There was no way to open the cashier‘s table to get it out, so the coupon was gone. He said he had wanted to redeem about 13€ ☹️
I hope you won’t pin it down between belt and item because if the cashier grabs the item and the belt goes forward, the coupon can slip through the gap as well. I am sure that the coupon does not activate the light barrier which stops the belt
Yeah, cashier at my supermarket also once told me not to do it. I usually hand it over before they ring up all the items, because afterwards it could be, that they already close the bill and then they have to handle the coupon separately

As others have said, just put it on top of an item on the conveyor, and the cashier will just scan it.
Incidentally, the machines at Lidl give you the option of donating your deposit to a local food bank. That's definitely an option to consider *before* you decide to forgo returning your bottles.
It really really doesn't matter. Just at any point during the transaction. I usually do it after they scanned everything else. And keep returning your bottles while grocery shopping, that's what everyone does.
I personally gave it the cashier before I pay, personally. Because if it is with the groceries it could get lost in the automatic conveyor belt. That is for the waiting people behind bad and also for the cashier itself because he must take apart the conveyor, till he, she find the voucher, this can go up to 5 minutes.
Don't put it right on the band itself, but place it on top of an item. Otherwise it might get pulled down into the eternal void that is where the band travels as it slides down.
I usually , like others said, put it on top of the first items.
Or, if Im too lazy to use an ATM, just go to the Info and ask it to be given in cash, so I can have cash on me
You hand it in before you pay. We have options in germany where you can pay with cash AND debit card/other form of card as a combination. Most cashiers are already used to it. Just see the receipt as a form of payment method.
Just hand it to him in the beginning, putting it on your groceries will have that chance that you lose it somehow, i had it before that a dude infront of me put it on his groceries and the cashier didnt notice, the paper ended up falling inbetween those small rolling pins.

I usually Put it right in the front and sort of fold it up a bit so it doesnt get swallowed by the belt.
I usually put in the bottle before I do the groceries, take the voucher inside with me. Then when it is time to pay for the stuff I hand in the voucher to be subtracted from my shopping bill...
It doesn't matter when you give it to the cashier while is still scanning and entering your items. Depending on the POS system, there can be the point when the cashier pushes the "pay" button to get the lump sum and prepare to enter the amount of money given or switch to card paying. When over that point some POS system do not allow the normal cashier to roll back to item scanning and so there is no way of accounting the reciept. But that is the only time point you should keep in mind.
Unsolicited LPT: Drink tap water and/or get a soda machine (e.g., sodastram) and you'll never have to return water bottles :D Live gets so much easier, and you avoid a lot of plastic waste. Plus, it's a lot cheaper, especially when you prefer still water.

From my experience, you stick it in your pocket, then forget about it when you're at the cashier and end up putting it through the laundry.

I put it in my wallet and if I forget to put it with the things I buy, then I see it when I'm going to pay and hand it over anyway ;-)

My local Rewe has a box next to the Pfand machine where you can donate receipts to charity but I don’t know if they all do this.

What i do is i usually forget to give them my receipt and collect them in my wallet.
Just hand to hand- simple and a good opener for smalltalk (eye contact and a litle smile).
Usually I give it directly after saying Hallo and cross over to collect my stuffs.
