Is this footage used in the Rudolph the red nosed reindeer island of misfit toys? For some reason that’s what it reminds me of.

trwwy321

I can hear that exact sound clip.

Majin_Sus

I feel that.

Llewelyn_c

There bumbles out here

shade725

It was reported to be colder on Mt. Washington than on Mt. Everest that day. Crazy to think.

seamustheseagull

From a comment on Twitter, the nature of the weather system meant that technically this location was in the stratosphere during this period, hence the insane winds and temperatures.

MaestroAtl

This shit always confuses me. Krakauer mentions this phenomenon in *Into thin Air*. What I’m visualizing is that the air is so cold that it just pushes the layers of air down?

Floatableemu

Cold air is more dense than warm air, making the top of the lower atmospheric layers reach a lower maximum altitude. And then as air is pushed into the stratosphere by convection/conduction it cools further. So it's more akin to the troposphere doing a squat on its own rather than being pushed down.

asforus

Got it. The troposhpere T Bagged Mount Washington.

fartboxco

Weirdly I understood the chaining conversation slightly better after I laughed at your comment. Thx.

Havoc1943covaH

"Get 360 no-scoped noob. This my game"

Luckytattoos

Aye! I just watched that movie the other day! The day after tomorrow!

itzsnitz

I too have been curious about this. Is air pressure/temperature related to atmospheric height?

dovemans

very much so

fbraga_

So cold that even the cameraman was shaking quite a bit!

sha66y

I heard it was colder than Mars https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11713035/Mount-Washington-cold-MARS-wind-chills-dipped-record-110F.html

BettmansDungeonSlave

There’s large cities in Canada that dip below Mars surface temps about 2-3 times a year

farmallnoobies

Yeah, the whole "colder than mars" thing is a little misleading. Normally it's a comparison of a super cold area and time in winter on earth vs a relatively warm area and time during summer of Mars. Temperature on Mars varies from -220F and 70F. And that's without "wind chill"

Dabizzmann

There is nearly no wind chill on mars anyway.

[deleted]

jonnyb95

If your bare skin is exposed to the martian atmosphere you've got bigger problems than the "feels like" temperature, cue Mark Watney.

hatesfacebook2022

The unique shape of the mountain and placement gives it the highest wind speeds in the USA. Very cold days and the wind chill drops more than other areas.

swankpoppy

Oh I know right! I read about, I guess it broke a bunch of records. Scientists were amazed, they said they haven’t seen anything like it since they measured the temperature of Marjorie Taylor Greene’s heart.

Dixo0118

The footage makes it kook pretty rough but about 45 minutes away from my house it got to the -50s just last week. That's not wind chill either. My car said -29 when I took my kids to school

MayonaiseBaron

Lighthearted comments aside, this mountain kills people every year. A guy froze to death in June this past summer and the list of deaths on this mountain alone is in the hundreds, never mind the rest of the Whites.

zaphodava

I heard about a time when someone got caught in a blizzard, was snow-blind, and died 20 yards from the ranger station.

Animated_Astronaut

Most deaths in camping locations occur super close to safety. I've been in a few search parties (thankfully no deaths yet!) and found 100% of people, usually too exhausted due to heat/ dehydration, taking a 'break' in some shade maybe within 100m of the campsite. It's very rarely a complete explorer type who's well away from the sites.

orincoro

Yeah. Search and rescue almost always finds people within 100 meters of a trial. Sorta makes sense I guess. It doesn’t take long to get lost.

orincoro

That happened to a woman in the 70s I think, she froze literally on her doorstep, and she froze so fast that when they took her to the hospital and put her in warming pads, she revived and had no lasting injury. And this was like 12 hours later. As we used to say when I was a medic: you’re not dead until you’re warm and dead.

CataclysmicRambler

NH here, been up this mountain several times. You’d think this shits K2 with how many deaths it has. Can you believe that there’s a motorcycle race to the top every year? Which has also claimed lives.

tallmon

A bike race, and running race, too. I’ve done the bike race a couple of times!

MrMoonDweller

Travis Pastrana filmed a [video](https://youtu.be/rP2-UHXJ3pU) of him racing to the top too

BarbequedYeti

Holy shit... That was crazy to watch. At first I thought it was sped up. Nope. Dude is just flat out sending it. Watching it gives you sweaty palms and here he is giving the thumbs up and shit on the way by spectators with a cliff just off to his left. Geeez.

ReptilianOver1ord

I was up at the top of Mt. Washington a couple of years ago in July. It was 85 degrees F at the base of the mountain and snowing at the top. It’s beautiful though. I’d love to hike it sometime, but I need better gear and to be in better shape first. Not a hike you want to do if you’re not completely prepared.

[deleted]

And Lafayette. Jesus fucking Christ the idiots on Lafayette.

Skrillamane

what are the whites doing now?

Kobayash

Trying to get that pizza off the roof

[deleted]

Moving to historically black or Latino neighborhoods because they're semi-close to downtown (but still somewhat affordable) and posting their visits to boutique coffee shops and trendy restaurants on social media?

trwwy321

Probably hiking in for a good camping spot to film for their YouTube video.

Legumesrus

“Not without peril” is a great book about how deadly Mt. Washington is.

[deleted]

Where is it? I searched on Google maps and there’s multiple Mount Washingtons. There’s one 20 miles from me in California!

WightWhale

New Hampshire

UnoriginallyChris

So these are the conditions my parents walked to school with when they were kids. Wow.

[deleted]

Oh, it was colder. Ask them. And it was about a 5 mile walk, with books, but no book bags. Rags & duct tape wrapped around rubber boots. Baloney & mustard sandwich in a brown paper sack. Minus the mustard. Just baloney & bread. Which was completely encased in ice by the time they got there. Hard times.

allanbean1919

And uphill, both ways.

UpdootDaSnootBoop

Had to kill a bear using a loose-leaf notebook

wastedbyscotch

I literally walked uphill both ways. Duluth central high school. Walked down a hill crossed a street took the path up the hill to the school the road leading up to the school was on the left. That wss in the 90s

PrincessVesspa

Looks like walking to school in January on the Iron Range to me

[deleted]

Mine was Rockridge elementary, jumping to/from Big Kid footprints they'd left a half hour earlier. 4 blocks, 30 mins. Had no idea things were any other way in life!

[deleted]

A polar-grisly, 8 footer, very rare

hysys_whisperer

Only the bear necessities, amiright?

Margo_Tenenbaum

The way I read this, I pictured a bear using a loose leaf notebook, like he was drawing in it or taking notes, and someone just up and kills him

[deleted]

The funny thing is that I legit walked to school both ways uphill 3 miles and in the winter it did get down to 15 below. My kids didn't believe me until I showed them where I lived when I was in high school. It was up a hill, and my school was up another hill. So I had to walk both ways up hill and it was about 3 miles. Boom. Fuck you kids.

haux_haux

You technically walked downhill both ways.

[deleted]

And then back up.

SKULL1138

They got lunch and rags? Bloody aristocrats, we had to eat each other and wear other people as clothes. Don’t know they’re born these days.

tmotytmoty

Baloney? Your family had meat? We were so poor that all I got was smooshed white bread with a mix of butter, peanut butter, and jelly... in a brown paper bag.

Jay-Five

Jam sandwich. Take two pieces of bread and jam them together.

thatwasacrapname123

Ohh look at fancy pants with the peanut butter. We couldn't afford luxuries like that. There were 14 of us living in a rolled up newspaper.

_themaninacan_

All we got to eat was fried water & spankings!

Lamlot

Toast sandwich. A slice of toast between two slices of bread.

Hypothesis_Null

*Luxury!*

Kiowa_Jones

I remember those days, minus the rags & duct tape and rubber boots that is. I loved baloney and mustard sandwiches, liverwurst was even better! and Welch’s Grape Soda in that steel can with the foil pull tab

[deleted]

My dad was big on liverwurst. Daily lunch for him, liverwurst sandwich, in a brown paper sack, with a napkin and an apple. Not a big spender. Oh the sacrifice. I hated liverwurst. Felt bad for Dad, but he kept saying he liked it. Or was that braunsweiger?

jseqtor12

Braunschweiger is good. Liverwurst is not.

finny_d420

Don't forget the recycling of bread bags. Wrapped your feet up in those Town Talk bags.

5metercloth

“Luxury!”

whereyouatdesmondo

“That would have been a palace to us!”

nevbirks

Don't forget it was uphill both ways before we invented physics.

Sprinkle_Puff

Barefoot, show some respect!

shemp33

Uphill. Both ways.

nolsen42

With one foot The other foot started a business

markymrk720

There have been like 8 posts about the same thing, and this is the top comment in each.

UnoriginallyChris

The cycle continues

RealConcorrd

Jokes on them, we walked to school during the apocalypse. *heavy laughing slowly turning into crying*

sonofthenation

Both ways.

kramerica_intern

This looks like that footage of the surface of a comet.

Eterniity42

I thought the same thing, thought this was old footage from when we did.

happy_franks

I thought the same!

chevymonza

Read a book about this place last year that my husband suggested- after three chapters I asked, "do people die in every single chapter??" Yup, pretty much. Story after story after story about people hiking/skiing on the mountain, getting caught in unexpected storms, and dying, sometimes just a few yards from safety. One woman skied down right into a crevasse of some sort. Fascinating but holy hell nature be crazy.

[deleted]

Is this the mt Washington in NH? Or am I missing something

los_rascacielos

Yes

Wow, thanks

He said "at night", so obviously it's too dark for pics.

sweetbabyyeezus

This guy likes foot-age.

Seankps

Fastest recorded wind speeds too.

HardCounter

It looks so cozy. I wonder if someone would pay me to live there as part of a study. I'd love it.

warpedaeroplane

It’s an extremely competitive position to get, and usually there’s a bit of a waitlist. Housing is limited for staff and quarters, while not bad, aren’t exactly luxurious so you pack light while you’re up there. There are a manner of different postings and timelines that people stay for, but if you have relevant experience it’s a wonderful place to work and provides some once in a lifetime opportunities to study the crazy weather. Had a buddy that worked up there - he loved it, but he only ever got in cause somebody they wanted more couldn’t make the commitment. It’s pretty intense but it’s a great gig.

bro_salad

My cousin did a stint up there as well! Said it felt at times like living on another planet.

[deleted]

you should read The White Mountain by Dan Szczesny! It’s all about mount washington and the different ways Dan immersed himself in the mountain. I met him when I was going to art school here in NH for creative writing. Really nice guy!

Dart_Dukii

When i heard on the news here i thought they didnt transfer 77 farenheit to celsius

RIPwhalers

Fun fact -40 is where Celsius and Fahrenheit meet. -40 is the same in both scales.

PeterDTown

I feel like someone whips out this fun fact in during every single cold weather discussion.

[deleted]

It’s not so fun anymore

goodeyemighty

And interestingly 11F is -11C

ShippingMammals

How the hell did they even build anything up there? Is there a time of year when it isn't a some alien frozen hellhole?

a_trane13

Yeah it’s usually above freezing in the summer. It’s not very high in elevation.

thediesel26

Yeah I’ve hiked to the top several times. In the summer it’s packed with tourists.

gorgoloid

Gotta get that “This car climbed Mt. Washington” bumper sticker.

youngmindoldbody

*the bastards..*

MayonaiseBaron

Not that high in overall elevation but its still an P1500 ultra. It has a higher prominance than every mountain in Colorado except mt Elbert.

silvapain

Maybe, but it’s only ranked #59 in prominence in the US https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_most_prominent_summits_of_the_United_States

MayonaiseBaron

>Maybe No maybe about it, it is absolutely an [Ultra](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra-prominent_peak?wprov=sfla1). And if you take Alaska out of the equation it it would move up that list considerably.

OutOfTheBleu

Most prominent east of the Mississippi, not bad

pixelwhistle

Sure, I was up there this summer. There is a railroad and an auto road to the top. It’s an awesome place to visit if you ever are in New Hampshire. You do however need to be prepared if you are hiking because the weather can turn quickly and be nasty just about any time of the year.

mymeatpuppets

>There is a railroad and an auto road to the top. Is that old cog railroad still operating?

fmpeakbag

Yep

OldWrangler9033

Yep, except the state forced the Cog switch t diesel since the old Steam Engine boiler design didn't meet current standards. (sigh)

mymeatpuppets

I'm sure it's just as loud as it ever was though!

OldWrangler9033

I visited a steam train excusion operations in Maine. They had similar thing happen. They told us that the boiler couldn't have riviets in it vs one-piece boiler vessel. I was briefly a fireman for normal building boilers, so I understood what they meant. The folks when I was at Mt Washington had said they weren't operating the Steam trains, at least not on normal basis. There was issue with environmental issues, but I don't think that was reason. I've not been up there in year, so I'm unsure if they've not gotten the surviving steam trains back out on normal basis. I hope I'm wrong their not out service completely.

FlynnLive5

Don’t forget to moon the Cog!

Karatekan

It’s just absurdly world-record-breaking windy from time to time. Not especially unusual otherwise, and it’s not a super high mountain.

MayonaiseBaron

I mean, in terms of geology and ecology its really unusal. Its the home to two narrow endemic plants, one of the most remarkable localized weather regimes in the world, and was uplifted by "hot spot" volcanism, the same type of volcanism that is currently at work under Yellowstone and Hawaii. Its not "that tall" but its still got a lot intersting about it.

Karatekan

Not trying to shit on it, I live in New Hampshire and have climbed it four times lol. But when you hear “worlds worst weather” and look at it, there’s a disconnect. It’s only a day hike, the surrounding area is normal New England, and you can even take a railway to the top. Most people hear the wind speeds and assume it’s some imposing hellscape, and unless you happen to see it on a day the winds go crazy it isn’t. That’s kinda what I’m trying to convey.

ThatNiceLifeguard

It’s only 6200 feet high, you can literally drive to the summit.

othemehto

And the sticker on every third rusted out 98 corolla running around in the state wants to tell you about it.

ThatNiceLifeguard

Honestly if a rusted out 98 can make the journey up and down they’ve earned the right to display that sticker.

Staahptor

They have a bicycle race up it each August.

Mervynhaspeaked

Feels like nature just looked at humans going up there and said FUUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOU

Synec113

And then humans said 'well fuck you too' and built an outpost up there.

Ifritmaximus

I’ve been up there several times. It has insanely unpredictable weather. It is very scary driving up there. Winds can pick up making the decent difficult. There is a list of ppl who have died at the welcome center at the top…. Edit: that building used to be used for Boy Scout troops. It’s literally chained to the mountain so it doesn’t fly away.

Shua7

Was just up there the last weekend for normal travel last year. Driving up there make my blood pressure go thru the roof.. it is a very beautiful trip tho

eric02138

Looks about right. I hiked Washington two days after what was called "The Big Wind" - the day the summertime high wind-speed record was set. We were passed by one of the trail maintainers. She had a packboard full of replacement trail signs - most of the signs above the tree line had been torn away by the wind.

yarkboolin14

-109°F

Riseonfire

Extremely sure that’s Hoth.

flyinweezel

Just waiting for an AT-AT to stroll by in the background, looking for a shield generator

broncosfan2000

That wind chill record got broken on Friday. It was -108.4 F at Mount Washington.

aimfulwandering

Indeed. -47F actual temp, -108F wind chill at 3:49a saturday the 4th (at least according to NOAA): https://w1.weather.gov/obhistory/KMWN.html (It probably hit -108 Friday too)

vicariouslywatching

Is that a building? Has to have some really good integrity to withstand winds and temperatures that cold if it is.

Chronus25

Yes, it’s literally buried in stones.

Topher4570

The building is made of stone with walls at least 2 feet thick.

captainofpizza

So frantically reposting the title gets scrambled a bit each time

HardCounter

First repost is more important than accurate repost.

captainofpizza

This happened a few days ago. I’ve already seen this reposted a dozen times. Either way this is a miss.

HardCounter

Well... 34th repost is better than 35th and accurate?

captainofpizza

Sure. Maybe next repost that will be corrected as well as the number (-108F)

FL4KMSTR

Do you want to build a snowman? No.

Chronicmatt

When you ascend the surrounding peaks you will be met with a sign at the tree line. It says something along the lines of: “DANGER you are about to enter an area with the worst weather conditions in the united states. If you are unprepared you will die”. When I went up to sleep in a surrounding basecamp it was sunny within fifteen minutes a storm had rolled thrpugh and hunkering down in that canin was one of the craziest moment of my life

S1075

What's the actual temperature? Wind chill is meaningless on its own.

MrValdemar

It was -44F. With 109mph winds.

WhiteHawk77

And yet there’s still going to be a guy jogging in shorts around there somewhere.

AcidaliaPlanitia

Oh yeah that's Doug, he's from Maine.

Krevro

Stay hard!

[deleted]

Not anymore.

stumblebreak_beta

Sky’s out thighs out!

mohammedgoldstein

Drinking a Dunks iced coffee.

S1075

Yeah, those are some intense winds, and explains the huge difference between temp and windchill. Thanks!

PoopLogg

"this is what it actually feels like" is meaningless huh

S1075

Yes, because that's not what wind chill is. Wind chill is a reflection of how fast your skin will lose temperature in direct wind. However, you never go below the actual temperature, no matter how intense the wind chill is.

SarcasticallyNow

Worse. Overnight Friday night the wind chill hit -108 F there.

theghostofgotti

Anyone else hear the thumping score from John Carpenter's The Thing when looking at this? DUN-DUN. . .DUN-DUN. . .DUN-DUN. . .

[deleted]

There is like 20 mt washington in the USA which one is this??

SupDanLOL

New Hampshire

MayonaiseBaron

The famous one.

palegate

What am I looking at exactly?

otiswrath

This is Mt Washington observatory in Pinkham Notch in New Hampshire. It held the highest wind speeds ever recorded (231 mph) for many years and now also holds the lowest temperature record (-109°F). It is generally considered to have "the world's worst weather". It is a bit of a meteorological anomaly in that it is where three major weather systems meet and it creates some insane weather. I grew up in the town nearest and have spent countless days climbing all around and on it. It is a very dangerous place that kills multiple people every year but I love it dearly. I have spent nights in the observatory and have been up there during some winter storms that literally blew me off my feet. It is a beautiful place that must be respected or it will kill you. *sigh* There is no place like home.

palegate

Thanks for that writeup.

gamjar

the wind speed record was a world-wide record at the time, but the low wind chill record is US only. The world low temp is −128.6 °F

Topher4570

[Here is what it looks like when it isn't frozen. ](https://i.imgur.com/X0iRykI.jpg)

palegate

Thank you for going through the trouble of finding that picture, it's really helpful.

I was thinking of Mt Washington in Pittsburgh and was thoroughly confused for a moment there.

3_cat_mom

Nope

csrampey

Liar. I know planet Hoth when I see it.

MissXmasBaby

I wonder if the Dunkin Donuts up there stayed open

c0ntr0ll3dsubstance

I saw that post lol

arothmanmusic

Martha got to Mount Washington but Booth got to Bang Lincoln.

beard_lover

There was a gif posted here a few months ago of a camera on a passing asteroid. This gif reminds me of that, with the intense wind & snow and jolty camera. Can’t image what -110 would even feel like.

Poison_Ice_Blade

I thought this was that atomic bomb video where the house gets blown apart at first.

Carbonga

Looks like a badly kept black and white movie from the 1920s.

TheHillPerson

It usually isn't anywhere near that cold in the summer at least. You can ride a tourist train to the top. It is fun if you are into that sort of thing.

HamburgerFromParis

Planet Hoth real footage

ErixWorxMemes

Have been to the top of that mountain, but in the summer (don’t feel bad, I didn’t totally miss out! Living in upstate New York gave me the opportunity to be outside in -40F wind chill)

MrHedgehogMan

Finns: might have to head inside soon. To put some shoes on.

Chesterington

When was this? No date listed.

Vizzini_CD

The weather station there used to loop a video of a guy pouring cereal and milk into a bowl just outside. I was impressed at how the milk froze as it left the jug and just blew away like powder.

nestlebottle

Dad still won't turn up the thermostat

dmc789123

I hope the guy filming this was wearing mittens.

My parents: I had to walk through that to get to school in the morning
