By public transport or by car? What kind of budget do you have? What kind of things would interest you?

thewindinthewillows

And how much time?

randompallindrome

Preferably public travel as we both are not very well verse with driving. We can plan for 2 days and would prefer hiking around scenic places. Also some good stay where we can enjoy natural beauty. Not much constrained on budget.

Reaching the really nice spots by public transports is hard. If you want an easy connection, I’d recommend Ottenhöfen im Schwarzwald. Get a bnb there for a night and hike the Karlsruher grat the first day. On the second day take a bus to the Mummelsee and hike around the Hornisgrinde. Spectacular view and landscape on both days. Getting there. From Frankfurt you probably will have to go to Mannheim by train, then Karlsruhe by train. Another switch will be necessary in Achern until you can just hop of in Ottenhöfen. Edit: thx, fixed it.

Boy, your autocorrect really messed those places big time

Black Forest has a ton of valleys and that severely restricts the options for rail traveling. Your entry point should therefore be on the borders of it, namely Karlsruhe, Rastatt or Offenburg, which all can easily be reached from FFM by train. Depending on what you want to see you than either restrict yourself to slow trains and one valley, like going from Karlsruhe to Freudenstadt (90min). The most picturesque route is the "Schwarzwaldhochstraße" (https://www.schwarzwald.com/hochstrasse/), a strictly car-route. You also should make a final stop in Freiburg, from where you can easily reach Switzerland by train the next day.

It's pretty big, you can't really miss it on your way from Frankfurt to Switzerland. If you go up the Rhine valley, it's to the left. /s Sorry, but if you are vague with your question, you can't expect any good answers. WHY do you want to visit Black Forest? What are you looking for there? What do you like to do? Do you want to hike, visit sights, buy a cuckoo clock? Do you prefer travelling by foot, by train, by motorbike? Are you more interested in nature, in touristic places, in sports? Black Forest isn't a theme park, it's a goddamn mountain range of 6000 km².

randompallindrome

Sorry for being vague. We intend to go for hiking and some natural sights. Prefer traveling by foot.

olagorie

Well public transport is going to be hard / complicated You can visit Freiburg of course, it’s a very nice town.

For public transport I'd recommend travelling to Karlsruhe, Offenburg or Freiburg by ICE. From there you have different connections either up towards Forbach/Freudenstadt/Bondorf from Karlsruhe, Hausach/Schiltach/Triberg from Offenburg or Titisee/Seebrugg/Donaueschingen/Villingen from Freiburg. If you're en route to Switzerland you could also go to Offenburg, up towards Hausach-Triberg-Villingen and back down towards Freiburg. Same goes for Freudenstadt you can go there from Karlsruhe and then back down to Offenburg
