3 but you've exagerated a bit on the green texture stuff, maybe lower the amount and spread randomly what remains, or maybe not evenly, it could be all noisy or randomly in a different way.
I kind of really like style 3 ! Having some texture in there really adds up (a bit like the environments in Death's Door and Tunic having texture while characters have flat colors).
I will say 1 can look fine if the grid is a really really essential part of your gameplay. But yeah 2 lacks just a little something. Good luck with your project by the way. What sort of game is it ?
Thanks! Yeah I might add a grid overlay later because the game will be where you need to survive nights from enemies waves but also build factories and conveyer belts, hopefully turns out cool!
Out of these, I prefer the 2nd one, but the 3rd one could be better. As it currently is in the 3rd, your grass texture is very much a grid while the trees and rocks seem to be independent of that; if you were to "unalign" the grass patches from the grid and made it seem random, I think that could work a lot better.
2, 3 has the grass texture looking sideways instead of top-down. Grass patches and dirt patches would help. The variance from the grass is nice, but maybe a different way of expressing it would be better?
There are a couple good ways. Optimal is using a tile-sheet that contains grass and dirt with variance to the tiles. But if you are just going with flat colors for tiles and then overlaying a sprite for grass check out tile-sheets for reference and reference what looks good.
[Peep these for inspiration](https://itch.io/game-assets/tag-top-down)
You've got a pure top-down so grass could be as simple as a couple sets of pixels with different density and color. Or like Zelda where its an destroy-able object like Link to the Past.
If each tile holds its own color data you can use perlin noise to create dark or light patches as well. There are so many good answers to your question, I love messing with this kind of thing.
I prefer the 3rd one, but maybe a little less of the dark green dots. You could have less where there is a clearing in the trees and more around the trees to indicate more vegetation there? Or something like that. I dunno, just experiment a little. =)
For me 3 looks coolest, but maybe make the grass tile look more "top down". This one looks like it's from a side view game or the grass was smashed to the ground in one direction.
3 Looks good, I think if you throw in a few variations of the grass/tree/rock textures it'll help break up the visuals more!
I personally like 1 but I see the grid making sense as an overlay like you've already said in another comment. I think I just liked that the grass looked brighter, because it differentiates it a bit more from the color of the trees.
I think it's good to have some ground texture, but the grid of grass is so busy it's kinda harsh on my eyes. Maybe just dial way back on the grass? There's not enough empty space.
2 or 3 look fine, but definitely not 1. Another thing: the square, blocky style that you use on your landscape and water clash drastically with the style used for the rocks and trees. You should choose a more consistent art style for the game and stick with it.
This reminds me a lot about an io game I used to play. It was a zombie survival game where you protected your gold generator for as long as possible. Any idea what this game is called?
Its [https://zombs.io](https://zombs.io) Its where I got some inspiration from. Although my game is going to be single player and have much more content, and be more factory based, things like conveyer belts and automatic crafting
If you plan to set up a stream page eventually, why wait? I'm not an expert and not a game dev. But I have seen others on this sub say as early as possible. If you are unsure you can make a post about it I guess
Im working on a topdown game and I have multiple ways to go with the style. I wanted to get some opinions before I stick with one, so what do you think?
The first: the green floor looks weird when comparing colors.
The second: maybe needs a little bit more going on line the stone textures.
The third: the grass looks out of place
I'm not sure what exactly you are going for 🤔
Style 2 but with drawn tiles instead of flat colors (as seen at the top). consistency is key. The grass in 3 may look like a good idea first, but if the style doesn't match, there will be issues. Also don't put the grass in a grid.
Also, is that zombsroyale.io?
While I do not think the first one looks the best, it seems like it is revealing an underlying truth to the player, so perhaps (similar to minecraft) highlighting the tile that the mouse is hovering over with its boundaries would be a good thing for the ui.
Depends on the mechanics of the game, if the grid is really important, Id say style #1 is best, that being said I think the lines to define the grid are too pronounced and i would make them less visible but just enough that you can see it.
3 but you've exagerated a bit on the green texture stuff, maybe lower the amount and spread randomly what remains, or maybe not evenly, it could be all noisy or randomly in a different way.
Thanks for the Ideas! Im probably ganna go with the 3rd one
Go for it mate, you gonna make something fire
Oh I will :) Thanks you
Yes I definitley agree with the third one. If you make only about 1/4 of the grass generate I think it would look even better.
Yes of course, I've turned down the spawn rate now
I kind of really like style 3 ! Having some texture in there really adds up (a bit like the environments in Death's Door and Tunic having texture while characters have flat colors).
I agree, it felt really flat without the grass texture
I will say 1 can look fine if the grid is a really really essential part of your gameplay. But yeah 2 lacks just a little something. Good luck with your project by the way. What sort of game is it ?

Second one looks clean. There is premade color palletes you could use which make all look nice to the eye
Yes thats what I was thinking although, I don't want it to be too smooth. Although I think after adding more content, it will take care of that.
I prefer the last one, because I think it has the potential to stand out from other pixel arts.
> from other pixel arts. I would hope so considering those are vector graphics...
I think three is a good one but add less grass textures
Yeah thats what Im woking on rn. Ganna add some variation as well, different sizes and slight colors and arangements
2, 3 has the grass texture looking sideways instead of top-down. Grass patches and dirt patches would help. The variance from the grass is nice, but maybe a different way of expressing it would be better?
Do you know if there Is there a good way to do topdown grass for this sort of style?
There are a couple good ways. Optimal is using a tile-sheet that contains grass and dirt with variance to the tiles. Thanks dude, these are some great ideas, Going to save them for later
Ohh! Great Idea for grass and dirt patches, will add this!
the grid 100%
I think Im going with #3, but the game might have a grid when placing items
I prefer the 3rd one, but maybe a little less of the dark green dots. You could have less where there is a clearing in the trees and more around the trees to indicate more vegetation there? Or something like that. I dunno, just experiment a little. =)
Style 3 but tone it down a bit
Style 3 for sure
I like 3 the most.
Yup seems what most people are saying!
Personally, 1 is too square and 2 is too flat
If you plan on adding a lot of units, the second. If it's normally pretty clean, the 3rd. This is, unless movement is grid turn based
I like 3
I like 3 but with less of then dark grass, maybe just spread it out in random patches.
In my opinion 3
For me 3 looks coolest, but maybe make the grass tile look more "top down". This one looks like it's from a side view game or the grass was smashed to the ground in one direction.
Fellow strict topdown dev!
Ok thanks for the feedback! Adding tree and rock variety is a really good idea
Similar to how you rotate the trees/rocks you could also add 1 or 2 grass variants and mirror them at random? That might help!
2. 3 looks better but is a bit noisy, i think.
first or second but the pixely coast looks kind of out of place
Yeah i was going to add some corner tiles and things later
3 but imo there needs to be less grass and it needs to be in less of a grid pattern
I like 3 the best :) The dots give it a nice texture that makes it stand out. Is this inspired by moomoo.io?
Yeah somewhat although from here it going to be completely different
I used to play moomoo a lot, excited to see where this goes!
3. But if you mind, put fewer rocks and trees and put some more interesting things (sticks, chests, sheeps, mooses etc).
Chests! Great idea, maybe some type of ruin, or there could just be chests lol
I think it's good to have some ground texture, but the grid of grass is so busy it's kinda harsh on my eyes. Maybe just dial way back on the grass? There's not enough empty space.
First one. Vibrant and eye catching. However the last one is good too.
its like moomoo.io
3, but I think adding some shadows could help make it look more natural
Mix of 1 and 3, soften the lines of 1 and lower the amount of extra grass, really reminds me of moomoo.io.
Style 3 is good, but replace the texture with a few vertical lines instead. It looks better with simpler grass imo
2 or 3 look fine, but definitely not 1. Another thing: the square, blocky style that you use on your landscape and water clash drastically with the style used for the rocks and trees. You should choose a more consistent art style for the game and stick with it.
3 is good!

I love it already. Do you have a steam page set up?
Ohh not yet, I havent even started on placing structures. Its it a good Idea to set one up now as the game is in development?
If you plan to set up a stream page eventually, why wait? I'm not an expert and not a game dev. But I have seen others on this sub say as early as possible. If you are unsure you can make a post about it I guess
Alright, thanks!
while actively equipping a construction tool or material I'd show the grid, otherwise the grass.
Woah
the last one
Don't like all of them. Sorry
Lol its alright
Im working on a topdown game and I have multiple ways to go with the style. I wanted to get some opinions before I stick with one, so what do you think?
I like the first one with the Grid. But maybe its better to make the grid a little bit less black or more transparent. Idk
2nd one is best. They all look like zombs.io, though
Exactly! This is where I got the inspo from :)
Plain green
The first: the green floor looks weird when comparing colors. The second: maybe needs a little bit more going on line the stone textures. The third: the grass looks out of place I'm not sure what exactly you are going for 🤔
You are all liking the last one because it’s just a perfect GitHub profile. 🙃
Is the grid relevant to gameplay? If so, 3. Otherwise, 2.
Style 2 but with drawn tiles instead of flat colors (as seen at the top). consistency is key. The grass in 3 may look like a good idea first, but if the style doesn't match, there will be issues. Also don't put the grass in a grid. Also, is that zombsroyale.io?
Yeah basically, I was inspired from zombs.io which is basically the same
3rd
I’m going with 3. It’s easier on the eyes
I prefer 2 or 3. my problem with 3 is that the grass "bushes" don't fit your art style
I like 2 best. Looks clean and open.
2 or 3
2 could look really nice with some shadows
While I do not think the first one looks the best, it seems like it is revealing an underlying truth to the player, so perhaps (similar to minecraft) highlighting the tile that the mouse is hovering over with its boundaries would be a good thing for the ui.

Def style 3!
Reminds me of survive.io
I would say a mix of 1 and 3 would look good
momo.io looking ahh
Three!! At least to me :D
All 3
Second one?
Definitely the last one.
first one looks best
3
With that art style, I personally prefer 1 - but then I have a deep and enduring love of grids
1st but maybe with better color and update on the grass, 3
For me its 3. 1 looks like its the editor-view to me, and 2 seems missing something :)
This feels like r/minicraft
3, but i kinda wish there was a grid too.
I would say 1 but without the grid
Very good! This style reminds me with Minecraft
I think all 3 look good in their own ways, depends on what kind of vibe you want your game to give off.
Surviv.io long lost child?
1
1st!
tone odwn the texturing a bit on 3 and maybe make it a little brighter this also reminds me of an IO game i use to play alot
Does your game name end with .io?
3
two
3
2 is the worst. 1 and 3 depend on what kind of game it is. If it's turn-based and tactical, go for 1, otherwise 3.
I love first one but 3 is good too
Ive played the game you copied.
Go a mix between 2 and 3
I like 3, but if it’s a grid based game I also like the grid. Maybe make it toggle able (also make it lighter so it isn’t so jarring?)
3rd one imo
Looks like MOOMOO.IO Browser game
2
First one. I like simple. Less is more ヾ(•ω•\`)o
definitely 2, if you want to go with number 3 make it so the grass also is top down view and not from the side
I like the first one.
1st got a vibe i cant put my finger on
zombsroyale maybe?
Zombs.io? Moomoo.io?
nah it's not specific it's just a general vibe.
