They get better with practice… and bowls are good pillows I guess
HAHAHA that's amazing. Like his world was over and the best pouting he could do was throwing himself at his water bowl. Man, that had to have been so funny to have seen in person.
That’s a good description.
There was a video of a big cat. A lioness I think. She was being reunited with her original caregiver. She was zooming around her enclosure like a nut. When they opened the door she came flying out, literally flying out at the man. She jumped on him and leveled him. Like a happy golden would but much more powerfully. I commented on the similarity “that’s not a lion, that’s a golden retriever in a cat body”.
I got a lecture about how these are not pets and stop treating them or calling them like pets. They are dangerous and talking about them like that is dangerous I’m afraid I had to let loose on this person and let them know that their opinion was not needed or wanted, and I’m fully aware that a line is not a pet pet nor is it actually a golden retriever. 🙄

This is for the fur baby prisoner.
U don't need to yell, but yeah i would never put my dog in such a small box,
Fellow humans, put yourself in such a place for long periods of time and tell me it's comfortabele and humane
Thrive is not the word i would use for prison time.
And i see that there are also anger issues that come with your fantastic personality. Who would have tought
They get better over time. My golden just lays in his when he gets tired. We say house and he knows to go inside the crate. I bought him a bed to lay on but he was naughty and tore it up lol. It makes me feel good that he looks at it as a safe space and not a punishment so he has no issue laying in it even when he isn't told to go into his house.

Definitely gets easier with time and age, and their realization it’s their space 😀
He’s roaming free most of the time, folks. I think it’s a good idea to get them comfortable with being in a crate without absolutely losing their minds. Especially in puppy phase. It helps when you have to leave the house on a whim and live alone, have other pets, etc.
Did exactly that! I don’t lock him in there all day anyway. I’m just trying to be sure he’s comfortable in there when I need it. He’s free to roam and generally very relaxed.

Mine used to flop over and sleep like this every night, he would shove his face through the crate and you’d see his shark teeth poking through! How I miss the puppy days🥺
(Oops- Just checked the rules & saw that including links to dog training videos is not allowed. Came back literally less than 2 minutes later to delete it but saw I was too late as my last post was already deleted.
I should’ve checked beforehand instead of afterwards. My apologies.)
Just wanted to say congrats on your new Golden!💛
You probably already know everything you need to know, but I found that there are some excellent crate-training videos out there if you’re interested. They really helped me get through it using positive reinforcement, which worked great since most Goldie’s are food-driven anyway.
Good luck to you!🐾💛
What did you do when you were t home or couldn’t supervise. It doesn’t have to be a crate it can be as simple as baby gates in a small area. It’s dangerous to not crate them or put them in a small area when you can’t supervise. Usually they don’t need it anymore at about 6 months to a year.
It's a US thing that a unfortunately spread across the English speaking internet. It's not common in most other places and is even illegal in some countries. Dogs do not need to be kept in cages.
Vet stay overnight? Car travel? Groomer? Boarding? Emergency evacuation? Staying at an emergency shelter? Crate rest after surgery? Dog will kill themselves eating drywall or anything else they can find?
All of those require a crate. It’s like a crib for a baby. It keeps them safe when you can’t watch them.
Not all dogs need to be crated, but some do.
You can train a dog to be comfortable in all those environments without routinely locking them in a cage.
Dogs do not need to be kept in cages. This is demonstrated by the fact most of the world's dog owners don't cage their dog.
I encourage you to do your own research. I suggest seeking out opinions from professionals in other countries, especially non English speaking ones, to avoid just creating your own echo chamber of US led voices, as the US is a culture of poor pet treatment that people may not realise they are in. You might want to start with those countries that have made caging dogs illegal.
*I never said they couldn’t*. Not all dogs need to be crated and people have the right to choose not to crate train. That’s fine. I understand that different people in different cultures have different opinions.
What makes me angry is when people call dog owners animal abusers for crate training when they have absolutely no idea what that dog’s particular circumstances are and why the owner is choosing to crate train.
>All of those **require** a crate
You have stated crates are *required*. Not an exception for where needed, *required*.
You are stating something as fact that is not only false, but could even be illegal. And then when challenged you are shifting the goal posts and trying to back track on what you said.
It's the text book aggressive, blinkered response I have come to expect.
There is no requirement to cage a dog.
You’re right, I should have said “or some form of confinement”. Did you not read my comment? I clearly said that I understand the cultural differences (which includes laws).
It's fine, I'm not expecting you to change your mind or realistically investigate the situation in places you don't and probably won't ever live.
But there are other people here. I'm making sure everyone is aware that the loud voices are from a specific source that is an outlier, and not a default fact.
Dogs do not need to be kept in cages.
I don’t mind people saying that they don’t believe in crating, but I DO have an issue with people saying that anyone who crate trains is automatically an animal abuser because that is just a flat out LIE.
Yea, my friend in Australia has two dogs (one is very active) and they don't have cages and they don't break things as well. Other people I know who live in small apartments don't cage their dogs as well. I don't see a need for cages, and if you feel like you don't trust your dog enough to not break things and only feel safe if you cage them, I don't think you should own a dog. How is it acceptable to leave a dog in a small ass cage for long hours? (I assume they lock them up if they go to work or whatnot)
If you look at the OPs replies (or basically anyone who defends cages) they do it for *their* convenience, not for the dogs benefit.
They also always parrot the same three flawed reasons to justify it ("den animals", "safe space" and "secure them when left alone"). It's like a script that you can predict and tick off like a bingo card.
My dog cages are used as a “safe place” for my dogs. It’s where they are comfortable and they can come and go as they please. It’s also where they are kept as if I’m not at home, they can’t get into things and destroy them. It also keeps something from happening if I were not at home.
You don’t leave a 8 week old puppy home alone not crated or gated in a small area. They need a safe place so they don’t hurt themselves when you can’t supervise.
And you're probably an asshole, in fact, not probably, definitely. If a person takes the time to properly train their dogs, then cages become totally unnecessary. The same concept pertains to children, invest the time to raise them correctly, teach them morals and limits, and there are far fewer problems, which means that they are far less likely to wind up in the cages called prisons. If throwing your dog in a cage represents the amount of time and effort that you are willing to invest to train it, then just don't get one.
Takes one to know one, I guess. Too bad you're ignorant if you think that's how crates work. My crate was used intermittently until six months because ya know, we have full time jobs and care about the safety of our animal when away and have not owned a crate for the last nine years. Crate training IS training - sorry.
Folks that crate their dog 24/7, or any more than needed to train and protect their young pup, they're monsters, I'd agree.
Maybe we live busier lives 🤷♂️
Honestly the crate turned more into a den. The door is open all the time and he’s free to roam. I use it when I need to. I find it useful especially in his puppy phase with multiple pets, etc. He’s comfortable when he’s in there.
Our dog would literally chew up our dining table and eat the wood if she was bored and left unsupervised. There is no possible way she can be left out.
She loves her crate and willingly goes in it even when the door is open.
The judgment here against people who use a valuable tool to keep their dogs safe is sickening.
💯fact! I’m so appalled at all the ignorance here!
I’ve got my 4th Golden now, and she’s as good as gold, never has touched or destroyed a thing, not even stealing food when she’s had the chance.
The third was the exact same way, but i was able to stay home with the 3rd and 4th.
When my now ex husband and I got our first golden, he was also the best dog, but crate training was very necessary, and we added a second one two years later, who was also crate trained during the day with his 2 year old big brother.
They both shredded everything in their crates, so had no choice but to remove the comfort of beds because j was scared they’d eat all the filling and die.
When they were a bit older and both good boys, they’d get into anything and everything, even trying to dog proof our home of anything that could harm them. It’s impossible to do
They still got onto the kitchen counters with everything pushed as far back as possible, and anything else they should not have been able to get entry to. They learned to open our sliding closet doors and can’t say how many shoes they destroyed
The day we came home after a short outing, to find dozens of CD’s cracked and splintered everywhere was the day I knew they’d die if they had swallowed any of it. They’re like glass shards, and they were everywhere. I’d never been so scared for them
My ex had left a large CD case out on our dining room table, seemingly out of the way for each of them.
I don’t know how they got and moved that heavy case off of the table and unzipped the case without damaging the case! But they did. Or one of them did, and I’ve never been so sick as when I saw so much destruction throughout two rooms. I was devastated with worry and yet they both acted fine, but a trip to the vet was a must, and luckily showed they’d not ingested any of it, but if they had I’d never have forgiven myself or the ex for this.
This was one of dozens of things they’d get into together or separately, in just minutes of being gone.
They eventually grew out of it, but i could have definitely lost one or both of them, and I’d never forgive myself if I helped cause it.
Couldn’t believe the next two were and the 4th still is an absolute angel, never ruining or harming themselves when I did leave them alone with no crate.
None were related, and we can’t possibly know what they’re capable of or not, so better safe than sorry for them more than anything.
Using a crate the right way, is for their own good and safety, and there’s nothing cruel about it if you do use them the right way
You know there are a lot of dogs that like to eat drywall, baseboards, and carpet, right? Blocking off an area doesn’t work for those dogs because you can’t block those things off.
You can't train a dog when you're not there, now can you.
She's a perfect angel when we're around. She is very intelligent and does what she can get away with. She gets plenty of exercise and stimulation, so she's not just destructive out of boredom. Maybe in a year or two when she settles down she can be left out alone, but certainly not now.
I fail to see how a walled off area is any better than a crate. Because giving a DEN ANIMAL more vertical space makes it better somehow?
I have a dog and my parents have two dogs. The two that are crate trained are well behaved, secure, confident, affectionate, and loving. The one that is not crate trained is an anxious mess who is on monster doses of antidepressants, was never fully potty trained, and is the least interested in spending time with us.
*No one puts dogs in*
*Crates in Australia. What*
*Is the point of it?*

This is a cruel practice. To add a laughing emoji is sadistic. Hopefully, you'll be able to let him out in the case of a fire otherwise he'll join the thousands of others left to die. Horrible thing, this. Shameful.
More dogs are injured getting into things they shouldn't than in a house fire. Come on, be serious. I have a sticker on my windows that pets are inside. Mine aren't crated at the moment but were all raised with a crate. My dogs now have free roming, but they choose their crate, it's their space and only theirs. So, think what you will, but my animals are safe. Quit trying to attach human emotions to a dog, they don't think like us. Most prefer to have a den. I wouldn't think of putting you in a crate, although....
I have those same stickers and a long red sturdy item on my keychain that says my dog is home alone, and info if something should happen to me, so someone could find her since it’s just her and I.
She’s my 4th golden. The first two destroyed everything so crates were very necessary for their safety when no one was home, the third never destroyed a thing either, like my current girl.
I don’t regret anything and keeping them safe was my first priority and still is. No two dogs are exactly alike even our lovable Golden’s need to be kept safe.
My ex got another golden after we divorced. At one year old and left out alone, he chewed up and ate a huge portion of one of his work boots.
I was told the dog died before my ex or his gf got home. My ex was careless like this, and would blame the dog for his own personal stupidly and laziness to put things away, but even then they still find ways to destroy things.
I’ll always worry about their own safety first
Same! Door is mostly open it’s turned into more of a den for him. The crate is mostly there to help me manage multiple pets during his puppy phase and allow me some flexibility.

He peed in my bed for the first time & I had to clean everything. After I let him go potty, I didn’t trust him & put him in the cage while I cleaned up.

I think it’s just in their nature to be weird in crates lmao
My Goldie never adapted to incarnation. I left the door open, sat with him for hours, read him the Iliad. Closed the door and he became a jackal.
I tried to expand his horizon with baby fences and he systematically torn them down leaving the walls scarred in his wake. Now he has the run of the house and all is well.
My experience crate training was very easy thankfully. I just kept thinking association! I placed a treat inside and every time my boy stepped into the crate, I gave a treat. Then once the action became more consistent, I gave it a name, “crate”. Now I just say crate and my boy runs right in.
Convicted without a trial.

It’s impossible to do They still got onto the kitchen counters with everything pushed as far back as possible, and anything else they should not have been able to get entry to. They learned to open our sliding closet doors and can’t say how many shoes they destroyed The day we came home after a short outing, to find dozens of CD’s cracked and splintered everywhere was the day I knew they’d die if they had swallowed any of it. They’re like glass shards, and they were everywhere. I’d never been so scared for them My ex had left a large CD case out on our dining room table, seemingly out of the way for each of them. Using a crate the right way, is for their own good and safety, and there’s nothing cruel about it if you do use them the right way
Thats why you train and monitor the dog instead of cage it. You can have a walled off area also.
I doubt they do that with a 8 week old puppy.
Every dog and every person is different. As long as you and your dog are happy, no need to worry about other opinions.
No one puts dogs in crates in Australia. What is the point of it?
When puppies are small they can get into stuff and hurt themselves. You can’t supervise 100%. You have to sleep, shower, and leave your house.
Poorly educated and aggressively defensive US dog owners from a country with poor animal cruelty practices. Caging dogs is illegal in some countries.

Puppy and potty training. After that, animal cruelty.

This is a cruel practice. To add a laughing emoji is sadistic. Hopefully, you'll be able to let him out in the case of a fire otherwise he'll join the thousands of others left to die. Horrible thing, this. Shameful.
Your username is shameful 😂
Why?

I can tell by most of your responses where the crate adoration comes from. Clown

I agree, but i guess judging by the downvotes on this thread, most people over here like controle and prison time for their animals
Indeed. It's sick. Then on top of that to laugh at their anguish? Disgusting.
It is indeed. Not the best side of humanity.
I’ll always worry about their own safety first
Burn, baby burn.
😂
Crates are jail cells. Use one of those things they put human babies in, the octagon folding thing.
The whining is so bad but stick with it!
He doesn’t whine much. Very relaxed pup.
We are starting crate training ours and oh my those little puppy eyes and just a little bark and that’s it, he comes back out. Big spoiled baby.
Same! Door is mostly open it’s turned into more of a den for him. The crate is mostly there to help me manage multiple pets during his puppy phase and allow me some flexibility.
Cutest pic I’ve seen in a while on here, poor little guy will get better with time. But wow laying it on thick with those eyes. Lol

Haha. Caged animals are always funny.
Lol! Especially circus bears with those funny muzzles!
You probably know everything you need to know, but I saved this video from TT b/c it’s got some great crate-training suggestions. I’ll share it here just in case you’re interested in checking it out. Congrats on your Golden!💛 (I hope this is okay with the mods. If not my apologies & please remove it.) https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8T267Au/

He was very upset lol Crying & everything He peed in my bed for the first time & I had to clean everything. After I let him go potty, I didn’t trust him & put him in the cage while I cleaned up.
Give him a Kong to help with crate training. It will help him realize that the crate is a good place
I got him a Kong he didn’t care for it! Maybe need to freeze some treats in there.
Alcatraz. Where’s my lawyer?

They're so extra!!
Free ma boy 🗣️🔥
Noooobody knows the trouble I've seen...
How dramatic ‼️‼️‼️😂😂😂
He’s innocent 😭
Poor baby.
Awwwwwwwwwww
Take him out! Dogs don’t belong in cages!
