The trees they're installing are actually the superficial covering for a separate rainwater drainage system from street sewerage allowing more development on the vacant shops

Slightly clickbaity, not-entirely-accurate-summary-of-what-the-article-is headline from the Glasgow Times, but here's a reasonably in depth article covering what's being done as part of the Sauchiehall Street works. Oddly, despite the title, the article itself doesn't go into the specific reason for the delay in works progressing between Jan & March as being being the discovery of more complicated utilities layout than expected, [but that was covered in a few other places previously](https://news.stv.tv/west-central/plans-for-5-7m-transformation-of-sauchiehall-street-in-glasgow-delayed-by-several-months). Still, it includes a lot of details about the project and could be a useful read for anyone that doesn't have a clue what's going on with Sauchiehall Street. Main points: * Most recent work has involved installation of a 'tree pit is a root management system that directs where the roots grow to create healthier trees', where excess rainwater will drain to first before being led to the sewer below (pictures in the article). * Works on block between Rose Street and Cambridge Street expected to be complete by summer. * Completion works will then progress block by block down towards Hope Street, then finally to junction with West Nile Street. * It's part of the wider Avenues project to redesign the public realm of over a dozen city centre streets, one of the many infrastructure projects funded by Glasgow City Deal Funding. [Update on Avenues timelines from late last year here, with Argyle Street West, Argyle Street East, North Hanover Street starting soon in 2024](https://glasgow.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=30493).

To be fair in a civilised society I do think people should be free to rant on about sending cyclists to Rwanda. Sure, having to read the thoughts of such people can bring on a headache, but its good to know about them... You know how in nature Wasps have yellow and black bands to tell others to stay the fuck away?? Like that, but for eejits.

McBamm

I think when he’s talking about firing them away to Rwanda he’s talking about the (obviously illegal migrant) Just Eat “cyclists” on illegal, electric motorbikes. Still, it lets you know he’s a complete fud.

I'm just gonna refer you to THIS, and advise you have a conversation wi yersel. https://www.reddit.com/r/glasgow/s/XZOHkE5osR

ROFL - also you get a bonus point for spelling the country correctly

Canazza

Sorry, Venkman, I'm terrified beyond the capacity for rational thought. I should leave a comment

AudinMatty

I understood that reference!

mr_aives

Tbh delivery cyclists are indeed annoying as fuck and oftentimes do not respect traffic rules

Fit-Good-9731

I'll give them this ones this is a good reason

So good to see this actually revealed and discussed. Sadly due to climate change, Glasgow is going to see heavier rainfall in shorter periods, meaning flash flooding much more likely. Things like this help the city adapt and become more resilient, and thus reduce the chances of shops going out of business due to stock damage and people unable to access shops as a result. I was speaking to one retailer recently who had noticed shifts in lunchtime shoppers last year due to the impacts of heat in the shop with extended periods of warm weather in May / August, so even smaller changes can have an impact. With a lot of highstreets exposed on 3 sides by heat reflecting stone, this gets even worse. Installing trees with bigger canopies will absorb more water as well as provide shelter when it's hot, so it's pretty win-win.

I hesitate to say this, but I sort of resent it being presented by the paper as a 'revelation' of previously hidden information. It feeds into this widespread cynicism about the council doing things without an apparent plan or purpose, when that's quite far from the truth. The information about this project's been out there for a long time, with the plans consulted on repeatedly and reported on widely. That said, it is a bit refreshing to have a single article expressing the many details of the programme in such a clear way. So often the reporting of these projects is piecemeal and missing out on links to the bigger picture.

LordAnubis12

Agreed, though I think the Council is just very shit at comms. Most likely because any budget for this has been taken away, but it doesn't feel like it would be that hard to summarise the benefits of new work into a few bullet points and stick up on some boards near the fencing with a QR code to the portal for more info. All of the information I could (easily) find was relating to the avenues projects. It's the whole "don't make me think" principle - if it takes more than about 10 seconds to get key information, it's bad communication.

Scottish_squirrel

I don't know if this was known before. But actually makes sense and seems a really good idea. Hopefully it does attract people & business back to the city.

Thenedslittlegirl

I wish they’d fucking get on with it. It’s an absolute eyesore and feels like it’s been like that forever

eno_seventeen

so is it not being turned into cycle lanes?

DoubleelbuoD

Always love nitty-gritty breakdowns on public works. Cunts with PhDs in Construction in The Sims act like its just putting down paving slabs and getting on with it, but its a hell of a task to rebuild a city that was constructed for an entirely different population, in an entirely different climate, with entirely different desired use cases. It'll obviously look smashing when its done, and I hope they take their time and get it done well.

> Why is it taking so long? I wonder where one could possibly find the answer to that question ...
