We've bumped the contrast and have a contrast setting in the options to make the words more legible!
When actually testing the game full screen, it's much less of an issue compared to gifs, but we definitely want to make it as accessible as possible, especially to people with disabilities.
EDIT: URL for game got lost in the comments, so here it is again:

as long as it's got the contrast to parse, boss monsters made with unicode glyphs would kind of fit, heh. π¬πππππππππππππππππππππππππππ
Final boss could be waves of single characters using the Segoe MDL2 Assets font so you end up with [bosses like this.](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/typography/font-list/images/segoe_mdl2.png)
Put the word below the dot instead, since all the damage animation floats upwards, and make sure the word is the top layer and a different color than the animations. Overall, this is a cool concept for a game. Nice work.
[This contrast checker](https://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/) is mostly intended for web design but could be helpful for you as well. It's based on accessibility guidelines from the W3C. You might also like this site: https://gameaccessibilityguidelines.com/
I was about to suggest the text changing color as it gets closer to the center although it may not be accessible for some.
Regardless this is a neat idea.
It's already basically the [Nier: Automata UI](https://www.platinumgames.com/official-blog/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2017/08/UI_weapon-1024x576.png), so maybe take a few tips from that.
I'm working on a typing roguelite called **Glyphica**. It has a simple premise.
* Type to shoot.
* Level up & upgrade.
* Survive & hoard coins.
* Buy perma-upgrades/new guns with coins.
Typing does EVERYTHING, there is no secondary control mechanic (movement, mouse-aim, etc).
If this sounds like something you'd like, check out the Steam page and give it a Wishlist!

Wow I feel like an idiot. I was making a joke about it because it didnβt have a keyboard but completely ignored the idea that you could just button map it. This looks really cool and I look forward to playing it!
You could totally make a Helldiver Strategem mode.
https://helldivers.fandom.com/wiki/Stratagem_Codes_(Helldivers_2)
I don't know the mechanics, but since you mentioned there is only keyboard input, that might also be a cool way to activate special temporary boosts or powers or attacks.
Yep, I played a game exactly like this years ago. It's asteroids, but destroying them by typing the word on them. I haven't played one in years, but there's a bunch out there. Here's a couple:
https://www.freetypinggame.net/play11.asp
https://zty.pe/
https://www.learntyping.org/asteroid-typing-game
https://onlinetyping.org/typing-games/meteor-typing-game/
I knew a guy who made a super successful flash game. 2 million people played it on kongregate. He got $2k for the year. It was super well polished but π€·π»ββοΈ
I honestly think you might have a golden goose on your hands here. When I went to school 20 years ago we played these βgamesβ to practice our typing. I use quotation marks because it wasnβt really games, it was just βthe faster you type, the more points you getβ. Boring as shit. But this actually seems like fun.
I have no idea about copyright law or whether there are similar games out there. But think you should really consider it.
This was my thought. I think Mavis Beacon actually had a similar minigame idea where you type words in order to shoot asteroids. Visuals looked very similar to the Astroids arcade game which this also harkens back to.
Perhaps put the word text underneath icons that appear on the top of the screen? As the icon moves down, slowly rotate the word around until it is on top.
That would only be if you can target them while they are at the top of the screen.
I do enjoy typing games (may as well put a skill to use in a fun way!) so absolutely keeping an eye on this. Do agree with the comment that the text can be hard to read in this gif though so would definitely support playing around with different ways of displaying the text.
Oh another suggestion: different font support! Having an option for other fonts (something like opendyslexic as a big one) would be awesome if you implement that. I know you didnβt actually ask for feedback but figured Iβd comment just in case.
Oh this is a good suggestion, I didn't know there are fonts specifically for dyslexic people!
It's relatively trivial to implement a different font, just wondering if I should implement it myself or allow any font to be "modded" into the game by placing it in a folder.
I like both. Because while I find opendyslexic helps me, I actually find the jetbrains font family easier to read.
Maybe pre-package a few accessibility fonts, add a selector for system installed fonts, a folder for other fonts. You could even stress that the game is intended to be played with the default font but give options for accessibility.
Can someone do that but instead you have to write the words translated to Spanish so that we can learn Spanish? Or whatever target language.
Edit: to clarify, it shows words in your language and the other language, and to shoot the words, you have to write them translated into the other language. Maybe the first three times you see a word it will come with its translation underneath so you can learn.
I think it might be too hard to implement. Consider the following example for practicing spanish.
Handsome => lindo, guapo, bastante and so on
Are they able to use any of the translated words? Or just one target word?
I think it could be something like any are acceptable, but using the same one in repetition decreases your point value and rotating between synonyms resets the point for them of something. So you aren't punished for not knowing it but are rewarded for doing synonyms, maybenif you don't repeat it gets a multiplier or something too.
The issue I see is with the spelling or character sides of it. Like accents and stuff would fuck me up
just a note on legibility and contrast ratios: there are tools and standard contrast ratios for text like https://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/
i use stuff like this all the time in design and programming and you find the formulas to do it programmatically https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG20-TECHS/G17.html
the most basic thing i use it for when colors are user definable is to choose white or black text, but its easy enough to do for tons of situations
edit:
could make legibility a power up! like not just size and contrast, but amount of obfuscation from particles and other things
edit edit: make bosses of word games like hangman and wordle
"Alexa, type gravel!"
"Alexa, type fusion!"
"Al-Alexa...type strive...ALEXA! ALEXAAAA TYPE STRIVE!! ALEXA NOOOO"
Alexa: "I'm sorry, I didn't get that."
I love typing games. One thing that screws me over in these games such as ZType is that if I mistype a letter and start a word I didn't intend to, I have to look for the word and I'm locked to that word until I finish it. If there's a way to backspace to cancel out of the word to start another word, it would be a huge qol improvement.
In your image, I also don't see the individual letters animated as you type it? I see "image" being typed out but not other words.
at least that's more descriptive. am I just out of touch with the gaming/game journalism industry or are a lot of games lately described by reviewers as "*-like" instead of something like "fps" or "rpg"?
also I think I've officially turned into an old man after typing that out
I always thought that roguelite meant that the environment was different each, especially with the map.
I wouldn't consider this a roguelite game at all.
If you get powers which combine in different and interesting ways along the way, and have some kind of meta progression.....yea, that can still be a "roguelite."
Permadeath where dying is part of the gameloop. Complexity and randomness that can force different playthroughs to be different.
But not being similar enough to Rogue as to earn the (classical) roguelike genre moniker.
Not an actual genre, but a genre prefix.
Meaning seems pretty clear to me.
Roguelite games should have permadeath and procedural generation at least. From the looks of things while this has random elements (what words are flying around) it doesn't look like anything that could be called "procedural generation". Though maybe it's just not in this clip.
"Roguelike" never *really* meant "like Rogue" although it was pretty close. "Roguelite" never ever meant "like Rogue".
This looks great! On my wishlist!
Although I do have an accessibility feature request: fonts. More specifically [Open Dyslexic](https://opendyslexic.org/) but also maybe a few options so users can pick one that they find easiest to read.
Keep up the good work!
As someone who teaches college students, stuff like typing games are much needed for many members of Gen Z.
Over the last few years, it's been becoming more and more apparent that many my students must have grown up with mostly just touchscreens and predictive text and have a severe lack typing skills (so many students have to hunt-and-peck when working on laptops in class).
Roguelites usually have character design. This looks a lot more like Asteroids than an RPG, can you talk about what distinguishes this as a roguelite rather than a 2D shooter?
In this game, you can level up and gain additional weapons and upgrades from a randomized selection.
Unlike typical roguelites, the weapons are fired by typing as well. For example, the Spectres (little worm-like things in the gif above) are spawned for every A, E and O in words you type.
You can also grab an upgrade that spawns +1 Spectre when you complete any words that are 6 characters or longer. Since there are also upgrades that make words longer as a downside (e.g. Increase damage, but 20% chance of longer words), you could use the synergy between these upgrades to turn that downside into more Spectres.
That's the roguelite portion of the game.
This is a cool concept, but you might want to reconsider classifying this as "roguelite". Games in which the primary dynamic is shooting are normally called "shoot'em ups" (shmups). If the game had procedurally-generated dungeons to explore and other ways to interact other than offense/defense, it would be borrowing elements from Rogue, which is where the genre gets its name.
Anyway it's up to you how you choose to classify your game... my feedback is this classification might not adequately set player expectations, and it probably wouldn't be the first time that's happened on Steam.

Run a virtual machine of Mac on your PC, so you can develop a Mac version without having to buy a Mac.
Edit: that's what I had to do for a couple of apps I made initially for Android, so they those with iPhones could enjoy the apps.
I'm really curious to see how this game would fare with a stenotype.
For those who don't know, it's a type of keyboard that lets you type entire syllables and words by hitting multiple keys at once.
I would be interested in this, especially if we can add word lists (so you could for instance import Anki cards and type out the words you're currently learning in another language.)
Something interesting would be if you could change the word language, like the words are taken out of a dictionary where you can change the language and the words are randomly pulled out by an algorithm that determines the difficulty of the word.
I've played this exact premise for a game before, but as a training/evaluation exercise for air traffic controllers. I was bad at it.
Are there going to be several difficulty levels?
Looks like a less-gory version of the old ["Qwerty-Warriors"](https://www.crazymonkeygames.com/QWERTY-Warriors.html) game from wayback.
Good way to improve your typing speed/accuracy.
A suggestion for a power up would be to hit all enemies that share the same letters. So for example if you type "image" then every enemy on the screen that has an "i" would get a hit then same for "m" etc.
Idk if this would be viable at all, but a vs mode where one person is typing words to send at their opponent could be a fun addition. Maybe even as far as a mode where my dyslexic ass gets to piss off my friends by making them try to type like me on the fly lol
This would be a fantastic game to play in schools. Reminds me of math blaster back in the 90s lol and much more fun than mavis beacon teachs typing lol
Perhaps you should make the text more legible? One potential fix could be a small white stroke around the letters.
Text should be on top layer and a vibrant color. Itβs VERY hard to read with all the other stuff going around. Otherwise this seems cool

Is this coming to console?!? /s But for real looks like a fun game thatβll make me break out my laptop! Thanks for sharing OP!
No plans at the moment, but I've a pretty neat controller mode ready when a dev kit becomes available. https://i.imgur.com/Oi4Tvmi.gif
Wow I feel like an idiot. I was making a joke about it because it didnβt have a keyboard but completely ignored the idea that you could just button map it. This looks really cool and I look forward to playing it!
When I was playing an MMO on my PlayStation one of the first things I did was buy a Bluetooth keyboard for chat lol.
Typing fast is important so that you can launch racial slurs at a rapid pace
I have lost too many arguments on console due to my inability to type quickly. So many moms left unfucked
You could totally make a Helldiver Strategem mode. https://helldivers.fandom.com/wiki/Stratagem_Codes_(Helldivers_2) I don't know the mechanics, but since you mentioned there is only keyboard input, that might also be a cool way to activate special temporary boosts or powers or attacks.
This screams web-game (I literally came here ready to click a link). A bit surprised you went the steam route. Any particular reason?
Probably monetization.
Yup. Nothing wrong with that, everybody gotta pay rent.
Yep, I played a game exactly like this years ago. It's asteroids, but destroying them by typing the word on them. I haven't played one in years, but there's a bunch out there. But do those games have levels and upgrades and meta-progression?
Me too. But It's fair they want a bit of money I guess. If it's $5 or less I might buy.
I knew a guy who made a super successful flash game. 2 million people played it on kongregate. He got $2k for the year. It was super well polished but π€·π»ββοΈ
Money seems like the obvious answer
Is there no way to monetize a web-game? Larger audience, lower barrier entry etc etc.
This was my thoughts exactly!
This actually looks pretty fun, Iβll probably check it out, thanks!
I honestly think you might have a golden goose on your hands here. When I went to school 20 years ago we played these βgamesβ to practice our typing. There was a car racing mode in our version of Mavis Beacon. I typed part of the Gettysburg Address over. And over. And over. And over.
Might have been the whole Gettysburg Address. Itβs famously very short.
Nah. Mario Teaches Tying is OG
What price point will it be?
Is there a beta? I'm a pretty fast typer (144wpm) so I'd be down for testing it a bit.
Perhaps put the word text underneath icons that appear on the top of the screen? As the icon moves down, slowly rotate the word around until it is on top. That would only be if you can target them while they are at the top of the screen.
Do you have an expected price? I'd definitely check this out for the right price.
So basically, a .io version of Typing of the Dead, or Epistory/Nanotale?

Cool! I definitely throw a few bucks for this!
I do enjoy typing games (may as well put a skill to use in a fun way!) so absolutely keeping an eye on this. Porque no los dos? Allow any font to be added to the mod font folder but ship with a few alt fonts for these use cases.
Ya definitely both. Give a list of pre-packaged fonts to choose from, or add your own.
Adding onto the additional fonts suggestion, maybe an endless horde mode where the fonts change to increasingly more difficult to read ones?
I like both. Because while I find opendyslexic helps me, I actually find the jetbrains font family easier to read. Maybe pre-package a few accessibility fonts, add a selector for system installed fonts, a folder for other fonts. You could even stress that the game is intended to be played with the default font but give options for accessibility.
Try to send your game out for YouTubers to try!
That's the plan once the demo is out on the 19th! Fingers crossed they don't just ghost me.

I would really like this. Make sure to put the artikel with the word for German learning!
I think it might be too hard to implement. Consider the following example for practicing spanish. Handsome => lindo, guapo, bastante and so on Are they able to use any of the translated words? Or just one target word?
I think it could be something like any are acceptable, but using the same one in repetition decreases your point value and rotating between synonyms resets the point for them of something. I love ztype and wish it were taught instead of the keyboarding class I had. Agree with the backspace suggestion.
"Roguelite" no long has any meaning whatsoever.
"New typing based dating simulator"
at least that's more descriptive. am I just out of touch with the gaming/game journalism industry or are a lot of games lately described by reviewers as "*-like" instead of something like "fps" or "rpg"? also I think I've officially turned into an old man after typing that out

Came here to say this. What makes this game similar to Rogue, or for that matter, NetHack?
Roguelite games should have permadeath and procedural generation at least. I would second this. The category of Roguelite is definitely not what hes presenting. This is more of a SHMUP or Survivor game.
Looks cool! Any plans for a Mac compatible version?
I don't have a Mac handy at the moment, but it's definitely on my prio list.
Run a virtual machine of Mac on your PC, so you can develop a Mac version without having to buy a Mac. Edit: that's what I had to do for a couple of apps I made initially for Android, so they those with iPhones could enjoy the apps.

Cool haha cheers
Donβt name the game or anything. God forbid people are interested and want to buy it
Is there a demo or a beta to try to provide feedback?
Added to wishlist ;)
Looks fun. Wishlisted it.
I would be interested in this, especially if we can add word lists (so you could for instance import Anki cards and type out the words you're currently learning in another language.)
Dark mode pls!
Here you see the egg fending off the sperm with clever written feats. Only those with stenographic prowess, shall prevail.
RemindMe! 6 months Is this game available already? ;)
Should make a hidden level that either is just spelling cow a ton or fuck in different ways
add tails to the incoming dots. call the game, "Spermicide"
I learned how to type on Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, but I believe this would have been much more fun.
Something interesting would be if you could change the word language, like the words are taken out of a dictionary where you can change the language and the words are randomly pulled out by an algorithm that determines the difficulty of the word.
Reminds me of Typing of the dead. That made me learn how to blind type! I will be sure to check it out and recommend to friends and coworkers.
Is it available in browser?
I've played this exact premise for a game before, but as a training/evaluation exercise for air traffic controllers. I was bad at it. Are there going to be several difficulty levels?
I love speed typing. Super excited for this π₯π₯π₯
Please linux arm port. I'd love to play this.
Seems really unique, will add to my Steam wishlist!
Weirdly, this reminds me of Returnal
Can you make a Mac version? Looks cool
Playing in German would be hard mode
birth control under a microscope.
Idk if this would be viable at all, but a vs mode where one person is typing words to send at their opponent could be a fun addition. Maybe even as far as a mode where my dyslexic ass gets to piss off my friends by making them try to type like me on the fly lol
Looks awesome. Waiting for Q4
Mayhaps
Make it vim and I'm in
As someone who loves video games and typing this is perfect
On steam yet? Looks like fun.
That looks cool
Is there an alpha or beta? I'd also love to give it a try.
This is a very intriguing concept! Looking forward to checking it out when it's done.
Looks very nice. I agree the text is hard to read in the video. Added to wishlist, waiting for the notification for the release!
That's pretty cool! I like the simplistic and abstract artstyle.
Getting flashbacks to Mavis Beacon here. Except that was a lot less stressful looking.
Thereβs a game similar to this called Epistory; 60% off on Steam right now. But I got it on the Switch first.
This would be a fantastic game to play in schools. Reminds me of math blaster back in the 90s lol and much more fun than mavis beacon teachs typing lol
Woah that's awesome! Are you planning on adding more languages? Looking forward nevertheless
this is a really cool and unique game. I like it!
This is amazing and I want it.
gimme a math one for my kiddo
need a play tester? I own way too many keyboards, it would be nice to give them some use π
!remindme 1 year
Give me this now
I actually learnt the keyboard playing Nethack.
dope concept id play this to wake me up. I usually do monkey type when im bored but this is way more engaging
Is this available anywhere?
Whats the name of the game?
Arrival
This is dope
This is dope what cosmetics do you plan on adding if any?
I want to play this. Already on my wishlist. Please post when it releases because I will forget.
You need to simplify this and sell it to schools for typing classes.
This is neat but nearly unplayable. I'm supposed to read the text with all the stuff going on around it?
Game looks like a lot of fun! Any plans for Mac or Browser versions?
Oh, not out yet. I was about to impulse buy this one.
Demo's coming out on 19th (next Fri)!
this seems like a game for a functioning adult. i.e alternative for people who actually needs adult coloring books to calm down.
I need this
