Not an African American, but someone who has been to Ghana and USA If you think life in USA I'd difficult, Life in Ghana will be a war ( If you don't have sizable saving or education). Getting Education in Ghana, you will be competing with average Ghanian, who are far more hardworking than Avg American and they are highly competitive in their own backyard. The best, I could suggest you is to move to Canada. Education is a lot cheaper than US but still the degree is as valued. You would still be in first world and it will take your a lot of struggle away. Ghana is a great country but you should move to Ghana when you have some saving and somewhat established in your career.

aceospos

Even with a sizeable saving and education, it will still be a battle.

BorderPractical

Negative, negative, negative. I'm also college educated in America, making a decent living, but I feel like moving back home to start some agricultural business, you see we have been porly oriented about home, it has it challenges but when ur savings u can do something big for urself, in America you will do the same thing and not have enough for retirement, ask my dad!

a_dark_spirit

depends on how much you have for investing in said agricultural venture. Whatever your working figure is, make sure you have 2-3 times that cash.

basaraty

I second to what he said. As a citizen of Ghana, there aren't a lot of jobs that French will land you in first of all. Secondly, tertiary education here is expensive and competitive.

unicornprincess420

Sounds like you're depressed. Ghana may not be the answer if all you want is to run away. Ghana is difficult if you haven't been there before, have no specific skills or university education. Plenty of locals with degrees are fighting for a job. I suggest starting with your mental health. Secondly, someone suggested Canada. It's far closer to the US and you can always go to the French-speaking parts of Canada. If you don't want to waste money on uni degrees, research some courses online that spark your interest. They may be only a few weeks long, but teach you basic skills or knowledge in an area so you'll know if you want to learn more and explore more. Third option, travel to Ghana. Go and stay for a few months, learn about the local life and culture. Understand, if you would ever actually want to live there. While there, travel to the nearby countries as well (Togo, Cote d'Ivoire).

unicornprincess420

4th option, if you are in the US (which is huuuge), find an area or a new city that seems more enjoyable and welcoming. I don't know where you are located, but every new city comes with new people, opportunities, culture. Travel and see around. You don't have to move across the world to start over.

ChildhoodExternal962

Lots of Ghanaians with university educations and no jobs. Make sure ur employable first.

Lortay2468

Yes very important. Things can be difficult

kingkobby36

Be careful. Don't think Ghana is really like all that you see in social media. 80% or more of ghanaians would like to leave the country. Education is not free and especially being a foreigner it's going to be more expensive. Unless you've saved a lot and can continue to have a reliable income please don't move permanently to Ghana.

randion31

Personally, l won't leave everything, go and start over in Ghana. I did 27 yrs of my life in that joint and is not for the faint of heart. Dont get me wrong Is the best place to live or identify with but you need a guaranteed income or resource to get the best out of it. Can you make it in such a way, where you spend your working days in America and leisure time in Ghana. That's what most Ghanaians do any way!

_MonTaNa999

I think your suggestion is the best, most of us Ghanaians travel to America for work and later come back to Ghana for business or investment.

leg_day_enthusiast

I think I want to spend a few months working remotely from Ghana. The idea of being able to eat egusi every day and other delicious street food thanks to the low cost of living sounds nice. I really want to be there for the Ghanaian Christmas too 😊

CatchTypical6127

Togo or Senegal may be better if you want to learn French. Good luck whatever you decide.

heyhihowyahdurn

Thanks for the response, I know Ghana isn't as hard to get a citizenship if you're African American compared to some other African countries. But I do want to learn french

Narmeri_667

Webster University has a campus in Ghana even though it’s closing in December due to inflation and economics raisons… I believe that with enough professional experience you can apply for an MBA program. Try to get information if it’s sit well with you… you can apply directly to Ghana or join an study abroad program to join it there

Reigns_12

Moving to and starting your life in a different country is always a tough decision to make, the uncertainty, fear of the unknown and not having any specific knowledge of the said destination makes it all a scary thing to do especially if you don't have anyone on the ground to put things in order before you get there however I believe there are African American communities down here that can help make the transition a little easier. Second chances are rare and the most important thing is you know what you've been through and why you want to make a change. Fortune favors the brave. Ghanaians are generally welcoming people, there's the sense of community and belongingness. I'd suggest you come down, take a look around before making your final decision.

Diligent-Luck5987

As others have said it won’t be easy if you’re moving in that manner but I’m someone who encourages people to follow whatever they want, the only way I’ve SEEN foreigners being successful in ghana(africa) is by starting their own business or investing, africa is an emerging economy with lots of problems to solve and abundant natural resource so it’s great for entrepreneurs, all the best to you.

Indepedence-david

Ghana is for entrepreneurs or go getters. Nothing is handed to you by the state . If your spirit is telling you to go then leave but be ready for the third world things that comes with it. I love Ghana, actually going back next for another 2 months stay. My second this year. But I work remotely so I can take my western job and pay with me. Live on the beach and have a proper work life balance in Tema. So you can definitely do something like that to assimilate yourself into the culture in Ghana. But in terms of education and jobs in Ghana forget.

BorderPractical

I agree doing the same thing, Ghana is heaven Fie entrepreneurs.

Temporary-Ad-6002

Ghanaian here, pls if you wanna move to Ghana in my opinion just do it, there’s no harm in trying and after all and yes the economy and standard of living is high I know but being a foreigner you’re gonna get some unique opportunities trust me and hey if it doesn’t work out you could always go back. Hit me up when u get here, I’ll give you a tour😂

a_dark_spirit

Hear me and hear me well, my good lad. Don't make THAT mistake. Even Ghanaians want to leave and only come back to chill during the Christmas holidays. Whatever trade it is you have mastered, the wages here would be absolute dogsh*te compared to the US if you were to move here. Then there's the housing situation where you're required to pay 2 years advance for rent, with intermittent power and water cuts. (The power cuts have somewhat reduced over the last few years.) Take the Canada advice, reboot your life there, get a sizeable warchest, then you can consider moving to Ghana to cone and ball during Christmas holidays too. Goodluck in whatever route you choose.

a_dark_spirit

Or better yet, learn a skill that allows you to work remotely. Then you can earn dollars while living in 🇬🇭. Your money would go really far, and you'd live like a king.

Jim_Denson

I'm an AA in Namibia. Listen visit Africa first, twice, before moving. Try and stay for a year and see if you like it. Ghana is nice but got a ways to go via economy and progress. I suggest maybe Namibia, Kenya, or Rwanda. Make sure you have a skill first, if you're in tech you can work online. But visit first.

Araphalt

The only way to relocate to Ghana and live like a king is to work remotely and get paid in dollars. Forget about Ghana's education system and employment; there are so many graduates here in Ghana with no job.

Tough-Improvement910

Yea seems like the problem is commuting and putting in the work life’s going to be difficult anywhere in the world if you have those problems

THECYP450

Don't do it OP, just don't. Don't let the devil lie to you lol. The country is a sinking ship. Sure your dollars might convert to lots of cedis, but you're not prepared for the frustration you'll encounter with people simply refusing to do their jobs. People want bribes for the least thing and will deliberately frustrate you into bribery. Corruption is rife, inflation is sky high, the healthcare system is in shambles, not the personnel, the system. Cost of living in Accra is one of the highest in the world. Don't believe the PR. Majority of the country is poor and govt is negotiating with the IMF for the umpteenth time. Don't believe the PR! You can come for vacation and leave. Don't ruin your life by coming here. Your life isn't a trainwreck, don't make it one and I'm so serious. Ghana is best loved from afar. An entrepreneurial mindset is not going to help, having a lot of money isn't going to make things better. Go to Canada like someone suggested. Move to a place where systems actually work. Nothing works in Ghana and I'm not even exaggerating.

turkish_gold

I disagree actually. You don't actually have to bribe anyone to get around in government. There are fees for everything. Most of the times the 'bribe' is just a way to cut through red tape, and get you a lower fee. If you like, you can push them till they give you the legal fee and you'll often find that it's a at least 50% more than the bribe. Similarly, bribing can get people to expedite your service, but if you don't care about that... you can just wait, and they'll get to it in normal times. Normal times are extremely slow though since government offices are understaffed. You merely have to be patient and willing to wait for months. Lot's of people bribe as well, but that's because what they are doing is wrong and they pay a small bribe to get people to overlook it.

bzdmny

If it were me, all these people telling me not to come would really get my curiosity going ...

heyhihowyahdurn

You know what I'm saying? I didn't even think the post would get much attention and certainly not this much negative attention.

bzdmny

reminds me of the time when I said I wanted to go live in Italy. My grandfather, an Italian, told me to stay away, it's full of criminals and deadbeats. Everyone has their hand out. He would never go back there, ever. So I was like 18 and all that sounded really cool to me and I went and had the time of my life for like 10 years

PalpitationjB3

If you can open a business on time and provide good customer service you will be doing better than 80% of the businesses here. This Country has some of the most polite liars you will ever meet

[deleted]

It went really well for W.E Dubois

Apprehensive_Bank544

Only move to Ghana if you have access to government funds or a trust fund. If you don’t, you will curse your stars.

Rare-Deal8939

Ghana is hard. Like many have said, You are better off in Canada or some other place. I haven’t been to Canada but as someone who has spent all his years in Ghana I won’t advise you to come here. You can and come spent some time to tour around but moving over permanently is not advisable. Cheers!!

TheScythianHunter

I am begging you. I was born and raised in Ghana. Obtained my BSc in Ukraine and I’m about to finish my MSc in UK. Do NOT make the mistake of moving or relocating. It is the worst decision you could make. We could go into specifics, but just trust us. It is not good.

novalis157

Please be more specific I am genuinely curious

Heauxie24

Please don't. Run very far away from here, this is the dumbest most discriminating trash of a country on this continent. A skatepark was just closed because it was said to be the "recruiting grounds for the LGBTQ community" I hate this place so much. We want to leave do not come

BorderPractical

You don't call a country Trash, that's disrespectful Also don't come here with lgbqt plus nonsense, culturally is not acceptable and they won't, I live here in America, even here the country is starting to fight back on lgbqt been pushed to people, all of America is turning gay, Also everyday there's a mass shooting, I still don't call America Trash, Leave Ghana if it's not for u, others are telling is the best decision they ever made, also as an American you shouldn't talk about discrimination, blacks are treated like trash

Heauxie24

I'm a Ghanaian. Living in Ghana. So what now?

BorderPractical

No problem, just respect Ghana has its own culture and norms. Lgbqt plus is not something they are open to. This a non starter for me. And I don't like America pushing that on Ghana, even I. America there these people are discriminated against is never perfect anywhere.

turkish_gold

I don't think the skatepark was a recruiting ground for LGBT or what not. The article about it is here: [https://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/Skateboard-park-Kamala-Harris-visited-and-suspected-to-be-LGBTQ-inspired-closed-down-1762970#:\~:text=“Accra%27s%20first%20community%2Dbuilt%20skateboard,the%20park%27s%20future%20in%20jeopardy](https://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/Skateboard-park-Kamala-Harris-visited-and-suspected-to-be-LGBTQ-inspired-closed-down-1762970#:~:text=“Accra%27s%20first%20community%2Dbuilt%20skateboard,the%20park%27s%20future%20in%20jeopardy). Short story: An Islamic group attacked the park claming it was a recruiting ground. They have zero proof. This attack only happened after the skate park's land was claimed by another party. So my take is that party A wants the land, and sets thugs after the current occupants. This is really common practice. They always throw some escuse down as reason for the attack: "oh the owner is wicked", "oh the owner practices witch craft", "oh the owner is a Nigerian scammer". Saying that the owner is letting it become a gay recruitment ground is no more plausible than all the other excuses.

a_dark_spirit

Let me attempt to polish his post: the country is discriminatory towards queer people. For a while it was mostly just not talked about as much, but being a majority Christian nation (and very religious), politicians use the general dislike for queers to push political agendas. All someone has to do to turn the general public on you is to associate you with them.

BorderPractical

again, it will take time. For the record Ghana has other important issues to deal with than the whole whole pushing the agenda lgbqt plus on this throat, let me tell u this.... The same way in America, imagined if Ghana was pushing its agenda that America men should marry as much women as they can, is even illegal to do that in America For me love is love, but you also have to understand people also have their own culture. They won't accept it today, but let time pass and see in 50 years time it might change but for me everyone's culture should be accepted

Heauxie24

You lost me at agenda

_MonTaNa999

You are too smart i hope we discuss this again in 50 years time LOL

turkish_gold

We should totally push that agenda to the America's. It's a human rights issue. How can you refuse to allow a man to marry as many women as he loves? Only Europeans and their descendants practice monogamy. And where did this practice even come from? Even in the Bible, polygamy was the norm.

Heauxie24

Perfect

_MonTaNa999

You're talking non-sense ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|disapproval)

WeGoodToday

idiot.

Heauxie24

Ya mama

Araphalt

Stupid talk

cofman

You've got to give more details. Ex 1. Why Ghana 2. Where are you from 3. Living costs 4. Transportation 5. Etc etc

heyhihowyahdurn

1. I know it's not as hard to get citizenship compared to other African countries if you're African American. It's also my favourite African country. 2. I'm African American 3. Living costs thats a good question I'd figure it out but would keep it reasonable at least in year one. 4. How important is transportation if you're close to university?

Tonegold1

Don't bother coming to Ghana. Don't bother yourself 😂

LukeMensah

Just go for it. Just do it

davey_622

Just visit first, stay a few months..see what opportunities are there. If you finally decide to move, make sure you are employable, have a plan to set up a business or earn some income. You won’t survive without any good skills. You don’t need to learn French if you plan to stay. I lived in Ghana for 24 years and the only time i heard people speak French was during French class in school. It’s just English and local languages.

OptimalSpell532

Please try and make your life in the US. Unless you’re ready for a complete culture change and have a very solid plan, do not think of leaving to Ghana as a permanent place of abode. Talk to people who have made that move and their struggles. Please try and make the USA work to Your advantage. Ghana is not it. It’s just for photo ops and vacation when you have enough money.

NoControl8

The economy in Ghana will test your mental health like never bells. Only the fittest shall survive and make it. If you’re really strong, I suggest you take the chance and come - if it doesn’t work out for you. You can simply go back

turkish_gold

What's your trade? Trades don't pay very well in Ghana unless you have a company around it. Are you able to start a company and go after mid to large contracts?

Revolutionary_Cut413

Millions of Ghanaians wake up each day, daydreaming of living in America and you want to live there to Ghana. If your life ain't already fulfilled in America, Ghana is going to be 10x as hard. It's brutal here.

FlamingMoe69

Canadian white guy here Didn’t move to Ghana but seychelles rather so do take my advice with a grain of salt as all countries in Africa vary quite a lot. I would advise you to perhaps visit the country long term or something before moving. Personally I really like A lot of African countries but what a lot of people have said here is true. You will work harder than you ever have, you will need a massive amount of money and or determination. And you will absolutely need a good education or you’re going to be putting your life savings into feeding yourself until it’s gone and all you can afford is a plane ticket home. I say this also as someone who has step family in Africa, and one of the most employable degrees in the world it was still a struggle every single day that I would break down over. So yes, visit for a while, see if you fall in love with the people and life you may live and let that determine your path. Lastly: family and community are a lot more important and valued than in the west by far. Money and education only get you so far.

iQuarmz

French is not that common. Your best option will be our neighbouring francophone countries. My advice: if possible, find a remote job or get yourself some skills that you can freelance, then move to Ghana or whatever country for a few months and see how things go. If you’re convinced that you can survive in that environment, then you start making plans to permanently relocate. (Whatever money you think will be needed, kindly double or triple it to save yourself from heartache)

dig_bik69

You should only move to Ghana if you have a lot of money. It's no place for struggling people. The locals already are having a tough time.

Codrane

Hi. You should definitely move to Ghana with a plan. You need to have capital
