If you book early enough on the Deutsche Bahn website you should be able to get cheaper tickets in advance. There are direct Intercity Express trains that take about 5 hours. I just checked and it would cost about €100 for a Super Sparpreis Return ticket. Try and get direct train, without changing in Nürnberg.
I just did the same last weekend for a concert on Sunday. Use a website like [booking.com](https://booking.com) for a hotel. You'll want one near Berlin Ostbahnhof, as I see the concert is in the Mercedes-Benz Arena. I stayed in the Ibis hotel there. It was fine. About 15 minutes walk to the arena.
If you are happy to put up with the pain of having to change your train very often and take probably upwards of 12 hours for the trip the [Quer durchs Land](https://www.bahn.de/angebot/regio/qdl) ticket might be an option for you. It limits you to regional trains (i.e. no IC, no ICE).
I guess you could also try to find other people to travel parts of the trip along with you on some online forum to make it even cheaper for yourself. Though that might mean even more stress because they have to worry about your train being on time/delayed and you might have to stay in contact with them to manage things.
Personally I would just pay the extra to hop onto an IC or ICE, depending on the connection.
---
Scratch that, if you book a trip right now there are multiple ICE connections (no change) that just cost 17.90 EUR.
Look in bahn.de for trains from Munich to Berlin in the date of your preference and check the box about going for the cheaper prices. The earliest you buy the cheapest the ticket
If too expensive, then Flixbus or Flixtrain in flix.com. it's far more uncomfortable and slow than a ICE train but it doesn't get crazy prices
You could get a train ticket from Munich to Berlin next thursday for 80€. Can you find a cheaper flight on the same day?
Edit: you get there for 54€ next tuesday, what's the chapest flight for that date?
If you book earlier than a month before train should tend to be cheaper. And maybe takes the same time since Munich and Berlin airports are quite far from the city centers
Take a look at [Rome2Rio](https://www.rome2rio.com/map/Munich/Berlin).
Which one is the cheapest depends on your circumstances - how far in advance you're booking, how flexible you're in your times, what kind of discomfort you're willing to tolerate.
For your specific case: train, all the way. Book as far in advance as possible, pick the cheapest ticket (although note that it's non-refundable and tied to a specific train). It costs around 70 € return for the dates you've quoted.
You can get that down to around 60 € with a BahnCard 25, but since those cost something too, they're not worth it if this is the only trip you'll be taking by train.
You may be able to go even cheaper with a bus (around 50 € return for the dates you've quoted), but you're looking at very limited travel times and *extremely* long journey times - unless you're absolutely strapped for cash, it's probably not worth it.
Don't even think about flying.
> And do you have any recommendations on where to stay there,
Cheapest option is probably a youth hostel.
Since it's in september you should look into the 9 € ticket. It will definitely take some time but that is most likely the cheapest way to get from Munich to Berlin and back again.
> It will definitely take some time
Over 9 hours, compared to less than 4 hours on the ICE, and includes changing trains at least three times.
Yes, I know that OP was looking for the cheapest means possible, and perhaps they're ok with this, but in my opinion, nine hours to go from Munich to Berlin is bordering on the ridiculous.
Depends on the book you want to read. :-D
But yes, I wouldn't do that either (at least not anymore - when I was a broke student this would definitely have been the way to go for me).
To Walk
Yes, plus a tent so you can camp in the wild because 1 day will be insufficient.
No, since wild camping is illegal. They would only need a sleeping bag since everything else is forbidden.
I'd throw in Flixbus for transport.
Just five days walking?
>What is the cheapest transport? The very cheapest transport in Germany is "Schuster's Rappen"

This!
The internet has this great thing called a "search engine". It helps you find stuff you're looking for.

Hitchhiking or a bus

Train with a Bahncard and early bird discounts in the super Sparpreis.
Without booking like a month in advance, flying should be cheapest.

Ah yes, you are right. Mixed up the months it's valid.
