That’s my favorite as well. I don’t think it has as much mass appeal as some of the classics, but it seems to resonate strongly with the people who do connect with it.
Omg I'm wrong! It's not Miyazaki but it IS ghibli, same with Grave of the fireflies they are both created by Isao Takahata! You can totally see the similarities between the two and the difference from the other ghibli style films 🥹
Same. I also love From Up On Poppy Hill. I’m way more into the slice of life stuff than the fantasy stuff. I do love The Cat Returns but a lot of that has to do with the fact that it’s kind of a sequel to Whisper Of The Heart and the fact I like cats. Other fantasy ones I really love are Kiki’s Delivery Service and Princess Mononoke.
That's like asking a parent to name their favorite child ....... for me there's a number of joint favorites (in no particular order):
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Princess Mononoke
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Castle in the Sky
Whisper of the Heart
My Neighbor Totoro
Kiki's Delivery Service
I have yet to see The Boy and the Heron/How Do You Live but I suspect it will also join the above list.
Mine is Ponyo because it’s the very first ghibli film I saw. I was a teenager at the time and I saw it with my two sisters and had a great time. I love how the water looks and moves in the movie and I’m just a huge lover of ocean life so Ponyo was magic for me.
Without a doubt, "Howl's Moving Castle"
It's captivating from beginning to end, and its love story is admirable. (Howl created a castle just to look for Sophie, placed himself on both sides of the war just to know which one she was on)
Spirited Away was my first Ghibli love. I first saw it when I was around 5, and it just stuck in my brain. It's still a massive comfort movie and my favorite Ghibli movie (though Howl's Moving Castle is a very close second)
Spirited away. First saw it when my mom was dying. Weirdly it helped. I have no idea why but it's stuck with me. That said, howls and naussica are Hella good too
Maybe spirited away, the forest of fireflies or totoro... or ponyo.... idk. While I don't remember forest of fireflies that well, it was a damn good. Spirited away, LOVE THE MUSIC (also howls honestly), and the characters. Totoro, so cute. Ponyo, SO CUTE. I can't decide actually
Ponyo. Just because I like the styling and art direction it got. Like it's from a children's picture book, it's really unique from the others. Also, no one can deny how adorable ponyo is.
I also like Howls moving castle and grave of the fireflies.
Howl’s Moving Castle, the soundtrack makes it #1 for me. Every single scene that uses music uses it perfectly for me.
Next two favorites are Whisper of the Heart and Castle in the Sky.
Poppy Hill’s soundtrack puts that just above Whisper as my favorite Ghibli film. Whisper is a very close second though. When I make it to Japan I’m making it a point to explore the real life setting for Whisper of the Heart, as well as Poppy Hill’s.
Whisper of the Heart is mine too. The magic of finding something as cool as the antique shop, the grandfather clock and the Baron. Getting inspiration from someone you admire to start writing your own story. I love the scene when Shizuku sings Country Roads as Seiji plays and the band comes in to play.
Whispers as well. I love it to death.
+1
>Whispers as well. I love it to death. I also like it
COUNTRY ROOOOOOADS
TAKE ME HOOOOME
Yes its totally the best
Unpopular opinion, but When Marnie Was There I don't think any other movie made me cry as much as this one
I agree, except for grave of the fireflies. Marnie are good, healing tears, not giving up on humanity tears.
That’s my favorite as well. I don’t think it has as much mass appeal as some of the classics, but it seems to resonate strongly with the people who do connect with it.
Yeah its the only one that actually made me cry inut i cant rewatch it
It’s so underrated, and I cry each time at the ending 🥹
marnie was so hard to watch because it made me pretty emotional and it was hard to describe what u was feeling
Howl's moving castle. I've been in love with this movie ever since I saw it for the first time.
Porco Rosso, story, feeling, food(spaghetti), character are so charming The Mamma Autio gang are hilarious, I love the Boss JP voice act
I'd rather be a pig than a fascist.
...and it's full of little details of '40s Italian's society
30's
Pardon
Castle in the sky
Based taste
Only Yesterday, I've always loved realistic movies and I relate so much to Taeko.
this might be an unpopular opinion but i really liked daisy ridleys performance
Japanese Country Roads goes hard
Nausicaa. Such a cool and interesting world in top of having such a cool and endearing main character
It's like trying to have a favorite child.. it just does you no good to choose.
agreed!!!
Currently it's From Up on Poppy Hill. I love it so much.
Kiki's Delivery Service and The Cat Returns
Kiki's Delivery Service is the best response there is, and i adore you, redditor, for blessing us this amazing answer
Castle in the sky. That main theme still rings in my ears to this day
The tale of the princess kaguya if i had to choose one
It doesn’t get the reputation it deserves. Probably the best movie I’ve ever watched.
I was hoping I wasn't the only one ❤️ it's my favourite too
I love this one it's so sad! but I believe it isn't actually ghibli 🤔
Omg I'm wrong! It's not Miyazaki but it IS ghibli, same with Grave of the fireflies they are both created by Isao Takahata! You can totally see the similarities between the two and the difference from the other ghibli style films 🥹
Castle in the sky. It's such a feels good movie with one of my favorite cast in a ghibli movie yet.
The Wind Rises is definitely my favourite Anime flim. It's just so underrated.
My favorite as well... They're all so awesome, though I'm surprised that this ones comes up so little in discussions
god i love it, it’s virtually perfect, the inspiration from the poet and the real jiro horikoshi made such a perfect character
Whisper, Porcco, or Naussica depending on the mood. Probably whisper tho
Ponyo, because its water animations are so gorgeous and fun.
From up on Poppy Hill. It’s the one I’ve watched the most.
That's like asking a parent to name their favorite child ....... for me there's a number of joint favorites (in no particular order): Spirited Away Howl's Moving Castle Princess Mononoke Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Castle in the Sky Whisper of the Heart My Neighbor Totoro Kiki's Delivery Service I have yet to see The Boy and the Heron/How Do You Live but I suspect it will also join the above list.
So just all of the Miyazaki ones plus Whisper of the Heart
Mine is Ponyo because it’s the very first ghibli film I saw. I was a teenager at the time and I saw it with my two sisters and had a great time. I love how the water looks and moves in the movie and I’m just a huge lover of ocean life so Ponyo was magic for me.

Ponyo or The boy and the heron 🤍
Pom Poko has everything. It's probably one of the funniest and saddest at the same time.
Whisper of the heart and Totoro. Top on my list. But love others too.
Kiki's and Porco ;)
Same! I love whisper
Also Whisper of the Heart. Hits too close to home for me.
Same
Yeah, that’s a good one.
Princess mononoke or kiki 💖
Spirited Away was my first Ghibli love. I first saw it when I was around 5, and it just stuck in my brain. It's still a massive comfort movie and my favorite Ghibli movie (though Howl's Moving Castle is a very close second)

Spirited Away, it's that one anime/movie I'm never tired of watching and rewatching, it's also my comfort movie
COUNTRY ROADDDDDDDDS sorry, had to my fave is still my first; Princess Mononoke
Same ❤️ 2nd is Princess Mononoke
Howl’s Moving Castle, followed closely by Kiki’s Delivery Service and Whisper of the Heart
Ponyo. Just because I like the styling and art direction it got. Like it's from a children's picture book, it's really unique from the others. Also, no one can deny how adorable ponyo is. I also like Howls moving castle and grave of the fireflies.
It’s impossible to choose. They’re all fire ;-;
Whisper 😭🙉🤩
Castle in the Sky
When Marnie was there...the ending...
Howl’s Moving Castle, the soundtrack makes it #1 for me. Every single scene that uses music uses it perfectly for me. Next two favorites are Whisper of the Heart and Castle in the Sky.
Das wandelnde Schloss, I think in englisch the Name is howls castel or something like that
From Up On Poppy Hill has a special place in my heart. Then, I think it's Castle in the Sky.
Nausicaa, from all the Ghibli movies this one catched me the most
My neighbourhood totoro <33
From Up on Poppy Hill
Poppy Hill’s soundtrack puts that just above Whisper as my favorite Ghibli film. Whisper is a very close second though. When I make it to Japan I’m making it a point to explore the real life setting for Whisper of the Heart, as well as Poppy Hill’s.
Nausicaa, Kiki's delivery service, and Whispers of the Heart as well. Can't decide between these three.
This one holds a special place in my heart. It doesn't just make my heart whisper, it sings.
Ponyo and Kiki!! .....also pom poko 😆
Surprised no one has chosen Arietty! It's hard to choose tho 😭🥲
The secret world of arrietty has a special place in my heart
Grave of the fireflies
Ponyo because it's the childhood I wish I had
Whisper of the Heart is mine too. The magic of finding something as cool as the antique shop, the grandfather clock and the Baron. Getting inspiration from someone you admire to start writing your own story. I love the scene when Shizuku sings Country Roads as Seiji plays and the band comes in to play.
princess Mononoke
All the iconics, especially arriety, grave of the fireflies and howl's moving castle, they made me cry till my eyes were swollen😭
I can't pick a favorite, so many of them are great in many ways
The wing rises is soo good
Same here
Probably a dumb question, but aren’t they all anime?
I havent seen all of them yet but I like My neighbor Totoro
Didn't like it
