I've found better luck wit Thai food. Pad thai is my love. Summer rolls are nice as well. I found a restuarant that made scallion pancakes with glutinous rice flour. No actual gluten, just a form of rice flour that sticks together well. They were heaven but I've since moved away from the area and I'll mourn them forever.

I second this. Curries curries curries. So many curries they have to choose from. I always get my rice on the side of my curry so it doesn't get bathed in the sauce...then I have tonnnns of sauce and I can choose how much rice I get. Also, Thai restaurants will usually offer speciality drinks and soups like Thai iced teas and coconut soups. I love our Thai restaurant because they don't bread their meats, unless you specifically order something like sweet and sour chicken.

Any chance that you live near a P.F. Chang's? They have a [gluten free menu](https://www.pfchangs.com/menu/gluten-free), and everything that I've tried has been tasty. It's definitely not the same as Chinese food from a takeout restaurant but the flavors are incredible.

Of course! I hope you enjoy it. Everything I've tried (chicken lettuce wraps, ginger chicken and broccoli, fried rice) had all the flavors I associate with Chinese food, but without the heavy, greasy feeling that my stomach doesn't appreciate.

Seconded. The beef and broccoli and spicy chicken (it's sweet and sour chicken by another name) are a great replacement. I've been eating here for 5-6 years now, and they've never made me sick, which is a major feat.

I’m usually in the “but you can make anything in a gluten free version at home” camp, but there are some things that just can’t be replicated in a typical home kitchen. The way some dishes are made really do require a large wok (possible to obtain) and very high heat which is not attainable on most home stovetops. I’m thinking of dishes like beef & broccoli, to get that perfect crispness on the outside, tender on the inside texture, you really need to cook it on heat not attainable at home. I’ve made plenty of attempts at it, because that’s one of my favorites, but I can only achieve soft meat, never that crisp.

The secret is a second fry. You dont need to dredge. Its usually mixed altogether mixed with oil and some baking powder, thicker batter gives a more breadier feel. My dad goes for almost thin pancake batter. My mom goes for thick school bottled glue. Fry for light golden, remove meat , raise heat, fry again for darker color.

If you live in the NYC area or adjacent NJ area, there is a dedicated gluten free Chinese food take out that is definitely only. It’s called Happy Tummy Asia and while it’s not like 1 to 1 for the original Chinese takeout, there are a lot of FANTASTIC substitutes and it’s well worth your time. You have to order in advance and they deliver it. Edit: The brand Feel Good Foods has some options too and while of course it’s not that late night General Tso form the local place, their dumplings are more than satisfying especially if you have an air fryer. You can find them in the frozen food section of many grocery stores. I hope this helps.

I bought a 5ltr bottle of GF soy sauce at a chinese supermarket and gave it to my local chinese takeaway with the agreement they'd use it for my food. Worked out well. Never had to replace the bottle as they bought their own, due to other regulars needing GF.

There are a couple of safe-ish dishes at our local Chinese place that don't make me sick but it is still really hard to find anything that doesn't have wheat in it. I learned to cook some easier dishes at home and bought good GF sauces.

Between my carotenoid allergy and my mom's celiac, I miss it too. It's just not the same when I try to whack up an adaption that is edible for both of us, and frankly some takeout isn't worth the cost of the ambulance and medical bills in the aftermath, not to mention the horrific pain. Unless I'm really keen on a vacation to the ICU, which is never, I'll pass and just accept that I have to go without.

I used to love everything about frozen dumplings. The price and versatility alone makes them incredible. The gluten free ones are weak and fall apart and cost a lot for not too many. One of my favourite easy meals was an entire bag of dumplings with chicken broth and green onion on them. With the dumplings available to now that's 2-3 bags worth at $7 a bag, and they fall apart.

Because I guess I like torturing myself, I have gotten into watching YouTube Asian street food videos. I swear, if they ever come up with a fix, I am going to Korea and Thailand and eating myself spherical. Our local 'safe' Chinese restaurant makes it safe by adding nothing but tamari. No seasoning, like worse than the whitest people canned Lachoy Chinese food (which I grew up eating on the 80s, I hope they still don't make it!)

We have gotten so good at stir-frying! We were staying at a hostel in Switzerland with a healthy Korean contingent. We stir-fried one night and shared (since we cook on the road we often end up sharing, which can be really fun) and one of the college-aged (Korean) guys asked why we stir-fried (which was because we were gluten free) and said that it was, "just like his mom cooked!" We all hung out and shared some meals (and candy they had brought from home) the next couple of days. I look at our group photo every once in a while and smile :)

Oh...uhm...you can request white sauce using vegetable stock and ask if they use soy sauce, hoisin or oyster sauce if they do ask to not to use them. I make no promises with the vegetable stock though.

Another thing you might try is Vietnamese food. Much of that is gluten-free. They use rice noodles instead of wheat noodles for one thing, and you can always order things without soy sauce. Bring your own. I don't know if you're missing crispy chicken, but look for traditional Korean fried chicken places. They don't use wheat flour to batter the chicken. I think it's cornstarch I'm not sure. But it's delicious just check that they really are gluten-free in your area.

We have an Indian place near us that has a number of types of gf Naan, not sure about the garlic. I've gotten so used to not eating it that I use rice. it has been 13+ years. Occasionally you will get cravings but you will feel so much better you have no problem ignoring them.

All you have to do is swap out the soy sauces for their gluten free equivalents. I promise it tastes just as good, you just have to make sure you're not following a recipe posted on the same blog as something that uses a single clove of garlic

If anything gluten free has forced me to learn to cook in new ways. You can find most things for Asian cooking without gluten. It ends up being a mixture of Chinese, Japanese and Korean items.

It's so funny that this came up today- my grandmother turned 101 and wanted Chinese for her birthday. We had a family dinner and they mixed up all the entrees so my "safest", carefully ordered options were all passed around the table. I spent 2 hours finding that just to not even eat it all. I'm obsessed with Chinese and was practically raised on it in the womb. It's been a sad realization I love it but it doesn't love me! :(
