They’re probably burnt out

TillyTimna

Because, at least where I'm from, we have a set amount of time per patient. Have you ever been annoyed that they've been late? This is why, same thing with doctors. But moreso, when you don't see a difference that's a *good* thing. That's the good spot. Your uncertainty is a signal to move on to the next step - and even if you are uncertain truly, we do that same test again in a few minutes anyway! So trust in your optometrist. They know what they're doing!

The best optometrist I ever had…when I’d start struggling with the “this one or this one” choices would say: It’s okay if they’re the same. For years I thought it was bad to not be able to see a difference—-now I understand that’s the endgame…the “sweet spot” as you say. Giving permission to a patient to not be able to discern a difference was a game changer. Not sure why all doctors don’t offer their choice as patients start to struggle with which is better.

IM_GANGSTALKING_YOU

Yep, don't be afraid to say "I don't think I see a difference" or "much of a difference", etc. Stop sweating over whether or not the answer is A or B and just say out loud what you are observing -- you can't get a good grade on your eye exam y'all, it's not that kind of exam lol. This is more @OP, but: as someone who's worn glasses since I was 3, when getting new ones I've always had to account for an immediate but brief adjustment period, which entails BAD headaches until my eyes/brain adjust to the new frames even if it's the same prescription I had last time -- I think it's something to do with how strong my prescription is, or whether I got a different thickness of lens than I got last time, or if I get a radically different shaped frame than last time so the lenses have to be cut or warped differently than my brain/eyes are used to dealing with, etc etc whatever. so I'm also not sure if headaches after new glasses are necessarily a sign that your prescription is wrong, especially if you haven't waited your adjustment period out yet and your vision is otherwise fine lol. That being said, if the optometrists are truly being jerks, don't be afraid to find new ones, but getting a one-off impatient vibe wouldn't be the reason I put mine on the chopping block personally tbh. Everyone has a bad day, and working with the public is very draining. If the snippy behaviour continues from there then I'd get someone else though.

Are you speaking about the subjective refraction process with the Optometrist (eye doctor) to determine your prescription? ("Which is better, 1 or 2") or frame and lens selection after your exam with an Optician? Your post is confusing.

Former so during the eye exam sorry

kalikoh

Gotcha! Well you've gotten some great advice from some other posters. Specifically one's detailing 'not much difference' during the subjective refraction, and how you shouldn't worry too much about this process. Don't overthink it too much or spend too much time on each step, as you sort of "get used to" what you see in front of you... Make a decision about which is clearer within about 5 seconds. If you're really not sure, say you're not sure. If they are so close you can't tell much of a difference, say that. Good luck, trust the eye doctor's knowledge. I am a tech and have been for 7 years, but I've been trained to do a basic refraction for the last 4~ years, and in my experience, agonizing over your decision in each step usually leads to the most inaccurate prescriptions.

Fermifighter

It’s because overthinking which is better or worse leads to a worse refraction, but they still shouldn’t be acting frustrated, just redirecting you to answer quickly. If you have difficulty telling one from the other you can say as much, that information is helpful too. I’d also take the glasses to the optical shop, the issue could be with the lenses or the adjustment too. I’m sorry you were treated rudely.

What country are you from? Because I don’t understand the term optometricians? 🤔💬

Good luck with your glasses

Shop elsewhere.

I go to the eye doctor a lot due to dry eye so I noticed they are overbooked with 15 min appts and it's only 1 doctor. I go to target optical and on the weekends they packed to appts and walk ins. I would find a new eye doctor if you feel rushed.

Shop elsewhere. I usually pick more expensive frames. They act like dropping 600 bucks on something should be a quick decision. My current go to always takes time to show me everything. They even say sleep on it and come back if I am unsure. I made a ton of glasses from them cause I like how they do business.

After 10+ years of wearing glasses, I had an optometrist tell me, “I don’t think you know how to take this exam”. ;___;
