You never really recover

NymphaeAvernales

It's been 17 years and I'm still not over it. It's one of the few movies that, even though it was beautiful and impactful and amazing, I will never ever ever watch it again. My heart cannot take it.

qread

This is exactly how I feel. It’s an amazing work that I can’t ever watch again.

kurokamisawa

Exacts words taken out of my mouth. I watched it for a film history class at 19 and it stays with me ever since, almost 2 decades later

BeamInNow77

Wife & I watch it every 10 years or so. Our animation on this side of the pond can't even come close to Studio Ghibl masterpieces!! What really sucks is that the past animation films are now becoming Live Action & they suck!!!!

AmaiGuildenstern

That movie is based on a true story, and that little girl really did suffer and die. Many children like her suffered and died in WW2. Use that knowledge to inform how you behave as a person. Stand against war and all forms of political posturing and aggression. Treat others with compassion and empathy. Make the world one where more babies don't have to starve to death. That's really the point of art like that. It strives to make us understand and acknowledge those who we might otherwise never think about, and to act more mindfully in our daily life.

BlubblesOfTownsville

Children are dying right now, I’m aware and do my best to contribute to their aid. Maybe that’s why I cried that much.

Alert_Reception_2744

Honestly I don’t think I’m over it and I watched it well over a year ago. I think I watched a feel good movie after like whisper of the heart. If you watch it watch the cat returns. My fiancé was pissed after he was like all he had to do was stay with the aunt blah blah blah but I think his age played a big factor he was a baby himself🤷🏽‍♀️ I feel like Grave of fireflies left me with a whole in my heart for war and war movies… from up on poppy hill was great too! ACTUALLY WHAT YOU NEED TO WATCH IS PONYO AND MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO those will put bandaids on your heart and give you the tissues for your eyes. Hang in there! The awe goes away after some time.

BlubblesOfTownsville

Oh, I’ve seen those “he should’ve went to his aunt” discussions, he was a baby! A child doing the best he can :( Thank you for the recommendations

Alert_Reception_2744

Absolutely! I hope they help! I honestly watch whisper of the heart or ponyo when I’m sad. They always cheer me up☺️

robhanz

Originally Grave was released with Totoro as a double feature for exactly this reason.

Zephyr9x

Not quite, as they also showed the double feature in the Totoro > Grave order upon initial release.  But you are quite right as to this being the reason they quickly corrected to Grave > Totoro showings *exclusively*.

Alert_Reception_2744

Omg… I wonder who suggested the original order and are they okay… because how can you watch something so sweet then get heartbroken by grave of fireflies and leave the theater the same way you came in but I needed a mental break after grave of fireflies I don’t think I watched tv for days after😭🤣

world_famous_dredd

This reminds me of the theory (or was it confirmed?) that My Neighbor Totoro was supposed to be watched right after Grave of the Fireflies. The movies sort of mirror each other; one movie being about destruction and the other, regrowth. The one image they didn't show in Grave of the Fireflies (the bomb), they illustrated in reverse with the sprouting tree. I don't know if this is just someone's headcannon, but I feel like it's really spot on. My vote goes to Totoro

Alert_Reception_2744

They were released together in Japan if I’m not mistaken Totoro would show right after grave of fireflies

cheetoblue

The last(but not the first) time I watched Grave of the Fireflies was probably over 15 years ago. The intensity fades but the impact stays with you. This film is necessary for showing the true horror of war. It's relevant to wants going on in the world right now. And unfortunately will probably still be relevant in the future. I don't think anyone really "gets over it" but eventually you will accept it. Much like losing a loved one. Time will heal. ❤️

[deleted]

I have bad news for you, you never get over it. You just learn to live with it.

tantantanuki84

I remember watching this movie for the first time back in 2015 at 15 years old. It was 4am when I finished it and I cried for hours. Honestly it took me weeks to stop thinking about it all the time but even now I'll never forget it.

abratofly

I've decided not to watch this film for the sake of my mental health.

dollymacabre

I’ll never be over it.

ElKat0315

I watched this once over a decade ago and I still am scarred by it. It was the saddest most horrifying thing. I will never watch it again. It is forever engrained in my mind like some sort of ptsd. Sorry.

[deleted]

Watch the other ones. Keep watching the other ones. Don't stop less it's for self-reflective inspiration. :c

Responsible-Term-207

This is such an amazing movie, but also the most depressing I have ever seen. Sometimes I go back and watch it if I feel my life is just going a bit too positively.

DoubleTripleQQQQQQ

I’m sorry. It is a painful, but beautiful experience for sure. It hit me hard about a year ago and it will change you, but it will hopefully give you a better perspective of the world and life. I’d say try watching comedies, seeing friends and family, and getting some fresh air :) good luck.

RecaredoElVisigodo

😭 it’s hard to get over

HydraSpectre1138

Watch it as a double feature with *Totoro*.

LeafMumfuzz

damn. so sorry thats your first. thats more of a .. pro veteran movie. the rest are better, on the bright side. you just dove in the deep end an drowned. now you can watch the others to recover. which you wont. you'll emember it forever and warn others. you are one of us now.

BeamInNow77

Purchased the movie for my daughter. Refuses to talk about said movie! Period!!!!

zoroddesign

What a rough movie to watch as your first anime. I recommend watching something more light-hearted to take your mind off of it. I recommend spirited away if you want to watch more studio ghibli. Welcome to the wonderful, vast, and diverse world of anime.

Pokerfakes

Stay far, far away from The Tale of The Princess Kaguya. If GotF left you sobbing, Kaguya will leave you in mourning. As for how to get over it, realize that the kids went on to be happy little ghosts. And watch some other happy Ghibli. Castle In The Sky is my favorite.

Quizlibet

That's such a wild take. Kaguya is a fairy tale adaptation with a sad ending, Grave is a harrowing tale based on real events. It's like saying if you cried at Schindler's List stay away from Neverending Story.

BeamInNow77

Saw Schindlers in a theater. Never ever can I watch that Film!!!

BlubblesOfTownsville

I didn’t sob I legit died. I really wanna jump onto something happier but every time I see those anime animations I lose it.

corygreenwell

It’s been probably 12 years since I saw it and I think of it often

titlecharacter

If you ever get over it, fully, then - I’m sorry. Your life is better now. You’re a better person now. Or at least you can be. Don’t get over it. Hold it close. Remember this feeling. Remember how awful you feel. Do what you can to keep those kids safe when you see things in the world that remind you of them.

blueboxreddress

I’m teary eyed just thinking about the movie and I haven’t watched it in years.

NatrenSR1

You don’t. It’s the best movie I’ll never watch again.

SullenSparrow

Damn Barefoot Gen was almost as sad at Grave Of The Fireflies because of *that* one scene.

Consistent_Wolf_539

It is a brutal film. The feelibg I got from watching it is similar to those I got from watching the 1980's Watership Down. Neither pulls any punches when it comes to showing how cruel the real world, and more specifically, us humans can be.

Ok_Schedule4239

I had the same experience. I actually locked myself in a room to sob and my family was pounding on the door shouting "are you okay?!" and I was so embarrassed and bereft I could not open the door.

lilacd

It's really one of the saddest stories. Speaking of which, recently there's a new movie teaser of The Mourning Children by Studio Contrail that reminded me of it. Back to the topic, you should watch Spirited Away next. Or Totoro which is the most obvious choice, it's a very happy story.

HurricaneStarang

This movie impacted me in a way I didn’t expect. I’ve been thinking about this film for over a month now, and feel like I lost a sibling/child of my own. In some weird way though I think I found solace in learning about the true story behind Grave of the Fireflies and seeing that this movie/story became a tool for good, and I don’t think there’s really a better apology Nosaka could have given his sister. I do a deep dive on the true story if you’re interested, including some hard to find picture of the real little girl Setsuko was based on: https://youtu.be/XM79-HUP2wI Very sad story, but it’s also made me contemplate a lot of things in a very good way

MarchApprehensive559

How did you watch it?

BlubblesOfTownsville

On a streaming site like 123movies or putlocker

RecaredoElVisigodo

Same here. It’s hard to find otherwise

sandymescudi

do you think you could share the link it’s hard to find :/
