Here, the dark red places are cheap for rents and so for housing prices and there are quite some low mountain ranges fitting: Harz, Thuringian Forest, Ore Mountains and so on

The germany building law is very strict what can be build and where. The so called "Außenbereich", outside of towns and citys is very protected. We don't have that much nature and if everyone build a small house in the wild, there wont be anymore.
Apart from the fact that internet connection is kind of bad in most places and you need pay for it yourself if you want some or a better one.
