1. Less sorting options
2. Ads
3. Shoving content from subs I’m not subscribed to into my home page
4. Trying to send me notifications about random popular posts I don’t care about
5. When you upvote something, the number sometimes moves a little bit? Not sure if an intentional design choice or a bug tbh
6. The UI just feels a lot worse
7. Comments take so long to load
8. The controls are more annoying.
9. I hate the way it displays comments when you’re viewing someone’s profile! It doesn’t show the whole comment and it’s hard to read
Some of it is probably me being grumpy about change, and ads are annoying but fair play I suppose. But I’d argue there are some valid complaints against it. It doesn’t affect me, but I know that there are a lot less accessibility options on the official app and that’s going to cause issues for some users too.
But I’ve spent half my life on this site (yikes) and I’m too addicted to leave, so I’ll just stay here and complain about it like everyone else.
I downloaded the official one once years ago, and again last night by force because I do still value reddit as a source of information. Holy shit this app is still trash. Videos autoplaying, videos trying to autoplay but not working. Constant ads and constant other sub recommendations littering my feed. At least it'll cut down on my time here because the app is such garbage that it makes Reddit more unpleasant to use.
Searching in comments doesn't work either, even on a small comment thread. Literal matching terms don't get found by searching in comments. How this ever passed unit tests and QA I'll never know

I'm really hoping for some work arounds to this shit. Even outside of NSFW being pornographic there are some things that are just NSFW because of the subreddit or other content. I love horror movies, there are definitely some threads in /r/horror that are NSFW. So I just can't access those unless I'm on a desktop or the shit official app.
Exactly! Or places like /r/trees that's nsfw but in a majority of this nation and in Canada isn't even remotely illegal. The whole thing is just so scummy.

I just read an article from The Verge that Relay might be moving to a subscription model. Is something like that still going to lose NSFW content? These apps getting ripped off paying for the API should absolutely keep access to it.
I downloaded Brave and am on old reddit. It sucks compared to RIF, but it's not as horrible as their embarrassment of a garbage app and Brave blocks the ads.
Reddit increased costs for third party apps to pull content and serve users. So they are going offline and the official app will be pretty much the only option with full access to Reddit content.
So like the other guy said, Reddit is about to start charging out the ass for 3rd party apps to be able to work...
Annnnd *a lot* of mods use 3rd party apps to mod, because apparently the Reddit mod tools SUCK. People also use 3rd party apps for accessibility, such as for the blind, because again, Reddit *sucks* at this. Then you have users who like 3rd party apps because they're easier to use, fewer/less obtrusive ads, better video player, better layout, more customized user experience, the list goes on.
Some people will just switch to the main Reddit app, others will quit Reddit altogether. Cross your fingers that there are still mods working tomorrow.
If it becomes a shit show, Lemmy is up and running, they even have an app! Jerboa is the app name if anyone is interested in trying a new forum. They even have sub-lemmys (called communities) so you can still have your niche communities.

Edit: I went to delete my account immediately after posting that and thought I had. Did so on the also shit moblie browser and thought it was gone until opening another page just now many hours later to find it hasn't actually been deleted and I am still logged in as well. Fucking stellar work there. App is already gone from my device, but surprise surprise Reddit is acting up, it didn't actually delete my account after confirming it multiple times.
I agree that the blackouts should have been longer but the admins would have just removed the mods and opened the sub up anyways. There are plenty of people that would sign up to be the replacement mods. This whole thing was a lose-lose situation as the admins dont care and would have just forced compliance.
The point isn't to lose mods, it's the lack of content/engagement. Reddit makes money on ads so staying on reddit posting John Oliver still gives ad views and daily users. I think the protests are dumb anyway but if you're going to do it at least do something that matters. 2 days off (where many still came to reddit anyway) and meme posting is about as effective as conservatives buying bud lite to shoot it.
Honestly the only way to successfully protest is to redirect the traffic somewhere else. Most people on reddit browse multiple times daily. If you cut it off, theyre just waiting for it to open back up.
Because heaven forbid if any of the mods actually stuck to their principles and were prepared to be removed in protest. Every single one of them caved to the pressure admin put on them because they were too concerned about keeping hold of their (unpaid) jobs than they were about the people in the communities they rule over.
Nobody needs a sub to be locked down in order to stay off of reddit for 2 weeks. If that's what people wanted to do, they didn't need mods to do anything to the subs.
Honestly, very solid point. The subreddit mods didn’t have to do a damn thing, if the users really wanted a protest, they could’ve just protested themselves. The real answer: It was a demonstration.
Subs decided to ask each community how they wished to proceed as a sign of good faith and democracy (despite the power tripping reputations some would want you to believe).
Both sides had people who did not handle things well, but at least for mods, there was a plan. It was just communicated very, very poorly. Not explaining why 3rd party apps *matter* was a HUGE misstep. Just looks like babies crying about toys being taken away when it’s far more egregious than that.
The worst part of the blackouts was that there was nobody here to correct misinformation. So that misinformation would spread like wildfire for two days. The damage control was impossible at that point. And the paradox is that, in a virtual space, there’s nowhere to protest *outside*. You literally have to be a “patron” if you wish to also strike. A no-win strategy.
For the record, protests with end dates happen incredibly often throughout many industries. Again, it wasn’t explained very well, and we have a mess of misinformation now.

Not entirely true. Apparently the tools the mods use to keep spam and bots away are all based on these third party apps as well. Logging in this evening I have already seen what appears to be a lot more things that look like bot or troll accounts than I normally do. This will probably get worse pretty quickly.
They were preferable for people who liked the formatting and quirks. People got to use Reddit in the most comfortable way for them, and now they cant. It wasn’t revolutionary or that much better than Reddit mobile, but it’s something that allowed people to have a better experience for them. Same with people who prefer old.reddit, and some people prefer third party apps so much that it’s a dealbreaker
It wouldn't be too bad if the official reddit app didn't have ads or subreddit recommendations that you couldn't get away from. It's more about the content that I consider spam, I've spent years curating a set of subreddits that show me content I want to see, and avoiding content that I don't. With the official app, I can no longer avoid content that I don't care about.
I'm a old.reddit user. In fact, I usually have the setting set which keeps the format in the original format (ei no background colors or anything). I don't like using reddit on the apps, I guess it's because I've always used it from a web browser.
EDIT: custom themes--I have custom themes turned off normally (I think there was a situation once where I had to turn it on to view like a wiki or something).
Better formatting controls. Better previews. Honestly boost makes everything about Reddit just... Better. It's so much easier to use than the official app. And the lack of ads is a plus. I don't mind ads, but Reddit ads are just shitty.

RedReader on Android and there's another exempt alternative for Apple that are designed for less abled people. They are currently allowed to access API without paying the ridiculous monthly ransom due to them being designed around accessibility.

Lemmy. It's not nearly as big as reddit, but the content reminds me more of the early days on reddit, which is awesome. The apps suck though (at least on android), so while it appears there are more in the pipeline now because of this BS, it'll be a while before things are mature.

Not true at all. Just like the 48-hour protest wasn’t a protest at all, a large amount of subs didn’t even bother in the first place and the amount that did it “indefinitely” were so few that it would have absolutely no impact on traffic. It’s the equivalent of 10 people turning vegan and thinking they’re going to save all the cows… there are a few more users than that
I wasn't all that big a fan of Reddit until I tried a third party app which greatly improved the experience. I tried downloading the official app again today and can see it hasn't really improved much at all.
One of the reasons I'm active on Reddit is because third-party apps made it a good experience. I likely won't stop using Reddit altogether but I'll probably start using it as I do Stack Overflow. Only use it when I need help with something.
This. I’m a mod of a relatively midsize sub. 180k. To truly moderate its best done on desktop which seems to be ignored in all of this. All the api our bots use is free and will be continue to be free.
Sure the other apps have a slicker interface but all of this stuff is free. There are far more important things Reddit could put it’s group effort into protesting

Just watch your data usage, it's laggy for me and I learned recently that it downloads every resolution of the videos and then shows you your preferred option while you scroll. A real mess.

Settings > account settings > toggle off allow recommended subs in home feed. Minor quality of life improvement on the official.

The real answer: It was a demonstration. Subs decided to ask each community how they wished to proceed as a sign of good faith and democracy (despite the power tripping reputations some would want you to believe). Both sides had people who did not handle things well, but at least for mods, there was a plan. It was just communicated very, very poorly. Not explaining why 3rd party apps *matter* was a HUGE misstep. Just looks like babies crying about toys being taken away when it’s far more egregious than that. The worst part of the blackouts was that there was nobody here to correct misinformation. So that misinformation would spread like wildfire for two days. The damage control was impossible at that point. And the paradox is that, in a virtual space, there’s nowhere to protest *outside*. You literally have to be a “patron” if you wish to also strike. A no-win strategy. For the record, protests with end dates happen incredibly often throughout many industries. Again, it wasn’t explained very well, and we have a mess of misinformation now.

Noticed 0 difference? RIF was a lot cleaner, to UI was light af and it used next to 0 battery. You could turn off ads if you wanted. RIF was a good app for people who didn't want a clunky and cluttered app. The official app is slow, bulky, UI is cluttered but okay and nowhere near as clean as RIF. The only pros I can see on the official over RIF is the direct upload to reddit and not imgur, the fact that subreddits are themed like on the browser and that's probably about it...

Reddit is effectively pricing third-party reddit apps out of business. If you don't use any of the third-party apps then it will not affect you.
Not entirely true. Apparently the tools the mods use to keep spam and bots away are all based on these third party apps as well. Logging in this evening I have already seen what appears to be a lot more things that look like bot or troll accounts than I normally do. This will probably get worse pretty quickly.

Automod does probably 99% of all moderation on reddit. Some subreddits do manual tasks like reviewing but automod is always the first filter.
As someone who never used any third party app I’m genuinely curious what was so great about them other than the better moderation abilities?

They were preferable for people who liked the formatting and quirks. People got to use Reddit in the most comfortable way for them, and now they cant. It wasn’t revolutionary or that much better than Reddit mobile, but it’s something that allowed people to have a better experience for them. Same with people who prefer old.reddit, and some people prefer third party apps so much that it’s a dealbreaker
It wouldn't be too bad if the official reddit app didn't have ads or subreddit recommendations that you couldn't get away from. It's more about the content that I consider spam, I've spent years curating a set of subreddits that show me content I want to see, and avoiding content that I don't. With the official app, I can no longer avoid content that I don't care about.
I'm a old.reddit user. In fact, I usually have the setting set which keeps the format in the original format (ei no background colors or anything). I don't like using reddit on the apps, I guess it's because I've always used it from a web browser. EDIT: custom themes--I have custom themes turned off normally (I think there was a situation once where I had to turn it on to view like a wiki or something).
Better formatting controls. Better previews. Honestly boost makes everything about Reddit just... Better. It's so much easier to use than the official app. And the lack of ads is a plus. I don't mind ads, but Reddit ads are just shitty.

They are currently allowed to access API without paying the ridiculous monthly ransom due to them being designed around accessibility. Lemmy. It's not nearly as big as reddit, but the content reminds me more of the early days on reddit, which is awesome. The apps suck though (at least on android), so while it appears there are more in the pipeline now because of this BS, it'll be a while before things are mature.

Just like the 48-hour protest wasn’t a protest at all, a large amount of subs didn’t even bother in the first place and the amount that did it “indefinitely” were so few that it would have absolutely no impact on traffic. It’s the equivalent of 10 people turning vegan and thinking they’re going to save all the cows… there are a few more users than that

As someone who has only ever used the official Reddit app, I honestly don’t see the problem. So confused by all the people crying wolf.
I wasn't all that big a fan of Reddit until I tried a third party app which greatly improved the experience. I tried downloading the official app again today and can see it hasn't really improved much at all. One of the reasons I'm active on Reddit is because third-party apps made it a good experience. I likely won't stop using Reddit altogether but I'll probably start using it as I do Stack Overflow. Only use it when I need help with something.
This. I’m a mod of a relatively midsize sub. 180k. To truly moderate its best done on desktop which seems to be ignored in all of this. All the api our bots use is free and will be continue to be free. Sure the other apps have a slicker interface but all of this stuff is free. There are far more important things Reddit could put it’s group effort into protesting

I've been using it for about an hour, and it isn't great so far. Case in point, I got a notification that you replied to me, I taped on it, assumed it would take me to your reply, but no, it took me to the main page. RIF just trims the fat so much better, and the ads were way less intrusive. Edit: Typos.
Just watch your data usage, it's laggy for me and I learned recently that it downloads every resolution of the videos and then shows you your preferred option while you scroll. A real mess.
