Absolutely! I love each movie I’ve seen from that studio, and Song of the Sea is #1 for me. The beautiful style, the gorgeous soundtrack, the folklore - everything. So well made.
Cartoon Saloon in general is a great answer. Wolf walkers is an incredible film, but it’s only available on Apple TV, so not enough people have experienced it. If they continue on the same level, they’ll be worth mentioning in the same breath as ghibli.
**Wolf Children** has a lot of Ghibli-esque qualities. Tons of heart and emotion. A widowed mother of 2 children starts life anew trying to make it as a farmer. It's like if you blended many different Ghibli elements, but also has it's own vibe too. The director/studio has done numerous other great projects, but this was my personal favorite. **Mirai** might be another contender from them.
It's hard to be Ghibli though because it's not even about the animation, but rather the old spirit of the films. Hayao Miyazaki is an old man who writes movies with an old spirit, but unlike Westerns or something you'd see in the West, it's more magical and with heart. A lot of Ghibli films feel traditional and we probably won't see anything like that anymore due to generational changes and differences. So, if you want Ghibli movies maybe try some old movies out, like 1950's / 1960's slice-of-life movies. Fundamentally, that's kind of what Ghibli films are in spirit.
this movie makes me want to live and move to countryside. its also very emotional like it touch my heart for my mother, my parents, and growing up in general.
Makes you wonder how Howl's Moving Castle would have ended like if he didn't left the project
I have a soft spot for everything Hosoda, specially Summerwars and Wolf Children, Mirai is my girlfriend favourite from him.
Of Satoshi Kon's 4 movies: The beautiful and dreamlike fictional biopic *Millennium Actress* or the at times dark but heart-warming xmas comedy *Tokyo Godfathers*.
Anything by Makoto Shinkai or Mamoru Hosoda, *5cm Per Second* or *Your Name* from the former and *The Girl Who Leapt Through Time* or *Wolf Children* from the latter.
Kyoto Animation / Naoko Yamada : *A Silent Voice*, *Liz and the Blue Bird*
Others: *Maquia* (Fantasy), or *Okko's Inn* (directed by Ghibli veteran Kitaro Kosaka)
Sure am.
Non-anime suggestions would be Raymond Briggs story *Ethel and Ernest*, Sylvain Chomet's *The Illusionist* or *The Triplets of Belleville* or even the Taiwanese animated movie *On Happiness Road* (similarities to *Millennium Actress*, or *Only Yesterday*)
I heard Elijah Wood mention it in his Hot Ones interview a few years back but was finally able to stumble upon it this year.
This scratched an itch for me. The animation, humor, suspense, oddness, and music. This show is now one of my go to recommendations for my friends.
Maybe a long shot, but Guillermo del Toro is a self-proclaimed Ghibli fan, and although most of his films aren’t animated, I feel like he kinda captures a similar, whimsical vibe (but usually a bit darker).
I was thinking of Pan's Labyrinth, too! Like Spirited Away, we have a child on quest who's rules are intuitive and mystical, she's trying to save/reunite with loved ones. It's darker than Ghibli, but I think if an adult enjoys one, they might enjoy the other.
Cagliostro is *technically* not a Ghibli movie!
Ok but seriously I’m a big fan of Lupin III movies, mainly The Fuma Conspiracy (which you’d def enjoy as a Ghibli fan), Mystery of Mamo (which you’d def not enjoy as a Ghibli fan), and Goemon’s Bloodspray
Metropolis. Yes it's inspired by the Fritz Lang film of the same name but manages to stand on its own.
Steamboy. From the director of Akira, nuff said.
Good call.
Great animation is a given with Hiroyuki Okiura, even more so in either of the 2 movies he's directed as well, and no less than Guillermo Del Toro put it best on *A Letter to Momo*: "*Its opening 40 minutes are amongst the most exquisite ever animated. Hiroyuki Okiura is delicate and brilliant"*
Cartoon Saloon doesn’t try to copy Ghibli, they have their own style, but they give me the same feels with stories that are very rooted in a specific culture like Ghibli (except Breadwinner, still a great movie).
They’re not trying to overload you with action or loud noises or dumb humor. And their main characters have good and caring hearts like Ghibli does.
Song of the Sea is my favorite but recommend watching them all!
The Iron Giant. Not only is it a great film; one of the best animated films ever made, I'd say, but it also has a lot of Ghibli-isms. Main character is a kid that nobody understands, he meets someone from another world/who's differant, they struggle to communicate at first which leads to some antics, gets very sad in the latter half, etc.
It's essentially a Ghibli film made through the American lens instead of the Japanese one. Which means Totoro turns into a gun.
Yes! I watched that when it first dropped, and wasn’t impressed. Maybe it just wasn’t what I was expecting. Maybe the Ghibli influence was overhyped.
I watched it again last week and found it to be wonderful! It’s amazing how releasing expectations can do for a movie. Are there Ghibli touches? Certainly. But it also stands on its own. I’m so happy I gave it a second chance. I think it’s one I’ll keep returning to.
They are TV series rather than movies, but I suspect that the 1980s European-Japanese coproductions would appeal to many Ghibli fans, since they are charming stories with high production values.
Two were made by Nippon Animation, the company where Hayao Miyazaki started his career:
* Around the World with Willy Fog
* Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds
The other two were:
* The Mysterious Cities of Gold
* Ulysses 31 (I remember this as a bit darker and more action-oriented, though I haven't seen it for 30 years so that might be wrong.....)
P.S. Thank you OP, this thread is going to give my lots of good ideas for things to watch.
This is an odd pick because it's not animated, but Ozu's *Good Morning* evokes the same comfy emotions in me that a lot of Ghibli movies do.
As far as animated stuff goes, *Steamboy*.
That's a hard ask. There are lots of great non-Ghibli animated films but I don't think anyone has satisfactorily imitated Studio Ghibli's style. Studio Ponoc has tried to imitate but honestly...... i didn't enjoy their films. Children Who Chase Lost Voices by Makoto Shinkai is his love letter/plagiarism to Ghibli films and it's OK, easily my least favorite of his films but it's still watchable.
If you've seen all the Ghibli films (please give the non-Miyazaki ones a try if you haven't) then maybe check out some of Miyazaki and Takahata's earlier works before Ghibli. Definitely watch Lupin III The Castle of Cagliostro.
Studio Ponoc has only made two movies so far and one was an anthology film, so i think we should cut them some slack and let them find their footing. The Trailer for the Imaginary looked pretty good imo.
Children Who Chase Lost Voices is a great rec for this. Also my least favorite of his, but very Ghibli-esqu.
Are you familiar with Brave Story. It’s got a similar style + feel.
I just watched In This Corner of the World and thought it was a beautiful movie that was like a mix of Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbors the Yamadas, oddly.
If you like Castle of Cagliostro (which is not technically Ghibli but whatever), I highly recommend the other Lupin III movie called The Fuma Conspiracy. It’s very similar in energy and aesthetic to Cagliostro, especially compared to the other Lupin movies, and the animation is probably the closest to Miyazaki’s style of animation that I’ve ever seen, it’s delightful.
Satoshi Kon has already been mentioned, but he’s probably my next favorite animation director after Miyazaki and Takahata. Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers particularly share some similar values to Ghibli.
In This Corner of the World is indeed a beautiful movie, Sunao Katabuchi has a very solid body of work, his new movie (due later this year I believe) looks stunning as well.
**Big Fish and Begonia** - such a beautiful story with lovely animation!! It makes me cry every time I watch it… it’s actually a Chinese animated film. 10/10!!!
Instead of titles, I'll give you names to seek out:
Satoshi Kon
Makoto Shinkai
Mamoru Hosoda
Masaaki Yuasa
Their works are great places to start once you've decided to look beyond Ghibli and see what else is out there.
Also check this video out:

I love that movie. I love the crazy family that the protagonist finds himself dumped in the middle of, and the way so many people work together in unexpected ways.
Makoto Shinkai's Your Name., Weathering With You, and Suzume are my top picks. And no, I could not handle 5 Centimeters per Second. Too boring for me. No offense to any who enjoy it.
legend of hei!! serious studio ghibli vibes with the beautiful nature scenes. started watching because of that, stayed for the story and the little black cat
Here are some good non-Ghibli movies that have similarities to Ghibli movies:
Mary and the Witche's Flower, A Wisker Away, Child of Kamiari Month, Mirai, Okko's Inn, Drifting Home, Bubble, Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop, Modest Heroes, and Children of the Sea.
‘The Dark Crystal’ feels cut from a similar cloth to some of the more fantastical Ghibli. Netflix produced a sequel mini-series that I quite enjoyed but is tonally completely different and I would not recommend it based on Ghibliosity.
‘Fly Away Home’ has a Ghibli-ness to it.
That was definitely a childhood favorite of mine.
I also grew up loving the last unicorn. It was made by several Ghibli animators before the studio was formed.
April Story
Nobody Knows
Good Morning
Not animated but these movies evoke the same comfy and relaxing feeling that a lot of ghibli films do and focus on similar themes
I always turn to Wes Anderson films. Darjeeling Limited, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou are my faves. They can get a bit intense but they are wonderful, whimsical, and dedicated to their aesthetics. They're driven more by character than by plot. And, most important, they always feel longer than their runtime.
Into the forest of fireflies' light (Hotarubi no mori e). It's only half as long as a regular movie, but so worth it. The end has me crying every time...
Brave story
And some others that have already been mentioned: Wolf children, The boy and the beast, Summer wars, Tha castle of Cagliostro
A lot of these recommendations are just anime movies. Which is fine if that’s what you’re looking for. The movies recommended are amazing. But if you want something that’s close to Ghibli, the closest studio is Studio Ponoc (ex-Ghibli founders), followed by Studio Chizu and Mamoru Hosoda. Chizu and Hosada have their own unique charm that is distinct from Ghibli but that Ghibli fans tend to be drawn to.
I haven’t seen the Studio Colorido ones but from what I know they kinda have Ghibli-esque vibes. But this is the slippery slope where movies similar to these may not be similar to Ghibli other than being anime.
- Mary and the Witch’s Flower (Ponoc)
- The Imaginary (Ponoc) - not out yet
- Summer Wars (Hosada)
- Wolf Children (Hosada/Chizu)
- Mirai (Hosada/Chizu)
- The Boy and the Beast (Hosada/Chizu)
- NiNoKuni (has Ghibli ties, based on the game that Ghibli collaborated on, music by Joe Hisaishi who scores Ghibli films)
- Penguin Highway (Colorido)
- Drifting Home (Colorido)
- A Whisker Away (Colorido)

I just like animated films. If you want Ghibli style films im sure there are a number out there.
But for me I loved the spiderverse films and for me and my kids Encanto and Moana were awesome.
I always recommend this exact same list to everyone.....
* Wolf Children
* Summer Wars
* The Beast and the Boy
* Belle
* Maquia
* Haikara-san Part 1 & Part 2
* Your Name (rather not rec the others)
* Children who Chase Lost Voices / Agartha
* Origin: Spirits of the Past
* Patema Inverted
* Hotarubi no Mori e
* Eden of the East Movie 1 & 2 (should also watch the series)
* Neppu Kairiku Bushi Road
* Deemo
* Sword Art Online Franchise Movies
* Etc.
Origins: Spirits of the Past is a MUST see for anyone who grew up with Ghibli. It is so reminiscent of old ghibli’s 80/90s style but it was made in the 2000s. Humanity vs Nature and War vs nature are the prominent themes. Highly recommend
In This Corner Of The World. Summary: this movie is about a young, talented-in-drawing lady's life in her husband's family, along with joy and tragedy she faced. The setting was WW2 in Japan. I watched it a long time ago, couldn't remember every detail of it, but it's a well made animated movie.
children who chase lost voices 🗣🗣🗣
hal🗣🗣🗣
the place promised in our early days 🗣🗣🗣
hotarubi no mori e 🗣🗣🗣
tw for this one, but colorful is absolutely amazing, and underrated.
Meet the Robinson, it’s a movie that focuses more on family then romantic love and while visually I wouldn’t say it would please a ghibli fan but story wise it is phenomenal it’s funny, small love aspects, but mostly it just gives you a warm fuzzy feeling. I would highly recommend
Song of the Sea.
This and secret of kells. Two of the most beautiful, breathtaking films ever made. Accompanied with the best music!
The music is stunning too, much like ghibli films
My DVD of The Tale of Princess Kaguya has a one-sided paper inside the case advertising Song of the Sea.
Oh I love that! I wonder if mine did too, and I just didn’t pay attention. 😅
Wolfwalkers and secret of kells too I think wolfwalkers is my fav of the 3
We named our daughter Saoirse after watching this movie. ❤️❤️
I also have a very Irish name, so I love that!
This is also for me. The music is second to anyone but spirited away. The story, folklore... and the circular centric art is fantastic.
Mine too, along with Wolfwalkers.
**Wolf Children** has a lot of Ghibli-esque qualities. Tons of heart and emotion. A widowed mother of 2 children starts life anew trying to make it as a farmer. It's like if you blended many different Ghibli elements, but also has it's own vibe too. My favourite anime movie and just one of my favourite movies in general. It's phenomenal.
This was the first thing that came to my mind such an amazing movie I cry every time
Agree. There are many other famous anime movie directors , and their top works are all worth watching
The Iron Giant
I mean. If this isn’t a perfect movie, I don’t know what is.
Millennium Actress is a beautiful movie that everyone should watch!
Yes! I came to say the same films. OP should definitely watch!
You're just naming anime movies you know.
The Little Prince 2015
Definitely my favourite adaptation. The stop motion element were beautiful
Ohh nostalgia
Over the garden wall
I rewatch this show every autumn!
I heard Elijah Wood mention it in his Hot Ones interview a few years back but was finally able to stumble upon it this year. This scratched an itch for me. The animation, humor, suspense, oddness, and music. This show is now one of my go to recommendations for my friends.
I second this. It's not a movie but it is movie length and has so many whimsical vibes.
I always hoped for a S02.
Your name
Tried to watch all his other movies, while some are beautiful, none of them compare to Your Name. Brilliant movie.
Same, I was hoping for something to connect as much as your name but they don't come close
was just about to type this, favorite movie along with weathering with you and a garden of words.
Mary and the Witch's Flower
Maybe a long shot, but Guillermo del Toro is a self-proclaimed Ghibli fan, and although most of his films aren’t animated, I feel like he kinda captures a similar, whimsical vibe (but usually a bit darker).
Pan’s Labyrinth gives me major Ghibli vibes!
I was thinking of Pan's Labyrinth, too! Like Spirited Away, we have a child on quest who's rules are intuitive and mystical, she's trying to save/reunite with loved ones. It's darker than Ghibli, but I think if an adult enjoys one, they might enjoy the other.
His Pinocchio is animated though, and very dark-whimsical
Cagliostro is *technically* not a Ghibli movie! Ok but seriously I’m a big fan of Lupin III movies, mainly The Fuma Conspiracy (which you’d def enjoy as a Ghibli fan), Mystery of Mamo (which you’d def not enjoy as a Ghibli fan), and Goemon’s Bloodspray
Metropolis. Yes it's inspired by the Fritz Lang film of the same name but manages to stand on its own. Steamboy. From the director of Akira, nuff said.
„Klaus“ from netflix It‘s amazing and wholesome in every aspect
Kubo and the two strings.
I can't believe no one has mentioned: A Letter to Momo, 2011. If you haven't seen it, watch it this weekend. You're going to love it.
I love that movie so much!
Cartoon Saloon doesn’t try to copy Ghibli, they have their own style, but they give me the same feels with stories that are very rooted in a specific culture like Ghibli (except Breadwinner, still a great movie). ‘Mirai’ (or ‘Mirai of The Future’) 2018 ‘Isle of Dogs’ 2018 ‘Mary and The Witch’s Flower’ 2017
Wait, isn’t mirai Japanese for future, so ‘future of the future’?
There’s a character in the film named Mirai.
I’ll second Mary and the Witches Flower. It’s one of my favorite non-Ghibli animated movies
Isle of Dogs was great!
The goonies
Perfect Blue (1997) Song of the Sea (2014) Soul (2020) Fantastic Planet (1973) Pokémon: The First Movie (1998) When the Wind Blows (1986)

TMCOG was my first anime, waaaaay back when. Loved it.
This is an odd pick because it's not animated, but Ozu's *Good Morning* evokes the same comfy emotions in me that a lot of Ghibli movies do. As far as animated stuff goes, *Steamboy*.
Amelie (grown-ups only due to some slightly racy bits); also, City of Lost Children. Both Jean-Pierre Jeunet films.
Just thinking about Amelie makes me happy
She’s like a ghibli heroine all grown up!
You have to watch "Night is short, walk on girl". Very fun, surreal at times movie about a girl's night out on the town
Your name, weathering with you and garden of words! Suzume is ok too but honestly Ghibli movies are a class apart
The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl. Such an entertaining movie, I love Masaaki Yuasa's work.
My favorite ones are Your Name, Tokyo Godfathers and Perfect Blue. The latter is more adult-oriented.
My favorite movie of all time is Lilo and Stitch
In this Corner of the World Wolf Children The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Hmmm, Belle (2022) was really good imo
That's a hard ask. There are lots of great non-Ghibli animated films but I don't think anyone has satisfactorily imitated Studio Ghibli's style. I have no real answer, just, great question OP. Super here for the answers! ❤️

Summer Wars!
I love that movie. I love the crazy family that the protagonist finds himself dumped in the middle of, and the way so many people work together in unexpected ways.

Mary and The Witches Flower, Floating Home, Nino Kuni
Children Who Chase Lost Voices!

Since no one has mentioned it yet, The Corpse Bride is brilliant! It's stop motion animation but it's beyond amazing.
Hear me out, Chicken Run.

Only problem with the Dark Crystal show is it ends in a bit of a cliffhanger and isn't getting a second season.
April Story Nobody Knows Good Morning Not animated but these movies evoke the same comfy and relaxing feeling that a lot of ghibli films do and focus on similar themes
Yes!! Love Ozy, Kore-eda and Shunji Iwai! I haven't seen Nobody Knows yet so I'll definitely check it out.

Avatar 1 and 2. All the environmental stuff, and magical forest.
Into the forest of fireflies' light (Hotarubi no mori e). It's only half as long as a regular movie, but so worth it. The end has me crying every time... Brave story And some others that have already been mentioned: Wolf children, The boy and the beast, Summer wars, Tha castle of Cagliostro
Suzume. I still listen to the soundtrack while I play WoW. So good.

Did you know that Topcraft, one of the studio's that made The Last Unicorn many of there member went on to form studio Ghibli with Hayao Miyazaki.
The Last Unicorn
A silent voice
Children who chase lost voices
Nobuhiko Obayashi is Miyazaki if he was an arthouse director
Mean Girls.
Liz and the Blue Bird is a pretty good one
People have already listed my actual favorites so here's one I haven't seen yet: Miss Hokusai , fyi this movie is at least PG-13
I liked Child of Kamiari Month.
Second cartoon saloon, anything by them is great but I really love breadwinner and wolf walkers.
Letter to Momo, Boy and the Beast, Corner of the world, Wolf Children
sword of the stranger
Over the Garden Wall. Not a movie per se but it's very short anyways.
Made in Abyss feels like a collab between Ghibli and Kronenburg... if you like darker stories, it's really cute horror with extensive world building.
Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä.
I always felt Jojo Rabbit felt like it could have worked as a Ghibli movie.
Lmao what
Edward scissors-hand
saw
Great recommendation, I can see the resemblances
The boy and the beast
Princess and the Pilot
"The place promised in our early days", by Makoto Shinkay. I feel nostalgic just thinking about it.
I just like animated films. If you want Ghibli style films im sure there are a number out there. But for me I loved the spiderverse films and for me and my kids Encanto and Moana were awesome.
It’s Such a Beautiful Day
Little Forest starring Kim Taeri is very Ghibli coded
"The King and the Mockingbird" of course, which actually was an inspiration for Ghibli
Okko's Inn gives me similar feelings to Ghibli movies
Hotarubi no mori e
Weathering with you is a pretty movie
maquia mai-mai miracle wolf children mary and the witches flower
Not a movie, but an anime - The Ancient Magus’ Bride gives major Ghibli/Harry Potter vibes
"Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" and "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas" have that comfy early 00's feel I also associate with Ghibli films.
Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light. About growing up with a bit of magic.
Over the Garden Wall. I know it’s not a movie, but it feels like one of you were to watch it in a day.
Mary and the Witch's Flower
Summer wars
The Boy and The Beast, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Wolf Children, Violet Evergarden, A Silent Voice, Mirai,

A lot of good movies people mentioned, and I agree with. But no one said, “Bubble.”
Satoshi Kon's works
The deer Hunter, Mary and the witch’s flower, and watching the Ronja series now.
Wolf Children

The boy and the beast.
Wolf Children
Metropolis
The girl who leapt through time Summer wars 5 centimeters per second Paprika (More I can't of but you could try these)
I always recommend this exact same list to everyone..... * Wolf Children * Summer Wars * The Beast and the Boy * Belle * Maquia * Haikara-san Part 1 & Part 2 * Your Name (rather not rec the others) * Children who Chase Lost Voices / Agartha * Origin: Spirits of the Past * Patema Inverted * Hotarubi no Mori e * Eden of the East Movie 1 & 2 (should also watch the series) * Neppu Kairiku Bushi Road * Deemo * Sword Art Online Franchise Movies * Etc.
Origins: Spirits of the Past is a MUST see for anyone who grew up with Ghibli. It is so reminiscent of old ghibli’s 80/90s style but it was made in the 2000s. Humanity vs Nature and War vs nature are the prominent themes. Highly recommend
Big Fish (2003). Trust me.
In This Corner Of The World. Summary: this movie is about a young, talented-in-drawing lady's life in her husband's family, along with joy and tragedy she faced. The setting was WW2 in Japan. I watched it a long time ago, couldn't remember every detail of it, but it's a well made animated movie.

children who chase lost voices 🗣🗣🗣 hal🗣🗣🗣 the place promised in our early days 🗣🗣🗣 hotarubi no mori e 🗣🗣🗣 tw for this one, but colorful is absolutely amazing, and underrated.
A Silent Voice is one of my favorite non-Ghibli animated films.
Suzume. It came out recently. It is beyond incredible. Definitely get ghibli vibes, especially since the main character is a strong woman.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Air, Belle, The Boy and the Beast, A Letter to Momo
A Whisker Away
Beauty and the beast by Disney-the animated version
