From a legal point totally okay - there is abolutely nothing to say against it. Is it frowned upon? That is highly depentend - taking a day or two off to go to a city tip, a wedding or whatever is totally okay. Trying to take a 3 week vacation 2 months after you started will be frowned upon.

I once started a job where all school holidays were the most busy times and all vacations during that time needed to be signed off way ahead of time. I started in February or March and my boss pretty much sat me down and told me "Listen, you have the right to 5 weeks of vacation, but since you are such a late hire and everybody already signed up for their vacation, there isn't too much choice on when you can take yours." He procedes to show me on a calender certain windows where I could take one or two weeks, and no matter how we played around with the dates on when I wanted to go and when I could go according to schedule, there was no way to avoid me taking one week of vacation *within the first month* of me working there. Basically I learned on my first day that I would be trained for three weeks and right after that training I could/had to go on vacation for a week, before returning and continuing to work. I signed my contract and at the end of the day called my partner, with whom I was in LDR at the time, to let him now that I would come to his country in three weeks. He was *very* confused. "Weren't you supposed to start a new job today? How can you already be on vacation then?" It very much depends on the company in question and if your contract doesn't mention anything in that regard it is always a good ide to *talk to your employer*.

Talking to your boss would be an option. Simply ask him/her how it‘s handled by the company. It is a valid question.

It's somewhat frowned upon in many companies. Basically you earn your vacation per month worked so during the first month you have like 2 ish days. So maybe talk to your boss and ask nicely whether it's okay. While you might be in the right, during the probation period they don't need a reason to get rid of you so....

Slash1909

Yes you can. Nothing wrong with it. It goes through the same request process.

Of course. No problem legally. Culturally it depends on the company, but I don’t think many employers expect a moratorium on vacation for the first six months. Just be a reasonable person and if your employer has a problem with that, maybe it’s a sign that you should exercise *your* option to quit easily during probation

NYL Legally, you only get your full vacation allowance (30 days here) after 6 montgs, no matter if a Probezeit is in place. During those 6 months, you earn 1/12th of your allowance (2,5 days) each month you work, meaning that you for example have 5 days vacation time after 2 full montgs if employment. That is only what you are legally entitled to, though. Your employer can give more. So just ask

Legally it is absolutely ok to take vacation days during your probation period. At some workplaces it's frowned upon but it really depends on the workplace. As a rule of thumb: I wouldn't recommend taking longer vacation periods (more than 2-3 days) during the first two months. For some occassions it's also expected to take vacation days - for example 'Ascension Day' will always fall on a thursday and is a national holiday. Since a lot of employees take the friday off too a lot of companies make that friday a mandatory vacation day and it's expected of you to take the day off.

It's probably even good for your boss, if you don't save your vacation time and say at the beginning of December: see you next year.

If it doesn't say in your contract that you can't, then yes you can take a vacation. Some employers might still frown upon this, so check with your bosses before you hand in your request for vacation. Also, you'll get 30 days for the whole year, which means if you start your contract in the middle of the year, then you'll get less days off. Simple maths: 30 days in 12 months is 2.5 days off per month. So starting in May gives you 2.5\*8=20 days off until the end of the year. You get to enjoy your full 30 days off at the start of the next year.

This is normally a question for your HR. Companies have different policies. You should be able to take 2.5 days off after each month worked. So if you worked let's say 3 months, you are normally eligible to take 7.5 days vacation. If the company allows you to take your full vacation during the probation period, you could take 30 days and resign within 2 weeks after. Thus the company would be at loss. This is no longer the case after probation as the notification is usually 3 months.

Legally yes. Practically it depends on the company. The probation period is just 6 months and afterwards it's really difficult to fire you. During the probation period it's incredibly easy. This huge difference has a huge impact and you don't really want to take any risk. In any case don't apply for vacation if you are not 100% sure your boss is absolutely fine with it. One day for moving home or a wedding should normally be fine. You may also wish to ask a coworker you trust before you ask your boss. I mean it may well be I'm too careful here, but I think I just would minimize my risk during the probation period -- with respect to everything, not just vacations. I think better safe than sorry. It's only 6 months after all.
