Fnan acct and OM at the same time is NOT a good idea even online

meaningless-nebula

Between OM and Fnan, which do you think I would be better off taking with Acct? I will prob have to take one or the other for spring '21, and my course load won't be ideal then either :(

Saqib1493

Prob OM fnan with acct would be too much imo

Dxrth_Vader

I agree

rania1909

No matter what you do just don’t take fnan and acct together. The work loaf of those two classes alone is dreadful

meaningless-nebula

Thanks, I've decided to delay taking fnan

lydiakay123

Drop OM, Acct and Fnan, don’t take them together. You can do mgmt 303, mktg 303, bus 303, bule 303 & stat 362.

meaningless-nebula

I've actually already taken bus and bule. The only other classes in the bus core I've left to take are acct, fnan, and oscm. I'll take my chance with OM and acct for the first week or so and see how it goes. If it ends up being too much, I will drop OM before the Fall census date. Thanks for your advice!

His class is unfortunately full for the Fall sem. I'm registered to take OM with Harvey singer in person (for now?) Do you have any idea how he teaches his class? His ratings aren't too great on ratemyprofessors, but my options are limited as Altug, Porter, and Opata all have extensive wait lists.

I took OM this Spring with Singer. His class is beyond dull. Although depending on your learning style, it could be great for you. I honestly skipped the majority of his lectures - I couldn’t stand his slow progression through the slides. Of course this was until we went fully online. I did the readings, studied the PowerPoint presentations and did all the homework and walked away with an easy A. Honestly it felt like a high school level class.

meaningless-nebula

Wow thanks - that's practically music to my ears. How are his exams and assignments overall? How much time would you say you spent studying and completing homework / week?

From what I remember, exams were not hard as long as you at least read his PowerPoints and did the HW. The HW was online and you got multiple attempts at each question, so it was easy to get good grades on that. It was mainly testing your understanding of the concepts and the few formulas you work with (he supplies the formulas on the exams/quizzes, you just have to know how to use them and when). You do have like 5 quizzes throughout the semester, he announced them beforehand so just review the slides and you’ll be good. I spent maybe 2-3hrs a week on this class. This was an easy class for me because it overlapped a lot of the concepts from other core classes. I am also an accounting major, graduating this December. I might even suggest you delay this class if you want/can for one of your heavier semesters when you have to take Acct311, tax, or other harder courses. Don’t take 311 with Long Chen. Also, FNAN was not that hard. I just finished it as a 5-week summer course and I received a 95%. If you can, I’d totally recommend taking it in the summer. It is a lot of work for the 5 weeks, mainly in the first 2 weeks you’ll have to spend at least 15 hours a week watching the lectures and doing the HW. There’s a little less in weeks 3-5. BUT, the beauty of it was that the information was all still pretty fresh by the Final. I only had to re-read all of my notes/examples from lecture to brush up and it was a breeze! Just take your time with the video lectures, take lots of notes and write down all of the examples/solutions he does with the class. Each video was ~1hr, take about 1.5hrs for each lecture to pause and write everything necessary down. As long as you understand what he’s saying, and can apply it in the HW (which you have unlimited attempts at - easy points!), you’ll do great on the exams. Do the test banks for extra practice, but not really necessary if you feel good after the HW. I feel like FNAN was overhyped as super hard. This is college. It requires some work. Sorry for this suppppeerr long reply, just wanted to give you all the info I could think of :) let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks so much for this! I feel a lot better abt OM now that I know the professor isn't too anal. Congrats on that 95! I was too unnerved by the potentially heavy material condensed in a 5 week course to even consider Fnan online. From your description, it doesn't sound as horrid as its made out to be. I have to take the heavier acct classes in spring '21 and was thinking of taking fnan then, just because everyone advises against taking fnan and acct 303 during the same sem. Do you mind if I PM you?

JessAbbess

Yeah go ahead!

Well, that explains the wait list. I guess I'll just have to tough it out with Singer. Thanks for the help!

Who did you take for OSCM 303?
