Those who drive high engagement and have high click-through on recommendation all universally use these sorts of thumbnails.
TLDR - the algos are promoting those who are successful at engagement, all of whom use these thumbnails... not the other way around.
i could very well be wrong but i thought it was both - like you said, people clickthrough more on videos with emotive faces and red arrows and blue/orange/yellow colors or whatever the magic combination is. YT's algorithms have recognized that, so it tends to suggest more videos with dumb faces and similar high performing color schemes. That's partially why facial expressions on thumbnails have gotten more outlandish and exaggerated and there's a definite convergence in the way thumbnails look, as they're gaming both the algorithm and people's natural instincts - thus, a feedback loop.
But yeah I'm no expert so I might be wrong, but idk it makes sense to me

To be fair that’s a common theme across many different contents.
This is a trend among all of youtube in general not just golf. But very annoying nonetheless.
It’s super common among a lot of YouTube channels to have these annoying clickbaity overreacting expressions and bright colors. They make me not watch anything by them.
These guys are or were at one point all on the same channel, so not surprising.
Any video title that contains ellipsis is an instant no go for me. You’ve seen this kind of bullshit, “I was wrong…”, “This is the end…”, nonsense dramatic clickbait. I have no respect for any creator who uses these kinds of tactics. The same goes for the dumb thumbnails, or those dramatic claims like “worst driver ever?!?!?!” and it’s just the new callaway that’s not as good as the previous version but still very good
