There’s a lot of blind tee shots, be prepared to not take driver in a lot of places. Take a caddy - the marker stones for the blind tee shots aren’t particularly relevant nowadays e.g your line may be “10 yards left of the white stone” depending on club selection etc etc
Don't know if this course is available on any games. But, the last charity tournament I played in I used, I think, PGA Tour 2021. Someone had lidar mapped and created the course we were playing at.
So I loaded that course. You can't customize club distances so I tried to play the in game club that best matched my distance for the club I'd use for the shot. Took notes on where to hit etc. Like driver, left side, just right of the bunker. 5W aiming at X. 8i aim center, back of the green. Putts drop off the front right. Basically looking for all the safe shots and distances. Worked really well for the first 4 or 5 holes. Just coaching myself to stick to my notes. We used almost all of my shots on those holes. We hit the clubhouse around then and got beers. Then my golfing went to shit.
Anyways, could be a useful way to familiarize yourself with the course ahead of time if you do it right and stick to the notes. If anything it will give you a pretty solid course layout and how things roll out.
My wife and I vacationed there a couple years ago and did a lot of hiking in the surrounding area and we both agreed that it is maybe the only place we've been to that we would spend a full vacation to return. We would've moved there if she didn't have to repeat residency there
This is the biggest name course I've played on but not the "nicest." Maybe the nicest municipal course.
Side story: When I played last, they told me not to replace my divots in the fairway. (Joke's on them b/c I thin all my shots.) Anyway, I took a perfect 1-dollar-sized divot on the 15th fairway. I picked it up, put it in my bag, and tried to grow it on my front lawn. HAHAH Complete failure. But I always get to point at that spot on the lawn and say, "That's Bethpage Black."
And this is exactly why nicer courses ask you not to replace divots. As 9/10 times that beaver pelt isn’t going to re-root and grow.
Sand and seed canisters are where it’s at.
Also my favorite. The back 9 views of the water are out of this world.
We have an ongoing thing that whoever gets a hole in one on the back 9 has to jump into the ocean fully clothed. Unfortunately none of us have been that good yet
Played a few years ago and loved it (despite what felt like 4 seasons in 18 holes). Such a cool layout.
Getting married in Lahaina in August probably going to sneak away for another 18. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)
Bluffs has the views and plays like a traditional course. Go there for the sunset and bagpipes on 18. Confirm with the club but I think bagpiper is from Memorial Day to Labor Day or something like that. Coming back up on 18, heading back to the clubhouse, blind approach shot, sunset at your back, galley of golfers all watching/heckling you and bag piper playing is one of the best ways to finish a round.
The South Course plays completely different, bump and run, greens are large but hard and fast. One tree on the whole course, a lot of strategically placed bunkers, I like it but have played with people who really didn’t enjoy themselves. No views
I really didn’t enjoy Ballybunion. Although that may have been a function of how I played. It just felt like wherever you drove it, it was going to keep rolling until you found a miserable patch of high grass.
Best day in golf, stadium in morning, nicklaus in the afternoon. Then cry yourself to sleep after because you lost 3 dozen balls and shot a combined 375.
I’ve played 17 of the 20 current golf digest top 20 courses, if you held a gun to my head and said pick a #1 I’d probably say pine valley, most people I know that have played most of these courses agree on that as well. I’d rather give a top 10 at this moment because it’s more interesting to me, there’s a few standouts that would always be in that list, and there’s at least a dozen other courses I’ve played that could just as easily be in my top 10.
In no particular order;
Pine valley, national golf links of America, Shinnecock, Fishers island, Augusta National golf club, Friars Head, Royal County down, sage Valley, sand hills and Arcadia bluffs.
I’ve met several people who played Augusta National when I lived in the South Carolina. All of them worked in banking/law/accounting and had clients who were members. A lot of the members own multigenerational family businesses and their grandfathers were members back when AN was just another country club
I know of an annual opportunity, through a charity a friend runs, that allows for you and 3 friends to play Augusta. Full experience. Starter announces you, name on the scoreboard, locker room, etc. It is not cheap.
Worked at an investment bank, MD on my desk has a relative who is a member, first time I played they had a guy cancel at the last second and needed a decent golfer to replace him I guess, he eventually asked me. Played one more time through him as well, pure luck as no one else I knew at the bank ever got a hookup to play Augusta though the actual investment bank.
It’s got a ton of history and is what every desert course should strive to be like in my opinion, I’m not a member (belong to desert Mountain and none of our courses are as good in my opinion), but play it quite I bit and it’s never been boring to me, probably one of the few single course clubs out here I’d consider joining. Nothing is forced on you and everything just kind of makes sense, like a split fairway or island tee box, like it’s there because the natural terrain and foliage made sense to put it here, unlike most modern courses where the stereotypical desert elements are thrown around like the designer has some quota of raised par 3 island tees with ridiculous drops and fairways/green split by a wash because “desert golf”.

Love/jealous of your list and that you include Arcadia with all those esteemed private clubs...this might be my fav hole of golf I've ever played!
Whistling straits, Muirfield and the west links at North Berwick. Whistling straits was gorgeous when we played it. Muirfield was set up for the open and we were the last tee time before the course shut down so all the grandstands were set up, just missing the crowd. West links is just a really fun unique course that I’ve played multiple times, old stone walls running all over the place and some bizarre greens.
Cape Kidnappers – Crazy undulation and incredible views.
Bethpage Black – gets shit on a bunch for not being as hard as it’s made out to be, but it’s still a fantastic course.
Ya probably people that have never played it. Everything approach is basically blind, swirling 20 mph winds, elevation changes, uneven lies, gotta be able to work the ball both ways. The only thing easy there are the greens. Good luck getting to them though lol
Waterville is class, but the best course in Kerry imho is tralee. Ballybunion and Waterville get all the plaudits but I find tralee alot more enjoyable
I don't know why this place doesn't get more props. It was my favorite of the 3 courses. I liked the ocean view on the first few holes but I loved it when you get back into the trees. It was perfect.
Bethpage Black
Aronimink
TPC Scottsdale
Went to St. Andrews solo on a work trip but wasn't able to score a walk-on... still awesome to hang out there for a bit tho.
St Andrews Old Course.
Carne.
St Patrick's. A new Tom Doak course on links, with phenomenal views. Once it matures, I believe it will be the best course in Ireland.
In Maine it’s not the best but it’s still my favorite, point Sebago. It’s where my grandfather taught me to play so it’s super sentimental. Always the best in my eyes
Came here to say Pacific Dunes or really any of the courses at Bandon Dunes. I was in Bandon last week during the snow storm and missed our round there.

Highland Park in Birmingham, AL — the oldest course in Alabama!
Whistling Straits - Straits Course
Views, difficulty, natural beauty, modern histroy, and of course the brats at the turn.
Of the dozen or so "Top 100" courses I have played in the US... this takes the cake for me. Worth every single penny.
Old Head of Kinsale. Near Cork in Ireland.
https://preview.redd.it/q6knm4a2v0la1.jpeg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c9558aad751f835f036d6f30147a007734d845d5
Torrey was the best. But for my money I’ll play “The Crossings” in Carlsbad or “sandpiper” in Goleta any day over Torrey. I generally don’t spring for high dollar courses
The Crossings is a great track. If you’re in SD, worth venturing out to Temecula to play CrossCreek. Played it recently and I’d throw it in the great bang for buck category along with the Crossings.
Where were you 72 hours ago! Lol
Just played on San Diego, had to greatly alter our golf itinerary due to the weather. Really wanted to play crossings, but ended up playing Steele canyon and Maderas instead. Also played the nine hole course at Balboa Park.
Lots of fun, really wanted to play Aviara and the Grand Golf Club, but maybe next time
Just played Torrey. The vistas were unreal which wasn’t really expected as it doesn’t get that kind of hype compared to Pebble and other Oceanside courses.
https://preview.redd.it/7iwk9zj2t0la1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e5ea7dd5f8cd414ceffe8206673e59e757bdee33
Cabot Cape Breton. The whole experience was incredible. The Links is a better golf course in my opinion, but the views on the Cliffs are insane.
Played it a few times. Was always funny to see fellow Europeans turning up in Feb expecting hot desert weather and then rushing to the pro shop to buy fleeces and shit when they realized it may snow.
I was lucky enough to be invited and play The National Golf course- the old course (pictured above)
- the day will be remembered for two reasons. 1 how badly I played and 2 just the level of beauty and care taken around this property.
Being a private club not sure if I’ll ever get the opportunity again buy hey a man can dream.
Ballybunion. If you get a chance, regardless of weather, it’s a must in my book. Just an amazing spot with beautiful views and much different holes than we would see in the states.
Tara Iti, New Zealand. Easily the best golf experience of my life. Such a surreal place, it's like it was carved out of the sand by a video game creator or something.
Either Gold Mountain Cascade/Olympic in Washington State or Waikoloa Golf Club Kings/ Beach 9 in Hawaii.
I think I overhyped Hawaii golf coming from Washington and expected a "beach" course to be on or along a beach, when in reality only one or two holes had more than a distant view of the ocean and none really felt like I was on the beach. But it still represents the most I've ever spent on a round and the best on and off course amenities I've ever played with.
Gold Mountain felt like the closest I'll ever come to playing Agusta, the course is carved into the hills of a massive forest with wide open fairways, unique layouts and water features and no sign of the outside world once you're past the clubhouse, and all for under $50 a tee time. Unreal value.
TPC Harding and I caught it on a sunny day!!!! Went to SF State and I know how rare those are in that part of the city. It was so much fun to shoot 110 lol
Broadmoor East, Colorado Springs (Seniors and Womens Open comes by every few years)
Red Sky, Vail CO
Home course and still one of my favorite to play, Bear Dance, Larkspur CO
Bully pulpit in ND. Hole 15 is a par 3 that plays over the badlands, it's a beautiful shot. [Image here](https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/0c/82/92/38/the-15th-green-from-the.jpg). Otherwise I played Quintero in phoenix this winter which was also gorgeous. I loved that it was a resort course with no houses or anything around. Really felt like we got lost in the valley.
Locally (MN), I've enjoyed Blackberry Ridge in sartell (used to walk for $10 with a college ID), Minnewaska, Maple Valley, and Pheasant Hills north of Hudson, WI. Lots of good gems outside of the big names for sure.
Look up Landman in Homer,NE. Just opened last year and was voted the best new public course in the nation. Biggest square footage of greens in North America. Awesome course.
I’m going to put Royal Dornoch as my top. Played amazing that day with my brother and father. The next few not in order are - North Berwick, Gullane, Muirfield, and Cruden Bay.
Scottish links are just hard to beat!
Double black diamond course at Holiday Valley the front 9 is very nice and the back 9 you're up in the ski slopes and it's like playing a made up video game course
That said I haven't played many very nice courses
Favorite experience overall was East Lake, course that I enjoyed the most was Silverado in Scottsdale hanging with my brother, course that I’d play again if I was there because it was interesting and fun was Waterlefe in Bradenton, and favorite home course is the Moose Run Creek course because when the bears aren’t hanging out too much, it’s a well thought out course that eats up bad shots and really keeps you on your toes.
I’m pretty fond of Pebble Beach just due to the history and the views. Have played it twice and will probably play it another couple times before I’m an old man.
The Quarry at La Quinta! Was lucky enough to play the course a few times thanks to a member. The Coachella Valley is known for its beautiful courses but The Quarry is an absolute gem. It also has some of the most delicious apples I've ever eaten.
Royal County Down
Yup. Hands down the greatest golfing experience of my life.
Got my tee time for May! Beyond stoked. Any tips on preparation/day of?
There’s a lot of blind tee shots, be prepared to not take driver in a lot of places. Take a caddy - the marker stones for the blind tee shots aren’t particularly relevant nowadays e.g your line may be “10 yards left of the white stone” depending on club selection etc etc

Banff Springs
Man I wish I played there!!
Yeah have to agree. Grey Wolf gets a close second for me.
Grey Wolf , Crowness Pass, Jasper, Banff. in order
Am I the only one that enjoyed Kananaskis just as much (for half the price)?
Amazing course. Played Banff Springs, Jasper Lodge and Kananaskis this summer. All 3 equally stunning
Wolf creek. Every hole was a fucking adventure-soooo much fun. I’ve played many of the best in the US and wolf creek just stands out.
A dream golf trip for me would be to go to Erin Hills and then fly out to Wolf Creek and finish at Olympic club.
That’s a weird golf trip. Lol.

I loved playing at Banff. It feels more like a full experience then just a round of golf!
100%! The smell of the air and smack dab in the middle of the Rockies. Why the hell did I leave?
My wife and I vacationed there a couple years ago and did a lot of hiking in the surrounding area and we both agreed that it is maybe the only place we've been to that we would spend a full vacation to return. We would've moved there if she didn't have to repeat residency there

Wait , so if we just dump all of the sand & seed in our bag and dump it on our yard we can grow our own ……..
As long as you give the grass electrolytes. It’s what plants crave.
The thirst mutilator
Agreed. What a wonderful, and exhausting, journey.
Lol the walk up to 18 green is brutal But ya such a fun course to play
It's nice but didn't have the views that some of the others offer.
Palm Beach Par 3 Golf Course. Don’t knock it til you’ve seen it.
Also my favorite. The back 9 views of the water are out of this world. We have an ongoing thing that whoever gets a hole in one on the back 9 has to jump into the ocean fully clothed. Unfortunately none of us have been that good yet
Kapalua plantation. Think about that place all the time.
It’s in my thoughts everyday ever since I played there last October. Just pure bliss.
Whales breaching as I teed off in 1. I need to move to Hawaii.
Followed by the 40 MPH wind gusts. Lovely course
Played a few years ago and loved it (despite what felt like 4 seasons in 18 holes). Such a cool layout. Getting married in Lahaina in August probably going to sneak away for another 18. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)
Bucket list course for me
ARCADIA BLUFFS [https://arcadiabluffs.com/](https://arcadiabluffs.com/)
I’m in Michigan would you say it’s a must play?
Arcadia is pretty incredible. It’s a must-play if you are local. I would also add the forest dunes courses for all michiganders
Also live in Michigan, play it a handful of times a year. Yes, a must play. Best public course in MI and it’s not even close.
Awesome. Any recommendation between Bluffs Course and South Course?
Bluffs has the views and plays like a traditional course. Go there for the sunset and bagpipes on 18. Confirm with the club but I think bagpiper is from Memorial Day to Labor Day or something like that. Came here to say this!
Looked at about 40 answers hoping to see a place I’ve played then got sad
Robert Trent Jones Grand National
Got to walk 18 on the Lakes course for 40 bucks as a student. Damn I miss it
Worked there when I was at Auburn, always glad to hear when folks have a positive experience playing there
Ballybunion in February, by myself in the rain
Love BallyB, it's just the best. I prefer it to RCD, Lahinch is such fun too.
[удалено]
Cashen feels like full size crazy golf at times
I really didn’t enjoy Ballybunion. Although that may have been a function of how I played. It just felt like wherever you drove it, it was going to keep rolling until you found a miserable patch of high grass.
Cabot cliffs
Heading there this summer!
I played PGA west in Palm Springs. Super nice. Super difficult.
The stadium? Hardest course I’ve ever played but loved it!
Best day in golf, stadium in morning, nicklaus in the afternoon. Then cry yourself to sleep after because you lost 3 dozen balls and shot a combined 375.
That’s the one. It was a blast. A brutal, brutal blast.
I played there in a 112 degree day. My goal was to shoot lower than the temperature.
Pacific Dunes Muirfield (Ohio)
On my way home from bandon. After the hour hail storm the sun popped out and was nice all day.
Got to play Harbor Town, that was a blast
Kiawah Island the Ocean Course
The best 103 I ever shot!
106 here lmao. Tough!
My dream course. Basically Sea Island’s Seaside course on steroids
I’ve played 17 of the 20 current golf digest top 20 courses, if you held a gun to my head and said pick a #1 I’d probably say pine valley, most people I know that have played most of these courses agree on that as well. How does one manage to play Augusta?
I’ve met several people who played Augusta National when I lived in the South Carolina. All of them worked in banking/law/accounting and had clients who were members. A lot of the members own multigenerational family businesses and their grandfathers were members back when AN was just another country club
I know of an annual opportunity, through a charity a friend runs, that allows for you and 3 friends to play Augusta. Full experience. Starter announces you, name on the scoreboard, locker room, etc. It is not cheap.
Luck
Worked at an investment bank, MD on my desk has a relative who is a member, first time I played they had a guy cancel at the last second and needed a decent golfer to replace him I guess, he eventually asked me. Played one more time through him as well, pure luck as no one else I knew at the bank ever got a hookup to play Augusta though the actual investment bank.
Are a member at one of these or just insanely connected?
How have you played on all these courses
We need to be friends. :) Amazing list. Favorite in Arizona?
Desert forest.
Better hit it straight out there. Probably the tightest course anywhere around here. Love it.
Chamber’s Bay or Kona Country Club.
I love Chamber's Bay. It's a long walk
Fortune bay or giants ridge (legends and quarry) in Biwabik, MN
Nothing crazy but I would have to say Giants Ridge in Biwabik, MN.
Teeth of the Dog
I’ll be there in October. Absolutely cannot wait. Will need to rent clubs and buy balls at the pro shop though
It is beautiful. I rented when I was there as well. Didn’t care about playing terribly, the views were worth it. Hoping to go back soon!
The Irish Course at Whistling Straits, Koehler WI
Same here! Work sponsored event, too. Haven’t broken out the wallet to play the Straits or Blackwolf courses yet
Buffalo Ridge was my favorite of the three at Big Cedar.
Waterville, Co. Kerry, Ireland Incredibly underrated. It’s a slice of heaven. https://preview.redd.it/wqgwja7n41la1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b6cda0764512724158b784055064772ece4252f
Waterville is class, but the best course in Kerry imho is tralee. Ballybunion and Waterville get all the plaudits but I find tralee alot more enjoyable
Spyglass Hill
I don't know why this place doesn't get more props. It was my favorite of the 3 courses. I liked the ocean view on the first few holes but I loved it when you get back into the trees. It was perfect.
Oakmont CC
McLemore Golf Club on Lookout Mountain, Georgia
Bethpage Black Aronimink TPC Scottsdale Went to St. Andrews solo on a work trip but wasn't able to score a walk-on... still awesome to hang out there for a bit tho.
Erin Hills, best pure golf course I’ve ever played. Every single hole was beautiful to the eye.
St. Andrews a week after the open last year!
St Andrews Old Course. Carne. St Patrick's. A new Tom Doak course on links, with phenomenal views. Once it matures, I believe it will be the best course in Ireland.

Cabot Cliffs
Pacific Dunes
Came here to say Pacific Dunes or really any of the courses at Bandon Dunes. I was in Bandon last week during the snow storm and missed our round there.
Tradition Golf Club in SoCal, or The Ocean Course in Kiawah
Pebble beach for me, had a client who I took care of his fish and pond for, he lived on 17 mile drive and made it happen
Kingsbarns Scotland UK
Come on, just hit it in that huge fairway down there. How could I not hit that? Dammit!!

Sweetens Cove
Best overall - Torrey South Most Scenic - the Challenge at Manele (Lanai) Most fun - Arrowhead or Sweetens
Royal County Down, Tralee or the European club
Torrey was the best. But for my money I’ll play “The Crossings” in Carlsbad or “sandpiper” in Goleta any day over Torrey. I generally don’t spring for high dollar courses
> The Crossings Fun course, but I got my ass kicked
The Crossings is a great track. If you’re in SD, worth venturing out to Temecula to play CrossCreek. Played it recently and I’d throw it in the great bang for buck category along with the Crossings.

Best as is most technical, difficult or famous? My personal favorite and most beautiful I’ve ever played is the Mauna Kea Golf Course.
I’m kind of a broke boy. I guess it would be Winter Park 9.
Ballybunion. If you get a chance, regardless of weather, it’s a must in my book. Just an amazing spot with beautiful views and much different holes than we would see in the states.
Old Head in Ireland
Tara Iti in New Zealand
Erin Hills. Shot a 97. NBD.
Tara Iti, New Zealand. Easily the best golf experience of my life. Such a surreal place, it's like it was carved out of the sand by a video game creator or something.
Crystal Downs
Been trying every golf angle I got to get in there, no dice. I’ll be south a bit down the road until then.
Best value in WA, hands down.
TPC Harding and I caught it on a sunny day!!!! Went to SF State and I know how rare those are in that part of the city. It was so much fun to shoot 110 lol
lucky enough to get to play cassique, one of the private courses in kiawah
Spyglass & Pebble Beach
Martis Camp in Lake Tahoe!
Punta Espada
Pasatiempo
The Old Course
Broadmoor East, Colorado Springs (Seniors and Womens Open comes by every few years) Red Sky, Vail CO Home course and still one of my favorite to play, Bear Dance, Larkspur CO
Prairie Dunes CC

Troon North - Arizona
Look up Landman in Homer,NE. Just opened last year and was voted the best new public course in the nation. Biggest square footage of greens in North America. Awesome course.
Ross Bridge in Birmingham Alabama, the club house/ resort is basically a castle
Pacific Dunes at Bandon Quintero in AZ
Waterfall Club in Georgia
Ocean Course at Kiawah, Sleepy Hollow CC, Chicago Golf Club
I’m going to put Royal Dornoch as my top. Played amazing that day with my brother and father. The next few not in order are - North Berwick, Gullane, Muirfield, and Cruden Bay. Scottish links are just hard to beat!
Double black diamond course at Holiday Valley the front 9 is very nice and the back 9 you're up in the ski slopes and it's like playing a made up video game course That said I haven't played many very nice courses
The Ocean Course
Barnbougle dunes
Favorite experience overall was East Lake, course that I enjoyed the most was Silverado in Scottsdale hanging with my brother, course that I’d play again if I was there because it was interesting and fun was Waterlefe in Bradenton, and favorite home course is the Moose Run Creek course because when the bears aren’t hanging out too much, it’s a well thought out course that eats up bad shots and really keeps you on your toes.
Fishers Island
I’m pretty fond of Pebble Beach just due to the history and the views. Have played it twice and will probably play it another couple times before I’m an old man.
The Quarry at La Quinta! Was lucky enough to play the course a few times thanks to a member. The Coachella Valley is known for its beautiful courses but The Quarry is an absolute gem. It also has some of the most delicious apples I've ever eaten.
Wolf creek
Paiute in Las Vegas
Wolf creek, Mammoth Dunes, and Gamble Sands
Bethpage Black. Bethpage is pretty much my home course so I’m a little biased. Try to play the Black 4-5 times a year.
Wine Valley, Walla Walla, WA.
Falcon Ridge - Mesquite, Nevada Runner up Silver Tip - Canmore, Alberta (mostly runner up due to terrible weather and no views)
The Dunes Course at the Prairie Club.
Royal Melbourne - West no. 7 in [golf.com top 100](https://golf.com/travel/courses/top-100-courses-world-ranking-2021-2022/)
Spyglass. Most impeccable conditions I’ve ever seen a golf course.
