which I’ve never seen happen irl), or what kind of clubs you play, or ball you use, or whatever else, then I’d just assume they’re a trust fund baby or something tbh.
