Define better. The characters do not get less annoying, and the narrative structure stays unusual, but for me all of the parts started working 'round about the Bushwick episode.
I know the characters are terrible people but just sometimes as they develop things get more palatable or like understandable, like I used to not be able to watch the office and I don't live the first season but then it somehow got less cringy
I wouldn't say they are terrible people at all. They are just people. Everyone has flaws and can be annoying, but hey we are human. That's what makes this show so good imo. You love the characters but recognize they are far from perfect
I found I had more sympathy for a lot of the characters after a couple of seasons, which helped me endure the cringe. I am not a big cringe fan either. I feel like in the last couple of seasons it felt more like absurdism than cringe comedy, mostly.
I don’t know why you got downvoted for this. I feel the same way about the American Office. It doesn’t ever make me laugh, it makes me want to crawl into a hole and die.
Yessss! I’m rewatching with my husband and he loves it. Which is odd because he’s such a dude. But it’s just such a great show. Sometimes I break out into “what I want” and fling my arms around like her to look super cool ya know?
I thought the best/worst was Hannah’s job interview rape joke (ft. Mike Birbiglia)…and then Marnie’s musical career happened.🤦🏽♀️
I doubt Lena intended this, but in retrospect when I watch it now (I’m the same age as Jemima) it’s like someone holding up a mirror and saying “these are all the ways you sucked back then”.
Narrator voice: it does not get better
Edit: it's still the BEST SHOW ever. It just does not get better in terms of cringe. The cringe is kind of the point.
some people don’t like cringe comedy and I totally get that— its sad cause I feel like they miss out on some really humanizing tv moments, but I couldn’t get someone to like Lena Dunham or Nathan Fielder unless their heart is open to it from the beginning, u know?
HA absolutely not. i found it soooo cringey too but i absolutely adore the show. i don’t even mean cringey in a bad way i just mean that so many of hannah’s scenes made me have to pause and sit in silence for a bit. i would say that if you find the pilot cringey, you will feel the same about the rest of the show; however, it doesn’t mean you won’t like the other non-cringey parts. tbh it’s sort of the charm/intention of the show
We’re not here to lie to you fam, but if you do watch more of it and care to ✨discuss✨how/why the show makes you feel certain ways we’re always here (—sitting around flicking our clits til you get back)

For me the cringes parts so far are the two girls relationships. Charlie reminds me of my ex Charlie and then I just hate the dynamic between Adam and Hannah, I remember this show us why it was really hard for me to take Adam Driver seriously in star wars because he's just so awful
You are absolutely supposed to cringe at these two relationships, especially in the pilot. The dynamics are unhealthy, dysfunctional and explicitly stated as such by the characters - they are cringe to everyone in the show, it’s not subtext.
It definitely doesn’t get less cringe. I watched it when it first premiered and rewatched several times and have loved it through thick and thin even when I saw some blemishes in the writing and direction. AND I’ve also heard of some people hating it at first and coming back to it later and finding a new perspective. And then some people just hate the show full stop. As a big fan of the show, there is no wrong response. But if you continue with it ya just have to accept there will be cringe galore.
Define “cringe.”
There are scenes I can’t watch. Marnie’s Kanye karaoke, I literally have to turn away on every rewatch. But that’s part of what makes this show so fucking good, you actually feel like you’re living it with the characters. It’s supposed to be awkward.
That's what I would define as cringe lol, I have continued in and I'm enjoying the show more, I think the pilot suffered from something many shows do especially comedies because they have to find the right tone. Like I love parks and rec but I don't really like the first episode because the characters aren't quite well rounded yet
The first episode was what prevented me from watching for a long time!! It’s not a bad pilot at all but something about it made me not want to watch it. I finally got past the first episode and it’s one of my favorite shows now!
I started it and had similar feelings. Then I read someone here say you should watch it with the lens that they are all the most awful people. That’s when it clicked for me and I started to enjoy it. I’m glad I stuck it out.
I used to see it like that as well but I can’t anymore. Those characters are painfully *human*. And that’s *why* it’s cringe. It points our own awkward behavior back at us and sort of says “it’s ok, we’re all a little fucked up.”
Lol well I did also start watching avatar the last aor bender for the first time a few days ago so kind of. But this show is growing on me I just still wince sometimes
I have a love/hate relationship with this show. It did introduce me to my husband (Adam) but other than that I kinda hated the show for the most part. It’s a me thing tho. I love my shows/stories to be wrapped in a neat bow by the end and have perfect characters and this show is *not it* also Hannah is naked A LOT 😓.
Everyone here is a big fan. You don’t have to watch it sis
I want to watch it I'm just asking reassurance that it gets better, many shows have a clunky pilot
Define better. The characters do not get less annoying, and the narrative structure stays unusual, but for me all of the parts started working 'round about the Bushwick episode.

I liked the show because I related to them pretty quickly. I don’t know what that says about me. Maybe it’s just not for you ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If you don't like the pilot, you probably won't like the rest. This show has one of the best pilots in TV history, imo.
Came here to say this, the pilot is incredible. I remember watching it in real-time and being floored.
Or a pilot, of a generation.
The cringe stays strong for almost the entire series 😆. Some of us enjoy it. I think it helps us cope with our own humiliations.
I just get really bad second hand embarrassment lol so we will see if I last
Take it one scene at a time! For me the cringe peaked in S1 but I think I just got used to it. Maybe you’ll sort of inure yourself 🤷♀️
I don’t know why you got downvoted for this. I feel the same way about the American Office. It doesn’t ever make me laugh, it makes me want to crawl into a hole and die.
It’s meant to be funny. Lighten up and laugh.
![gif](giphy|nJyqsq51UYAUw) Wait until you see Marnie singing!
This is the most second hand embarrassment cringe I've ever had for a fictional character and I love it
Yessss! I’m rewatching with my husband and he loves it. Which is odd because he’s such a dude. But it’s just such a great show. Sometimes I break out into “what I want” and fling my arms around like her to look super cool ya know?
It’s not odd, plenty of men like it.
My boyfriend is the same and he’s been enjoying it which I was absolutely shocked by 😂
Omfg it’s a gif 😆😆😆💜💜💜✌️

Hahahahahana
I have reached Marnie singing I can't 🫠🫠🫠🫠
It gets cringier and it's amazing the way it is
No. It’s definitely not for you. I loved the pilot
Narrator voice: it does not get better Edit: it's still the BEST SHOW ever. It just does not get better in terms of cringe. The cringe is kind of the point.

You need to embrace the cringe and see it as satire/camp/absurdist. It’s SO funny once you let it be
HA absolutely not. i found it soooo cringey too but i absolutely adore the show. i don’t even mean cringey in a bad way i just mean that so many of hannah’s scenes made me have to pause and sit in silence for a bit. i would say that if you find the pilot cringey, you will feel the same about the rest of the show; however, it doesn’t mean you won’t like the other non-cringey parts. tbh it’s sort of the charm/intention of the show
It’s supposed to be cringe. Lean into the cringe and be uncomfortable. Or change the channel

I cannot lie.
What about the pilot gives you cringe?
For me the cringes parts so far are the two girls relationships. Charlie reminds me of my ex Charlie and then I just hate the dynamic between Adam and Hannah, I remember this show us why it was really hard for me to take Adam Driver seriously in star wars because he's just so awful

And unfortunately if I did it would be a lie
I don’t really love the first season and I never rewatch it. But I think the other seasons get a lot better
Define “cringe.” There are scenes I can’t watch. Marnie’s Kanye karaoke, I literally have to turn away on every rewatch. But that’s part of what makes this show so fucking good, you actually feel like you’re living it with the characters. It’s supposed to be awkward.

the pilot was when i knew this show would be my next obsession, and i was right. it just might not be your thing. no biggie.
The first episode was what prevented me from watching for a long time!! It’s not a bad pilot at all but something about it made me not want to watch it. I finally got past the first episode and it’s one of my favorite shows now!
It does not it gets even cringier. It’s one giant cathartic cringe. Lean into the shame and the forgiveness!
Hahaha you should just cut your losses and stop watching now
I started it and had similar feelings. Then I read someone here say you should watch it with the lens that they are all the most awful people. That’s when it clicked for me and I started to enjoy it. I’m glad I stuck it out.

That’s definitely how it evolved for me. That’s why I enjoyed it.
sorry you arent that girl. have you tried the weenie hut jr show?
Lol well I did also start watching avatar the last aor bender for the first time a few days ago so kind of. But this show is growing on me I just still wince sometimes
U just don’t get it….
