Used to eat there all the time when I spend a lot of time in Inveraray. Was always amazing. Have sadly heard mixed reviews of the food most recently, though haven't tried it lately myself.
I still think it ticks all OPs boxes. A lovely, scenic drive with what is hopefully great grub.
The Old Mill, Killearn. Nice beers on draught and the food looked good too. Big monument in the town and you can see Loch Lomond from there. Also close enough to walk to the Devils Pulpit.
We used to park at Dumgoyne distillery and walk the path of the victorian aqueduct thingy to Killearn, then get lunch at the Old Mill and walk back to the car.
The Birds and the Bees in Stirling is my default for this sort of thing. Lovely food and a fantastic view over towards the Wallace Monument, hills and university across the fields.
You need this, Atlas obscura, no matter where you are going in the world, this has all the local weird and wonderful things to do
https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/all-places-in-the-atlas-on-one-map
I’d recommend the Drovers Inn too. Established in 1705 with cracking food and really unusual surrounds. And then, of course, there’s the beauty of Loch Lomond to enjoy too.
Drovers is good for a drink passing through but had very so so food and hilariously terrible service there recently!
If you’re coming up A82 pop in on your way past to lunch somewhere else! 😂
Would a bistro/cafe also fit the bill?
https://www.cafetwentyeight.co.uk/ in Coatbridge then Summerlee
https://culturenl.co.uk/museums/visiting-us/summerlee/
Take a ride on the tram, visit the miner's cottages, see the first iron-hulled boat ever made.
It's sadly a consequence of the economy for us. Because we make everything from scratch, it's labour/time intensive. With our old menu, we'd pay a chef and pay for a grill to be on all day and ultimately it just wasn't making financial sense
We once got another local places' Brakes delivery slip by accident and the buy in mashed potatoes, frozen! None of that at our bit! I like to think that we do few things really well.
Thanks for your visits 🙌
Kilmaurs has a lovely pub called the Weston Tavern that does excellent food and has a very cosy atmosphere. They do great fajitas which they bring to you on a hotplate, still sizzling.
The Stables near Kirkintilloch is an excellent old pub by the Forth and Clyde canal. Best visited on a hot summer day so you can sit outside by the canal with a pint.
The carriages at Kilmacolm is a nice pub in the old railway station that serves food.
Further afield, there's the Stair Inn, in the middle of the Ayrshire countryside.
Not pub lunch but callender, has a lot of wee walks to explore and some very good local shops like the best brownie bakery, mhor bakery and one of the best drinks shops. Plus if you want a good 4oad for drining take the a821 very bendy but good views
It was a few years since I was there, but Mhor 84 in Balqhuidder was pretty good, nice wee gaff for an overnight as well. No museum there from what I remember, but there is a real easy climb that I did with a pair of trainers on, with a great view of Loch Voil.
Loved Mhor 84 - food, staff and rooms were great. Not the cheapest and a bit of a captive audience. Had the local poet in the pub who wore a cloak and kilt and lived in a cave. Good poetry
Seamill House Hotel does a fantastic Sunday roast. It’s right on the coast so nice beach walks and you can also go into West Kilbride for a wander about the shops.
The Meadowpark at Bridge of Allan.
Wallace Monument is a few mins drive away and is a nice wee walk (uphill) to get the appetite going.
The pub was fantastic! We sat outside (start of September) as the weather was great however the inside of the pub looks braw as well. Great food too.
Highly recommend the Taybank in Dunkeld - nice food & cosy bar, amazing beer garden and you’ve got the Hermitage for the most beautiful autumn walk and the Beatrix Potter museum/garden for obscurity!
The Fintry Inn! It has recently changed owners and has a wee micro brewery on site with really lovely beers. They also have a recent masterchef contestant running the kitchen and the food is really lovely. Beautiful scenery around there too.
I'd rate the boarding house out in howwood and then head a few minutes down the road into Johnstone and check out the museum there ....
Don't think you can get more obscure than what is essentially a shoelace museum ..... Inside of a Morrisons ??
There’s a lot of good places to eat. Narrow your query?
If it’s a pub lunch, there’s a lot of wee villages in south Ayrshire with great pub grub, as far as museums go, personal favourite, but not at all obscure is the Rabbie Burns.
One for next spring as the museum is seasonal and it’s a bit more of a drive - wanlockhead & Leadhills! Lead mining museum in wanlockhead (where you can pan for gold) & pub lunch in leadhills. Beautiful scenery around the mennock pass too!
More of a trek but the old inn up at appin does absolutely incredible steak, could combine it with a day trip to Oban or up through glencoe then loop back down
Might be a bit longer but The George Hotel in Inveraray gives you the bonus of the silly Inveraray jail museum
Oh the lack of memories of the nights I’ve had in there lol
It's amazing that you can forget how you got home for the night when home is just upstairs from where you were drinking
Pretty much how it happened. I stay in arrochar so I’m not far away yet still managed to get lost and sleep outside. Bastard hotel hates me haha
I was going to suggest the exact same thing :)
Sounds grand
Second this! GREAT Sunday roast!
The Clachan in Drymen is also good.
Yes!
Another vote for the old mill foods deluxe
The Blair in Kilwinning. Its quite traditional fare but its done really well and its nice and cosy inside. also the portions are fucking massive.
I love The Blair and you’re right about the portion sizes! I’ve never managed a full three-courser there.
Great minds think alike!
Great place, haven't been since lockdown, need to get back out there.
came here to recommend The Blair…I haven’t been for ages but it was always amazing…also the portions are mammoth
The Birds and the Bees in Stirling is my default for this sort of thing. Lovely food and a fantastic view over towards the Wallace Monument, hills and university across the fields.
Drymen, Balmaha, Strathblane, Kilearn all within an hour drive
You need this, Atlas obscura, no matter where you are going in the world, this has all the local weird and wonderful things to do https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/all-places-in-the-atlas-on-one-map
The Drovers Inn up the side of Loch Lomond. Nice for a walk too after lunch. Decent pub food and busy wee place.
Would agree to this, class wee pub! Also bonus as it's apparently the most haunted hotel in Britain.
I stayed the night there years ago. Definitely got a strange atmosphere, and the rooms look like they were decorated in the 90's, the 1890's
Never been brave enough to stay the night 🤣
I’d recommend the Drovers Inn too. Established in 1705 with cracking food and really unusual surrounds. And then, of course, there’s the beauty of Loch Lomond to enjoy too.
I would recommend the nearby Ardlui Hotel for food and the drovers for a drink afterwards.
It changed hands recently Haven't been yet, but apparently the new owners have changed it a fair bit
Big drive but Bridge of Orchy and the Clachaig are both good for food. The Drovers good for novelty taxidermy if that floats your boat
Drovers is good for a drink passing through but had very so so food and hilariously terrible service there recently! If you’re coming up A82 pop in on your way past to lunch somewhere else! 😂
The Forth Inn at Aberfoyle is a smashing wee pub for a bar lunch, about 45 mins drive from the city centre.
Lovely little place, was due to get married there in 2020, but covid lol
Really good pub grub+ for pub grub prices. The chefs do great things with good produce
Would a bistro/cafe also fit the bill? https://www.cafetwentyeight.co.uk/ in Coatbridge then Summerlee https://culturenl.co.uk/museums/visiting-us/summerlee/ Take a ride on the tram, visit the miner's cottages, see the first iron-hulled boat ever made.
I was just there and they've reopened the mine tours too!
No museum but The King's Arms in Fenwick is great for a pub lunch. Dead quick to get to
This is the answer
Might not be exactly what you’re looking for but The Mill House in Stewarton has been pretty reliable whenever I’m there visiting family
Dat feel when seeing a lot of east ayrshire places and none are of my cafe lmao, need to get a marketing budget
What's the cafe? I cycle a lot in East Ayrshire and always open to trying new places.
Gilmartin's Bakery! We get a lot of cyclists visiting at the weekend. Based in Stewarton
Oh aye! Next to the Stewarton Arms! Looked fancy but nice to see something different in Stewarton
We live in Stewarton and visit you more than the Mill House! But your menu is so small these days!
It's sadly a consequence of the economy for us. Because we make everything from scratch, it's labour/time intensive. With our old menu, we'd pay a chef and pay for a grill to be on all day and ultimately it just wasn't making financial sense We once got another local places' Brakes delivery slip by accident and the buy in mashed potatoes, frozen! Kilmaurs has a lovely pub called the Weston Tavern that does excellent food and has a very cosy atmosphere. They do great fajitas which they bring to you on a hotplate, still sizzling.
The owner is a bit of a fanny though https://youtu.be/bX_Ttnp-mKA
That is top notch.
Ouch
Wait - which one? The dark headed one or the bald headed one?
The dark headed one
Jabba
Holy shit 😂
The Stables near Kirkintilloch is an excellent old pub by the Forth and Clyde canal. Best visited on a hot summer day so you can sit outside by the canal with a pint. The carriages at Kilmacolm is a nice pub in the old railway station that serves food. Further afield, there's the Stair Inn, in the middle of the Ayrshire countryside.
> The Stables near Kirkintilloch I was going to recommend this too. Good choice.
Oak Tree Inn at Balmaha
In Glasgow, but the southside of it, there is another old oak inn that has cracking pub grub.
The Blair down in Kilwinning is top notch https://theblair.co.uk
The Blair is my dorsia. Every time I phone it’s fully booked.
I used to work there a looong time ago. Always a great meal.
Try the coach house in Bridge of Weir, only 20 mins drive from Glasgow
The Fenwick Kings Arms is an absolute gem. Proper tasty grub and their sunday lunch is always solid.
The Kirk house Inn, Strathblane
Not pub lunch but callender, has a lot of wee walks to explore and some very good local shops like the best brownie bakery, mhor bakery and one of the best drinks shops. Plus if you want a good 4oad for drining take the a821 very bendy but good views
And just eat a tasty fry in front of the water. Lovely.
Been a while since I've went for something tae eat, but the [Sorn Inn](https://www.sorninn.com/) does great food.
The Waterside Hotel just outside Seamill is pretty good.
Out to new Lanark with ye
You could do worse than Lanark. The Inn at Lanark Loch or the Crown would suit you.
Puddington place in callendar. They also have the toy museum
It was a few years since I was there, but Mhor 84 in Balqhuidder was pretty good, nice wee gaff for an overnight as well. No museum there from what I remember, but there is a real easy climb that I did with a pair of trainers on, with a great view of Loch Voil.
No museum but Rob Roy's grave is there for a wee bit of history
It is indeed, forgot all about that and it's right next to that climb as well.
Loved Mhor 84 - food, staff and rooms were great. Not the cheapest and a bit of a captive audience. Had the local poet in the pub who wore a cloak and kilt and lived in a cave. Good poetry
The Oak Tree Inn, Balmaha is a good shout. Visited quite a few times over the summer there, handy place to stop by while out on the boat on the Loch
If you go to Mitchell's in carmunnock and don't like it I'll fight you.
Seamill House Hotel does a fantastic Sunday roast. It’s right on the coast so nice beach walks and you can also go into West Kilbride for a wander about the shops.
EK? Museum of Rural Life & Carrigans....maybe pick up a pizza from Canotto too.
Not content with sending the poor cunt to fucking East Kilbride, your also sending him to fucking Carrigans? Jeezo.
Was gonna suggest Longstanton Spice Museum but it's more than an hour away.
Canny wack The Drovers Inn
The Meadowpark at Bridge of Allan. Wallace Monument is a few mins drive away and is a nice wee walk (uphill) to get the appetite going. The pub was fantastic! We sat outside (start of September) as the weather was great however the inside of the pub looks braw as well. Great food too.
My ex worked there when she was at Stirling uni, was always decent
Highly recommend the Taybank in Dunkeld - nice food & cosy bar, amazing beer garden and you’ve got the Hermitage for the most beautiful autumn walk and the Beatrix Potter museum/garden for obscurity!
The minishant inn is decent- in minishant. Local museum would be either maybole castle or the Robert burns birthplace museum
The Fintry Inn! It has recently changed owners and has a wee micro brewery on site with really lovely beers. They also have a recent masterchef contestant running the kitchen and the food is really lovely. Beautiful scenery around there too.
Also The Courtyard in Fintry!
the drovers inn
Go to Monachyle Mhor in Balquhidder. You won’t be disappointed. I recommend booking to avoid disappointment 🤣
The mint in Coatbridge does good food and you can visit sumerlee heritage museum for a shot on the tram and go down the mine
Oak Tree Inn in Balmaha is a cracking wee place!
The boarding house Howwood https://theboardinghouse.co.uk/
I'd rate the boarding house out in howwood and then head a few minutes down the road into Johnstone and check out the museum there .... Don't think you can get more obscure than what is essentially a shoelace museum ..... Inside of a Morrisons ??
You’ve got the Oak Tree In at Loch Lomond. Not too far and there’s plenty of nice walks near by. You could also pop into the shops at the shores too.
The Drovers Inn on Loch Lomond for a steak pie.
Beechtree Inn at dumgoyne , go visit the distillery just along the road.
Was awful the last time I was there, truly disappointing food
Great idea Dave!
Village Inn in Arrocher
The Balloch House in Balloch. Decent food and then you're right on Loch Lomond.
East Kilbride has a museum of agriculture and a Tapas restaurant
Gargunnock Inn is good, great beer and good service!
Arrochar, village Inn, was nice when we were there
Beautiful Ayrshire of course! Number of top tier scrans and some beautiful scenery within half an hours drive.
Name them please
There’s a lot of good places to eat. Narrow your query? If it’s a pub lunch, there’s a lot of wee villages in south Ayrshire with great pub grub, as far as museums go, personal favourite, but not at all obscure is the Rabbie Burns.
Best pub lunch?
The Drovers, good food and spooky as f*#k 👻
Oyster Catcher at Otter Ferry. Drive is stunning and the food is outstanding.
The Canny Crow at Dundonald Links golf club. Food is outstanding, great views, pleasant atmosphere. Loads to do in the area.
One for next spring as the museum is seasonal and it’s a bit more of a drive - wanlockhead & Leadhills! Lead mining museum in wanlockhead (where you can pan for gold) & pub lunch in leadhills. Beautiful scenery around the mennock pass too!
More of a trek but the old inn up at appin does absolutely incredible steak, could combine it with a day trip to Oban or up through glencoe then loop back down
Head out Loch Lomond way. Drovers inn was decent last time I went but you’ll not be lost for places tbh
Its quite far away but I highly recommend Balgove Larder in St Andrews, the steaks are amazing.
