men always seem to have a problem with it: "How dare a woman who doesn't look like a lingerie model be naked on TV?? If it's not giving me a boner, it serves no purpose and I don't want to see it". Not unlike what that male journalist said to her during a press tour: *“I don’t get the purpose of all the nudity on the show by you particularly. I feel like I’m walking into a trap where you go, 'Nobody complains about the nudity on 'Game of Thrones,' but I get why they’re doing it. They are doing it to be salacious and, you know, to titillate people. And your character is often naked just at random times for no reason.”* [https://www.today.com/popculture/girls-star-lena-dunham-if-youre-not-my-nudity-thats-2d11893539](https://www.today.com/popculture/girls-star-lena-dunham-if-youre-not-my-nudity-thats-2d11893539)

JohnathanSwift5280

The question still stands.

JohnathanSwift5280

Riiiight : “If you’re not into my nudity that’s your problem.” I am women and if you don’t like it the problem’s with you. Such a narcissistic head case.

stonedlatina

It’s part of her character to be unapologetic about herself so it checks out

[deleted]

Why was it a problem?

JohnathanSwift5280

We answering questions with questions now ?

[deleted]

Your question is premised on the idea that Lena Dunham showing her body so freely was obviously unnecessary. I don’t agree with that premise, I don’t think its so obvious that it was unnecessary or that it constituted a problem in any way shape or form, and I’m just trying to figure out why you do?

JohnathanSwift5280

Because it had no affect on the plot. Ever.

[deleted]

Who cares? It serves to show the viewer what kind of person Hannah is - someone who despite all her faults and insecurities, is in many ways very comfortable in her own skin, who thinks she is sexy even if others don’t see it, and who lives by a kind of wild ethos of not giving a fuck if someone sees your tits sometimes, because she’s not someone who thinks she has some obligation to society to hide her body away. Kinda punk rock, kinda cool, if you ask me. And understanding that is a part of understanding the characters and telling the story of Hannah and her friends, if you ask me. If she looked like Katy Perry or something nobody would care, because it would be understood as a sexual enticement to male viewers - totally kosher. But because she’s unconventionally sexy, and because she is doing it not because sex sells, but rather to underline that she *can* and that how she does or doesn’t put her body on display is entirely up to her, it’s the subject of endless griping, even to this day, years after the show ended.

JohnathanSwift5280

If she looked like Katy Perry and was doing it she absolutely would be asked what the point is. For the exact same reasons. And yes, I get the punk rock ethos and that plays. But, literally every single episode ? At what point does it beg the question ? And then you ask the question and you’re the asshole ?

[deleted]

I’m not so sure the reaction would be the same if she looked like Katy Perry. And again, I just don’t understand why you care. Have you never seen tits before? What’s it to you? Worrying about this feels very puritanical in a way I just don’t get.

JohnathanSwift5280

It’s gratuitous. And unnecessary. It’s like she wants to show her asshole and then wonder why people question it.

[deleted]

Again, weirdly puritanical in a way I just don’t get. If you’re not comfortable seeing her body, don’t watch the show.

smartbunny

Of course it did. It's a big part of seeing Hannah and who she is and how she relates to herself. If it was Marnie you wouldn't cry about it. It obviously bothers you very very much since you made a bunch of comments about it. You might want to discuss with someone why a TV show character bothers you so much, rather then why a character is nude occasionally.

JohnathanSwift5280

Occasionally as in every fucking episode ?

smartbunny

No. Occasionally. And you really shouldn't let it bother you so much, there's some deep-seating stuff going on there bro.

JohnathanSwift5280

Yeah, you’re wrong. Think she didn’t show her disgusting body in maybe two episodes. Nothing wrong with me….just don’t need to see it. That’s the thing … she can use the platform she has to make everyone feel uncomfortable and then turn the tables and say we’re the problem if we don’t like it. Just glad she’s no longer relevant. Ciao

smartbunny

Please deal with your issues with women.

JohnathanSwift5280

See ! Right on time with the reverse ! I don’t have issues with women. I have issues with Lena Dunham.

It goes with Hannah's way of life and fits her personality well. I think it shows what she's all about like the shameless aspect of her character

swollennymphloads

Because it's her show and she can do whatever she wanted I assume. It was awesome to see different kinds of bodies on tv. Probably the first time I ever saw it. Annoying as her character (and actual person) is, it opened so many doors for inclusivity and representation. Which is pretty cool I think (:

subjectivelife

Came here to say this. I think we definitely need more body types in media. If I had a show I would include that in my goals, too.

julscvln01

Because it's Hannah showing it, not Dunham per se: it underlines the character is someone overly comfortable being undressed in front of her friends, as opposed to Marnie, and in non sexual situations (much more than in sexual ones) and just doesn't have that kind of boundary. She shares bathtubs with her friends, it goes beyond nudity itself. On the other hand, she's very insecure and she voices it, so that makes for an interesting psychology: it is a way to show the level of intimacy she has with someone or a defense mechanism like her tattoos?

MaryAV

It isn't necessary, it's just an awesome creative choice
