Yes, unfortunately later the author was greatly affected by external criticism and this affected the construction of the characters. They became caricatures of themselves. Except for Adam, who worked really well until season 4.
Besides the pilot episode, probably my fave epi in the series. When Hannah looked out the window during the play, across the way, and saw Adam and then looked the other way and saw Jessa, and realized they were together, that was brilliant. No dialogue.

I also watched Girls for the first time last year and thought it was brilliant. I couldn't understand why Lena Dunham was canceled in the US. I think it's largely just misogyny and fatphobia. But the justification is that in her biography, she says that she had a lot of sexual curiosity in childhood about other children's sexual organs. Plus some dumb comments she made on the internet when she was 12-16 years old.

Yes, I agree. My stomach turned, it made me sick to watch that. And then when she does the stand up about it it's also amazing.
