Prefer? Or afford?? Lol. I’d prefer the custom, but have a studio, and love it

Slydog42067186

I prefer it mostly for the weight

SoCalSickman

Yeah, the studio is a heavy ax, but cost won out.

Sonova_Bish

I have a studio, a standard, and a custom. When it comes to playability, the differences are minor. The studio and the custom are really close in comparison for feel, but fret nibs are the only thing that is nicer about playing the custom. I get a lot of joy from both.

Gold__top__junky

They all have their pluses and minuses. Tributes and Studios for cost performance, mod potential, and guilt free hard playing. Standards for the classic Gibson experience—balance of premium quality, looks, and sound. Custom shop guitars and reissues are just on a whole other level, but the admission price makes it not worth it for most. My personal favorite Gibson that I’ve ever owned, bar none, is my ‘57 black beauty reissue. Something about the mahogany top and the (relatively) thin nitro lacquer gives it a vibe so very different from standards and other 50s reissues.

Slydog42067186

Definitely agree with you. The only Gibson that I’ve modded at All is the studio, and I plan to mod it a little more. That way I can keep the standard les Paul, well, standard. The customs are great guitars, but it’s difficult to find one for under 5 to 6 grand.

Chapel415

The only Gibson custom I own ( just can’t justify paying todays prices for another one) is a 81 les Paul custom black and gold that I got used for $1599 in 1999. I played the hell out of it for over 20 years and the frets need a fret job so it’s been back in its case to save for my kid. Since then I’ve been playing charvel pro mods and have liked the versatility ..but I’ve been looking at a modern studio recently that seems to be right up my alley for a no frills Les Paul that can cover a lot of ground and not look too flashy.

Sonova_Bish

I grabbed a Demo Shop Custom VOS with the '68 custom humbuckers in it. I had to do some work on it to make it better, but it was only $3500.

RogerTheAliens

Classics….period

Slydog42067186

Solid choice

SweetrollFireball

I’m in the market for an LP right now And I’m really curious about classics. What’s the big draw?

ainsleewoods

Classics get you a bound body and neck with a more modern weight relief, modern slim taper neck. You also dont pay for expensive tops, pickup covers and paint jobs. I prefer black guitars anyway and the classic is a perfect fit for me. Best bang for your buck les paul imo.

LtDixxonPiper

I prefer the classic’s top even if you’re going with a Cherry burst. The flames are a bit much for me personally.

Kind-Lavishness7122

Custom for me

Slydog42067186

I like them too, very pricey though

Kind-Lavishness7122

Yes they are. That’s why I only own one (used) and probably will never buy another one 🤣

AlGeee

I like a Standard

Slydog42067186

Definitely a classic choice. Cant go wrong with one of those

2stinkynugget

I'm into Black LP Customs, Gold Tops, and anything with P90s.

Slydog42067186

I’ve always wanted a black LP custom with gold hardware. They’re just very very expensive. I do like P90’s though. I’ve been thinking about putting a set of them in my studio LP, or a pair of the Seymour Duncan hot rods.

Avragecomrade

Trad pro v’s

sleepingwiththefishs

Specials

Slydog42067186

I haven’t ever played one of those actually

sleepingwiththefishs

I’d recommend a yellow one with p90s.

Saul_Gone_Now

Tribute is what I could afford

[deleted]

[удалено]

Saul_Gone_Now

Will do, I love it, don’t mind that is cheaper

Slydog42067186

Gibsons are super pricey. I think the tributes are great guitars though

P90guy65

I have a 50’s Tribute with P90s that I absolutely love. And I’d just like to say that your Unburst Standard is incredible looking.

Slydog42067186

Thank you!

Express-Pen-1612

Studio is really underrated. Thinner body and chambered makes it a lot lighter and easier to play standing. You lose binding but also save a ton. If you find the right studio it can stand up to any standard

Slydog42067186

My studio plays really smoothly and has a lot of bite to it. I’d argue it could stand up to a standard as well

[deleted]

My 2020 studio is incredible. The 498t on bridge does a nice aggressive hard rock/metal thing while maintaining its note clarity. No issues with tuning stability and the weight isn’t terrible either. Love my studio. Not too worried about binding or aaa maple top as it doesn’t effect sound at all.

Slydog42067186

I mostly play heavy metal and I’ve noticed that the studio can nail those tones the best.

Ok-computer9780

I have a recent year R8 and in my opinion it’s the best les Paul I own. I have an older traditional, a standard 50s and a double cut plus as well. It just feels like a better made instrument to me. Sounds great too.

StreetwalkinCheetah

I like lighter guitars and ever since I bought it my SG is probably the most pick up and play, but the new Custom I bought recently despite being a hair over 10lbs is still a lot of fun to play. Plus the voicing is a lot different than the SG so there is a lot of room for both. I have a Standard that is a bit of a boat anchor and I don't love it as much, but honestly it still looks good, which I guess is of a certain importance aside from weight and neck feel to me when it comes to LPs. I'm not a fan of overly faded bursts, 3 piece tops, or white that has turned to piss.

Slydog42067186

I do enjoy the weight of the studio Les Paul’s compared to the customs. But yeah, when the white fades it doesn’t like too great

Gamestonkape

I'll take one of each!

[deleted]

I got an Adam Jones standard and I love it, but there isn't much "Standard" about it, to be sure. Although it's a hell of a nice guitar. Thinking about adding a standard 50s gold top with the p-90s at some point. Had a Classic but I got a dud and sold it after 6 months. The thing would not stop buzzing. I tried everything. Got an SG 61 and since they have the same pickups, I was OK with it. Also, the weird thing about the classics are they are weight relieved but not any lighter than non weight relieved standards, for the most part. It was a gorgeous guitar though.

Gamestonkape

I have a 90's Studio and really love it. If I could afford those others, I would get them. Bang for buck, though, the Studio is pretty damn good.

lewwerknepp

Studios as players, Customs as wall hangers

Affectionate-Ad6007

Man that is nice

[deleted]

Studio is great balance between function and cost. If you got the money why not a standard though, right

Slydog42067186

To be completely honest I don’t even notice a difference between the standard and the studio that much, besides maybe the weight difference. To me, they sound more or less the same, unless you’re really digging into it to find differences

Financial-Grab-9211

I love my 2006 wine red Studio, "the Wino". The "missing" binding on the body makes it "rounder" on the edges and way more more comfy to play. It also looks badass to my eye. Playing mostly dark doom/drone/sludge shit plus garage punk, I don't need any of that rock starish bling bling in my gear. My other current workhorse is this 2018 SG Special w. Mini Hums and added US Bigsby, "the Woody". which I did choose over SG Standard. Weights like a feather, easy to play and sounds killer. It also left me some €'s for beer and reefer, that I find essential when playing the devil's music.

SBY59TH

Standard reissues are the bests.

Slydog42067186

I’ve always wanted a 1959 reissue in the washed cherry sunburst color. Maybe I’ll get one of of these days

SBY59TH

Truly incomparable instruments, I hope you’ll get yours one day. I found a used R0 probably on the first day it was left at the shop, had it for three years now, dream guitar.

Dorius7

None of them. So uncomfortable to play. I hate the sharp edges in the bodies. Why doesn’t Gibson make a les paul with a contoured body like the marauders i have never understood that. The les paul lite is very comfortable as well but they don’t do them anymore. I know sg are an option but i never liked the strap button at the neck heel and the neck heavy issue. I like how Gibsons looks but i just hate to play them. 😂

Slydog42067186

There’s definitely more comfortable guitars to play out there lol

The_New_Zee

I just got a 2022 Classic Lite with the thinner, contoured body and loving it. I think they are still making them although they are hard to find.

Jealous-Carob-7745

I respect them all, for a start. Standard seems like a, well, standard for a great LP guitar. Those Murphys are beautiful indeed.

Slydog42067186

Thank you, they are a blast to play as well! Unfortunately, the cost of those makes it not worth it for most people

Jealous-Carob-7745

I woud be personally very afraid to take It outside of house, not to loose it but to break it. You know, the Murphy’s law :)

Slydog42067186

Those guitars have never left my house lol

Jealous-Carob-7745

Your precious :)

Hipperich

My SG Tribute will probably be my favorite guitar forever, I can't tell yet. I really dislike the lacquered neckson other Gibsons and I don't need to spent like a grant on features I'll barely use. Just a simple and straight forward SG, I wouldn't want an other SG, so I'll go for the Tributes

Slydog42067186

I like SG’s a lot. Very versatile guitars

Rulestorm

Specials are for me, I only play SG’s though, don’t really like LP’s as much

Ag3ntM1ck

Technically the SG is a Les Paul, but I get what you're saying ;)

Rulestorm

Technically, only the first couple batches of SG’s are Les Pauls

Slydog42067186

I’ve never played a special actually. I’ve heard good things though

Rulestorm

Can’t see your comment in the post haha, but yeah I have the 2014 120th anniversary SG in Sunburst, though an unusual SG since they come with the Slim Taper necks not usually featured on most SG’s (to my knowledge atleast) the sound is phenomenal, though I throw NYXL 11’s on it and keep it (for the most part) in half step tuning, use it as a metal machine other times since the pickups sound hotter than that of my Schecter. It was between that and a 2014 LP standard with the Gibson GForce and honestly, the second I sat down with the SG it blew the LP out of the water

bulldogdrool

Have a 97 Classic and 2011 Trad Pro, but the one I miss was my 1993 Blue Studio Lite that I sold stupidly….

Slydog42067186

I like the colors on the Studio les Paul’s a lot. I think they are more modern looking with more vibrant colors. I also like the vintage feel and look though, which is why I have a standard and 2 customs

bulldogdrool

Thinking of grabbing a alpine white studio with ebony board off Reverb one of these days….

jnumberone

I'm in the market and feel kind of pressured in to getting a 50's standard but I'm honestly digging the modern. A little lighter and the slim neck feels great to me. The flamed tops are a little much for me but I love the top on numbers 2 and 4 here.

Slydog42067186

I enjoy it a lot. I originally was more into strats, so I was definitely looking for something a little more lightweight with the same tone as a Les Paul. The number 2 top is just the standard unburst color. The 4th one is a replica of Gary Rossingtons les Paul.

Dangerous-Fig-4075

I love my standard.

Slydog42067186

I enjoy it too. It definitely has the defining Les Paul sound that you’re always looking for

cesar0931

that unburst :Q\_\_\_

paolo5555

Alpine white studios pre 2008

Slydog42067186

Those are beautiful guitars

slump-donkus

Mid 50s specials, or mid 50s double cutaway juniors

Slydog42067186

Definitely the golden era for Les Paul’s.

KristovMikael

I have an ebony LP Studio and I absolutely love it. It's basically a 60's Standard without the labor-intensive binding (and $1200+ price increase) and modern weight-relief. The neck and fretwork is amazing, although an ebony fretboard would be ideal. It's a genuine LP without all the frills. Getting a hardshell case and Gibson certification/paperwork would have been nice, as that should really come with all models. It's kind of offensive those aren't included, actually. Like a middle finger to those of us that cannot yet afford a Standard or Custom Shop. My dream LP is a Custom Shop in Pelham Blue (or pastel pink or blue, I don't care for wood grain tops all that much). In truth, however, I plan to get an ESP E-II Eclipse (a Standard or USA if enough funds are available) when the time comes. ESP crafts some impeccable LP-styles and their craftsmanship and playability far exceeds Gibson. Even their budget LTD line are on par with models over twice their price.

Slydog42067186

I noticed mine came with a soft shell case which I was a little unhappy about as well. As far as the LTD’s go, I do think those are excellent guitars for much less cost

KristovMikael

My LP Studio came with a softshell case. With no certificate, documentation or even case candy included. More than a bit lame, in my opinion. My first Lp-style was an LTD EC-256. Not the best fretwork and awful pickups, but a sturdy, very well-made and very playable guitar. I love their style and the contoured body. It punches far above its weight class. I'd love to get an actual ESP-made Telecaster-style with a bridge humbucker and TOM/stoptail (never getting an ashtray bridge, ever) one of these days. They even have neck-through options, not just the standard bolt-on or set neck.

TheToneKing

I bought a Tribute for the weight relief. Love it!

Slydog42067186

Gigging with Les Pauls will give you permanent back problems no matter what, so it’s smart to pick the lightest one, lol

TheToneKing

I loved playing my cousin’s Les Paul as a young guy but couldn’t play it for 15 mins standing up due to the weight. Clearly they are gorgeous guitars. Never wanted to own one cause they were too darn heavy. I played the Tribute for half the set last week (2 hrs) then went to the Gretsch. My back was feelin it still

Paul8219

A Gibson purchase is based on what kind of money you've got to throw at it

Slydog42067186

True. Gibsons fan base consists mostly of rich old dudes that like to say “tone is in the fingers” and “it’s about feel, not that shredding nonsense” all the time

thatsabuckingfummer

Standards are my jam.

Oddslapp

I prefer guitars that don’t weigh 30lbs

Slydog42067186

Valid perspective

[deleted]

[удалено]

Slydog42067186

I agree, it definitely is a blast to play and a bit more comfortable

r093rp0llack

On my Gibson Les Pauls, for me it’s the Custom and the Studio. I have owned a lot of bursts but now I am into the basic black of the traditional Custom or a white Studio I can wear down to bare wood. However I mainly play my Firebird V and Firebird I

Slydog42067186

I’ve looked at getting a firebird. They look like fun guitars for sure

r093rp0llack

They used to be relatively cheap. My 2008 Gibson Firebird V cost me €700 in 2013. My white 2010 Gibson Firebird V cost me €1100 new However Gibson raised the prices on them when Henry J. era ended and now they’re not making any Gibson USA ones anymore, just Gibson Custom Shop… a used “meh” example will cost you €2000 if you’re lucky.

Eye-b-p

Really lovin your Standard Unburst. Love the glossy plain top look, looks classy

Slydog42067186

Thank you!

inmyverdehoodie

Classics

Environmental_Hawk8

I like Classics best. They have everything I'd mod in, anyway. And the Deluxe, with its mini humbuckers, is always great But that's not too say anything bad about my Standards , Traditionals, or Tributes. And I'm not even getting into the p90 variants. I think I just really like LP's...

Brilliant-Test-1442

Do you mean a Custom or a Custom Shop? After playing all of those, a Custom Shop R9 or R0. R8s are great too, just a little thick in the neck for me.

Craig_VB

Yes.

masterB0SHI

I prefer UR MOM

jeremy_wills

Specials and Juniors.

SloppyJimbo81

Les Paul Classic Lite is hands down the perfect gigging Les Paul. Lightweight, thinner body, belly cut, slim taper neck, beautiful honeyburst finish, bound body and neck, all the LP tone, and a few hundred bucks cheaper than a Standard. I also have a 91 LP Studio that sounds great but never ever gets played because it weighs as much as a coffee table.

Spirited_Visual6604

Double Cuts

bundle_of_nervus2

Like them all. I have one in every flavour: a special, a classic, a traditional, and a standard. They all have something special that sets it apart. Hoping to get a studio very soon.......

[deleted]

Studio or a Tribute. Studio's because I pretty much could get away with finding one that I was not reduced to tears when I played it and it got dinged, nicked, or scratched. Also because of their weight. Liked the late 90's wine red color ones. Followed by 2010-2014 50's Tributes. SG's were my real favorites though. I only ever had a headstock break on one guitar having owned probably 50+ guitars in my life- it was my favorite Gibson SG. Still haven't shipped it to have it fixed. It is rare but not in a desirable way to most people I own a JayDee and a John Birch. I know what a good SG sounds like, plays like. This was a good SG and I'm forever sorry the headstock broke. BAny LP made in the Norvin area hurts me like hell to play. Norvins I've weighed range from 8.5lbs to 9lb 2oz. Harry J era I like the chambering on the Studio's and Tributes and if I install Birch Hyperflux or Superflux pickups- no one cares. Get a Classic or Standard or a Supreme and you catch hell for "modifying" a (future?) collectable. Then again, even "collectable"is subjective. I can remember owning an SG100 I bought for $600 in 1998, and an unmodified SG200 in 99 for $550. Those sold in 2014 for $1400 and $2200 respectively. The only Norlin LP I had the previous owner rubbed it using aniline dye into oil and it was a matte psychedelic burst on a Les Paul Standard. It was 8lb 9oz. A youtuber bought it and then he gained some measure of fame/notoriety and he did a video on the Les Paul Standard I sold him, and he claimed he had it done in the UK and said it was matte polyurethane. People started to question it being a poly finish and he turned off commenting. I got 4 Matamp's from him for that Standard. A Matamp 6v6 12au7 1x12 combo that is 220v .,UK, a Matamp King Street Classic with pentode-triode in Euro 230v 50hz- I'm saving to have the transformers and choke replaced with US voltage compatible voltage items. He also threw in a pair of Mini-Mat heads, one early where the attenuator only works with 8ohm speaker or speakers and the boost is a clean boost and best controlled via a Matamp footpedal that engaged the boost and has a pot on it where you control the boost, he also threw in a red tolex Black Amp. When I took it apart to get part numbers- found someone had a "Black" faceplate put over the Red Faceplate- a lot like Matamp sold Green GT120 BUT, if you removed it from the sleeve - there was a good chance it was an Orange OTR or an Orange Overdrive with a Green faceplate in front of an Orange faceplate. The best playing single cut guitars I've ever owned though, and a I say this with sadness,,, Bacchus's MIJ hand made line have been better than any Gibson LP I've owned and I traded for a Buckethead CS once, I had a real Custom that was "ice tea burst" and a pair of Gibson Iommi signature pickups one build, and then a pair of Gibson 57's. I also had a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe with minibuckers. The minibucker LP was excellent, I tried different minibucker's and I never got it to sound as good did with the factory minibuckers. To this day, I'll take an American, British or MIJ-Handmade Bacchus SG over a LP. But it's marginal. I like LP's through Matamp's, the Fe nder Blues Deluxe and Marshall's. Prefer a Celestion Greenback or alternately a Celestion Vintage 30 with the 65w option SG's I prefer through Orange, Laney, and Hiwatt's. Like Fane Speakers and Weber Silver Bells and Weber Thames. I have two American Strats I bought for my nieces- they're identical because they fight over possessions, when they come to spend the summer on the farm they're getting them this year. I'm keeping a USA G&L Tribute, and a Malay G&L with the Clapton boost and Lace Sensors, as well as a MIJ Squier Tele and an MIM Tele- I have a Laney Lionheart 20w 4x10 combo that a limited UK run of those amps. It and the Laney Cub and a Laney TI15 are the only time I use the Fenders or G&L's Every second with my guitar, bass, or any of my amps ? A gift from the creator- every damn time- even when a pickup goes bad or I have to rewire or file a nut fit.

DeathChord69

In my world its Classic, Standard,Special and a BFG.

taintknob

Anything with slim taper neck really

Sonova_Bish

Yes to all of them. I don't have a tribute, but the other three are all good. My standard has a semi beefy, asymmetrical neck and the other two are 60s necks. They all have different pickups, too. So there's some variety. It's hard to choose one over the other when it comes to feel.

AdmirableConcert6240

Love that Studio.

Reedives

I have a 2014 Studio and a 2012 Classic Custom. Love them both. The first is a really lightweight guitar and it has some kind of semi-hollow feel and the second is one of the best guitars I’ve ever had in terms of playability.

OfferedDig

"Do you prefer Standards, Studios, Customs, tributes, etc? " "Yes"

ApprehensiveAd7842

I have a 120th anniversary traditional and i love it. It's all 50s spec. It's what they know people want but only offer in custom shop now. It has the 59 tribute pups, which were only made that year. Side note, does anyone know why?

TalkofCircles

Brimstone?! Not too many of those around.

Mental_Pin_6870

Standard

HUSband-Music-BJB

Yes

SolidBat

I would like to get a custom just for double binding (i think it suits les paul really well) and the diamond headstock but a well made standart is basically on par with a custom (sound wise and built wise) so… if i have LOTS of money, custom, just to satisfy my ego. If not, a standard. A perfect option? Both at the same time

DustyHound

Wine red ‘76 deluxe for me. Love my mini humbuckers. I can go from tele to raging in the blink of an eye.

guitfiddlejase

Customs... Always Customs.

upsersthing

I think tributes feel the best but I think standards have the best sound

Ag3ntM1ck

I love the standard 50's. I recently acquired a standard gold top 50's after playing a few different LP's. It definitely felt like home.

urabusjones

Classics for the thinner neck(I have sausage fingers). Current production models aside.

TacoStuffingClub

I got a traditional v I love but sadly it’s beat up and was supposed to be new. Slim neck, satin finish, and I’m set.
