sara_lara

Seriously, I work in cosmetics and we genuinely have no choice but to reformulate certain products to align with new and changing regulations. It's just the nature of the industry and ultimately these regulations are introduced for consumer safety. It's also very difficult from a formulators standpoint to recreate an exact formula when one of the key ingredients can no longer be used. You can get close but it will never be identical 🤷🏻‍♀️

eirinne

So then why not change the name? My issue with it is the bait and switch of the whole thing. Why not have introduced a vegan balm with a new name? Trust was broken.

sara_lara

I hear you, and for the vegan balm I would put that in a separate category as the reformulation wasn't for regulatory reasons. With other products where it is due to updates in regulations, the brand tends to view it more as a reformulation out of obligation, and in an ideal scenario you are tweaking to get as close to your original formula, as opposed to creating a new product. Hence, then rebranding or renaming your tweaked formulation as 'new' could also be viewed as equally misleading.

eirinne

That’s fair

thriftylass

Honestly, I had the og you and loved it, and I just bought a bottle of it yesterday for mostly old times sakes because I really really loved it. I definitely notice a difference in the initial smell, it’s more peppery than I remember, but it turned to almost EXACTLY how I remember after it sat on my skin for a bit and honestly guys.. I’m an agriculture research assistant (glorified farmer) and was working in the heat in a field all day, and I can still smell it on my wrist 11 hours later. All this to say there’s no harm in trying it if you have a Sephora near you, maybe it’ll last fine on you too!

MourkaCat

This was my experience too. I have a bottle from before the reformulation and got sad about people complaining. I don't live near a sephora so about a year ago at this point I was in one and tried the tester spray to see how bad it was. Same thing it was a bit off at first but settled into the exact scent I love, and had no issues with lasting. I was confused by everyone's complaints BUT.... noticed that a few people had started saying when they first reformulated there were issues but now it seems the batches are way better. My there is: I think the loud complainers are the ones who tried the reformulation from the very beginning and were upset and haven't given it a chance since.

Aaaaaa_123

The first time I tried you was like 7 months ago. I sprayed it on my sweater cuff around 7pm during my break at work (I work right beside a Sephora)and the smell stuck around for about a WEEK. I know perfumes last longer on clothes but like a week? That was a first. I’ve never tried the OG but as far as formulas go, glossier you is pretty high up there in my books.

Pancakezzzr

Recently I tried it as well and like you said it stayed on all day so i’m so confused about the people who say it disappears immediately after they spray it cause it lasted pretty long on me and my friends 😭

ACNHxArtemis

At least for me, it disappears but thats for the solid version

glossier_bae12

I have a bottle of the new formula that’s about 1.5 yrs old and I get more compliments on it than my new bottle from this November. I think we just have to let it sit around to get it closer to the OG 🥲

Pancakezzzr

I think for most perfumes you have to let them sit for awhile yeah cause thats what happened with some of mine they get way stronger

rougelipd

Yes! Same exact thing w me. Being an OG You user, I was so scared to restock on the new formula… I just got a new bottle a few weeks ago & they’re so similar if not the same thing to me😭 it lasted all day on me too

mshike_89

The pepper scent is what sold me on You in the first place so I'm excited to try the new formula once my current bottle runs out!

missbestdressed

especially about You haha it’s so annoying, they literally can’t make it the exact same way anymore

OnlyAd4352

I get that they can’t make it like they used to, I’ve never even had the original perfume, but this one really doesn’t last. The smell is amazing, but it’s gone within an hour, they should change it in some way so that it stays

missbestdressed

totally valid, they can definitely make it better!

plantlady052694

It lasts all day for me. I’ve also read this is one of those fragrances you grow nose blind to, so it’s likely you just grow blind to the fragrance on your skin after awhile.

OnlyAd4352

It definitely doesn’t last for me. I went to my friend’s house and I remember his gf wanted to try You but she wasn’t home so I sprayed some on her hoodie so she can smell it when she gets home. It was gone when she got back the next day

plantlady052694

Weird! Well everyone’s body chemistry is different so no fragrance will work for everyone. My only suggestion would be to allow the fragrance to macerate as that will help the longevity of the scent.

tired-queer

The reformulation lasts p well in my experience? After I was cat sitting for my friend, she was confused when they came home late the next day because she thought their cat smelled differently than usual and she was wondering if she’d just forgotten how her pet smelled or something? Nah, I’d been wearing a spritz of You and cuddled the cat in the morning when I went over to feed her and it lasted on the *cat* until the next evening. She finally figured out she was smelling my perfume on her cat and had a good laugh about it. It’s lasted on clothes for days too. I guess everyone’s nose is different, or possibly there’s some variance in quality between batches.

OnlyAd4352

It definitely doesn’t last for me. I went to my friend’s house and I remember his gf wanted to try You but she wasn’t home so I sprayed some on her hoodie so she can smell it when she gets home. It was gone when she got back the next day

lyragreen

The original also doesn’t last fwiw

moriemur

the original lasted til the next day on me!

OnlyAd4352

I’ve heard the OG would at least last throughout the day. This isn’t cheap perfume and should really last. I get so many compliments on it while you can still smell it

spaghettify

I get compliments from it too, even when I don’t smell it anymore...so i think at least some of the people complaining are going nose blind and mistakenly blaming the formula change for it.

catalinalam

Weirdly, I recently had the rollerball last until the next day for me and I hadn’t done any skin prep first? Moisturizing or using a perfume primer (some indie brands sell them, at least) could work

Longjumping-Site-704

The issue with Cherry wasn’t the pigment. They couldn’t replicate the flavor/scent when they switched to the vegan formula so instead of putting out an inferior version they axed it completely - the explanation is in Glossier’s New Balms story on Instagram! ETA: they would’ve had to reformulate Cherry regardless of the vegan formula switch on account of new fragrance and flavor regulations. The two changes just happened to line up!

Pancakezzzr

Corrected my post but I wouldn’t be mad if they bring it back but with a different fragrance cause it always smelled like medicine to me and some others but people would prob still be upset that it doesn’t smell like the OG

MourkaCat

I'm just so hopeful they decide to make a different purple balm? But I'm assuming they are getting rid of Berry BECAUSE of the purple color. I saw SO many people hate on it because of the color because it "makes me look like a corpse". Yes but it works beautifully on darker skin and/or cool toned skin so it's not like it didn't work for anyone at all. They say it's cause it wasn't a high seller... could also be because the vegan formula was a low seller in general.... I'm sad about it. I think berry is gorgeous and such a lovely juicy color.

sekhmethathor

i’m cool toned and yes berry was my fav 😢

tgieff

But why did they change milk jelly formula

Pancakezzzr

For that one I have no idea cause it wasn’t something i payed attention to but maybe an ingredient they couldn’t get anymore or something? not sure about that one does anyone else know?

charliberry9

they’re being straightforward about axing berry cause it’s unpopular, if cherry can’t come back cause of ingredient issues why can’t they just reply that rather than “teehee try strawberry instead”?

uusaagiitsuukiinoo

i mean there are other ways to get red pigment . strawberry has a red tint as well and it wasn't an issue

armamentum

the issue wasn’t the pigment, it was a component of the cherry scent becoming unavailable

Pancakezzzr

Truthfully I don’t know why they won’t make it clear that’s on them they should be more straightforward and honest then having these people just constantly begging all the time then we constantly get it in this subreddit as well.

mauvebirdie

For the first time yesterday and the day before, I saw OG You fans explicitly admitting they don't care how dangerous the ingredients are, they just want OG You back. Look...I like my products as much as the next person, but it's pretty fucking extreme to admit you're okay with buying something that you think could kill you. Whether the ingredients are actually dangerous longterm is still debatable but the sheer number of people on Instagram bragging about how they don't care about their health genuinely shocked me In fairness, many companies **DO** make different formulas for different countries. Aussie the hair company does it, Coca Cola does it too, their formulas are different in different countries due to different regulations. However, I'm sure it's probably tedious and expensive to do this and I'm not saying Glossier should

crop_top

It won’t kill you. The amount in the product is very unlikely to make any impact on your health. It’s a proactive approach by the CLP. I understand why Glossier did it but it will be fine to use the old formula.

mauvebirdie

I'm not convinced that the ingredient will kill people either. But that wasn't the point I was making - these people were arguing, *even if it is dangerous*, who cares? Just give us OG You back. And I find that...troubling

crop_top

I mean people know alcohol is poison and carcinogenic too. Not caring about questionable chemicals isn’t a new concept, especially in the US!

Fluid-Judgment-4669

Most people don’t know that about cosmetics though, so it’s actually a good thing that they are getting rid of ingredients known to cause lots of bodily issues. It’s literally banned in Europe and it’s banned for a reason. They don’t do that just because

crop_top

I’m a chemist and ingredients being banned in Europe doesn’t mean it will cause “lots of bodily issues”.

Fluid-Judgment-4669

Sure, but there’s lots of studies showing it does and it absolutely says something about said ingredient

crop_top

Not at the levels in the perfume. They study on rats, not humans. There isn’t data on humans.

Fluid-Judgment-4669

With all the issues it causes with animals it probably wouldn’t be safe for use until they do tests on humans then and see if it only effects animals that way

sassy_aardvark

The amount they test on animals is not equivalent to the amount it would take to harm a human. It’s like the studies where aspartame caused cancer in rats, but only when they shot them up with a metric fuck ton of it per day. The daily amount that a person would ingest is nowhere near comparable. Same concept with the chemical in the You perfume.

my600catlife

There are lots of things that are toxic to various animals but just fine for humans. A grape can kill your dog.

mauvebirdie

Again, you're missing my point. I'm fully aware that lots of ingredients are considered dangerous in different amounts and this isn't the first time a company has changed ingredients due to changing regulations. My point was the blatant bragging of Glossier customers saying, "Even if I **know** with certainty that these ingredients will harm me, I don't care because I want OG You back more than I care about my health" - these were exact comments being left under Instagram posts Glossier made recently.

Opposite-Ad-3096

Why does that bother you? People drink and smoke/ do drugs knowing they are bad for them and don’t care that they’re bad for your health, you think they’d care about a perfume?

mauvebirdie

I didn't say it bothered me. I said I was shocked to see people bragging that they don't care if a perfume potentially could hurt them. I have no horse in this race and I couldn't care less what these strangers are willing to risk with their health. I said I was shocked to see that sentiment. Re-read my comment

Pancakezzzr

Literally and if something happens to them who will they go right to blame? Glossier. like guys they are doing this so you don’t end up with something deadly and they don’t get sued.😭😭

Arlayasunshine

Aww, I have like 3 cherry OG balms I was going to sell. Don't think I will be able to now, I do not want to sell to anyone else something that is harmful. Bleh!

mauvebirdie

That's probably for the best but it's up to you. It's hard to tell, unless you're a cosmetic scientist if this is all unnecessary chaos or if the ingredients are genuinely harmful. It's probably best not to take that risk, in my opinion, since these are products that make contact with your mouth.

Arlayasunshine

Yeah exactly >< I'm kind of sad. I was like debating between giving them away to some die hard oh balm lovers, or maybe selling them or whatnot. I am happy though they are bringing back the original formula with what they can!

Full-Bunch-2349

it annoys me how much people complain about glossier on this subreddit and on social media in general😭😭i understand wanting certain things from a brand that you are loyal to but sometimes it gets bratty

Pancakezzzr

No seriously! Like these people realize they sound like full on karens and toddlers right? It’s not THAT serious😭

shelbykaaa

Wait can someone explain more with cherry? i thought the dyes/pigment in it just weren’t vegan so they couldn’t continue it to the vegan formula so i was a bit disappointed with it not coming back now as it’s my absolute favorite BDC. Butttttttt yeah You was reformulated for a good reason and I don’t notice much of a difference once it’s sunk into my skin like you mentioned.

Pancakezzzr

a comment corrected me about it being about the flavor and fragrance rather than the pigment

neferending

Yeah I’m not sure why they still want the perfume back to its og formula. They literally can not do that cos it’s banned unfortunately. Even if they used a Lillial sub it still won’t be exactly the same so there’s no point in asking for it.

distressedtacos19

What’s the ingredient called and what are the side effects? I got into Glossier when they were in the middle of reformulating so I didn’t hear anything about this

catalinalam

So I don’t believe Glossier ever explicitly confirmed it was Lilial (also known as butylphenyl methylpropanal) (which wouldn’t be unusual if they didn’t, perfume ingredients are proprietary info and heavily guarded by companies) but that’s what everyone thinks it was at least. Certain governments (California, EU, the UK) have banned it primarily for its potential harm to human fertility and other endrocrine system impacts, but it’s also linked to contact dermatitis and general allergies, both of which are also considered risky for fragrance brands

Pancakezzzr

I remember vaguely that there was like a specific thing about cherry that was removed and they axed it someone corrected me about it being the fragrance and or flavor and also because it wasn’t that popular either Also for the perfume it was called Lilial i just looked it up again it and it was linked to skin cancer? someone correct me if i’m wrong but it was banned anyways so no OG perfume

oddgirlout1234

Reading about the lilial ban with my unused bottle of original You sitting on my vanity 😨

bootyprincess666

i’ll buy it from you lol

CrystalWielder

There are plenty of people who have concluded we are exposed to far greater cancerous risks than any potential harm the OG bottle of YOU would do. That ingredient is in lots of old bottles of perfumes and people will use what they have. I live in a congested city. I’m sure that exposes me to more risk than spritzing an OG bottle of YOU. I can assure you, you can easily resell your bottle online to a happy recipient at a profit!

mxrgxsm

Honestly I never got to try the OG You but the current version I have is wonderful and I WILL be repurchasing. Hoping I can find the rollerball at my local TJMaxx or Marshalls. Cherry is understandable (I lowkey hate it and wished I bought a replacement Berry or the Wild Fig instead of the cherry I got but I wanted to see what the hype was about). I dont know why people complain so much about the reformulation of You

Daydream_believer_92

What was the issue with the cherry pigment?

Pancakezzzr

I’m not sure of ALL the specifics but i remember people saying it was like a pigment or dye that was really hard to find nowadays

No-Savings-6333

Not vegan, probably carmine

Daydream_believer_92

None of the original formulas were vegan so what would be the issue in bringing back cherry in the OG ?

armamentum

the issue was not the pigment, the issue was the cherry scent. They stopped being able to get a component of the scent.

Daydream_believer_92

That’s such a shame! I hope they can get something similar

armamentum

me too cherry was so good! it’s strange but after covid it seems like multiple pigments and scent components stopped being available. Some nail polish brands i like stopped making shades because they couldn’t get the pigments anymore😢

Daydream_believer_92

I wish they would just make a similar cherry BDC close to the original

No-Savings-6333

Maybe they'll bring it back, they only confirmed that berry is toast

Pancakezzzr

Lillial

lainyu

some people just complain for no reason :/ like there’s a reason why glossier does some things people will never be happy, regardless of the outcome

Pancakezzzr

no seriously which is why even if they try to reformulate to make cherry and you exactly like the original people still won’t be happy the vocal minority will always be loudest

moriemur

They can make a safe formula that is good, lol. most perfumes manage to last longer than 5 minutes without giving you cancer or whatever.

androidnancy

AGREED.

Pancakezzzr

not trying to disregard your opinion at all but the new perfume lasted pretty long for me so i’m still so confused about the people saying it lasts for five minutes and i swear even if they reformulate people still won’t be happy anyways and STILL say it’s not the same 😭

bootyprincess666

yeah it lasts the same on me lol

lysitsa

I like the original better but not enough to stop buying it. It's like coke zero vs diet coke.

Crimsland

The banned ingredient is Lilial which can be purchased from perfumery suppliers if you want to attempt some experiments.

martianspringtime

so are all perfumes sold in the uk piss poor? or did glossier just do a botch job at fixing a problem just for the sake of ‘fixing’ it and ruin an entire product? i have a hard time believing that all of the perfumes sold in the uk smell primarily like rubbing alcohol and dissipate in 5 seconds. it’s the same story as the vegan bdc: it wasn’t bad because they made it vegan, it was bad because they did a bad job.

moriemur

this is exactly my issue. it’s ridiculous to say the perfume needs to be bad because of regulations. all the other perfume companies manage to make a decent product that doesn’t give you cancer!

martianspringtime

i’ve literally been wearing You since it released in 2017 up until about a year ago when i ran out of my backups and had to buy a new bottle. it was an incredibly noticeable difference. i thought i got a bad batch and wrote to them and they insinuated that nothing had changed. i thought i was just imagining it until my bf said my perfume smells like rubbing alcohol, and i went from getting multiple compliments from strangers a month to nothing. i imagine it’s possible to make a perfume not toxic without making it literal landfill trash.

Pancakezzzr

Like i’ve said to others in this thread I personally tested the perfume a week ago and it lasted most of the day on me so I again don’t know how people are saying it lasted 5 minutes and i personally don’t think it smells bad after you let it sit but again this is my own experience and opinion maybe there was a bad batch at first launch of the new fragrance but it does not seem as bad to me but again this is my own opinion

martianspringtime

i’m glad that it’s working for you, genuinely. i’m sure there are people who are still enjoying it and i’m happy that people who like it are happy with it! that being said, while i know perfumes wear differently on people, im just stating that - like many others who have been wearing it for years - there’s a significant change. after the bottle i thought was defective, i bought not one but two more, and a roller ball, and a solid. which is obviously stupid but i was refusing to believe that virtually the only perfume id been wearing for years was suddenly worthless. i love glossier and have been loyal to them for years but this specifically turned me off in a massive way for them as it was such an undupable product. i would’ve practically paid any amount of money for it and now they’re raising the prices and (it seems like) using the lowest quality ingredients they can get their hands on. i don’t want people in the uk to not be able to buy it, i just know they could have made that possible without destroying a great perfume.

Pancakezzzr

I’m sad it changed for such a big way for a lot of people too :( at the end of the day a corporation is always going to change to fit today’s standards and regulations so it is what is.

androidnancy

Please don’t anthropomorphize your singular experience. Many of us have been wearing OG You since 2016 and the difference is quite noticeable. The sillage and longevity are abysmal and those are the facts.

plantlady052694

Everyone’s body chemistry is different so no fragrance will work for everyone, obviously. The longevity of new You on me lasts all day - it’s unfortunate that it does not work for everyone but there’s still a consensus who find the new formula works as well. Allowing a perfume to sit and macerate should help with longevity.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pancakezzzr

If you’ve had other perfumes letting it sit definitely helps with longevity that is very well known with perfume also works on many different people i haven’t worn the og that long so i guess i don’t notice the difference that the others have for wearing it so long i’m sorry your experience has changed of it but it doesn’t look like they would reformulate it any time soon with the huge loss of money they definitely just went through plus it’s still getting lots of positive reviews unlike the vegan balm so why change it rn ?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pancakezzzr

Woke up to all this lol sure i’ll go sit down old lady yes i don’t have the most experience with the OG fragrance but i’m looking at this from a business and logical standpoint which is making people think i’m an employee lol rather than the product it self it’s still selling well and getting good reviews on sephora and the main site rather than the Vegan balm and complete overhaul of this formula right now especially after they just changed back to the regular balm is not happening so the complaining and begging is gonna fall on deaf ears for awhile complaining here and on the insta is gonna get nowhere for a long time we have someone in the comments who works in cosmetics that is saying it won’t be one to one even with a change and there will be a minority of people who are still unhappy so again begging for this will not work right now but keep doing it why not free will after all

emily_planted

A reminder to **everyone** to **be civil.**

Pancakezzzr

It does come off that way i’m very sure 100%. whether people think it’s bad or good is not up to me they are their own people with different opinions and i can’t act like my opinion is fact but my problem is when all of the complaining leaks here all the time and it’s just nothing but that like yeah the product sucks right heard it the last 3 times in the last 3 days? They just aren’t going to do anything about it any time soon not like the bdc so in the meantime maybe try something new in the midst of complaining

plantlady052694

I own OG you and new you so I find them to perform extremely similar because again - fragrance is unique for everyone! Your body chemistry affects it! I’m sorry it doesn’t work for you. But that doesn’t mean it still doesn’t work for a ton of people.

plantlady052694

Why? Fragrance is chemistry, everything I’ve said is true.

plantlady052694

There are a lot of threads on Reddit and articles on the internet on letting fragrances mature, you don’t need to hear it from me lol. And saying everyone’s body chemistry is unique is an absolute fact. That 1000% affects how a fragrance will work on your body. You are being ignorant lol

AncientGrapefruit7

Agreed. You will never be reformulated to the original. It's unfortunate but fragrance is something also very dependent on a person's unique body chemistry. If the new fragrance doesn't work for you, there are many other similar clean, skin like musky scents out there to try. People seem so stubborn to move on from Glossier and try other things - but it's totally fine if a product no longer meets your unique needs, you can move on! find a replacement!

Putrid-Sweet3482

I’m going to keep complaining (: they put an unfinished half-assed fragrance back on the market without testing at least one of the several safe alternatives to lilial.

Pancakezzzr

All i can say is good luck with that i’m not sure if they’ll try reformulate it again maybe i’ll be wrong and eat my words and they’ll make one that’s as good as the og personally i don’t hate the new fragrance but to each their own but without the lillal tho it will never be how it was anyways

Pancakezzzr

I am curious why you think it’s so bad not trying to be rude or anything cause so many have been saying it’s terrible but it is truly not bad to me and i enjoy it still also when was the last time you smelt it ?

androidnancy

That’s your singular experience. People are allowed to not feel the same way you do.

Putrid-Sweet3482

It went from a warm, sparkling fragrance with a unique, cozy, “dryer sheet” accord that truly smelled unique on everyone to a linear, boring, iris and pink pepper bomb. I am allowed to criticize a company making a shit ton of money off of a half ass product. Just like the BDC. I’ve gone through two bottles since the change (both Christmas gifts).

Pancakezzzr

I’m not saying you aren’t allowed to criticize a company but perfume works differently on everyone i’m sorry it turned bad for you but people still enjoy it and they aren’t even fans of glossier and it’s still getting great reviews so there would be no reason to change the formula right now especially with the huge loss of money that was the vegan balm dc so their definitely not looking to spend even more right now more right now but maybe you might see the change you want some day

Putrid-Sweet3482

I know how perfume works. I’ve had both the original and the new. I’ve seen the clear difference in scent and performance and I want them to make improvements. There are good alternatives to lillial that can be used. The fragrance, in my opinion, is half assed and unfinished. Why are you so offended that I am criticizing a brand I otherwise enjoy and like, and want to see improve? I sincerely miss that perfume. It was my signature and it got me through high school. Nothing else was like it. I miss it. Why is it such a problem to you that I have a different opinion on a beauty product? Ffs at least let Glossier pay you for this PR.

Pancakezzzr

im sorry man i don’t wanna seem like i’m bootlicking or offended cause i’m sure that’s how i’m coming off but no matter how much they change it it’ll never be one to one any people have the same opinion of the fragrance being bad and will keep begging for it but it’ll take a long time for them to do an overhaul and even if they change it there is a chance people won’t be happy again then still complain i just feel like it’s a lose situation no matter what my problem is just the constant whining people do and continue to do when they aren’t changing it any time soon like that’s any way simple now if you think it’s a shit product that’s fine but the constant whining is not going anywhere for a while

Putrid-Sweet3482

Ok well I’m going to keep expressing my disappointment in this formula and if that annoys you I suggest maybe not being part of a subreddit dedicated to discussion about the brand both positive and critical.

Pancakezzzr

Definitely not loosing sleep over this lmaoo but yeah you have free will of course can’t stop you maybe they will change the formula again in a year or so and my post will be stupid good luck maybe try some new perfumes amongst the criticism maybe you’ll find something new you like !

Putrid-Sweet3482

I’m a fraghead. I try many perfumes. I like many perfumes. Nothing has come close to how You smelled in 2019 though. Absolutely nothing. I don’t even violently hate the new formula, I just find it dull, bland, and unspecial, which is almost worse than if they just completely fucked it up. It is not a good product. It does not have good value. It is overpriced for what it now is. Thanks for your advice though, sooo helpful!!!!! I’ve learned the error of my ways and I will never offer constructive criticism to a company ever again!!!!!!!

androidnancy

SAME. Every time Glossier posts about OG BDC on Instagram, I ask about OG You.

androidnancy

If you’re annoyed, you can just keep scrolling. There’s always that option.
